Trivia

  • Europa League, UEFA Cup 2009-10
  • Celtic hold-out against Hamburg and really could have won. Hamburg are second in the Bundesliga and beat Celtic at Parkhead 1-0.
  • Celtic remain bottom of the group.

Review

A good performance against the second placed side in the Bundesliga. A good game and there were chances from both sides, and we should have got a goal, but there were none from either side. Zaluska had a cracking game and finally Boruc has competition for his place.

The Hamburg S.V fans seem to have made a pact with the devil with their fans having done a Union Jack card display with "No Surrender". Shrugged off by us with around 300 Celtic fans and 1000 St Paul fans in to help us at the ground. Great wee atmosphere and all had a good time.

Regardless of it all, we were now almost guaranteed out of Europe before Xmas! Maybe next year.

Hamburg 0 Celtic 0: McDonald misfires as Hoops count heavy cost of deadlock

By Stephen Mcgowan Last updated at 12:32 AM on 07th November 2009

Shattered Celtic striker Scott McDonald scorned a pair of gilt-edged chances in Hamburg last night – then admitted the Parkhead side blew it big time.
Tony Mowbray's men had four golden opportunities to fire their way right back into contention in Europa League Group C. After twice being denied by Hamburg keeper Markus Rost in a battling 0-0 draw, however, the Australian international and his teammates were left to rue those wasted openings. Barry Robson and Georgios Samaras also passed up fine opportunities as inspired keeper Lukasz Zaluska kept the Bundesliga giants at bay at the other end.
After seeing Celtic's best chance of a first win on German soil go begging, however, McDonald admitted: 'We are disappointed that we didn't win it.
'Obviously, we had good chances but we didn't take them and that is the difference in Europe. You really have to put them away, but it didn't happen.'
Of his own lost opportunities, the striker added: 'For the first one, the keeper has had a good save, but you always question whether you could have done more.
'It looked as though it was going into the net, but it helped him he was six-foot six. 'With the second one, I tried to be cheeky and slip it through his legs, but he came out early and saved well.
'But I will try to take the positives from it, move on and look for a game at Falkirk on Sunday.'
Celtic's chances of progression have now become pencil slim.
Hapoel Tel-Aviv went top of the group with a thumping 3-0 thrashing of Rapid Vienna last night.
Celtic's only chance of survival is if they win both their games and Hamburg lose both of theirs.
'I know we are still not out of it mathematically, but it is going to be very tough,' McDonald acknowledged.
'Hapoel at Celtic Park will be interesting after their result against Rapid, but we just have to look to beat them and take it from there.
'The last two games have been encouraging and things seem to be coming together. We are passing it better, creating chances and that is good.
'There is plenty to build on and more goals would be helpful for everyone. We would like a few more, but it's not for the want of trying.
'We've had chances in Europe and we've been unfortunate, but we'll look forward to the two games we have left.'
That Celtic managed to secure a point away from home in Europe was a consolation of sorts and, allied to a clean sheet, last night was closer to the standard Tony Mowbray expects of his side on a consistent basis in the coming months.
'It's a strange feeling because of what we wanted and needed from the game,' said McDonald.
'Had we scored early, who knows what might have happened.
'I thought we were comfortable in the game. I know Lukasz has made a couple of saves, but Hamburg didn't really cut us open.
'The first half was end-to-end and we held them off in the first 20 minutes of the second-half.
'It was 50-50 again after that and we both tried to win the game.'

Georgios Samaras’s form provides bright spot for Celtic amid European gloom Graham Spiers

Tony Mowbray could at least take one positive aspect from Thursday night’s 0-0 draw with Hamburg in the Europa League. Celtic’s chances of promotion out of group C to the knockout rounds are getting slimmer by the day but, in Georgios Samaras, Mowbray at least had a striker that was starting to resemble the international player that he is.
Samaras had a busy night in Germany, both putting himself about and laying off a number of good passes, one of them being perfectly weighted for Scott McDonald, who duly failed to beat Frank Rost from 14 yards.
Yesterday, the Greece striker admitted that he had enjoyed the experience in Hamburg and had started to feel as at home at Celtic as he had done in his two years so far at the club.
“First of all, I feel within myself and my body to be a part of the team,” Samaras said. “I think I played a good game but I have more to give to my club and my team-mates and my manager. I am never happy with my performance so every time I go back home I try to see the game again, to see the good points and bad points and try to fix my mistakes.
“For the start of the pre-season I was feeling well. I put the injury from last season out of my head and I worked really hard in the summer just to put strength in my legs. I have been feeling well and now I am getting the chance to prove to everyone that I am good enough to play for Celtic, and, of course, at the moment I am feeling well.”
Many had believed that Samaras was destined just to be a bit-part player at Celtic, but he happily dismissed the notion yesterday.
“I have been happy at the club,” he said. “I have never felt that I was out of the game or out of the team, that people doubted me as a Celtic player. I have never felt that from my team-mates, my manager, the club or the supporters. I am really happy in Glasgow, really happy with the team and happy that I have signed for this club. This is my third season and I am really excited about that.
“I just focus on my football and nothing else. When training or games are finished I go home and I don’t listen to anyone, just my girlfriend and team-mates. I have always done that.”
Samaras seems certain to start again for Celtic tomorrow afternoon against Falkirk, and warned that, coming off the high of a European night is often the moment when the team can be at their most vulnerable.
“Those are the most difficult games because you play European games against a top team in the Bundesliga and then play against the bottom team in the SPL,” Samaras said. “So we must prepare our minds to be ready for that game because it will not be easy.
“We had a good game against them in the Co-operative Insurance Cup, when we won 4-0, but this will be totally different and, as I say, we must prepare ourselves mentally and physically because it will not be easy.”
Meanwhile, Landry N’Guemo added to Celtic’s regrets about not being able to take better advantage of the series of chances Mowbray’s men created against Hamburg two nights ago.
“We had a lot of opportunities and we didn’t score so we are really disappointed,” the Cameroon midfield player said. “We needed three points but we got just one so we will see what happens in the other games.
“It is frustrating but all the team has to work hard on the training ground in order to score those opportunities. Our aim is to win the championship and when you are a big team, you have a lot of games and a lot of competition.”
