Trivia
- Champions League 2015-16
- 3rd Qualifying round of the Champions League, Second Leg
- First Round: Celtic 1-0 Qarabag; Agg 1-0,Celtic go through.
- Key game as winner is guaranteed European football in group stages of at least the UEFA Cup if they win.
- Celtic have to go thru three rounds of qualifiers to make group stages of European Cup. This is the second hurdle to conquer for Celtic, skipped the first round qualifiers.
- CelticFC foundation sponsors on Celtic kit likely due to local alcohol sponsorship laws.
- Qarabag is in Azerbaijan. Game kicked off at 5:30pm UK time due to time difference (9:30 local).
- Local match temp: 30C; two waterbreaks in the game (at 30mins & 60mins) to help the players.
- Concerns over the state of the pitch. Recent heatwaves of 40C have meant the grass pitch has been heavily damaged with around 30% of the pitch majorly damaged and unable to be repaired in time for the match (figures from their own pitch management). Qarabag denying various allegations and state the newspapers using old pictures. Pitch obviously hasn't been watered and is below standards that should be demanded and required for this level of competition. A cynic could argue it was done on purpose like this. On the day, it wasn't too bad.
- Ajax, one of the great old ladies of European football, knocked out in this round in the European Cup by Rapid Vienna. Another sign of the difficulty for clubs from small countries competing in the European Cup. The major Spanish, German and English clubs have it easy in comparison.
- Draw on Friday coming.
- Transfers in: Dedryk Boyata (Man City), Saidy Jonka (Man U free) ; Ciftci (Dundee Utd £1.5m)
- Transfers out: Joe Chalmers (to Motherwell) ; Tonev (end loan); Guidetti (end loan); Wakaso (end loan); Zaluska (free); John Herron (free), Amido Balde (free) ; Fridjonsson (free to Reykjavik) ; Adam Matthews (£2m to Sunderland); Paul McMullan (loan to St Mirren), Michael Duffy (Alloa season long loan), Connor McManus (Alloa season long loan) ; Jackson Irvine (to Ross County)

Ronny got the tactics spot on, the difference a year makes is noticeable, the defence was solid, midfield worked extremely hard without over elaborating, a workmanlike shift and one that was needed. The pitch although dry never caused any real problems either.
We are now two games away from the CL, and honestly can't wait for the draw, I hope we are looking at adding to the front line as we are extremely short up top.

All in all we are through to the next round, it wasn't pretty to watch, 😥 😥 , it was actually quite abysmal at times reminded me of a Primary school game
They were a poor side, lacked imagination and creativity, looked at there best in 1st half when they threw a few in the box especially after Lustig was playing on the right wing!!
Pitch was a shocker :nono: really really bad, impossible to play any football on it, the ball seemed to constantly run away from everyone as if playing on a jagged concrete slope everywhere. The pass from Bitton, who was outstanding, at the end to Griffiths that split the defence for him to run in on goal, was nowhere near overhit you could tell with his body shape it was only a 5 yard pass through the defence as they stood square on but the ball travelled 15-20 yards enabling their goalie to punt clear.
Im not sure if it was the heat n humidity that caused this but for me the ball flight was wild, it was like playing with one of those 99p Wembley balls with the blue patches you get on the Seafront at all good British beach resorts.
Defence were solid, panicked a bit in 1st half when ball was in our box but il put that down to being nervous about the pitch as it seemed much worse in that area.
Midfield ran their heart out apart from Bitton he just seemed to glide everywhere :worthy: , upfront toothless but there you go lol
Looking forward to Fridays draw….especially watching the 2 legs in Sunny Lanzarote …….

Our defence and midfield are more than capable of setting up the foundations for CL qualification. Very concerned at the lack of quality shown up front though. GMS will have to up his game in the next round. Just can't see where a goal is coming from Cifti at this level. Looking for so much better from Johansen who has started the season as badly as he did last year. Not faulting his work rate, but his passing and decision making have been well off, particularly when Brown and/or Bitton have showed for a pass and he has gone on a mazy run culminating in him giving up possession. I think that's what led to their free shot at goal in the first half that Gordon made a great save from. Still, overall, a professional job done, but we are crying out for a bit more quality up front, which I know you have to pay serious money for 🙁

