Review

Hard to believe but we have just beaten a team nine nil let alone Aberdeen. Granted they have been no great shakes in recent seasons but this was a surprise. Two sendings off cleared space on the pitch for both teams and Celtic took advantage. A hat trick each for Stokes and Hooper was the icing on the cake with a penalty for Paddy McCourt being the cherry. With Larsson and Sutton at the match, there was no better fitting performance. Only sour note was loss of Rogne from his red card. Hopefully more of the same in the future from the team (minus a red card to one of our players).

SPL – Rampant Celtic complete record victory

Sat, 06 Nov 16:56:00 2010 (Yahoo)

Celtic returned to the top of the Scottish Premier League with an astonishing 9-0 thumping of Aberdeen – the biggest winning margin in the history of the SPL.

Aberdeen midfielder Paul Hartley and Thomas Rogne of Celtic were sent off in the first half before the home side rode roughshod over the visitors by adding five goals to their 4-0 half-time lead.
Gary Hooper and Anthony Stokes helped themselves to trebles with Joe Ledley, Pat McCourt and an own goal by substitute Josh Magennis completing a horrific defeat for Mark McGhee's team.
Celtic go top of the SPL by two points, but Rangers will return to the summit by a point if they win at St Mirren on Sunday.
Celtic's victory eclipsed their 8-1 win at Dunfermline in 2006 – a match in which Lennon scored during his days as a Celtic player – as the heaviest win in the history of the SPL.
This rout was also their biggest win over Aberdeen. Their previous best over the Dons was an 8-0 success.
Watched by former Celtic strikers Henrik Larsson and Chris Sutton, who is back in Glasgow for a tribute dinner, Celtic set about their task with some relish. Nobody could have foreseen the visiting side slumping to a record loss, which was embarrassing for the supporters of such an established club.
Believe it or not, Aberdeen looked steady in the opening 25 minutes and created the first chance of the day when home goalkeeper Fraser Forster was forced to save from Chris Maguire.
Their stunning collapse began when Aberdeen skipper Harley was sent off for handling Ki Sung Yueng's shot on 24 minutes with his goalkeeper Jamie Langfield beaten.
Stokes stepped up to send the besieged Langfield the wrong way from the penalty spot before the day went dramatically downhill for the Dons.
They fell two goals behind a minute later when Hooper shrugged over Zander Diamond to convert before the former Scunthorpe striker added his second of the day by slotting home Niall McGinn's cutback.
Celtic were reduced to ten men when Rogne was sent packing for a fouling Maguire as he prepared to pull the trigger, but it hardly mattered. Celtic certainly weren't finished as Stokes slid home his side fourth from the penalty spot on 44 minutes after Langfield had felled Maloney.
Young visiting substitute Josh Magennis headed into his own net for Celtic's fifth goal on 59 minutes before Hooper completed his hat-trick on 63 minutes when he headed into the net from Stokes's cross.
The day continued to go from bad to worse for Aberdeen as Joe Ledley got in on the act with his side's seventh on 72 minutes as Stokes narrowly failed to convert his ball into the box, but the ball was already beyond Langfield.
Stokes completed his first hat-trick for Celtic when Maguire gave the ball away on 74 minutes before substitute McCourt finished off the scoring from the penalty spot after Ryan Jack fouled Maloney.
The win increases the pressure on the bamboozled McGhee, part of Aberdeen's European Cup Winners' Cup-winning side in 1983, who desperately requires a positive result when his side hosts Inverness Caledonian Thistle on Tuesday evening.
Terry Butcher's side are likely to provide a stern enough test. They drew 1-1 at Rangers last week, while they have yet to lose an away game in the SPL this season.

Celtic 9-0 Aberdeen

A potent display by Celtic's strikeforce blew Aberdeen away in an afternoon of high drama at Celtic Park.
Anthony Stokes opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Dons captain Paul Hartley saw red for handball.
Gary Hooper grabbed a brace before Celtic's Thomas Rovne also saw red, Stokes then converting another penalty.
Josh Magennis netted an own goal and Hooper claimed his hat-trick before Joe Ledley, a third for Stokes and a Paddy McCourt penalty completed the rout.

