Review

(Rossi of KDS)
Three points is all that matters.

We played really well in the first half. The passing was quick and our movement was great. Two good goals but we probably should of scored another one which would've avoided the second half nerves. We need to really make it count when we play like that.

We have to watch these second half performances. You cannot let your performance dip like that and expect to keep winning. I thought the bottle merchants were going to make an appearance again. If it had been an away fixture we may not have won.

I thought Charlie Mulgrew was outstanding the entire game. He is a monster in the air, reads the play well on the deck and he can pick a pass. :worthy:

Good to see KC back as well.

Celtic 2-1 Dundee United

Saturday, 14 January 2012 17:19

RTE Sport

Celtic went two points clear of Rangers again at the top of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League with a nervy win over Dundee United at Parkhead.

First-half goals by striker Gary Hooper and midfielder Victor Wanyama gave the home side a comfortable interval lead and it looked like they would go onto coast the game.

However, visiting midfielder John Rankin pulled a goal back five minutes after the break to set up an uneasy second half for Neil Lennon's side.

In the end, though, Celtic did enough to leapfrog the champions who had beaten St Johnstone 2-1 at McDiarmid Park earlier in the day, while extending their winning run in the SPL to 11 games.

Hooper and Wanyama were two of five changes made by Lennon for the visit of the Taysiders.

Goalkeeper Fraser Forster, defenders Adam Matthews and Thomas Rogne also came in, with Lukasz Zaluska, Kelvin Wilson, Cha Du-ri, Ki Sung-yueng and Paddy McCourt all dropping to the bench.

For the Tannadice side, defender Robbie Neilson replaced Stuart Armstrong, who started as substitute.

United had not won in the east end of Glasgow since a 1-0 victory on St Stephen's Day, 1992 and they had manager Peter Houston in the stand, serving the first of a two-game ban for criticising match officials following their recent defeat by Aberdeen.

It was the visitors, though, who had an encouraging start to the game.

In the eighth minute Forster had to make a good save from United defender Garry Kenneth's drive from 12 yards after Gary Mackay-Steven's cross from the left found its way to the back post.

However, United found themselves two goals down in the space of five minutes.

In the 12th minute Hooper, subject of two rejected bids so far from Southampton, drove the home side into the lead after a swift Celtic break all too easily cut open the United defence following a mistake by Sean Dillon.

The Parkhead striker ran onto an incisive pass from Anthony Stokes before confidently sending a right-footed shot past Dusan Pernis from 14 yards.

Five minutes later Wanyama, who picked up his Clydesdale Bank Premier League young player of the month award for December yesterday, rose highest in the United defence following a short corner between Georgios Samaras and Emilio Izaguirre to head the latter's cross past Pernis.

The Tannadice side, with Mackay-Steven looking good, tried to work their way back into the game but it looked a long way back.
United were racking up the corners which hinted at danger but the Celtic defence stood firm.

The Parkhead men appeared to believe the points were already in the bag as they eased their way towards the break, albeit still well in control.

In the 41st minute a decent move involving Johnny Russell, John Rankin and Mackay-Stevens ended with skipper Jon Daly sending a drive from 25 yards just past Forster's left-hand post.

But moments later Rogne headed Charlie Mulgrew's inswinging corner from the right past the far post, before Pernis made a good save from Stokes' ferocious right-footed drive.

The second half began with Pernis fumbling a Mulgrew free-kick before the visiting keeper had a fine block from Samaras's left-footed drive from the edge of the box.

It looked like the afternoon might turn into a Celtic procession but in the 50th minute United found themselves back in the game when Rankin's long-distance drive sped past Forster and went in off the post.

The Tannadice midfielder's goal stunned the Hoops support who groaned moments later when skipper Scott Brown and Stokes got in the way of each other in the United box in their bid to latch onto Matthews' cut-back, after the Wales defender had worked hard down the right to reach the byline.

The Taysiders scented blood and in the 57th minute, Forster making a great save from Daly's close-range header after United defender Paul Dixon got clear down the left to deliver a great cross.

Celtic survived the consequent corner but nerves were being stretched.

Celtic needed the third goal to alleviate the growing tension and Samaras had the chance in the 72nd minute when he raced into the box to meet a flighted cross from Matthews but the Greece striker's diving header went straight to Pernis.

As the game entered the last 10 minutes United, sprightly and energetic, stepped up their quest for the equaliser but Forster was well protected by his rearguard.

Samaras fired over the bar with five minutes remaining and there was no real late push by United, to the relief, no doubt, of the home support.

Celtic's two goals were scored in a five-minute period by Hooper and Wanyama Celtic regained the top slot in the Scottish Premier League with a hard-fought win at home to Dundee United.

Gary Hooper drove the hosts into the lead in the 12th minute after Anthony Stokes split the United defence.

Midfielder Wanyama doubled the advantage five minutes later when he headed an Emilio Izaguirre cross.

Five minutes after the break, John Rankin fired in an unstoppable strike, but Celtic held out to jump two points clear at the top of the table.

