Good goal but we seem to make some very poor decisions in their penalty box
Second goal would have killed the game but when we could get it we began to lose shape
We spend a huge amount of energy running with the ball and looked knackered in the last 10 minutes
Once again we looked very soft especially in midfield
Substitutions never really gave us a lift nor changed the game in our favour
Good to win but need to remember this was Inverness we were playing – who had a team full of guys from the lower leagues in England!

John Guidetti's ninth goal in seven games proved enough to seal Celtic's fifth consecutive win – but Inverness were left raging that the strike stood.

The Swede scored on a 49th-minute counter-attack but Caley Thistle claimed Scott Brown had unfairly won the ball to spark the move.

Guidetti soon had a penalty claim rejected before Celtic survived a late onslaught to hang on for a 1-0 win.

Caley Thistle created four clear chances in the final eight minutes but some poor finishing cost them and allowed Ronny Deila's men to move up to second spot in the Scottish Premiership.

With Craig Gordon rested, Lukasz Zaluska came into the Celtic team for the first time since being injured in an alleged assault in Glasgow last month.

The Pole was tested within 90 seconds when midfielder Graeme Shinnie made space to shoot from 25 yards and the goalkeeper held at the second attempt.

Inverness manager John Hughes dropped striker Billy McKay to the bench and brought in defender Carl Tremarco, who took Shinnie's normal role at left-back.

Marley Watkins played up front for Caley Thistle but he was largely isolated in the opening half as a five-man midfield played close to a back four.

Celtic got behind the mass of blue shirts early on when Stefan Johansen cut the ball back for Guidetti but the Swede sent a first-time effort over the bar.

Mubarak Wakaso had a shot deflected wide after Shinnie had given the ball away in a dangerous area but Inverness were looking comfortable.

Anthony Stokes failed to make the most of two half chances from crosses and Celtic were restricted to long-range efforts in the latter stages of the half. Dean Brill beat away Virgil van Dijk's powerful effort before Stokes and Brown drove not far wide.

Shinnie fired over from 22 yards after good play from Danny Wiliams just before the break.

The game exploded into life when Brown won the ball midway inside the Inverness half before giving the ball to send Stokes on the charge.

Caley Thistle were suddenly exposed and, although Stokes under-hit his pass to Guidetti, the Swede managed to work enough space to fire past two defenders and beat Brill with the power of his strike.

However, the visitors were furious with referee Craig Thomson for missing what they claimed was a pull on the shirt of Danny Williams by Brown when he won possession.

Watkins was booked for protesting and the controversy continued moments later when Guidetti had two penalty appeals rejected in quick succession.

The on-loan Manchester City forward claimed handball when his shot was blocked as several visiting players dived at his feet and then appeared to be bundled over by Tremarco, but a free-kick was given against him after he fell on the ball.

Ross Draper was booked for confronting Guidetti after a number of players got involved in the recriminations.

The visitors had a good chance to level when Shinnie fed Williams but the left-winger fired over from 15 yards.

Wakaso and Tremarco received yellow cards for late tackles as the game remained tetchy.

It was also far more open with Inverness bringing on Ryan Christie, Aaron Doran and McKay in the hunt for an equaliser and consequently leaving more gaps at the back.

Shinnie shot wide with the aid of a deflection from a decent position before van Dijk missed a good chance at the other end.

And Inverness put Celtic under intense late pressure. Greg Tansey blazed over from 16 yards after Doran's shot was blocked and Tremarco nodded over after Gary Warren had headed a corner into the six-yard box.

Warren set up another opportunity in injury-time but McKay could not get enough on the ball from six yards and Zaluska pounced to smother, before the Pole saved Tremarco's downward header and scrambled the bouncing ball over the bar.

Celtic moved closer to the summit of the Premiership with a deserved victory over a dogged Inverness CT side.

Only a single strike was required, and it came from John Guidetti, with his ninth goal in seven matches, which moved Celtic above their opponents.

The breakthrough came early in the second half and reflected Celtic's dominance of the ball and the game.

Inverness pressed hard for a leveller, though, and a late Lukasz Zaluska save preserved the home side's lead.

Tenacity was the first requirement of Celtic. They hoarded possession against a Caley Thistle team that set out with restraint as its purpose, lining up with five in midfield and leaving Marley Watkins to forage around up front on his own.

The result was a challenge to the home side's ingenuity, since the Inverness defenders sat so deep that there was little room for the Celtic attackers to find space behind the back line. Celtic came closest through long-range efforts, with Mubarak Wakaso seeing one effort deflected wide, while Virgil van Dijk and Anthony Stokes both struck efforts from around 30 yards but missed the target.

That kind of threat would not have alarmed the visitors, but Inverness were seldom able to break upfield with intent, either. They admirably kept trying to build passages of possession carefully and precisely from the back, but with Celtic eager to press high up the pitch, Inverness often failed to move the ball out of their own half.

