Trivia

  • Aberdeen draw again on the Saturday, so Celtic spared.
  • Tom English (BBC): "Celtic will surely win the league but what massive regrets Aberdeen are going to have. Title is/was there for the winning"
  • Friday night game
  • James Forrest has knocked back a new four-year deal at Celtic. Hoops boss Ronny Deila today revealed that the 24-year-old has told the club he wishes to seek out other options as he sees out the remaining year of his contract.
  • Gary Harkins of Dundee ribbed TheRangers by correctly stating that the side Dundee may face in the Scottish Cup quarter-finals is not the same as the Rangers he faced pre-2012. He said: “They’re just a new club. I’ve not played them before, so I’m looking forward to that. It should be good.” Completely correct, and he was forced off Twitter due to abuse from Huns.
  • Celtic fined £10k by UEFA for fans setting off flares at the Fenerbahce match in Dec, and also for 5 yellow cards. Could have been far worse.
  • Ref Willie Collum has been demoted to Championship duty for another two rounds of matches after more high-profile blunders. School teacher Collum was slammed for his performance in ICT’s 3-1 win over Aberdeen, awarding a spot kick to ICT while appearing to miss two at the other end. Some Celtic fans fume that he has been even worse against us.
  • Champions League: Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu is keen for elite clubs to qualify for the premier European competition – regardless of their domestic success. Rest of us say get lost!
  • Celtic to play Morton on a Sunday at 12pm in the Scottish Cup quarters. What a joke!
  • Former OldCo Rangers player Paul Gascoigne is not the brightest and in fairness has well publicised mental related issues. Get’s caught up in a storm following a one man show in which he sang along with the hun-fest tunes with plenty enough sectarian add-ons
  • Sevco manager Mark Warburton has expressed irritation and amazement at Ronny Deila’s view of artificial pitches, branding his Celtic counterpart “disrespectful” and stating he would be “absolutely staggered” if the Scottish champions installed such a surface at Parkhead. An ongoing debate and controversy over synthetic pitches in Scottish football took a fresh twist this week when Deila labelled their critics as “very old fashioned” and revealed he would not object to one being laid down at Celtic Park. Warburton has become quite a rent-a-gob for tabloids looking for quotes, and he’s just boring!
  • Kilmarnock striker Josh Magennis has claimed he was racially abused by a fan at Tynecastle. The 25-year-old Northern Ireland international is alleged to have been abused by a fan in the Wheatfield Stand after his side’s 1-0 defeat in Edinburgh.A statement from Hearts read: “The alleged abusive remark related to the player being Irish. To clarify, this allegation does not involve the player’s colour, religion or sexuality.” So apparently that makes it fine?
  • UEFA fine Celtic £10,000 over conduct of team & supporters during Europa League game at Fenerbahce. An ignominious end to a dreadful Europa League campaign.

ReviewHamilton 1 Celtic 1

Once again a Ronnie team can’t handle any adversity, time for change at the top. No fight, no passion, just acceptance of mediocrity.

(Etims on Twitter)
FT 1-1. Poor first half. Boyata shouldn't have been red carded. Pen saved to go to 2-0. Lost another soft goal from corner. Rubbish again.

(inside the SPFL on Twitter)
Once again Celtic when faced with adversity show they can't overcome it, its OK winning when everything is smooth but they're mentally weak.

(jim62 of KDS)
Can understand why Thomson gave the red ( from his angle and only one split second look at it) but it's just wrong….and I'll ignore the fact that the Hamilton player was offside

Can't understand how McKinnon lasted 90 minutes …his tackle on Tierney is a straight red all day

Griffiths is a terrible penalty taker (and yes I do realise he scored one)

The manager has to go…the sooner the better….we could end up trophyless this season

Craigan is an absolute bitter carrot
(old Greennose of KDS)
As far as I could see, RD did not run on the pitch and red card Boyota, nor did he grab the ball from LG and proceed to miss the penalty himself.

He brought on a defender when one got sent off. But that makes him a pumpkin to many on here.

He brought on Christie, for whom many people had been clamouring, and took off GMS, who was not having one of his better nights. But this also makes him a pumpkin to many on here.

He played Allan from the start, something for which, again, there has been a clamour recently. But that's not good enough for some on here.

If you think the manager's a pumpkin when he DOESN'T do what you want…no matter the outcome.

If you think the manager's a pumpkin when he DOES do what you want…no matter the outcome.

If you think the manager's a pumpkin when the ref cheats…

If you think the manager's a pumpkin when a penalty is saved…

I have news for you.

There IS a pumpkin involved, but it's not RD. It's YOU.

Hamilton 1 – 1 Celtic: Brophy rescues precious point for Accies
http://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/teams/celtic/hamilton-1-1-celtic-brophy-rescues-precious-point-for-accies-1-4038951
STEPHEN HALLIDAY

CELTIC’S efforts to build up sustained momentum in pursuit of a fifth consecutive title stalled on a night when Hamilton Accies atoned for the 8-1 drubbing inflicted upon them by the Scottish champions five weeks earlier.

