Review

(fatboab of KDS)
Score was just about the right one, but obviously sore that we conceded so late. however, given that we are usually a goal down before the ref has left the halfway line, tonight was a vast improvement.
Lennon got the formation right. Wanyama sitting in front of the back 4 did really well, and should be given the job on a regular basis, starting at mini-Mordor on Sunday.

Nerves seemed to evaporate as we coped well with anything Udinese could muster, and we deservedly went in a goal ahead.

Different story second half though, and they stepped it up with a couple of substitutions. We again shot ourselves in the foot though, and after Ki brought a wonder save from their keeper, we threw everyone forward for the resultant corner, leaving Wilson virtually 1 on 1 at the back. Their keeper gathered the corner, punts it up the park , and from the corner that they won from the break, they get the ball in our box and we concede a penalty. More experience both on and off the park could have prevented this, and we simply have to learn to protect leads.

Having said that, a much improved performance, and some good displays from the newer palyers augers well for domestic success.

and well done to the GB for terrific backing.

Celtic 1 Udinese 1: match report

Read a full match report of the Europa League game between Celtic and Udinese at Parkhead on Thursday Sep 29 2011.

Last week Joe Ledley warned his Celtic team-mates that “it is time that we were men and saw out a game”. Alas for the Welshman – who departed with a groin injury at half-time in Celtic’s first home match in Group I – the Hoops could not quite cross the line to emerge with what would have been a merited victory over Udinese. In this case, though, the villain of the piece, from Celtic’s point of view, was Turkish referee Bulent Yildirim.
The outcome was defined by penalties within three minutes of the start and end of normal time, the first falling to Celtic and converted by Ki Sung-Yeung after Lars Joel Ekstrand had fouled Gary Hooper. Hooper was involved in Yildirim’s second big call after the forward had tracked back to help in defence during a passage of Udinese pressure and was judged to have impeded Neuton Piccoli.
The home players furiously berated the referee – manager Neil Lennon looked as though he was about to burst a blood vessel as he hopped about on the edge of his technical area – but the award stood and Alem Abdi took due advantage by thrashing home the equaliser. Lennon afterwards denounced the decision as “shocking” and his sense of injustice was shared by the home support.
The award was undoubtedly contentious but TV replays showed that there was contact between Hooper and his opponent – the Celtic forward was pushing with his chest – but as penalties go, it was soft as a blancmange. The cost to Celtic is that it leaves them at the foot of their section, level on points with Rennes – whom they play next away on Oct 20 – but divided by a goal of difference.
Udinese muttered a complaint on their own account about a second-half strike by Mehdi El Mouttaqui Benatia, but the Moroccan was a good yard and more offside when he turned the ball beyond Lukasz Zaluska.
The Pole’s inclusion had itself been a talking point but Zaluska justified his selection at the expense of Fraser Forster with a productive evening’s work. His most eye-catching intervention was a block from a venomous shot from Mauricio Isla after Mark Wilson – Ledley’s replacement – had been caught on the turn. It will be interesting to see if Zaluska is favoured over Forster at Hearts.
The capriciousness with which football authorities now fix kick-off times set the tone and was reflected in the stands at a venue that has produced hair-raising nights of passion in Europe. On those occasions, the rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone was invariably accompanied by a spectacular rampart of striped scarves brandished aloft.
This time the effect was more like a neglected drystone wall, full of gaps, although a fair number of seats were filled after kick-off, presumably by workers whose employers were not willing to accommodate them with an early finish. Some certainly missed seeing their side take the lead.
Hooper, fizzing around in his customary style, was upended by Ekstrand, but seemed not to be about to get a favourable judgment from the Turkish referee. However, Mr Yildirim was simply waiting for confirmation from his assistant in his earpiece and signalled a penalty kick – not that such situations are necessarily rewarding for Celtic, as Neil Lennon observed with gallows humour recently.
There was no such difficulty for Ki, who converted coolly with a brisk, rising shot into the top corner. Celtic soon settled into a pleasing rhythm against an Udinese side who were certainly below strength.
The Serie A side only began to dominate proceedings – and even then, intermittently – towards the end of the match. Celtic, meanwhile, countered with menace from Ki and Charlie Mulgrew – whose rasping free-kick was punched away at the post by Samir Handanovic – and they looked eminently capable of securing a heartening European result until Mr Yilditrim bestowed Turkish delight on the visitors.

