The front four just didn't cut it. Pukki lacked decent service, but the touches he had looked clumsy. You can see that in the wee clip of the penalty decision. Boerrigter wasn't utilized enough in the first half to play his way into the game and bar one or two nice touches and the odd decent cross was pretty awful. For some reason McGeouch started to look a bit livelier after Rogic went off, but still produced no more in those nine minutes than he had in the previous 65. As for Rogic, I'm not sure what I was watching. If he is supposed to be a creative type, he created the square root of eff all. If he isn't, he is being played in the wrong position, although I remember him saying after that decent performance up at Inverness that he prefers to play further up the field. Perhaps he lacks confidence or game time or something else that will come. Or maybe not.
With the front four making nothing of their day and four attacking options on the bench changes should have been made much sooner. I don't expect them at half time, because I've come to expect Celtic managers not to make substitutions at half time. But it wasn't unreasonable to expect a couple of replacements five or ten minutes into the second half, when what we were doing still wasn't working. Instead we waited until the magic 65 minute mark for one change.
Then there was the change to a back three which was a bad idea in that it forced players to adapt when we were quite comfortable. We didn't have a problem with possession, or with getting players forward. I can see the argument that it was to allow space for Commons, but the formation switch didn't really do anything for us. Mulgrew in particular looked uncomfortable in his left wingback-ish role.
The real desperate move was throwing Van Dijk forward. He won a lot of high balls, but could do nothing with them. They seemed alternately to either fall in no-man's land as we didn't have anyone on Virgil's wavelength, or the balls themselves were poor and all he could do was get his head on them. Sometimes the crosses were from deep and to deep, so although Van Dijk won them there was still 25 yards to goal and a line of Morton defenders to negotiate. Even crappy teams that do nothing but 'long ball' attacking don't score from that sort of delivery. I hear Lennon is saying Virgil was up there to "give us something different", and that makes sense. But it looked for all the world like that was a decision made completely on the hoof at half time in extra time.
For a manager who has been so meticulous in his planning for some of our finest European moments, tonight's tactics looked half arsed. And it's hardly the first time. Remy, The Green Lantern and others have already alluded to it. Quite often we look utterly pish against very limited opposition. Some of our problems are really fixable. 27 corners and no goals? I was going to go on about that, but I need my bed. I'll just say that's fixable.

League Cup: Morton clinch stunning win over Celtic
The Scotsman

A DRAMATIC injury-time penalty by Dougie Imrie gave Morton a shock 1-0 Scottish League Cup third-round win over Celtic at Parkhead last night.
Five minutes into the extra period after a stalemate during normal time, the Morton player scored from the spot after referee Bobby Madden adjudged Celtic defender Efe Ambrose to have handled when challenging substitute Archie Campbell.
Celtic, who had been lacklustre for most of the game, pounded the Morton goal in an attempt to get back level and Charlie Mulgrew hit the post in the dying seconds.
However, on night of unlikely drama, the resolute visitors were not to be denied.
With the top tier of the stadium closed and the rest of the ground far from full, the first half was pretty uneventful not to say uninspiring.
Mulgrew, playing at left-back in a reshuffled Celtic side, came closest to scoring with a free-kick which was tipped away for a corner by Ton’s French goalkeeper, Nicolas Caraux.
However, Morton, second-bottom of the Scottish Championship, defended stoutly for the rest of the 90 minutes without offering much of a threat in attack but Imrie’s penalty was all they needed.
Celtic manager Neil Lennon had noted beforehand that he had not yet won this trophy as a manager and he will have to wait at least another year. The defeat also put an end to any hopes of Celtic winning a treble this season.
In the other third-round ties played last night, the three Scottish Premiership sides made comfortable progress.
Liam Craig completed his first-ever hat-trick as Hibernian clinched a quarter-final slot with a 5-3 win over Stranraer at Easter Road. Hibs’ summer recruit Abdellah Zoubir also found the net and Stranraer’s Scott Rumsby scored an own goal. Stranraer got on the scoresheet thanks to Chris Aitken and a Michael Nelson own goal.
At Dens Park, Billy McKay netted his seventh goal of the season to give Inverness Caledonian Thistle a 1-0 win over Dundee. But Terry Butcher did not believe his team deserved the win.
“If we go play like that against Hibs on Saturday we will be turned over,” said Butcher. “Fair play to Dundee – they deserve to go through and not us. They bossed the game. I told Bomber [Brown] that his side were excellent and deserved to go through.”
At New Douglas Park, St Johnstone beat Hamilton Accies 3-0.
Stevie May returned to haunt his former club as he scored a double, while Gwion Edwards came off the bench to claim his first goal for the club.

Championship strugglers Morton took a famous scalp as Dougie Imrie's penalty knocked Celtic out of the League Cup.
Despite building early pressure, Celtic failed to show composure in front of goal in a scoreless first 90 minutes.
And the Greenock outfit made them pay, Imrie scoring from the spot in extra time after defender Efe Ambrose was penalised for handball.
Celtic, second in the top flight, pressed for a leveller but Morton held on for a memorable win.
The Scottish League Cup remains the one domestic trophy Celtic boss Neil Lennon has yet to win and he will need to wait at least another season after Allan Moore's side booked their place in the quarter-finals.

Visiting goalkeeper Nicolas Caraux was in inspired form to thwart Celtic time and again as the champions proved profligate.
Charlie Mulgrew tested Caraux with a free-kick as the hosts sought to turn their early territorial advantage into a goal.
The visitors, who sit second bottom of their division, were content to give Celtic possession and attempt to hit them on the break.
Celtic, struggling to breach a spirited Morton rearguard, threatened through Tom Rogic 10 minutes into the second half but Caraux was ultimately untroubled.

The visitors then appealed for a penalty when Fouad "Fred" Bachirou took a tumble on the edge of the area, but the referee waved them away.
With Celtic unable to profit from a succession of corner kicks, the tie went into extra time and Morton took the lead from the spot in the 97th minute.
Ambrose was penalised for handball and Imrie, proving to be the coolest man inside Celtic Park, fired home to send the Morton fans wild.
Virgil van Dijk won countless headers inside the box as Celtic pressed for an equaliser but chances for Mikael Lustig and Mulgrew were spurned as Morton held on for their first win at Celtic Park since 1971 and their first over Celtic since 1985.
