Review

Celtic warmed up for Wednesday's tie with AC Milan with a narrow win over bottom of the table Dunfermline. An entertaining game marred by some funny refereeing, and Miller's inability to slot away more of the chances that passed him by. JVoH saved us, but a notable goal by the visitors with Hammill scoring a scorcher from outside the box which dipped behind Boruc.

Celtic 2-1 Dunfermline Athletic

BBC
Celtic warmed up for Wednesday's tie with AC Milan with a narrow win over bottom of the table Dunfermline.

Kenny Miller shot the runaway SPL leaders ahead early in the game when he slotted home from a few yards out.

Miller then fluffed two excellent chances from inside the six yard box before substitute Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink flicked in a clever header.

Adam Hammill fired in a late scorcher for the visitors and Dunfermline caused a few problems in the closing minutes.

The margin of victory does not reflect the pattern of a game that Celtic dominated throughout.

Gordon Strachan's side started brightly and were rewarded when they opened the scoring after four minutes.

Paul Telfer released Aiden McGeady down the left flank and he raced past makeshift right-back Darren Young before whipping the ball into the path of Miller and the Scotland striker stroked it home from close range.

Miller should have added to his tally soon after when he was released by Evander Sno, only for his scuffed shot to be smothered by goalkeeper Dorus De Vries.

De Vries then made a great save to tip a strong Craig Beattie header just over the crossbar.

Shunsuke Nakamura curled a 12 yard shot wide of the target after exchanging neat passes with Miller, who later failed to convert a Thomas Gravesen pass from just a few yards out.

Dunfermline's only glimpse of goal in the opening half came when Stephen Glass dispossessed Sno, only to shoot over the crossbar from the edge of the penalty area.

After the break, sublime play from Nakamura saw him twist his way past two opponents before setting up Miller, who somehow struck the crossbar when a goal looked certain.

Vennegoor of Hesselink, who was deemed a fitness doubt for the trip to Milan, came on to replace Beattie after 62 minutes.

And the Dutch striker immediately linked with Lee Naylor, only for the defender to shoot straight at De Vries.

The Pars goalkeeper then made an impressive fingertip save to keep out an angled rocket shot from McGeady.

But, from the resulting corner, Celtic stretched their lead thanks to the quick thinking of Vennegoor of Hesselink.

The ball was played out to the unmarked Gravesen and the Dane's mis-hit volley bounced into the ground before looping up to his team-mate, who flicked it into the back of the net with his head.

On 87 minutes, Dunfermline scored a wonderful goal out of the blue when Hammill stepped forward and found the top corner of the net with a shot from 22 yards.

The visitors pushed on in the remaining minutes but the Celtic goal was not threatened again.
