Review

(vlad of KDS)
A good few players short of our "strongest XI", 4-0 up and further changes made, it would be harsh to criticise a 4-2 win at a historically tricky venue.

Conceding two late goals from a four goal lead late on is not the worst crime in the world.

Far more positive aspects about this game to reflect on surely.

The continuing development of a home grown striker who seems more than capable of taking his chance when asked by the manager.

Another game where we showed how effective starting at a high tempo and scoring early can be.

Victor Wanyama dominating, scoring in a fantastic all round performance.

Twardzik, another young man who appears to be coming along just fine thank you.

This is a venue where stronger, or more correctly, more experienced Celtic sides than the one fielded today, have gone, struggled and had to clean and lick their wounds in very phusical encounters.

We had this game, in between a massive European CL qualifier, put to bed just after half time.

I would reckon the manager will enjoy a good nights sleep after this one.

Before their arrival in Inverness, Celtic had endured a low-key start to their Scottish Premier League defence. A narrow win over Aberdeen and a draw at Ross County endorsed the theory that Neil Lennon's team lacked early season impetus on the basis of no championship competition, namely from Rangers.

How Celtic supplied a counter-argument here. They battered Inverness Caledonian Thistle up until the point of switching off in the closing minutes, thereby scoring four times at a venue which in the past has proved hazardous to Celtic teams. Make no mistake, this was perfectly comfortable for the visitors. It will have been of even more delight to Lennon that the win arrived without key players. Scott Brown, Georgios Samaras, Kris Commons, Joe Ledley, Thomas Rogne, Anthony Stokes and Beram Kayal sat out the trip north. James Forrest only appeared as a substitute when Celtic were four goals ahead.

Victor Wanyama, Charlie Mulgrew and the 18-year-old Tony Watt – twice –claimed the goals that demonstrated Celtic's superiority. Lennon can now focus on what should be a passage towards the Champions League on Wednesday evening. Helsingborg head to Glasgow trailing 2-0 from the first leg of their play-off meeting with Celtic.

"It was a great performance from start to almost finish," Lennon said. "To score four here at any time is good, but in the circumstances it's remarkable. That was as good as we have played here. We dominated the game, scored four and could have had more."

Lennon's glowing sentiment is of course understandable. Yet the pitiful nature of the hosts' performance must also be recognised during post-match analysis. Inverness gained respect and recognition throughout Scottish football amid a rapid rise through the league with players who became instantly identifiable even to passive onlookers. Now, Terry Butcher appears to have adopted a signing policy focusing on journeymen, none of whom have experience of the SPL.

Butcher may be proved correct in that and will of course have his own reasons for doing so. But Inverness were dreadful in every area here and the expanses of empty seats in home sections of the ground highlighted the fact that the local public are not exactly enamoured by what is on offer. Only Celtic's wastefulness and late generosity averted an embarrassing defeat for Butcher. "That was a long 90 minutes," admitted the former England captain. "We lost to a much better team. They could have scored more than four. Really, 4-2 sounds closer than it should have been."

Lennon handed a start to the Czech youngster Filip Twardzik and was rewarded; the midfielder was highly influential during the opening stages.

Wanyama headed Celtic into the lead with the simplest of headers from an Adam Matthews corner. Given Wanyama's height and presence, it should not have been difficult for Inverness to properly monitor him at a set play.

Mulgrew curled a Celtic free-kick against the crossbar moments later but Watt then doubled the lead. Twardzik played a fine through pass for the striker, who easily shrugged off the attentions of Gary Warren and offered a cool finish.

Already, it seemed a question of how many Celtic wanted to score; Watt should have had a second goal before the interval but delayed his run towards a Twardzik pass.

Mulgrew's strike came straight from the training ground. Matthews rolled a free-kick into his captain's path, Mulgrew sending a low left-foot shot past Ryan Esson.

Watt had been granted a starting place on account of a decent cameo appearance 15 miles north, in Dingwall, seven days earlier. His second goal and Celtic's fourth goal arrived after Matthews had played an Emilio Izaguirre cross back into his path.

Ross Draper offered Butcher a little solace, if far too little and far too late. The midfielder converted an Andrew Shinnie assist, before scoring at the second attempt when played in by the substitute Conor Pepper.

Celtic blew Inverness away with a great performance, before late slackness cost them a more comprehensive win.

They were quickly out of the blocks as Victor Wanyama headed in from Adam Matthews' corner.

