Trivia

  • Friendly for the new upcoming season.
  • Summertime and the transfer window is underway.
  • Out so far: Miku, Lassad, Rogne.
  • In so far: Amido Baldé, Van Dijk.
  • Wanyama in team then out, with a twitter statement that he is to have a press conference soon so likely now away…
  • Embarrassing defeat with the Cliftonville match coming up soon. Admittedly our players need match fitness but is that an excuse for such a drubbing?
  • Tennis player Andy Murray (from Dunblane) made it again to the Wimbledon grand slam final, but this time wins! Beats the no.1 in the world in three straight sets. First British tennis player to have won Wimbledon since 1936. For all too young to understand this to the Brits is a very very big event and been a big bugbear. A very proud day for all, and produces one of Scotland's greatest ever sporting days with 40 per cent of the population watching it. He now holds Wimbledon, US Open and Olympic titles at one time together, in under 12 months.

You have to take pre-season friendlies with a pinch of salt but we should be able to put a team out that can avoid losing 6 goals to any team under any circumstances.
Friday could be even more of the same if we play an experimental team again.

Union Berlin are pretty slick team up front especially down the left side.

I hope Lennon puts out close to the team that will start next week.

CELTIC 2
(Samaras 3, Lustig 42)

DESPITE taking an early lead, Celtic were unable to complete the victory over Greuther Furth, falling 6-2 in Nuremberg.

Georgios Samaras opened the scoring after just three minutes, with Mikael Lustig adding a second for the Hoops just before the break. But two goals from Nikola Djurdjic, one from the penalty spot, and one from Kevin Kraus sent the home side into the break with a 3-2 lead.

Three goals for the home side in the second-half, fromDominick Drexler and two from Baye Djiby Fall, his second coming from another penalty, rounded off the win for the home side.

The Hoops got off to a dream start in the Trolli Arena, with the captain, Samaras, opening the scoring just three minutes into the match. He received a cutback from Lustig on the byline, and slammed it home from the centre of the box.

And with the one goal advantage, Celtic looked confident when they lined up a free-kick three minutes later. Anthony Stokes squared it to Charlie Mulgrew in a move straight from the training ground, but the defender´s low drive was blocked. Steven Mouyokolo attempted to follow through with the rebound but his effort was turned out for a corner.

However, Celtic´s pressure was short lived at the Greuther Furth end, and the home side began to push up the pitch once the match had settled.

Djurdjic, who faced the Hoops in last season´s UEFA Champions League qualifier for Helsingborgs, found space inside the box on the 11th minute and slotted the ball into Fraser Forster´s bottom corner, drawing the sides level.

And he continued to work the three-man backline in the following seven minutes, forcing Forster into an excellent save before shooting wide of target.

Celtic came back into the game for a spell, but the home side found a second goal just after the half hour mark. Forster produced another excellent save to turn Robert Zillner´s effort over the bar, but Kraus turned in the resulting corner at the back post.

It wasn’t long before Celtic had restored parity, though. Samaras and Stokes combined in a wonderful surge forward, and even though the Greek striker´s eventual shot was blocked, Lustig pounced to draw the sides even.

Greuther Furth took the lead again just before the break and this time it came from the penalty spot. A handball was given after Lustig and Samaras jumped to clear the ball and Djurdjic stepped up to convert from the spot.

Celtic made three changes at the break, and another three just after the hour mark, changing their shape from 3-5-2 to a more familiar 4-4-2. This allowed them to produce good pressure inside Greuther Furth´s half but they were unable to create an effort with an end product.

Djurdjic almost rolled home to complete his hat-trick on 56 minutes, but half-time substitute, Lukasz Zaluska had it covered. The striker was then taken off as the home side changed almost their entire line-up, and the string of substitutes proved to benefit them.

They capitalised on an empty penalty box on 74 minutes and Drexler managed to stay onside. He turned the ball into the net to extend the home side´s advantage.

