Trivia
- Fourth Round.
- Freddie Ljungberg debut for Celtic
- Double victory over Rangers (sort of) having defeated Glasgow Rangers 2-0 last Sunday also!
Review
Simple game which was quite unexciting. Some rough stuff from Berwick and they were lightly treated by the referee.
We still won with goals by Brown & Danny M. Brown's was a classy goal.

Berwick Rangers 0 Celtic 2: match report
Freddie Ljungberg finally made his debut for Celtic as they laboured to a win against their Third Division opponents in sub-zero conditions at Shielfield Park.
The wee Rangers started confidently, though, and might have had a penalty in the second minute when Steven Notman went down following a clumsy challenge from Charlie Mulgrew but their appeals were ignored.
Darren Gribben had the ball in the net for the home side four minutes later but the flag for offside had been raised before the striker shot.
Another mistimed tackle on Notman by Mulgrew in the seventh minute saw the Celtic full-back collect the first caution of the afternoon.
It was a towsy affair and Mark Wilson was next to be shown a yellow card when he clattered into David Greenhill just inside the Rangers half.
Celtic had been strangely hesitant but their nerves were settled when they opened the scoring courtesy of a schoolboy error by Berwick central defender Andy McLean.
Mulgrew’s free-kick should have been cleared comfortably but McLean took his eye off the ball and failed to make proper contact. It broke off him to Daniel Majstorovic and the Swede lashed it into the roof of the net from two yards out.
Ljungberg, deployed on the left of a midfield four, showed some nice touches but was mostly a peripheral figure during the opening 45 minutes.
The visitors should have moved further ahead in the 34th minute when Paddy McCourt and Georgios Samaras combined to leave James Forrest with only Mark Peat to beat but the winger’s shot lacked conviction and Mark Peat saved with ease.
Samaras appeared to be caught late after laying the ball off and was replaced by Anthony Stokes. Then Chris McLeod was booked for a forearm smash from behind on Ljungberg: it was football in the raw.
There was a glimmer of hope for Berwick in the 50th minute when Mulgrew was woefully short with a pass back but Lukasz Zaluska raced from his line to thwart Notman.
Ljungberg, clearly lacking match sharpness, was utterly anonymous after the break and it was no surprise when he eventually made way for club captain Scott Brown.
The Scotland midfielder injected some urgency into what had been an insipid Celtic performance and it was fitting that he should score the goal which put the outcome beyond doubt.
Beram Kayal, the most impressive performer on view, created the opening with a perfectly-weighted pass and Brown surged past two opponents before despatching an angled drive inside Peat’s right-hand post from 12 yards.
Celtic manager Neil Lennon spent Saturday watching a series of FA Cup shocks in England. With Berwick’s ground located south of the border, he was determined not to become the latest casualty.
“You look at those results and you realise that anything can happen on any day,” he said. “We had to be careful not to over-complicate things because the pitch didn’t suit the way we like to play.
“It was difficult for Freddie to make an impact under these conditions but he’ll get other opportunities to show what he can do.
“We’re relieved to get through. At 1-0 you worry about losing a goal from a ricochet or a set-piece but we defended very well and that gave us a platform to go on and win the game.
“This was a test of character for our players: it was all about attitude and application. Maybe the quality wasn’t always there but sometimes you have to accept that.”

Berwick Rangers 0-2 Celtic BBC
By Colin Moffat
Freddie Ljungberg enjoyed a winning Celtic debut but he and his team-mates had to work hard for their Scottish Cup victory at Berwick Rangers.
Daniel Majstorovic fired in a close range shot to give Neil Lennon's side a 17th-minute lead at Shielfield Park.
But the visitors toiled for long spells on a bumpy pitch against spirited Third Division opponents.
Scott Brown fired in a neat angled strike on 81 minutes to ease Celtic into the fifth round of the tournament.
However, the 3,877 packed inside the ground did their best to enjoy the occasion, making a din throughout a largely forgettable game.
And the chances of a major upset receded further when Celtic made an early breakthrough.
Charlie Mulgrew sent a curling delivery deep into the penalty box and after Andy McLean made a mess of his attempted clearance Majstorovic was on hand to smash the ball high into the net from close range.
James Forrest was presented with a great chance to double the visitors' lead when Georgios Samaras picked him out near the penalty spot but the unmarked winger took a clumsy first touch and goalkeeper Mark Peat was out swiftly to make the block.
Soon after, Samaras, the two-goal hero in last weekend's Old Firm victory, had to hobble off, with Anthony Stokes coming on as his replacement up front.
The part-time hosts had played just once since beating Cove Rangers in the last round on 20 November but showed no signs of fatigue during a bright spell after the interval.
Mulgrew was short with a back-pass and Celtic goalkeeper Lukasz Zaluska had to slide bravely to thwart the danger as Steve Notman charged into the penalty area.
And the Polish international had to make another courageous diving save to smother at the feet of David Greenhill, who had run on to a clever threaded pass from Gribben.
And the change in personnel paid dividends, with the club captain stretching Celtic's advantage with a fine individual goal.
With 10 minutes remaining, the midfielder went by two opponents inside the penalty box with a clever drag-back and a fortunate break of the ball before firing an angled strike into the bottom corner of the net.
Forrest was denied a late goal when a clearance rebounded off the back of his head and looped towards goal but Peat was able to adjust his feet and gather comfortably.