Analysis: Feels like Lennon never left Celtic
The Scotsman
ANDREW SMITH
THE alien environment that Celtic were supposed to be pitched into last night had an air of familiarity about it for the armchair viewer. A desperate playing surface, a desperate referee oblivious to agricultural challenges and a desperation to much of the play from both sides. Heck, it could have been a Scottish Premiership encounter.
And BT Sport, and their new European football channel, did their bit to make us feel that the third round Champions League qualifier in Baku recalled certain old times. To be precise, Celtic’s assignments in foreign lands past as the club enjoyed a renaissance in the continental arena in this new millennium.
Sutton, during a stuffy, nip-and-tuck encounter, was good value and certainly enhanced the entertainment with his quiet, assassin-style delivery. “What do you have to do to get a foul with this referee?” he lamented. Strömbergsson’s approach would not have appeared out of place in WWE. “Celtic haven’t had a thing from this referee tonight,” the Englishman despaired later on.
The former striker provided pointers and opinions that were a cut above the truisms that so often pass for punditry. As Celtic defended stoutly in seeking to contain a Qarabag side that they comprehensively snuffed out during their 1-0 win in Glasgow, Virgil van Dijk produced a number of commanding interventions. Sutton couldn’t resist a refreshing spot of editorialising.
He informed viewers that there had been reports of a £7 million bid from Southampton for the Dutchman. “Celtic should look for a lot more than that,” he said, making the comparison with the £20m to £25m fee Chelsea are expected to pay in order to land John Stones from Everton. “He [van Dijk] is as good as John Stones,” Sutton maintained, saying he would “acclimatise” to the greater demands of the English top flight. “He’s got everything,” he went on, warming to his theme, “he reads the game well, is a good passer and he’s got size.” We waited for him saying “he’s got legs”… and then a blast of ZZ Top drowning out the estimable commentator Derek Rae.
With no television yet on the market that replicates – in your own living room – the atmospheric conditions of the sporting occasion being screened, it could not be assessed just how much the 30C heat was affecting the tie.
An encounter that Rae stated, with a smart line he had probably been rehearsing the previous evening no doubt, hadn’t “been pretty, but gritty”.
What the pictures showed, though, was the sandpit nature of a parched surface. Billows of dust were regularly sent swirling into the air as the ball was kicked along the less-than-grassy field. Lennon, as was his wont, in 13 years as a major figure in Scotland, astutely pointed out that the profound difficulties with the pitch were more a problem for the Azerbaijani hosts who sought to pass Celtic into submission without actually producing the probing that was necessitated. “I’ve never seen that,” he said of a home team facing conditions to their detriment.
Qarabag’s limitations as they struggled to make any heading against Ronny Deila’s side in a second period that the Scottish champions saw out comfortably. Yet, that should not take away from the smart, professional performance that Deila drew from his players.
Sutton admitted that as Celtic shipped in goals in Europe last season, he questioned whether Deila could set up his team to defend. He now acknowledges that the Norwegian has the guile to instruct his team into the requirements of the occasion. A first away clean sheet in Europe for eight games was well deserved and an indication that Deila is developing his team for continental competition in an encouraging fashion.
There was huge pressure on the manager and his squad in Baku and they undoubtedly delivered. Only once was Craig Gordon called upon, a brilliant first-half stop, the only time there seemed a real threat to Celtic being able to seal their place in the Champions League play-offs inside 90 minutes.
Last night’s progress ensures that whatever happens in that tie in a fortnight, Celtic will be playing European football until Christmas. Yet, with their seeded status in these play-offs, there is every reason to suspect that they will not need the consolation prize of a place in the Europa League group stages. Sutton’s dulcet tones are likely to be heard on telly above the hum in some intimidating footballing citadels across the later months of 2015. BT Sport should be as happy about that as the Celtic armchair fans.

