Walking up to Paradise last night things were very subdued. Very little in the way of positive energy from the fans and no sign of any Maribor fans until a minute or two before the game when the clowns came in.

It seemed obvious from the start that the team selection was wrong and would leave us open to attack.

Deila said recently that Denayer was a " £10m player". He drops him for the last two games, puts Ambrose to right back and plays Lustig at centre half.
He also said "Griffiths was the best goalscorer he has ever seen" yet drops him.
He brought on Derk "Cinderella" Borreighter. Why? Done nothing for us. Nothing.
Stokes; played three years of European football and scored no goals. Ok for SPhell. Ordinary for Europe.
He said post match we had moved on from Legia. Really!? How!?

I think John Collins came out the dugout once. Not once did I see any of the management rage or encourage.

As much as I love Izzaguirre, I feel he is a total liability in Europe. Numerous games down the last few years in Europe have show he has been culpable for quite a few goals. Then there is Effe Ambrose. He was turned inside out that many times he must have thought he was on a Waltzer. His positional sense was ridiculous and his passing was nothing short of pub team standard. Time and again he left his man completely alone on the left wing and often wee McGregor had to help shore things up.

Why oh bloody why did he not play Virgil and Jason in the centre with Lustig on the right? Lustig in full flow is a good player but we decided to do away with our ability to attack though the right back spot. On top of that he plays Stokes out wide (as Lenny used to do with Samaras) and when anyone put the ball in for Stokes, he was posted missing. That was because he was the player crossing the ball for himself!!

The energy in the team was wrong. They looked tired bar McGregor, Lustig, Virgil and Stefan. Only Stefan charged at them and yes made mistakes but looked like he gave a feck. Often They looked as if they were at odds, particularly Mulgrew and Johansen.
Stevie Wonder could see things were not going to work yet he waited til half time to change it. Immediately things improved for 15 minutes when Common came on. (btw the number four should have been off after a yellow card then a punch to Commons)

At one point Virgil was remonstrating with Deila from the half way line about what was going on ahead of him .Virgil has to go now and develop his career and should have the blessing of the support imo.No less than £15m Peter!!!!! You owe us big time.

Berget?- Poor man's Martin Hayes.

Kayal had a good game ? Sorry, but he was poor. If we are judging players on headless runs then Mulgrew and Kayal would be world class. Kayal to his defence was utterly fecked after ten minutes. Completely out of gas so how did he pass a fitness test!?

I could see no problem last night with Virgil, Callum, Gordon, Lustig and Commons and Stefan did a wee bit better than the others but if the rest never play for us again I would be quite happy.

It seemed ridiculous to think at the start of the "campaign " that a young kid would emerge and be a sensation. McGregor looks the real deal and I'd be tempted to play him up front. In fact, I would be tempted to build a team around the wee man with a view to producing a team with up and coming players from the UK until we are back where we should be. I honestly think the Manager is not up to this job and we should part before he does any more damage.

CELTIC perpetrated the footballing equivalent of leaving a winning lottery ticket in the pocket of a pair of jeans in the washing machine as they slipped out of the Champions League last night.

Scorers: Maribor – Morales Tavares (75)

NK Maribor win 2-1 on aggregate

Odds-on favourites to reach the money-spinning group stage for a third successive season following their third qualifying round reprieve against Legia Warsaw, Ronny Deila’s team were unable to see out a winning position against Maribor.

Brazilian striker Marcos Tavares scored the only goal of a desperately frustrating night for Deila, consigning Celtic to the consolation prize of Europa League football. The Scottish champions were undone by a combination of feckless finishing and, at the crucial moment, fatally indecisive defending.

Although Celtic began the evening in a winning position, courtesy of Callum McGregor’s away goal in Slovenia, there was little concession in their strategy to simply holding what they had.

For, while playmaker Kris Commons was again named among the substitutes, with Beram Kayal preferred for additional defensive security in midfield, Deila’s team were immediately on the front foot as they set a ferocious tempo in the early stages.

There was anxiety for the Maribor defence inside the first 60 seconds when Mikael Lustig burst forward and found Emilio Izaguirre on the left. His teasing cross narrowly eluded Anthony Stokes’ stretching attempt to connect with it in the six-yard box.

The breathless pace of proceedings, with Celtic pressing hard and high up the pitch, held the promise of an early breakthrough. It so nearly came in the fifth minute from a situation similar to how Celtic scored in the first leg. Stefan Johansen found Jo Inge Berget on the left of the penalty area and the midfielder drove the ball low across goalkeeper Jasmin Handanovic towards the centre of the six-yard box.

It looked as if Stokes was going to be presented with a simple tap-in to an unguarded net but Maribor central defender Marko Suler slid in at the last second to divert the ball narrowly wide for a corner.

Celtic were unable to sustain that intensity of pressure, however, and the visitors gradually worked their way back into the contest with some patient and precise passing football of their own.

