Trivia

  • Dougie-Dougie-gate!

  • Celtic drop to second on goal difference; Sevco won 4-1 day before.
  • Celtic v Rangers next week, both are on maximum pts to day of the game.
  • Wilson returns to starting line-up (ChaDuRi dropped) and to the surprise of all is man of the match for many people!
  • Game marred by bad refereeing where the referee missed one penalty decision, gives a penalty for something two seconds later then rescinds that decision (wrongly) after consulting with his linesman! Terrible.
  • Since dubbed Dougie-gate! Full details: link
  • Incident blew up into a maelstorm, and lies & incrimination from Scottish referees who tried to hide their incompetence. A strong hand by Celtic and strong push by all led to their downfall.
  • Dundee Utd manager unhappy: “Celtic backroom staff celebrated as if they had won the league. I’m going to start running 30 yards down the track when we score a goal. Celtic seem to get away with it. But any time I go out my dugout I get the fourth official pulling me back but watch me running down the track the next time we score – I will probably get sent to the stand.” [Pathetic]

Review2010-10-17: Dundee Utd 1-2 Celtic, SPL - Pic

Game marred by bad refereeing where the referee missed one penalty decision, gives a penalty for something two seconds later then rescinds that decision (wrongly) after consulting with his linesman! Terrible.

Great performance today. We fully deserved our late late victory.

Forster-calm,composed, made a great save from severin when he had to.

Wilson-fantastic performance. Should guarantee his place in the team for next week. I’ll certainly feel more comfortable if he plays at RB.( the naysayers before the game and that jauntis that’s still moaning about him)

Loovens-Excellent today. Defended corners very well and put in one very good challenge in the box(on robertson i think). Good to see him being a bit more vocal as well. He has looked very good recently but he has a long way to go to convince most people myself included.

Mastorovic-solid as always. Has sured up our defence no end and is the reason why loovens now looks like a centre half.

Izzy- Got caught out going forward a couple of times in the first half but he looks very comfortable on the ball, has good vision and defended well.

Ki- Played very well. Held the middle, coped with the physical side of game and his distribution was exceptional.

Ledley-Great game from him today. Think he needs to get more used to the fact that a foul in the championship isn’t always going to be a foul here(eg. when he was pulled down before their goal) .

Stokes-some lovely passing and ball control from stokesey. Looks well suited to his new role with us.

Maloney-looks sharp. Been our most consistent payer this season. A nightmare for any defender.

Sammi-good and bad as usual. Fairly typical sammi performance.

Hooper-we have ourselves a striker. Was unlucky not to get a hat-trick.

Paddy-delighted to see him put the captains armband on. He did put the initial ball in for the goal.

We could do with bring in subs a little earlier. Everyone was playing so well it was difficult to know who to take off.

Hopefully we can apply some pressure on the sfa and get rid of dougie once and for all after that appalling performance. I won’t be holding my breath. We’d need to bypass dallas for that and go straight to the top.

Gary Hooper seals last-minute win for Celtic over Dundee United

Dundee United 1 Celtic 2

  • guardian.co.uk, Sunday 17 October 2010 18.51 BST

Celtic’s Gary Hooper tries to get past Dundee United’s keeper, Dusan Pernis, in the Scottish Premier League match at Tannadice Park. Photograph: Lynne Cameron/PA A few more games like this would work wonders for Scottish football’s ailing reputation. A last-minute winner, the earlier reversal of a decision to award Celtic a penalty, eight bookings and seven minutes of stoppage time tell only part of the story of this rousing affair on Tayside. Even if Celtic win next weekend’s Old Firm encounter, the post-match scenes are unlikely to prove as jubilant as they were here.

The afternoon threatened to be overshadowed by controversy. Dougie McDonald awarded Celtic a 70th-minute penalty after the Dundee United goalkeeper Dusan Pernis clashed with Gary Hooper. That decision was overturned by the referee after consultation with his assistant, Steven Craven, much to Celtic’s indignation. Neil Lennon, the Celtic manager, received a stern talking to from McDonald while a lighter was thrown from an area housing visiting supporters as a mêlée raged on and off the pitch.

“I’m very proud of the team,” Lennon said later. “Despite a controversial decision, a very controversial decision, going against us, we never let our heads drop.” On the overturned penalty Lennon said: “He [McDonald] has given the penalty. To me he can’t change his mind. From where I was, he had a really good look at it. His explanation was that the linesman had a better view of it. I find that unacceptable. He looked pretty adamant to me that he was giving the penalty.”

Lennon obviously is not an advocate of team work between officials. Craven’s intervention seemed justified, even if the referee’s failure to award a spot-kick as Garry Kenneth held Hooper was more questionable. That occurred a moment before the game’s major talking point, meaning McDonald could have contrived to get two penalty decisions wrong in the space of three seconds.

Hooper’s second goal of the afternoon, a minute from the end of normal time, meant not all of the post-match talk surrounded matters relating to the rules. Not all, but the majority, with even United’s manager Peter Houston airing public grievances.