THE high point of the Ronny Deila era arrived last night in a baking Baku. Do not be fooled by what might seem a prosaic progression to the play-offs of the Champions League for the Norwegian’s Celtic team. Rarely in continental competition can a Scottish side have been so comfortable registering the scoreless draw they sought in foreign surrounds.
Ultimately, a slick if blunt Qarabag could not breach a well-drilled and determined Deila side across 180 minutes. When he was appointed, there was a concern that the Norwegian could sacrifice himself on the altar of his principles in Europe. He declared he was an advocate of expansive football, whatever the circumstances. Yet, in the manner Celtic were willing to sit deep and pass their way through awkward situations across the middle third, it was demonstrated Deila has developed as much as his side in this arena across the past 12 months. The reward for Celtic’s effort last night will be at the least participation in the Europa League group stages, with that competition the consolation prize to the sides defeated in the Champions League play-off.
In general, although it may not sound an awful lot, it was awfully good. Celtic did the simple things well and simplified the difficult things in a performance of maturity and industry. The Parkhead men led from the first leg of the third qualifier through a Dedryck Boyata goal, but did not arrive at the Tofiq Bahramov Stadium with only defence on their mind. In an open first half, the visitors gave as good as they got and amid a dearth of clear-cut chances at either end, Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon make a fine save from Brazilian midfielder Richard Almeida.
The home side enjoyed plenty of possession again after the break but most of it in front of a resolute Celtic defence with the Scotland ’keeper seeing little action as Deila’s side worked all the way to keep their lead intact and indeed, they might have snatched a goal in the closing minutes. The draw for the play-off takes place tomorrow and Norwegian boss Deila, in his second season in charge, should feel that he can get his side into the lucrative group stage this year.
An enthusiastic home crowd of close to 30,000, amid a heavy security presence, waved white Qarabag flags and drowned out the small band of Celtic supporters as the Azerbaijan champions looked to strike the first blow. Despite the 9:30pm kick-off local time, there was enough heat and humidity to test the visitors, and the poor surface, scorched by high temperatures, made it difficult for both teams to get the ball down and play.
Qarabag bossed the early stages but the Celtic defence, marshalled by reported Southampton target Virgil van Dijk, looked compact and protective of ’keeper Gordon. Gradually the Scottish champions began to edge forward and, in fact, play sped from end to end, helped by an often lenient Swedish referee, Martin Strömbergsson.
After earlier causing a moment of panic with a poor punch, Gordon more than made up for that when he flew to his right to parry a powerful 25-yard drive by Almeida and that was as good as it got for Qarabag.
A water break after half an hour gave both sides a chance to regroup before Van Dijk made a clearing tackle in the six-yard box to thwart Dani Quintana.
An optimistic long-range attempt by Nir Bitton just before the break was saved by home ’keeper Ibrahim Sehic and there was enough for Deila to be pleased about at the interval. Celtic did not need to force the play or fragment in the face of pressure, and they never looked like succumbing to either pitfall in that opening period.
There were some anxious moments, though, for the Glasgow side at the start of the second half.
Gordon was more than equal to the lobbed attempt by Alharbi El Jadeyaoui from outside the box. But a sense of diminishing goal threat from Qarabag grew, as did the tension as the match entered the last 30 minutes.
In the 67th minute Leigh Griffiths replaced Nadir Ciftci, who had worked hard enough without really threatening, before Gary Mackay-Steven made way for Kris Commons. In the final stages, and after the second water break, Qarabag kept pressing. But in the 83rd minute Celtic midfielder Stefan Johansen should have scored, instead firing just past the post from 12 yards after being set up by Stuart Armstrong.
Substitute James Forrest, on for Armstrong, then failed to pick out Griffiths on a Celtic break when the right pass would surely have led to a goal. Ultimately, that late profligacy meant little as the Glasgow side held out for a nervy five minutes of added time before celebrating a fine night’s work. Deila has delivered an impressive Champions League qualifier success, and that represents notable progress.

BBC Sport Scotland Celtic progressed to the Champions League play-off round as a goalless draw in Baku allowed them to complete a 1-0 aggregate win over Qarabag.
An excellent save by Craig Gordon denied Qarabag's Richard Almeida midway through the first half.
Stuart Armstrong and Stefan Johansen fired shots wide for the visitors after the break as openings remained scarce.
Ronny Deila's side are now two legs away from the group stage and will discover their opponents on Friday.

Dedryck Boyata's headed goal from the first leg sealed Celtic's seeded place in the draw, while Qarabag dropped into the Europa League play-off round.
There had been concerns about the pitch at the Tofiq Bahramov Stadium following reports the surface had been badly damaged by the heat.
However, Deila had dismissed suggestions that either the pitch or the heat in the Azerbaijan capital would hamper his side's chances.
Celtic, fielding an unchanged starting line-up from last Wednesday, absorbed pressure from the hosts in the opening half-hour but had few direct efforts at goal to deal with.
Gary Nackay-Steven in action for Celtic against Qarabag The second leg proved to be a tense affair with few chances
Gordon flapped at a cross and Rydell Poepon could not take advantage but the goalkeeper was much more convincing when he beat away Richard's effort.
The Brazilian lined up his left-foot shot from 22 yards and curled the ball towards the inside of Gordon's right-hand post only to be left frustrated by the Scotland international's stretching save.
In attack, the visitors were restricted to breakaways and rarely got into dangerous areas.
Nir Bitton attempted to catch Ibrahim Sehic out with an audacious shot from near the centre circle, the keeper clutching after a momentary panic.
Alharbi El Jadeyaoui tried a chip of his own early in the second half but Gordon comfortably caught the 20-yard shot.
Though Qarabag's attacking continued to stutter, Celtic became less and less able to mount meaningful advances and their passing often let them down.
However, Armstrong sought to break the malaise with a shot from the left that had power but lacked accuracy.
As the game entered its closing stages, Johansen had only Sehic to beat as he latched on to an Armstrong pass but could not hit the target.
James Forrest injected fresh pace as a replacement for Armstrong and his forceful, driving run took him clear of the Qarabag defence, but he elected to pass instead of shoot and the hosts scrambled clear.
After five minutes of stoppage time, the Celtic players were celebrating and will now contemplate the challenge of overcoming their final hurdle to the Champions League group stage.