Agim Ibraimi’s clever movement, as he foraged in the space behind striker Jean-Philippe Mendy, began to pose problems for the home defence. The Macedonian international posted Maribor’s first effort on goal with a 20 yard shot just off target. The shift in momentum continued when Ibraimi tried to set up Tavares with a smart reverse pass into the penalty area, the forward denied a shooting opportunity by Efe Ambrose’s block.

Virgil van Dijk passed up a fine opportunity to ease the growing tension for Celtic when he was picked out by Stokes’ corner from the left in the 23rd minute, but the big Dutch defender wastefully headed the ball wide of Handanovic’s left hand post from a couple of yards.

That let-off did nothing to lessen Maribor’s growing confidence and they came close to taking the lead six minutes later. Mitja Viler was afforded all the time he needed to drive infield from the left and drive in a dipping shot which Craig Gordon could only parry back out into the path of Tavares.

Fortunately for Celtic, the Brazilian striker was unable to control the loose ball which simply cannoned off him and went straight back into the hands of the goalkeeper. Deila, whose body language in the technical area betrayed his unhappiness at the way the match was progressing, decided change was needed at the start of the second half and introduced Commons for Kayal.

Although his first involvement saw him collect the first booking of the night for dissent, Commons duly provided the fresh impetus and attacking imagination Celtic required.

Ambrose flashed a right foot shot narrowly wide from a Stokes free-kick, then Callum McGregor came agonisingly close to another precious European goal when his stabbed effort from close range struck the crossbar after good set-up play from Berget and Stokes. As Commons then sent a dipping 25-yard shot just over, the Celtic support were re-energised. But Maribor remained a threat on the break and almost made one count in the 66th minute, Dare Vrsic breaking free and seeing a close range shot well saved by Gordon.

But the recalled Scotland international keeper was left helpless when Maribor stunned Celtic Park with Tavares’ 75th minute goal. It was a defensive mess from Celtic’s point of view, Ambrose and Izaguirre both unable to clear in a scramble after a Vrsic shot was blocked. The ball broke to Tavares whose shot bounced up off the turf and looped over Gordon into the roof of the net. Maribor almost put the outcome beyond doubt two minutes later when Ambrose, enduring a wretched night, allowed Mendy to cut inside him and curl in a shot which Gordon did well to keep out as he dived to his right.

Ambrose and van Dijk both missed simple close range opportunities to force the tie into extra-time and the celebrations belong to Maribor as they joined European club football’s elite for the first time since 1999.

Celtic produced another below-par European performance as they were dumped out of the Champions League.

The home side were heavy favourites to progress, having come back from Slovenia with a 1-1 draw last week.

But they barely tested visiting goalkeeper Jasmin Handanovic in their biggest game of the season.

And Maribor captain Marcos Tavares forced a shot past Craig Gordon on 75 minutes to end hopes of a third successive year in the group stage.

The defeat is a huge blow to Celtic, who will miss out on the £14m they earned in the competition last season as well as the glamour and excitement that accompanies Champions League nights.

The Europa League is scant consolation for Ronny Deila, though after the good fortune that took them past Legia Warsaw by default, there can be little complaint.

Legia crushed Celtic 6-1 on aggregate in previous qualifying round but the Scottish champions were reinstated because the Poles fielded a suspended player in the last few minutes of the second leg.

The Celtic manager and board will come under criticism for a failure to negotiate the qualifying stages successfully, particularly after that earlier reprieve.

The hosts had had ample warning before the solitary goal was scored, but they failed to clear their box and when Ales Mertelj's shot was blocked, Tavares did brilliantly to scoop the ball over Gordon, who was left clawing at air.

Virgil van Dijk saw his stoppage-time shot well saved

Efe Ambrose, who had almost gifted Jean-Philippe Mendy a second, clattered a header just wide of the post from close range, but that was as close as Celtic came to an equaliser until the final moments when Virgil van Dijk looked on in disbelief as Handanovic superbly saved his stoppage-time shot from eight yards.

A Callum McGregor effort, which came back off the crossbar, marked Celtic's best period in the match, at the start of the second period, following Kris Commons' introduction for Beram Kayal.

But, having seen off a first-half storm, Celtic could not make their spell of dominance tell.

Although they seldom found any fluency in the opening 45 minutes, Celtic could easily have been in front early on when Jo Inge Berget's cross was diverted inches wide of his own goal by Marko Suler.

And, even in the midst of the heavy first-half pressure from Maribor, Van Dijk should have done better than head wide from an Anthony Stokes corner.

Both chances came against the run of play, with Agim Ibraimi and Zeljko Filipovic dictating for the visitors.

For all their possession the team in purple only occasionally threatened Gordon, with Mitja Viler forcing a nervous-looking save, which came back off Tavares and, fortunately for the keeper, back into his arms.

But Tavares and Maribor were to have the last word, as Deila and Celtic count the cost of failure.
