Quick Review
New England actually looked to have opened the scoring in the opening minutes of the match, with Jay Heaps tuning the ball over the line at the back post after Jiri Jarosik had conceded a free-kick some 27 yards out. The New England mascots, a line of riflemen dressed in period costumes, fired off a barrage in celebration, but had done so prematurely with the linesman raising his flag for offside.
In the opening stages the match served little by way of entertainment for the crowd of 16,312, which comprised of a large number of Celtic's dedicated and passionate Stateside support.
A 38th minute effort from Kenny Miller, which carried little pace or power, was the best that Celtic could muster in the opening stages.
They certainly looked brighter after the interval, but again it was New England and midfielder, Jeff Larentowicz who fired off the first real attempt on goal, breaking into the box and forcing an excellent save from Marshall.
Aiden McGeady then followed this up on the hour mark with a dipping shot from 25 yards that forced New England’s substitute keeper Doug Warren to bat the ball away with both fists.
Celtic’s problems up front looked to have deepened in the 67th minute as Beattie limped off injured, being replaced by 19 year-old reserve team striker, Rocco Quinn. Few expected that Quinn would turn out to be Celtic’s goalscorer, grabbing the only goal of the game and the American tour in the 80th minute. The goal was actually inspired by Celtic’s most decisive move of the match, with Evander Sno pushing a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Derek Riordan, who had cut into the box from the left. The 23 year-old’s first time shot was initially saved and then spilled by Warren, rolling through to Quinn on the edge of the six yard box who tucked the ball beneath the scrambling keeper.
Then, as the 90th minute approached, Latham popped up on the left hand side of the area to control the ball beautifully on his chest and power it, on the volley, beyond the helpless Marshall.
Trivia
Celtic were just seconds from victory in the final match of their preseason mini-tour of America.