Leigh Griffiths scored his 33rd goal of the season to put Celtic in front with a penalty but, after the highly contentious dismissal of defender Dedryck Boyata just before half-time, the striker was unable to convert a second spot-kick after the break.

Hamilton substitute Eamonn Brophy, who netted their consolation in the Celtic Park defeat, scored a far more meaningful goal this time as he rescued a precious point for his team in their bid for top-flight survival.

The result leaves Ronny Deila’s side seven points clear at the top of the table, having played a game more than challengers Aberdeen who face St Johnstone at Pittodrie today.

Accies manager Martin Canning could hardly be chastised for adopting a policy of containment in the early stages, given the humiliation he and his players suffered last month.

Yet, it was Accies who had the two clearest sightings of goal in the opening half hour.

The first effort on target came in the 15th minute when Mikey Devlin met Ali Crawford’s free-kick but could only send his header straight into the arms of Logan Bailly.

The Belgian goalkeeper, making only his fourth Celtic appearance as Craig Gordon was relegated to the bench because of concerns over a slight knee injury, should have been beaten two minutes later.

An error by Celtic captain Scott Brown allowed Carlton Morris to send Crawford racing clear on goal but the Accies midfielder’ lifted his shot over the top with the goal at his mercy.

The miss was fully punished when Celtic opened the scoring with a spot-kick which constituted their own first attempt on target. Scott Allan, finally making his first domestic start for Celtic after 14 substitute appearances, held the ball up well in the area and laid it off to Griffiths.

But quite why Dougie Imrie decided to challenge Griffiths from behind, when the striker was facing away from goal, even he will struggle to explain. It was an easy decision for the referee and Griffiths smashed the penalty low down the middle while Accies keeper Michael McGovern dived to his left.

The goal drew Accies out of their defensive shell and they threatened an equaliser two minutes later, Bailly having to move smartly off his line to block a close-range effort by Gramoz Kurtaj.

Before Celtic could settle on their lead, they were reduced to ten men by Boyata’s questionable dismissal.

There was grievance on two counts for Celtic as Morris appeared to start his run from an offside position before getting in front of Boyata who then got a touch on the ball as he slid in on the striker on the edge of the penalty area.

Deila responded by withdrawing attacking midfielder Kris Commons, replacing him with Charlie Mulgrew who joined Erik Sviatchenko in central defence.

While Hamilton saw much more of the ball from that point, Celtic should have doubled their advantage five minutes into the second half. Gary Mackay-Steven found himself with only McGovern to beat but shot tamely straight at the keeper. Then, Griffiths could not convert another penalty conceded in brainless fashion by Ziggy Gordon who blatantly hauled down Mikael Lustig in the box.

Griffiths struck the ball to McGovern’s left this time and the Northern Ireland international made a fine save.

Hamilton made the most of that reprieve as Brophy drew them level in the 73rd minute. The substitute had only been on the pitch for three minutes when he pounced on Celtic’s failure to clear a Crawford corner and thundered a right-foot shot high into the net from the edge of the penalty area.

Five things we learned from Hamilton Accies 1 – 1 Celtic
http://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/competitions/premiership/five-things-we-learned-from-hamilton-accies-1-1-celtic-1-4038977
CRAIG FOWLER

Craig Fowler reflects on a frustrating night for Ronny Deila and the Ladbrokes Premiership leaders.

Celtic’s defence lacks organisation

There was already a warning regarding the communication, or lack thereof, of Celtic’s relatively new defensive pairing prior to Dedryck Boyata’s red card. Other than Leigh Griffiths’ penalty, the best chance in the first half came the way of Ali Crawford when he received a pass from Carlton Morris inside the area. In the build-up, both Boyata and Erik Sviatchenko had their focus solely on Morris. Only after it was too late did Boyata realise the situation and instruct Sviatchenko to ignore Morris and follow Crawford’s run. They got away with it when Crawford missed a great chance.

At the sending off, when Sviatchenko stepped out with the ball, Boyata should have drifted inside sooner to protect the centre of the pitch. Failing that, Stefan Johansen should have stayed deep until after Sviatchenko’s pass was attempted, instead of moving forward to give the centre back another option. Even then, Scott Brown could have been quicker in reading the danger and dropping back to cover. What it left was a great big hole for Morris to run into.

Dedryck Boyata makes his own bad luck

The BT Sport pundits couldn’t agree on the red card and neither could Celtic. The players thought it was the wrong decision, at least on the park they did, but Deila reckons his defender didn’t get enough of the ball. Regardless, it’s a situation that Boyata didn’t have to get himself into. He’s got a decent amount of pace, certainly enough to keep stride with Morris. The striker was not at the centre of the penalty area. He was charging in on the right. All Boyata has to do is stay with him, side-by-side and challenge his opponent to arrow the ball either into the roof of the net at the near post or drill it with pin-point accuracy into the far corner. Having netted only four goals all season, it was unlikely Morris was going to do either. It may be a lot for a defender to process in such a short space of time, but that’s what separates the best from the rest.