The home side started brightly, perhaps boosted by the news that club legend Henrik Larsson was watching from the stands, but could not carve out a clear chance in the opening minutes despite their pressure.
Stokes was the first to have a go at goal, picking up on a pass from Hooper, but his fierce right-footed drive flew over the bar.
Chris Maguire was first to have an effort for the visitors after Darren Mackie won the ball in midfield, but the young striker took too long before shooting allowing Celtic keeper Fraser Forster to narrow the angle and put the ball out for a corner.
Ki Sung-Yeung then fired in a shot from inside the box which Hartley blocked with his arm, referee Alan Muir pointed immediately for the spot and Hartley saw red.
Stokes sent Langfield the wrong way with his spot-kick to open the scoring – his sixth goal of the season.
Almost straight from the kick-off Celtic doubled their lead, Hooper outmuscled Zander Diamond before crashing a shot past Langfield from about 12 yards out.
Aberdeen's afternoon went from bad to worse when Hooper claimed his second of the match, as Diamond deflected Niall McGinn's cross into the path of Hooper who fired home from close range.
Rovne then hauled down Maguire on the edge of the box and referee Muir produced his second red card of the match, deeming the offence a clear goalscoring opportunity.
The half ended on a dramatic note in keeping with the way the game was evolving as Langfield brought down Shaun Maloney inside the six-yard box.
Stokes converted the penalty to double his own personal tally, with Celtic fans left wondering why Langfield was shown a yellow card rather than red.
Stokes and Hooper were causing the Dons defence all sorts of problems, and Hooper was left with the first chance of the second half, but his shot after chesting the ball was turned past the post by Langfield.
Hooper seemed eager to claim a hat-trick, and he flashed a volley just wide of the mark after a cut-back from right-back Cha Du Ri.
However, it was Magennis who scored next, putting his side five goals down as, stretching to head a cross clear, he diverted the ball past Langfield and into the net.
Hooper was not to be denied though, and, shortly after, he peeled off Diamond and flashed a back post header past Langfield.
Ledley then deceived Langfield with a low, driven effort with the visitors in complete disarray.
Almost straight from the restart, Stokes joined Hooper in grabbing a hat-trick, robbing Maguire of the ball before slotting calmly past Langfield.
Maloney was then brought down in the box for a second time for a penalty which this time was converted by substitute McCourt to put Celtic on cloud nine.
Celtic were toying with the visitors, whose confidence had utterly evaporated, leaving a question mark over the future of under-pressure Aberdeen manager Mark McGhee.

celtic football club statement

Newsroom Staff
CELTIC Football Club can confirm that an investigation is ongoing in connection with the banner unfurled at Saturday's game, and that those identified as being responsible will be banned from Celtic Park.

A Celtic spokesperson said: “The Club is currently carrying out an investigation into this matter. When it is concluded, it is the Club's intention to ban those identified as responsible from Celtic Park.

“Celtic fans have rightly earned a magnificent reputation for their positive behaviour and backing of the Club. It is extremely disappointing that the actions of a small minority have embarrassed Celtic and tarnished the Club in this way.

“These actions have no place at Celtic Park and, clearly, we apologise for any offence caused."

PoppyScotland Chief Executive Ian McGregor said: “I don’t believe for a moment it reflects the views of the overwhelming majority of Celtic supporters.”

A group of Celtic fans has angered ex-servicemen in the run-up to Remembrance Sunday after they unfurled a giant banner that claimed the poppy was “bloodstained” by military activity in Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan.

The behaviour of a minority of fans at Saturday’s match has infuriated a large proportion of the support, many of whom were astonished at the controversial display as the nation prepares to honour thousands of war dead this weekend.

Last night Celtic apologised for any offence caused and said they had launched an investigation into the incident, which would appear to breach stadium rules forbidding political demonstrations.

The charity Poppy Scotland described the flying of the anti-poppy banner during Celtic’s 9-0 victory over Aberdeen on Saturday as “disrespectful and regrettable”.

Some Celtic fans are uncomfortable supporting the Poppy Appeal because of the legacy of the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

One group called The Green Brigade regularly express republican views at games and in recent weeks has stepped up pro-IRA chants.

At half time on Saturday, fans unfurled a giant banner that read: “Your Deeds Would Shame All The Devils in Hell. Ireland, Iraq, Afghanistan. No Bloodstained Poppy on Our Hoops.”

The Parkhead club has already said this year marks the end of the recent practice of having the red poppy worn on the shirts of its star players.

However, the behaviour of a minority of fans has threatened to damage Celtic’s standing in the community during a sombre and poignant week when thousands of soldiers killed in two world wars and conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan are remembered.

Ironically, the club’s current chairman is Dr John Reid, now Baron Reid of Cardowan, who was Defence Secretary in Tony Blair’s Labour Cabinet and supported the war in Iraq.

Celtic fans’ online forums were incensed by the banner, with many believing the controversial display had gone too far.

A Celtic supporter calling herself DanniGhirl on the TalkCeltic forum wrote: “Trying to improve the atmosphere is great – and something that is well and truly needed and their displays look good, but things like their poppy protest was, in my opinion, ridiculous.

“Some of their song choices (especially at away games) leave a lot to be desired.

“Overall I’m happy they (The Green Brigade) are trying to improve the atmosphere but it sometimes can come across as them just being attention seekers.”

Another supporter calling himself Domo1888 wrote: “Do they not understand that the poppy isn’t just a sign of British Imperialism and that it commemorates everyone who’s died in war, whether it be the British troops, the Gerrys or even those who fought for the IRA?”

Poppy Scotland was quick to make its feelings known on the matter, but recognised the views of the Green Brigade did not represent Celtic supporters as a whole.

Chief executive Ian McGregor said: “Clearly, this incident was regrettable and disrespectful.

“However, I don’t believe for one moment it reflects the views of the overwhelming majority of Celtic supporters.

“The matter is something the club will have to deal with – we sympathise with them over the difficulty they face.”

Asked how servicemen and women would feel if they saw such a banner, Mr McGregor replied: “I would hope they would not judge a whole club’s support by the actions of a tiny minority.”

A Celtic spokesman said the faction responsible for the banner may be part of a smaller group within the Green Brigade, who were generally well behaved at games.

He added: “The actions of this small minority have no place at Celtic Park.

“We are investigating the matter and how the banner was brought into the ground. We apologise for any offence caused.”

Last year in Scotland, poppy buying raised £2.2 million.

The money is used to help the charity provide assistance to thousands of individual ex-servicemen and women, as well as helping to fund specialist services such as long-term care, housing and help finding employment.
