Trivia
- Scottish Cup fourth round
- Celtic embarrassed. Doesn’t matter it wasn’t full first team! Arbroath are a second division side (two divisions down from Celtic’s).
- Match to go to a replay.
- Celtic keep disappointing in home domestic matches, why? Can’t keep using Europe as an excuse!
- First start for Joe Chalmers. Concerns starting over Miku as Celtic player.
- Stories emerging of talks to merge the European Cup and the UEFA Cup to make the top tournament bigger. On this showing, we need to pick up our act.

Not what we need before our biggest game in a long while. Home form is shameful, but I really can’t fault Lennon for this one, he did tinker with the team, which is exactly what everyone else was crying out for, what else could he do? The players at home right now are just a joke.

Just in from a rare visit to Celtic Park. What a strange old season this is turning out to be. I was initially pleased with the team Lennon put out, was looking forward to seeing McGeouch and Ibrahim on each side and some match time for Brown ahead of Wednesday. However the performance was just so flat, devoid of any intent or purpose for long spells. There was the occasional flicker of clever play, largely through Ibrahim and Watt worked hard but very little else. Yes we created some chances but not nearly enough against a 2nd division side who are going through a slump of their own.
The 2nd half was a little better but we still lacked a real spark. Miku in particular was dreadful – showed no desire at all whenever he didn’t have the ball or any intention of winning it back when he lost it. I expected Lennon to be a lot angrier in his post match interview but he didn’t seem overly concerned. A trip up there in December is the last thing we need but credit to them and their sizeable support for their efforts.
It looks like we are struggling to get motivated with some games this season, it’s up to the manager and coaches to drill into them that their attitude to every game must be right. Odd to hear fans outside the ground screaming their anger at the manager and yet on Wednesday this young side could reach the last 16 of the Champions League which would be a fantastic achievement.

Celtic 1 Arbroath 1: match report
Celtic’s run of lamentable home form was extended in what was generally thought beforehand to be the formality of a William Hill Scottish Cup fourth-round tie against humble Arbroath of the Scottish Football League second division.
Roddy Forsyth
Telegraph
In a most extraordinary contest, Arbroath scored both goals but had to settle for a replay after a 1-1 draw.
The visit of Spartak Moscow for Wednesday’s Champions League group stage finale was clearly uppermost in the thoughts of Neil Lennon – who made nine changes to the Celtic side who won 4-0 at Tynecastle in midweek – and also for most of the Hoops support, as was demonstrated by the great swathes of empty seats, even in the lower stands, which were the only ones open to spectators.
Only Victor Wanyama and Efe Ambrose started from the team that beat Hearts, but with Scott Brown, Adam Matthews, Thomas Rogne and Miku also in the line-up, Celtic still heavily outgunned their SFL2 opponents. Nevertheless, the half-hour mark arrived with Abroath scarcely troubled and Scott Morrison having had to make only one save.
However, with the interval in sight the Red Lichties contrived to concede a ludicrous goal. Another Celtic attack ran out of steam and the ball trickled almost to a halt on the deadball line where Stewart Malcolm appeared to want his goalkeeper to pick up.
Morrison, though, stayed put and Malcolm decided to toe poke a clearance diagonally through the Arbroath penalty box only for the ball to bounce off the back of his unsuspecting fellow central defender, Alex Keddie, and into his own net. Lennon was clearly far from content to proceed on such bounty, to judge by the vigour with which Celtic set off from the restart.
But once more at home there was an unforeseen twist, to Celtic’s huge embarrassment. Wanyama fouled Derek Holmes 25 yards out for a free-kick which Steven Doris hammered, via a deflection, beyond Lukasz Zaluska. Celtic responded by hurling themselves desperately at the maroon ranks but despite the addition of three minutes of injury time, with Arbroath equally frantically booting the ball out of their box, the clock ran out on the Hoops, to the delight of the tiny but loud and euphoric contingent of travelling fans.
Prior to that, the outstanding drama of the day was to be found in the Highland derby, in Dingwall which was the lunchtime televised fixture. Viewers were served up a treat after Billy McKay – who scored the only goal of Caley Thistle’s first ever league win at Celtic Park last week – got his 10th of the season when he struck a spectacular volley past Mark Brown in the Ross County goal.
County drew level soon after the restart when Rocco Quinn netted from outside the box but Caley Thistle were in front again when McKay’s shot was deflected into the net off the face of Richie Foran, with the home players protesting vehemently that the Irishman was offside.
Once more Ross County drew level and again a deflection played a part, this time when an Iain Vigurs drive spun off a defender and into the net and when Richard Brittain also found the mark from a free-kick three minutes into injury time the home team looked certain to go through. Yet there was still time for another twist when Philip Roberts bundled home from close range to ensure a replay on Dec 11.
Elsewhere, a hat-trick from Johnny Russell and a double from Dundee United captain Jon Daly saw the Tanandice team through 5-0 at Stranraer, Andy Barrowman scored the only goal of the game for Dunfermline against Partick Thistle at Firhill while St Mirren were 2-0 winners at home to Brechin City.
The main action came late at Pittodrie, where Motherwell took the lead over Aberdeen through Jamie Murphy only for the Dons’ top scorer, Nial McGinn, to ensure a replay with his late strike. Dundee were 2-0 winners at Livingston and Falkirk went into the fifth-round draw after Kieran Duffie scored the only goal of their trip to Stenhousemuir.
Raith Rovers edged a win at home to Deveronvale, but Morton were only able to scrape a draw away to Turriff United. Forfar were 2-1 winners at home to Ayr United, but the other Ayrshire side, Kilmarnock, secured their place in the next round by beating Queen of the South 2-1 at Rugby Park.
BBC
Arbroath striker Steven Doris knocked in a late strike to earn a famous Scottish Cup draw for the Second Division side at Celtic Park.
Celtic had been gifted a bizarre own goal from Alex Keddie nine minutes before half-time.
The Arbroath defender was left helpless as Stuart Malcolm smashed an attempted clearance against him.
Miku hit the woodwork as Celtic pressed after the interval, but Doris levelled the game with his 87th-minute strike.
Celtic manager Neil Lennon shuffled his pack, making nine changes, with one eye on Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Spartak Moscow.
Play media
However, in front of a sparse crowd, his side began searching for an opener with Miku heading over after only three minutes.
Tony Watt saw an effort saved by Arbroath keeper Scott Morrison, with Victor Wanyama and Scott Brown both going close.
But the opening goal came shortly after, and arrived in bizarre fashion.
Malcolm attmepted to clear the ball on the bye-line, but it hit the back of Keddie and rebounded into the net.
Arbroath had their first effort on goal shortly after, when Lukasz Zaluska saved mark Baxter’s 20-yard drive.
Play media
As the visitors began to tire, Miku rifled a shot which cannoned off the junction of post and crossbar.
The hosts continued to be profligate in front of goal, with Wanyama heading over and Beram Kayal also firing wide.
And the visitors made them pay with less than five minutes left on the clock.
Doris firing the ball in frmo long-range which deflected past Zaluska and into the net to earn his side an unlikely replay at Gayfield on 12 December.