And shortly after Florian Trinks and Thanos Petsos cracked efforts off the woodwork, Celtic conceded the second penalty of the match. The decision against Calum Waters was soft, but Fall proceeded to convert from the spot.

That wasn’t the end though, as Greuther Furth had one more goal in the bag. Fall headed home his second of the evening, two minutes from full-time, by bouncing it off the ground and into the net.

Greuther Furth 6-2 Celtic: Hoops hit for six

The Scotsman

Celtic are just a week away from Champions League football and if they play in Belfast the way they played in Bavaria’s Trolli Arena last night, even lowly minnows Cliftonville would have a chance against the Scottish champions.

Scorers:

Greuther Furth – Djurdjic (11, 44 pen) Kraus (34) Drexler (74) Fall (84, 88 pen)

Celtic – Samaras (3), Lustig (42)

Nothing should be read into pre-season games, of course, but Celtic were dreadful against a second tier German side. Neil Lennon’s men were woefully short of match sharpness and their defence in particular was sieve-like. It all needs a lot of sorting before the final friendly that opens Union Berlin’s new stadium in the German capital on Friday. Furth were Teutonically well-organised, while Celtic were a shambles.

Celtic were seeking the first win of their pre-season continental tour after losses to Sevastopol and Cluj, but manager Neil Lennon had said he would use the tour to experiment and he did so again.

From the start it was clear that Celtic were going to abandon their 4-4-2 formation of the first two pre-season matches and play 3-5-2 with Mikael Lustig and Emilio Izaguirre up on the flanks of a midfield that was still missing transfer target Victor Wanyama, but did feature Charlie Mulgrew.

After just three minutes it looked as if Celtic were on their way to achieving that elusive victory. Good work by Anthony Stokes sent Mulgrew away and his deep cross was knocked back by Lustig to Giorgios Samaras lurking in the box. The captain for the day made no mistake for a fine, well-worked goal.

It was illusory, as the lead lasted just seven minutes. Even early on, Celtic had trouble dealing with the speedy breaks of the German side, and when Zoltan Stieber broke, the Celtic back three were caught napping, Nikola Djurdjic cleverly side-footing the ball home.

Celtic’s passing was not up to their usual standard, and while the Scottish champions had the majority of the play, the German side who have just been relegated from the top division of the Bundesliga looked more dangerous, especially as they began to push forward more.

Celtic were unlucky. After Wolfgang Hesl in the Furth goal stopped a Lustig shot, the rebound cannoned off Steven Muoyokolo and trundled wide.

Forster, meanwhile, was keeping Celtic in the game, pulling off a spectacular save from Robert Zilner’s ****** shot. At the resultant corner, however, the entire Celtic defence was asleep and defender Kevin Kraus nipped in to score.

There was a glimmer of hope for the Celts when superb interplay by Stokes and Samaras set up Lustig for an equaliser after 41 minutes, only for a very dubious penalty – a free-kick hit an arm in the defensive wall – to give Djudjic his second and Furth’s third.

Lukasz Zaluska, Liam Henderson and Kris Commons replaced Forster, van Dijk and Mulgrew at half-time as Celtic switched to a 4-4-2 formation, with Furth also making changes to mirror their visitors’ new set-up. The home side would go on to change their entire line-up without apparently missing a beat, while Celtic also made a raft of changes but frankly were all over the place.

Despite Celtic continuing to have enough possession, it was no surprise when a quick move brought a fourth goal for Furth. Stephan Furstner’s cross from the right caught substitute Dylan McGeouch expecting offside, but Dominick Drexler played to the whistle and thumped the ball home.

Substitute Calum Waters then showed his inexperience in conceding a soft penalty to the gently falling Furstner, Baye Djiby Fall converting the spot kick, before the same player headed a humiliating sixth goal past Zaluska with two minutes left to play.

On this evidence, much work needs to be undertaken by Celtic before next Wednesday. Lennon will ensure it is done – he wants that Champions League place above all.
