Review
After a string of poor results of late, Mowbray warned the players that the players had now two months to prove their worth of the jersey to them. In fairness, this wasn’t the best game for him to have posted his remark after.
Hamburg are second in the Bundesliga and are riding high. We’re not…. Yet still we gave a very good game and controlled large chunlks of it. Truthfully we were very unfortunate not to score and to have picked up a point at least which would have been a fairer result on the night’s performance.
Shooting was poor from our perenially off form strikers whilst our midfield isn’t imposing themselves as they should. The only goal of the game was a well worked out set of one twos that gave their scorer a one on one with the goalie to slot in. It hurt after we’d done so well, but that’s the breaks.
At the end we lost and likely sealed our exit from the UEFA cup tournament. The domestic league must now be our one and only priority.

CELTIC IN ICE-BERG DISASTER

Celtic 0-1 Hamburg
By Clive Lindsay
Marcus Berg’s second-half strike edged Hamburg to a deserved Europa League victory over a Celtic side left rooted to the foot of Group C.
Celtic’s Scott Brown and Shaun Maloney squandered the best chances of an even first-half against the Germans.
An Eljero Elia drive struck Celtic’s crossbar after the break before Hamburg grabbed the winner after 62 minutes.
Berg fired low into the far corner after a Ze Roberto pass to leave Celtic with an uphill task to qualify.
It left Celtic without a win in their four home European games this season and three points adrift of third-placed Rapid Vienna, who were hammered 5-1 away to Hapoel Tel-Aviv, with Hamburg now on top.
Celtic have now won just two of eight home games in all competitions under Tony Mowbray, Hamburg joining Arsenal and Dinamo Moscow in further undermining a previously formidable home record of just one defeat – to Barcelona – in eight years in Europe.
Mowbray had adopted a conservative approach against Hamburg, dropping striker Georgios Samaras to the bench, with Maloney returning to make a five-man midfield in which Landry N’Guemo replaced wing man Niall McGinn.
With defender Jerome Boateng having failed a late fitness test, the visitors went into the game without nine first-team players through injury but showed immediately that they were full of confidence.
The Bundesliga’s joint leaders threatened first, with Jonathan Pitroipa, handed his chance in the absence of three injured strikers, driving a shot at goalkeeper Artur Boruc.
The 13th minute proved unlucky for both sides as the first clear-cut chances were created and missed.
First, Maloney’s corner was flicked on off the head of Celtic captain Stephen McManus and Brown’s attempt to side-foot the ball home at the back post was sliced past from eight yards.
Hamburg immediately countered and Berg fired wide from just inside the penalty box and the visitors thereafter looked the more threatening in a game that ebbed and flowed from end to end.
Brown, being employed as the forward midfield man in support of lone striker Scott McDonald, found space to fire a low drive at Frank Rost, but it was straight to the goalkeeper.
Pitroipa and Berg squandered half chances for Hamburg, while Dennis Aogo curled a free-kick a few feet over from 25 yards.
However, it was Celtic who ought to have gone in at half-time with a lead when an N’Guemo header fell to Maloney unmarked 10 yards out, but the little forward poked his volley wide on the turn before it was cleared.
From the resulting corner, McDonald fired wide under pressure from close range and Celtic appeared to take heart from that spell of pressure as they returned for the second half.
Celtic were pinging low balls into the Hamburg box, but a low drive from McGeady that rolled into the arms of Rost was all they could muster on target.
Hamburg weathered that storm and Pitroipa weaved his way into the box and set up Eljero Elia 16 yards out, but the Netherlands winger’s drive struck the top of the crossbar.
The visitors broke the deadlock when Berg chested the ball down to Ze Roberto, who returned it quickly to the striker to fire low into the far corner from the edge of the box.
A low drive after a neat shimmy from substitute Paddy McCourt forced Rost into a fine save to prevent the ball nestling into the far corner and giving Celtic a share of the points.

Improve or leave Celtic – Mowbray
Celtic manager Tony Mowbray gave his players two months to show they are good enough to remain in his team after the Europa League defeat by Hamburg.
“It is up to the players to prove they are worthy of staying at this club and playing in front of those fans,” he said after the 1-0 Group C loss.
“I think the Celtic fans will be happy with the endeavour, the effort, the commitment and the desire.
“We probably need to win our last three games, so let’s give it a go.”
Celtic remain bottom of Group C, five points behind Hamburg and Hapoel Tel-Aviv, who hammered third-placed Rapid Vienna 5-1.
Players will get opportunities to remain at the club, but the quality needs to improve and I have to work hard to do that
Celtic manager Tony Mowbray
Mowbray’s side have lost three and drawn one of their home European games this season and also slipped off the top of the Scottish Premier League last weekend.
“We give them 10 out of 10 for effort but I have never questioned their effort,” he said of his players.
“I can question their quality, as I did last Saturday against Motherwell, and as I do again. I saw our quality and I saw their quality.
“Manchester United wins games because Rooney smashes it in and Berbatov creates space, Liverpool are finding it hard without Torres and Gerrard.
“The best players win you football matches, quality is what counts.”
Mowbray’s side were booed off the park after recording no wins in his last four games and only two wins in eight home games since taking over from Gordon Strachan in the summer.
However, he said of the fans: “They will see the miss-controlled passes, as I see them. We will try and put it together bit by bit.
“We will try to find the right players of the right quality to lift the team and we are working hard behind the scenes to find those players.
“The players are honest, hard-working players and they are very harsh on themselves.
“Players will get opportunities to remain at the club, but the quality needs to improve and I have to work hard to do that.”