Hooper was one of five changes made by Neil Lennon, with Fraser Forster, Adam Matthews, Thomas Rogne and Wanyama all in.

For the Tannadice side, defender Robbie Neilson replaced Stuart Armstrong, who started as a substitute.

In the eighth minute Forster had to make a save when United defender Garry Kenneth drove from 12 yards after Gary Mackay-Steven's cross from the left found its way to the back post.

In the 12th minute Hooper drove the home side into the lead after a swift Celtic break all too easily cut open the Tannadice defence.

The Celtic striker, subject of two rejected bids so far from Southampton, ran on to an incisive pass from strike partner Stokes before sending a right-footed shot past Dusan Pernis from 14 yards.

Then, in the 17th minute, midfielder Wanyama rose highest in the United defence following a short corner between Georgios Samaras and Izaguirre, to head the latter's cross past Pernis.

Rogne then headed Charlie Mulgrew's inswinging corner from the right past the far post, before Pernis made a good save from Stokes' ferocious right-footed angled drive at the expense of a corner which came to nothing.

Shortly after the interval, Rankin fired United back into the game with one of his trademark squigglers that skidded in off the inside of the post with Celtic keeper Forster at full stretch.
Moments later, Daly's header was palmed away by Forster as United pushed to equalise.

Celtic soon found the tables turning as United regained some composure and sensed a chance to take something from the match.

Mackay-Steven's long range shot in the 70th minute could have levelled the scores, but it sailed over Forster's crossbar.

At the other end, a Samaras diving header landed straight in the arms of Pernis as the hosts sought to put the game beyond United.

Hooper fired a late free-kick into the Dundee United wall in the dying moments of the match, then Ki Sung-Yeung was too clever for his own good when bearing down on goal and United defender Kenneth was on-hand to clear the danger.

Fury as ex-ref Winter's personal website attributes vile rant at Catholic church to him

Former Premier League referee Jeff Winter was facing a public backlash on Wednesday night after his personal website carried an obscene attack on the Catholic church.

The comments appeared in the retired official's blog post 'Winter's World' in which he diaries a festive trip around Australia and New Zealand.

In the article dated Friday December 30, Winter seemingly makes reference to the fact Celtic had just overtaken Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premier League, before launching the verbal attack.

It read: 'Star man is once again the bearer of bad tidings. Celtic are top of the league!!

'Now the football implications are obvious, but what does it mean for the altar boys? Do they get abused in celebration? Would it gave [sic] been worse in the anger of defeat? Or would they just get abused anyway?

'What's this got to do with football, nothing, but anyone who backs the Catholic Church that is fronted by a dress wearing, Nazi, kiddy fiddling protector deserves all the vitriol it gets. FTP!!'

The rest of the article continues in a more reserved style, although it is littered with foul language and appears to mock a shop attendant, who is described as 'very well proportioned'.

The 56-year-old from Teeside has used his Twitter page to direct followers to later postings from the blog. In his profile on the social media site, he claims to be a supporter of Middlesbrough and Glasgow Rangers.

Winter, who published an autobiography in 2006 entitled 'Who's the bas**** in the black', retired from top-flight officiating in 2006 and now works as a television pundit and after dinner speaker. He regularly appears on Sky TV and talkSport.

Scots police probe anti-Catholic and Celtic-hating online rant made by English ref Jeff Winter

Daily Record

Jan 13 2012 Exclusive by John Ferguson

SCOTS police are investigating a sickening rant against Celtic and the Catholic church posted on former top English ref Jeff Winter’s website.

The internet diary entry called the Pope a “dress wearing, Nazi, kiddy-fiddling protector” and asked if altar boys would be “abused in celebration” after Celtic beat Rangers last month.

Celtic yesterday reported the matter to Strathclyde Police, who confirmed they had begun a probe.

Winter’s website was taken down shortly before 10am yesterday, hours after our story was published highlighting the online rant.

Winter, 56, is a former senior English Premier League referee, who took charge of the 2004 FA Cup Final between Manchester United and Millwall.

In his profile on Twitter, he claims to support Middlesbrough FC and Rangers.

The blog entry on Winter’s website told how “bad tidings” had been received about Celtic’s 1-0 Old Firm victory on December 28. It then launched into the hate-filled diatribe.

Elsewhere on the site there are other entries about Celtic, including a slur against Parkhead legend Jock Stein.

Winter is travelling in New Zealand and his mobile phone was switched off yesterday.

Winter worked as a pundit for Sky Sports and Talksport Radio after retiring as an official in 2004. He now speaks on the after-dinner circuit.

Football pundit Gabriele Marcotti said he contacted Winter to find out if the site had been hacked and received a reply saying his website manager was looking into it.

Celtic demanded an apology when Winter called Aiden McGeady a “cheating b*****d” and branded Neil Lennon “a hate figure” in 2010.

Winter could be prosecuted under the Communications Act. The Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications Bill, which was passed last month, has still to receive royal assent.