Tony Watt curled in the second and battered in the fourth, with a well-worked move allowing Charlie Mulgrew to slot past Ryan Esson in between.

Ross Draper fired in two late goals to take the edge off Neil Lennon's joy and perhaps Terry Butcher's ire.

Lennon's side had struggled in the Highlands against Ross County last week, but there was never any threat of a repeat.

The visiting manager had expressed a desire pre-match for his side to start the game well, and he got his wish as Gary Hooper nutmegged Simon King before firing in a fierce shot, which Esson did well to push away.

It was from the resultant corner that Wanyama leapt to head emphatically past Esson, though the marking was suspect.

Celtic's lead was almost doubled on seven minutes after a hefty Draper challenge was penalised and Mulgrew crashed the free kick off the top of the crossbar from 25 yards.

The home side had spent virtually the entire first quarter of an hour on the backfoot, but Aaron Doran served notice of their ability on the offensive, bringing out a decent save from Fraser Forster with a long-range drive.

But as Caley Thistle pressed for an equaliser, Celtic picked them off on the counter-attack.

Mulgrew cleared from his own goal-line, it was helped on by Emilio Izaguirre and Wanyama to Filip Twardzik, who threaded the ball through to Watt. The striker drifted past King and curled the ball coolly beyond Esson.

Terry Butcher was infuriated by the ease with which Celtic were able to play through his side, but they almost got a goal straight back as Doran's cutback found Andrew Shinnie inside the six-yard box, but the striker poked the chance wide.

Watt might feel he should have had a second goal seven minutes before the break.

Hooper played a beautiful pass into the path of Twardzik down the left channel and when the young Czech rolled the ball across goal, Watt looked certain to score, but the angle beat him and he found only the side-netting.

Butcher no doubt had some harsh words to say to his players at the interval, but they were rendered meaningless after just three minutes of the second half.

A free kick earned by Hooper on the left side of the penalty area was rolled by Matthews into the path of Mulgrew, who side-footed into the bottom right-hand corner of Esson's net.

Watt again came within inches of a second goal after getting the better of Esson, but though he missed out on that occasion, he didn't have to wait too long to notch Celtic's fourth, rifling in from eight yards after good play down the left by Izaguirre.

Celtic took their foot off the gas, perhaps feeling they had earned the right to do so, but they were punished.

Draper burst into the box with nine minutes remaining to beat Forster at his near post and four minutes later he latched on to Conor Pepper's chipped pass to beat Forster at the second attempt.

That late slackness aside, there was plenty to please the Celtic manager, while his Caley Thistle counterpart will look to address some of his team's defensive frailties.

Celtic: Neil Lennon praises Tony Watt after double in Inverness
BBC
Celtic's Neil Lennon says two-goal Tony Watt has given him "food for thought" with fellow striker Anthony Stokes likely to be out for two months.

Watt was in the starting line-up as the Celtic boss rested several of his regular starters in Inverness.

Lennon was impressed with Watt and Filip Twardzic in the 4-2 win.

"It gives me a lot of food for thought," said Lennon. "I thought Watt had a sensational game and Twardzic was excellent as well."
Play media

The Celtic manager explained that he had to balance his squad in light of their Champions League commitments.

Celtic take a 2-0 lead into the home leg of their play-off round tie against Helsingborgs.

"We made the changes because we wanted to give the boys who will probably play on Wednesday as much rest as we can," Lennon told BBC Scotland.

"Tony has very good assets. He is full of running and was a real handful.

"Filip we've known about for quite a while and it was just giving him the opportunity to come in."

With midfielders Beram Kayal and Joe Ledley joining Stokes on the long-term injury list and fellow striker Daryl Murphy being ruled out for a month, Lennon was pleased that the fresh faces showed up so well.

"They have done themselves no harm at all and the senior boys – Lustig, Wilson, Wanyama, McCourt and Hooper – they all contributed brilliantly," said Lennon, looking ahead to the visit by the Swedes.

"The likes of Commons, Samaras and Brown, I am hoping that those three and Rogne will be okay to play.

"The squad is taking good shape now and, considering the hectic schedule we've had, they've performed very well."

Lennon was not overly concerned that Inverness scored two late goals.

"We were 4-0 up, so it was as good a time as any to make the changes and it gives some of the young boys first-team experience," he added.

"It is as good as we've played here. We were dominant throughout the game, scored four and could have had a few more."
