Trivia

  • First game back to Hibs for Scott Brown (the club we bought him from).
  • Celtic have now gone one year in which we have conceded at least one goal in every away game! (only exception is possibly AC Milan away in Champs Lge but we still conceded in Extra Time).
  • the Green Brigade (Celtic supporters) unveiled a funny banner that said “Hibs: Celtc’s feeder club since 1888!” One problem, read the phrase again and you’ll notice that they missed out the “i” in Celtic..

Review

The less said the better for Celtic, a poor result for us after a poor game in midweek v Shaktar Donestsk. Boruc in particular had a howler, giving two gifted goals to Hibs!

Hibernian 3-2 Celtic

Dean Shiels celebrates his late goal as Artur Boruc is left to ponder his mistakes
Dean Shiels’ late goal floored Celtic and Artur Boruc
Two howlers from goalkeeper Artur Boruc handed Hibernian victory over SPL leaders Celtic after a five-goal thriller at Easter Road.

Boruc allowed a Steven Fletcher drive to squirm over his body after five minutes, but Aiden McGeady drove home the equaliser 21 minutes later.

Thierry Gathuessi fired Hibs back into the lead, only for Gary Caldwell to head an equaliser after the break.

But Dean Shiels pounced after Boruc dropped a Merouane Zemmama drive.

It leaves Hibs as the only unbeaten side in the Scottish Premier League.

And it meant Celtic had suffered a rare two defeats in a row following their midweek reverse against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.

Mark Wilson and Shunsuke Nakamura were ruled out after picking up injuries in Ukraine and were replaced with Jean-Joel Perrier-Doumbe and McGeady.

Hibs were without the suspended Clayton Donaldson, while Filipe Morais dropped to the bench, with Fletcher and Kevin McCann being granted starting berths.

Manager John Collins sprung a surprise by adopting a 3-5-2 formation that had backfired on a couple of previous occasions.

And goalkeeper Yves Ma-Kalambay was forced to make a couple of blocks from Scott McDonald efforts after the Australian exploited the extra space just outside the six-yard box.

But Hibs stunned the visitors when Fletcher’s slightly deflected drive from 25 yards somehow managed to deceive Boruc.

That settled the home side, but they suffered a blow after 19 minutes, when Fletcher was stretchered off in some distress after picking up a leg knock following a 50-50 challenge with Stephen McManus.

And the Edinburgh side were pegged back seven minutes later after a swift interchange of passes between McDonald and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink inside the Hibs box set up McGeady to drive the ball into the corner of the net from 16 yards.

Collins had seen enough and pulled off young Lewis Stevenson after 29 minutes and his replacement, Morais, made an immediate impression with some clever jinking runs from central midfield.

The former St Johnstone and Millwall player was involved in Hibs’ second goal four minutes before the break.

Gathuessi pounced on a poor headed clearance by Caldwell to blast the ball into the far corner from 15 yards.

Hibs were first to threaten after the break and Caldwell cleared from in front of his own goal after Morais had beaten Boruc to a through ball and lobbed the goalkeeper from an acute angle.

Mickael Antoine-Curier and substitute Shiels both fired efforts wide, but Celtic started to take control.

Only two desperate late lunges from Rob Jones denied Paul Hartley and Scott Brown being put clear close to goal.

And Ma-Kalambay did well to turn a powerful McGeady effort over the crossbar.

But, from the resulting corner, Caldwell headed powerfully home from eight yards.

Just when it looked like Celtic would save their unbeaten league record, Boruc dropped Zemmama’s drive and Shiels forced the ball home.

Booked: Gathuessi, Antoine-Curier.

Hibs profit from Boruc blunders to leave Celtic confounded

Ewan Murray at Easter Road
The Guardian, Monday 24 September 2007

Two uncharacteristic blunders by Celtic’s goalkeeper, Artur Boruc, handed Hibernian a surprise victory here yesterday to round off a dismal week for the champions after their European capitulation in Donetsk. Rangers replaced their city rivals at the top of the Scottish Premier League with victory over Aberdeen.

Goalkeeping aberrations have been common at Easter Road in recent times. The difference here was that the errors came from the visiting custodian – Hibs had Boruc to thank for the three points.

Gordon Strachan, the Celtic manager, used the words “fantastic” and “excellent” to describe his team’s performance, which highlights just how damaging Boruc’s contribution was. The Polish international allowed a harmless long-range effort from Steven Fletcher to bounce over him and into the net to edge Hibs in front after five minutes and dropped a Merouane Zemmama shot at the feet of Dean Shiels three minutes from time, Shiels promptly slotting home as the hosts inflicted a first domestic defeat of the season on Celtic.

“That is without doubt the best we have played in Edinburgh since I arrived at the club,” said Strachan. “To get one point would have been an injustice. Not to get any is quite ridiculous.” That appraisal was only slightly harsh on Hibs, who might easily have capitulated when Celtic twice levelled, even though they had the game’s best performer in Brian Kerr.

This victory hoists John Collins’ team to third in the Premier League, only a point behind Celtic. “Artur is a world-class goalkeeper,” said Collins, “but he is human as well. You have got to get shots on target for any goalkeeper to make errors.”

Over the weekend Arsenal were again being linked with a move for the 27-year-old Boruc, but even the best in this particular business can be error-prone. Fletcher’s shot, from 25 yards and arriving at Boruc via a deflection from Gary Caldwell, should have been saved comfortably but the keeper went to ground too early and could only watch as the ball bounced beyond him.

Celtic dominated the remainder of the opening half, Aiden McGeady equalising when he emphatically rounded off a fine move that also included Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Scott McDonald.

That Hibs went in at half-time in front was down to further shabby defending, this time by Caldwell and Stephen McManus, who failed to clear their lines, enabling Thierry Gatheussi to slam in his first goal in Scottish football.

Caldwell, roundly abused on his return to his former home ground, was afforded a free header from Scott Brown’s corner after 67 minutes to again restore parity and at that point it seemed that Celtic were destined to confirm their dominance with victory. Boruc, however, scuppered such hopes, spilling Zemmama’s drive to leave Strachan reeling from two defeats in six days after last Tuesday’s Champions League defeat.

A dejected Boruc threw his gloves to the ground at full-time and made his way immediately up the tunnel. What followed may have repercussions for Hibs – a spectator ran on to the field and stamped on the gloves before being allowed to leave the pitch unchallenged. Objects, which appeared to be pieces of food, were also thrown from a home supporters’ area towards Caldwell as he celebrated his goal.

Hoops, we can’t spell!

DOZY Celtic fans turned up at a match with a giant green-and-white banner – that spelled their team’s name wrong.

Bungling supporters unfurled a flag at Sunday’s SPL match with Hibs that goaded the Easter Road club for being Celtic’s “feeder” club. Hibs have seen a string of their top stars move to Celtic.
But diehards who made the banner missed out the “I” in Celtic, leaving the flag proclaiming ‘Hibs, CELTC’S feeder club since 1888’, after the Edinburgh club nearly folded when newly-formed Celtic took their entire playing squad.
