Review

Aberdeen had been the proverbial Lambs ( you know, baby sheep) to the slaughter for us this season, there was zero danger this game was going to be any different.

This despite the best efforts of Craig `I don`t talk about other manager`s, but Lennon needs to calm down a bit` Brown.

There was a very healthy attendance from a Celtic viewpoint for our second semi final of the season against Aberdeen.

Considine was sent off by our favorite referee, Willie Collum for a clear foul on Hooper. Stokes subsuquently had his penalty saved by Langfield. If this gave the 10 men of Aberdeen any encouragment it didn`t really show, as the first half was played out with Celtic pressing and probing against a well organised Aberdeen defence.

It was slighlty frustrating to go in 0-0 at Half time but we were passing the ball well and making Aberdeen work, the general consenus in the stands was that we would eventually make the breakthrough,

We did.

A free kick from roughly 40 yards out was flighted in by Mulgrew, it went untouched by everyone despite Stokes` s best efforts to get a flick on it and drifted into the net. Poor goal for Aberdeen to lose but thems the breaks.

Charlie Mulgrews first goal since the Cis semi final at Hampden also against Aberdeen.

We duly added a second from Joe Ledley, at this stage of the season Ledley was looking more and more like a goal threat and he showed why here again.

When Stokes was fouled to give us another penalty Kris Commons grabbed the ball and showed Stokesy how to dispatch a penalty correctly.

There was still time for a returning Shaun Maloney to add a 4th a few minutes from time to set the seal on a very comfortable victory and book our place in the Scottish cup final.

This was our last game against Aberdeen this season and the aggregate score over 3 league and 2 cup games read Celtic 21-1.

Today also marked the first time the famous old Celtic end at Hampden would collectively do `the Huddle.`

It`s quite a sight.

Celtic march into Scottish Cup final against 10-man Aberdeen

Aberdeen 0-4 Celtic

  • guardian.co.uk, Sunday 17 April 2011 14.54 BST
For 45 minutes, this was an almighty struggle for Celtic. No doubt reeling from some half-time truths from their manager and benefiting as Aberdeen's early reduction to 10 men finally told, the Parkhead club improved markedly thereafter.

Neil Lennon's dream of a double during this, his first full season in charge, remains alive. Celtic will meet Motherwell in the Scottish Cup final on 21 May.

Aberdeen, who were thumped by the same opponents in this season's League Cup semi-final, had their hopes of a final appearance fatally undermined by the 18th-minute dismissal of Andrew Considine. The centre-half clipped Gary Hooper as he bore down on goal; Anthony Stokes saw his resultant penalty beaten away by Jamie Langfield but Celtic's numerical advantage always looked likely to be decisive.

Still, Aberdeen had held their own during that opening period. Chris Maguire headed their best opportunity at Fraser Forster while, aside from the spot kick, Stokes had been denied at close, one-on-one range by Langfield.

Aberdeen's goalkeeper was deceived by the Celtic opener. Charlie Mulgrew, a former Dons player, curled in a free-kick that was intended as a cross for Stokes. Not only did the striker fail to connect with a header, the bounce of the ball was also sufficient to beat Langfield for the first time.

Aberdeen lacked the resource and belief to recover. They had watched a goal from Maguire chalked off for offside only seconds before Joe Ledley doubled the Celtic advantage. Stokes was the provider, with a cut-back that the Welshman stroked home from 12 yards.

Celtic's second penalty of the tie extended their aggregate advantage over Aberdeen this season to 20-1. Derek Young conceded it, with a needless challenge on Stokes as he and the ball seemed to be running out of play. A change of taker prompted a change in result, Kris Commons slotting past Langfield from 12 yards.

The substitute Shaun Maloney completed the scoring from close-range after build-up work from Scott Brown and the impressive Mark Wilson. Aberdeen's only source of solace is that they do not have to meet Celtic again this season.

Aberdeen 0-4 Celtic

By Andy Campbell

Celtic will face Motherwell in the Scottish Cup final after comfortably beating semi-final opponents Aberdeen.

Anthony Stokes had a penalty saved by Dons goalkeeper Jamie Langfield following Andrew Considine's red card for the Pittodrie side.

Charlie Mulgrew's free-kick put Celtic ahead after the break and Joe Ledley's shot doubled their advantage.

Kris Commons converted Celtic's second spot-kick and substitute Shaun Maloney tapped home the fourth on 84 minutes.

With Neil Lennon's side chasing the Scottish Premier League title, Celtic remain in contention for a domestic double and will return to Hampden to face Motherwell, 3-0 victors over St Johnstone in Saturday's semi-final, on 21 May.
Aberdeen were first to threaten, Josh Magennis cutting in from the left and hammering a shot towards the near post that was beaten out by Fraser Forster, Chris Maguire unable to find a Dons team-mate after retrieving the rebound.

Celtic responded with Commons' cross headed narrowly over the top by the stretching Stokes.

Magennis threatened again when he cut into the heart of the pitch and dragged a left-foot shot wide.

Stokes had another gilt-edged chance when he ran in between Aberdeen's central defenders to latch on to Mark Wilson's terrific long ball, Langfield diverting the striker's shot wide with his legs.

Scott Vernon headed over the Celtic goal from Sone Aluko's cross as the action continued to swing from one end to the other.

Aberdeen conceded a penalty when Hooper ran on to Scott Brown's incisive pass and was tripped by Considine, who was sent off for the second time in successive matches against Celtic.
But, as was the case after Considine saw red for fouling in the box at Pittodrie in February, Stokes' spot-kick was saved by Langfield.

Stokes was foiled again by the Dons keeper when he whipped in a shot from the left.

Aberdeen could have taken the lead when Rob Milsom's superb chip into the box found Chris Maguire but the striker, who was now leading the line on his own, headed into the arms of Forster.

The depleted Dons were coming under more and more pressure as Celtic shelled crosses into the box but the defence were resolute with their clearances.

And Steven Smith, a pre-match fitness doubt, made a crucial intervention at the back post to block Stokes' goalbound shot.

Stokes was put through by Hooper at the start of the second but the striker took too long to get his shot away and Langfield smothered the effort.

But Aberdeen's resistance was broken in the 49th mintue when Mulgrew's free-kick missed everyone who was waiting in the box and bounced past the despairing dive of Langfield.

Smith made another timely block on a Stokes shot as Celtic pressed for a second.

Aberdeen had the ball in the net when Magennis headed on a long ball towards Maguire and neither he nor Forster appeared to get a touch as the ball bounced over the line.
However, the offside flag had been raised against the Dons striker.

And within seconds Celtic had doubled their lead as Stokes' low cross found Ledley on the run and the Welshman turned the ball past Langfield from inside the box.

Referee Willie Collum pointed to the spot for a second time after Young challenged Stokes near the byline and Commons drilled the ball into the net from 12 yards.

Commons volleyed over moments later after being found by Stokes and Langfield did well to snuff out the danger when Hooper burst into the box off Maloney's pass.

Aluko could not wrap his foot around the ball enough to direct his attempt on target after working the space to blast in a shot.

Celtic completed the scoring when Brown's low cross was turned back into the six-yard box by Wilson and Maloney, who had replaced Ledley, was on hand to finish.