BBC Sport Scotland Ki Seung-Yung put Celtic ahead within the opening three minutes Celtic missed out on a valuable Europa League win after conceding a late penalty to allow Udinese a share of the points in Glasgow.
Ki Sung-Yueng put Celtic ahead from the spot, when Gary Hooper was fouled inside the box after just two minutes.
But 83 goalless minutes later Hooper was judged to have fouled Brazilian Neuton inside the box with Almen Abdi slotting home the resultant penalty.
The outcome leaves Celtic bottom of Group I on goal difference.
Manager Neil Lennon had made significant changes to his line-up: with goalkeeper Lukasz Zaluska back in favour having not played since the signing of Fraser Forster in the August transfer window.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • The result ended Celtic's run of four consecutive home wins in Europe
  • Celtic have not lost in eight games against Serie A opponents at Celtic Park since AC Milan's 1-0 win in 1969
  • The match was Udinese's first game in Europe against Scottish opponents

Glenn Loovens and Anthony Stokes were also dropped in favour of Victor Wanyama and Mohamed Bangura, who made his first start.
Within two minutes Hooper found his way into the opposition box, only to be fouled by Joel Ekstrand – the additional assistant behind the goal appearing to confirm the award of a penalty.
The resulting spot-kick was taken by Ki, the Korean coolly executing a perfect strike into the top left hand corner to give Udinese keeper Samir Handanovic no chance.
Having travelled with a weakened squad and without talismanic striker Antonio Di Natale, the Italians appeared to struggle with Celtic's early pace: Zaluska untroubled in the opening 20 minutes of his return to first team action.
The Poland international was called into action in the 22nd minute to deal with a long-range shot from midfielder Emmanuel Badu which he pushed round the post. Midfielder Almen Abdi also forced a save with a shot from 18 yards out six minutes later. Almen Abdi equalised with four minutes left of regulation time. But Hooper delivered an instant reply: finding himself in space 25 yards out and powering a shot towards the Udinese goal, Handanovic forced to parry the ball away to keep the deficit at a single goal.
And despite the inexperience of a team with seven players aged 23 or under, the Italian side held on until the break: Ki closest to extending Celtic lead with a free kick 20 yards out in the 37th minute which he sent wide.
Joe Ledley failed to emerge for the second half and was replaced by Mark Wilson who was forced to adapt to a game still being played at blistering pace.
Celtic looked in no real danger of losing their lead until in the 62nd minute Medhi Benatia had the ball in the net from Cristian Battochio's chipped free-kick 30 yards but amid more confusion referee Bulent Yildirim consulted his lineman and ruled that Benatia was offside.
The home side increased their attacking options with the introduction of Georgios Samaras and there were late chances for Ki at one end and Mauricio Isla at the other, who forced a tremendous save from Zaluska with six minutes remaining.

I don't know what the referee was thinking. It's a shocking decision. But I'm delighted with the team

Neil Lennon

But Celtic's undoing was to be beyond the keeper's control, Hooper appearing to body-check Udinese defender Neuton inside the box with Lennon's side just minutes from victory. On this occasion the referee Yildirim had no hesistation in pointing to the post, with Abdi slotting the ball into the net to level the tie.
Celtic had an opportunity to rescue the game in the dying seconds when Samaras was fouled just outside the box, but Mulgrew's left-footed effort was parried clear to end the Glasgow side's hopes of a first win in Europe this season.