“I thought Dougie McDonald was very inconsistent,” Houston said. “He is quite quick to give penalties against us. [The Celtic midfielder] Ki [Sung-Yueng] should have been booked for diving, for trying to win another penalty kick.”

In the end Celtic deserved to claim and got their three points. Hooper had – who looks quite a catch at just £1.6m from Scunthorpe United – clipped home an early opener from a fine Mark Wilson cross. Georgios Samaras should have settled matters, but failed to convert a glorious chance after rounding Pernis.

United’s equaliser had an element of fortune, David Goodwillie’s shot taking a significant deflection off Glenn Loovens on its way beyond Fraser Forster. Hooper chipped narrowly over and Joe Ledley cracked a post as Celtic chased a winner. It arrived in scrappy circumstances, Hooper scoring from close-range after a Georgios Samaras header landed in his path.

“Celtic celebrated as if they had won the league,” said Houston. “The next time we score a goal, I’m going to go charging 30 yards down the track like the entire Celtic backroom staff did.”

That highlighted their relief. Celtic will host Rangers next week with each team boasting 100% SPL records. Glasgow derbies rarely need extra edge but, on this occasion, the stage really has been set.

Man of the match Gary Hooper (Celtic)

Dundee United 1-2 Celtic

By Keir Murray

Gary Hooper poked home a 90th-minute winner as Celtic maintained their 100% Scottish Premier League record.

In a tempestuous match, Hooper swept home a Mark Wilson cross in 13 minutes to put Neil Lennon’s side ahead.

United stemmed the Celtic attacks and equalised when David Goodwillie’s shot deflected in off Glenn Loovens.

Referee Dougie McDonald pointed to the spot when Dusan Pernis upended Hooper, then overturned his decision, but 20 minutes later the striker won the game.

The last-gasp victory keeps Celtic level-pegging with Rangers at the top of the table, with the first Old Firm derby of the season to come next weekend.

The visitors will go into that key match buoyed by triumph in this thriller but Lennon will be concerned that his side did not kill United off in a first half they completed dominated.
Georgios Samaras was the spearhead of Celtic’s attack, with willing support from Hooper, Anthony Stokes and Shaun Maloney.

And the first chance fell to the Greek, who seized on a slip to race straight at Pernis’s goal. However, his right boot sliced across the ball and the effort spun harmlessly wide.

The opening goal, in 13 minutes, was swift in its execution, as Stokes spun on the touchline, fed Mark Wilson down the right and the full-back whipped in a cross for Hooper to convert from the six-yard line.

Three minutes later, Samaras was too fast for Garry Kenneth and Paul Dixon and found himself facing Pernis. The Slovak pushed the rampaging striker wide enough to make an effort on goal sufficiently tricky and Kenneth was able to get back in time to hoof the ball off the line.

The first 20 minutes of the match had passed before United were able to break through the green and white torrent that threatened to sweep them away.

United’s unlikely attacker was centre-half Scott Severin. Twice in quick succession he connected with loose balls from corners and on each occasion his efforts were blocked by Samaras, while a powerful Prince Buaben strike ricocheted wide of Fraser Forster’s post.

As the Celtic attacks resumed, an awkward first-time shot from Stokes was saved by Pernis before Maloney pinged a free-kick over the crossbar.

A David Robertson header at the back post from a Craig Conway cross went close before United drew level.

Joe Ledley was on the turf claiming for a foul, when Goodwillie picked up the ball, made a bee-line for goal and tried his luck from 18 yards, his shot deflecting off Loovens past the stranded Forster.

As McDonald checked his watch for half-time, Ledley skelped a rising left-foot shot that Pernis had to stretch fully to tip over.

The Terrors came out for the second half in determined mood and Buaben came very close with a fizzing shot from 20 yards that Forster punched away.

Kenneth somehow managed to prevent Samaras tapping home a low Wilson cross and Maloney curled a free-kick round the United wall but wide of goal.

And the Scotland international brought out a smart save from the Slovak goalie when he cut in from the left to fire in a shot from 12 yards.

The first 70 minutes of the match had not been short on action, but the drama hit new heights when Pernis appeared to sweep the legs of Hooper and McDonald pointed to the spot.

But a conversation with the far-side assistant referee resulted in McDonald overturning his decision and a drop-ball was awarded instead. Presumably, the assistant believed Pernis had got the ball before his momentum took him into Hooper.

As Celtic manager Neil Lennon ranted at the fourth official, the match raged on, Samaras spinning one way and the other to create chances, Severin and Kenneth throwing themselves in the way of crosses and shots amidst the mayhem.

With 12 minutes remaining, Stokes whacked a shot that Pernis parried as far as Ledley and the Welshman crunched a shot off the woodwork.

United boss Peter Houston urged his players forward, with Danny Cadamarteri, on for the returning Craig Conway, offering fresh legs up front.

But it was Hooper who was the match-winner as Celtic’s incessant pressure finally paid off. A lofted ball into the United box was headed down by Samaras and the English striker was the most alert, nicking in to stab the ball over the line to send the Celtic fans wild.

There was still time for Pernis to deny Hooper a hat-trick with a wonderful save – the busy keeper throwing out a hand to push away a fierce strike.