It was not unusual, for instance, to see an Inverness counter end with the ball being played back to Dean Brill, the visiting goalkeeper. At the other end, Zaluska was making a rare start for the first-team with Craig Gordon nursing a slight injury, and an early moment of panic when he dropped a shot from Graeme Shinnie apart, the Celtic goalkeeper had little cause for concern.

Even when Zaluska was briefly discomfited, when Josh Meekings turned the ball back across goal by hooking it over his shoulder, Jason Denayer was able to head clear on the goal-line. Inverness's most coherent moment came just before the interval, with a crisp passing move that ended with Shinnie sweeping the ball over from the edge of the penalty area.

These were temporary breaks in the general pattern of the game, though, since Celtic were comfortable while they dominated the ball. Reward came early in the second-half, and Inverness were riled by frustration and self-admonishment.

A move by the visitors broke down in midfield, with Ross Draper stopping to claim a foul. Anthony Stokes broke upfield regardless, then fed Guidetti, who made space to shoot before sending Brill the wrong way with a smart finish.

Tempers were briefly inflamed, since Guidetti twice claimed for a penalty moments later, the second after claiming that he had been tripped inside the area. This prompted a furious response from Draper, and both were booked for squaring up to each other.

The single-goal lead was merited for Celtic, but it became increasingly fragile. Having dominated for so long, Celtic allowed slackness to undermine them. That encouraged Inverness enough for the visitors to feel that an equaliser was possible, and there were three times when they felt it was directly within reach.

Carl Tremarco headed over from close range, but could at least claim that he was put off by Van Dijk's defending, as they clashed heads at the same time. Billy McKay, on as a substitute, also had an opportunity from inside the six yard box, but couldn't apply enough strength or purchase on his touch, and the ball drifted wide.

The final intervention came from Zaluska, who punched the ball away as Tremarco and McKay surged towards a knock-down, when a single touch would have been enough to divert the ball in.

Celtic draw Rangers, Aberdeen face Dundee Utd in League Cup

Celtic will meet Rangers in the Scottish League Cup semi-finals with holders Aberdeen meeting Dundee United.

The draw for the last four was made live on BBC One Scotland's Sportscene with United coming out the hat first, followed by the Dons.

The ties at neutral venues will be played on 31 January and 1 February.

Rangers were the first side into the semis by beating St Johnstone on Tuesday, with Aberdeen, Celtic and United winning the following night.

The Dons beat Hamilton 1-0, Celtic thrashed Partick Thistle 6-0 and the Tangerines won 7-6 on penalties after a 3-3 draw with Hibernian.

Scotland's national stadium, Hampden Park, is likely to host both semi-finals.

Aberdeen will need to get past United to reach another League Cup final

Celtic last met Rangers in a 2012 league match, when the former triumphed 3-0. The Ibrox side won their last League Cup meeting – the 2011 final.

Reacting to the draw, Celtic manager Ronny Deila told BBC Scotland: "I haven't been at an Old Firm game before but I am looking forward to experiencing it.

"Of course we are favourites. We are favourites in every game here in Scotland.

"Everybody knows it is unbelievably important in Glasgow. Everyone is looking forward to a fantastic atmosphere. It is two clubs that really want to beat each other.

"You can hear from the dressing room that people are looking forward to it."

Asked if he had wanted to be drawn against the Ibrox side, the Norwegian replied: "Yes, it is no problem for me. There were three good teams there and I think we didn't get the best one."

And Rangers manager Ally McCoist told his club website: "I'm delighted with the draw and judging by the reaction from the boys in the dressing room they're happier than me.

"It's a great draw for us. Everyone has anticipated it and I don't think there's any doubt Celtic will start as favourites. Of course they will.

"It's a smashing game for us though. We feel the boys have come a long way and we're now in a position where we feel we can compete with teams on our day.

"We're not going to get carried away but I think it says a lot about the last couple of years that we're now looking forward to that type of game.

"It can't be a distraction though and it absolutely won't be. It's a League Cup semi-final with Celtic but nothing more.

"Whether anybody likes it or not, it isn't as high on the agenda as getting out of the division (the Scottish Championship) is for us."

Dundee United boss said of his side's meeting with Aberdeen: "It's a good League Cup draw to to look forward to against Aberdeen in the semi-final.

"It's like going back to the old days with the New Firm and the Old Firm. It's great for everybody concerned.

"Aberdeen have a fantastic backing, as do we. People are talking about Tynecastle or Easter Road but it will need a big venue for both sets of supporters.

"We've filled Hampden before, so there's no reason why we can't do it again."

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes told his club website: "Any game at the semi-final stage of a tournament is going to be difficult and both teams will see it as a real opportunity to get to a final.

"Hopefully we'll be in good form in the build-up to the game."