Scott Brown is severely lacking in match sharpness

We’ve yet to see even a glimpse of peak Brown since the Celtic captain returned to the starting XI after his lengthy injury. Some may be wondering – in fact, some definitely are wondering – whether he’s got enough left in the tank to be a talisman for Celtic over the next few seasons, or if the injuries have taken their toll. However, while that is a question that will need to be answered at some stage, his issues against Hamilton were more mental than physical. He just lacked concentration throughout the match: miscontrolling simple balls, making wayward passes and being off in his positioning. That’s unusual for Brown, very unusual, and it may just be a case of him struggling to adapt mid-season after such a sustained period on the sidelines.

There’s more than enough talent in Carlton Morris

The next step for the Hamilton Accies striker is to get some consistency to his game, which he’s been doing recently with a few strong showings. Then after that he needs to turn himself into a regular goal threat. Because in terms of ability and physique, he has the tools to succeed. Maybe not at parent club Norwich City, where he’ll be going against some of the best defenders in the world, but certainly at the SPFL level. Against Celtic he used his broad frame and technique on the football to continually hold up the ball up, enabling his team-mates to get up the park and give their much fancied visitors as good as they got.

Getting destroyed 8-1 was oddly good for Hamilton

Sometimes complete annihilation indicates that a manager is out of his depth and heralds the beginning of the end. Onlookers couldn’t believe it when Aberdeen gave Mark McGhee two more matches to turn things around after his side were similarly hammered 9-0 at Celtic Park. They saw it as conclusive proof he wasn’t the right man for the job. They were right in some respects (McGhee wasn’t the right man) but football is a very strange game, and Hamilton’s case is a perfect example of an act of sheer embarrassment being a very odd blessing in disguise. Since 8-1, they’ve played five matches, conceding only three goals and losing once. There’s now an organisation and togetherness in defence that hasn’t been there since the opening months of the campaign. Even when it was 11v11 they limited Celtic, with no clear cut opportunities from open play being created by the champions in the first half.

Eamonn Brophy

Highlights: Hamilton 1-1 Celtic

A goal from substitute Eamonn Brophy 17 minutes from the end earned Hamilton a point against 10-man Celtic.

A needless foul from Dougie Imrie on Leigh Griffiths brought Celtic a penalty, and the striker stepped up to slot home his 33rd goal of the season.

Dedryck Boyata was sent off for a last-man tackle on Accies' Carlton Morris five minutes before the break.

Michael McGovern saved a second Griffiths spot-kick, and Brophy's powerful strike rescued Accies a point.

They move above Motherwell into ninth in the Premiership table, two points above the relegation play-off place currently occupied by Kilmarnock.

Celtic extend their cushion at the top of the table to seven points, but Aberdeen can take advantage of the champions' slip-up by closing the gap back to four points when they host St Johnstone on Saturday.
Leigh Griffiths
Leigh Griffiths took his goals tally for this season to 33.

Hamilton were a world away from January's humiliating 8-1 thrashing at the hands of the same opponents, and very nearly took the lead through Ali Crawford.

Scott Brown lost out to Morris who put in Crawford though on goal, but he shot over the bar when he really should have scored.

Accies had settled into the game after an dominant opening period from the visitors, but fell behind due to a moment of madness from Imrie.

Griffiths was in possession but in an unthreatening position and only Imrie will know why he sent the Celtic striker crashing just inside the area.

The striker took the penalty himself and fired the ball right down the middle.

It was a crazy moment from Imrie, a point Mikey Devlin was presumably making as he squared up to his team-mate in the wake of incident.
Dedrick Boyata
Dedrick Boyata was sent off for a last-man foul on Carlton Morris

But suddenly the game was alight.

Boyata was sent off for a tackle on Morris. He tried to play the Accies striker offside but mistimed his movement and the forward was in on goal.

The lunging challenge ended a clear goalscoring opportunity just outside the box, but the Celtic bench – and their support in a crowd of 5,017 – clearly felt the tackle was legitimate and the defender had touched enough of the ball.

Manager Ronny Delia immediately reshaped his 10 men, replacing the returning Kris Commons with Charlie Mulgrew.

The flames continued to burn in the second half. Gary Mackay-Steven was through one-on-one with McGovern but could not finish, and Griffiths saw a clever effort fly just past the post.
Leigh Griffiths
Griffiths saw his second penalty saved by Michael McGovern

Then came another moment of controversy and another penalty. Ziggy Gordon was spotted wrestling with Mikael Lustig at a corner and referee Craig Thomson pointed to the spot.

Again Griffiths stepped up, but this time McGovern produced a fine, diving save to keep the outcome in the balance.

It was a costly miss because minutes later home boss Martin Canning introduced Brophy – criticised by some after celebrating his goal in the recent thumping at Parkhead – and the substitute had the desired effect.

Celtic failed to deal with a corner and when the ball dropped in the box to Brophy he smashed a finish high into the net to ensure honours were even at the end of a pulsating match.
