Evander Sno cannot believe his penalty miss
Evander Sno's penalty miss sent the holders out the cup
Falkirk knocked holders Celtic out of the CIS Insurance Cup after a penalty shoot-out miss from Evander Sno.

Maciej Zurawski headed Celtic into the lead from a Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink cross eight minutes into extra time.

But Falkirk replied within a minute, Anthony Stokes firing home after Alan Gow's effort was deflected.

Both sides scored four penalties and missed two before Jack Ross made no mistake to put pressure on Sno, who shot wide of the post.

Celtic manager Gordon Strachan had made six changes to the side that beat Hearts in the league on Saturday.

Derek Riordan, Bobo Balde, Thomas Gravesen, Shaun Maloney, Stephen Pearson and Vennegoor of Hesselink were the players to come into the starting line-up.

Falkirk were unchanged after their 3-0 win away to Dunfermline and dominated the early possession.

But it was Celtic who were the more incisive and a Maloney drive from 12 yards was blocked on the line by defender Darren Barr.

Falkirk goalkeeper Jeroen Lambers twice denied long-range efforts from Riordan.

And, when the former Hibernian forward did beat Lambers with a 25-yard free-kick, the ball flew past the post.

Stephen O'Donnell prevented a header from Vennegoor of Hesselink sneaking in at the post as the visitors held out until the break.

Falkirk came close to breaking the deadlock when Gow rounded goalkeeper Artur Boruc, but Gary Caldwell cleared the forward's effort off the goal-line.

And Gow's drive was parried by Boruc to O'Donnell, who sent his diving header wide of the post.

Lambers had to parry clear from a close-range Maloney header before Falkirk had a goal ruled out for offside.

A Stokes drive struck the post, bounced off Boruc's back and O'Donnell was ruled offside after slotting home the rebound.

Lambers produced another fine save to push clear a Pearson shot on the turn and the midfielder also volleyed over from close range as Celtic were denied a winner before 90 minutes were up.

Zurawski put Celtic ahead from six yards eight minutes into extra time, but the in-form Stokes replied almost instantly.

A Vennegoor of Hesselink header struck the Falkirk post, while a Stokes drive forced a fine save from Boruc as both sides pushed for a winner.

Boruc produced a fine save in the dying seconds following a Stokes header, but the match went to penalties.

Both sides had scored three apiece before efforts from Stokes, Caldwell, Gow and Kenny Miller were saved.

Vitor Lima, Zurawski and Jack Ross made no mistake before Sno's miss sent Falkirk into the semi-finals.

Strachan praises winning Bairns
BBC
Celtic manager Gordon Strachan was magnanimous in defeat after Falkirk knocked out the CIS Insurance Cup holders after a penalty shoot-out.

"First of all, well done to Falkirk," he said. "They went at it and made some chances and so did we.

"It went to penalties and they did better than us, it was as simple as that, so well done to them.

"We are suffering, which you have to after a defeat. It's our first hiccup for a while."

Celtic manager rues lack of luck

Most observers suggested that Hearts had been unlucky to lose to the Scottish Premier League leaders at Celtic Park on Saturday.

"Maybe we used up our luck on Saturday against Hearts, but that's life," said Strachan.

"Eventually you get what you deserve, but you will have a few blips on the way and hopefully that's one of them."
