Trivia
- League Cup, Betfred Cup, 2nd round
- Celtic got to miss the first round/group stages due to being in Europe. New format for the season, final this time reverts to first half of the season as it did long time back.
- First competitive domestic game for Brendan Rodgers at Celtic Park.
- Celtic won in the league last Sunday, so joint top after one game.
- Brendan Rodgers’ first domestic cup game!
- Rogic & Sinclair the real stars here, and a great first goal.
- An incredible number of shots on target, 26 shots, 16 on target.
- Celtic finished that game tonight with 6 academy youth players. Just in case Heart’s manager Robbie Neilson was watching who made a poor remark aimed at Celtic for raising players in the game. Celtic buy players, Hearts develop players according to Robbie Neilson.
- Police have begun an investigation into finding the supporter who swung at Sinclair on Sunday past.
- Olympics has started, it’s in Rio de J, Brazil. Will be a big party, but overshadowed by a collapsing economy, a lot of domestic unrest and the spread of the cruel & deadly zika virus. Main stories include: US swimming sensation Phelps continuing to amaze and now has over 20 gold medals; UK had a slow start to medals so far but one swimmer is breaking records (Adam Peaty gold medal) but things picked up; Japan beat NZ in men’s rugby 7’s; Murray still in for the tennis gold; Irish boxer punted out for drug test failure; Olympic pool water is apparently turning green from blue, but this time green isn’t a good sign (due to mismanagement as algae blooms in the heat)!
- Transfers:
- Scott Sinclair signed for Celtic last Saturday, and scored on his debut last Sunday.
- Rodgers looking at getting a new goalkeeper in? No real back-up for Gordon as Logan Bailly is out injured.
- Tom Rogic signs new 3 year deal, good news.
- Forrest renews contract with Celtic, 3 years. Impressed the new manager.
- Darnell Fisher to move to Rotherham? Was at St Johnstone last season on loan.- Update, he moved to Rotherham, all the best to him.
Review
(fatboab of KDS)
The Rodgers Revolution continues apace. For only the second time in years, I was in the Pensioners Stand, and got a different perspective than my usual "best seat in the house". Being that bit closer, and almost directly behind BR, it was refreshing and hugely encouraging to watch him give out instructions throughout the match. The smallest detail is corrected, and the players seem to get it.
The performance was terrific, with successes all over the park. The only poor performances came from Izzy, who looks well pout of sorts, and Craig Gordon, whose distribution left BR fuming at times.
Those aside , this was a sparkiling performance at times, with Forrest, Sinclair, Rogic and Dembele causing Motherwell all sorts of problems. Pace is the king in the modern game, and we now have plenty of it up front. Sinclair has superb close control and an astonishing burst of pace, Dembele is one serious "unit" and he has a great first touch and is as strong as an ox. This partnership will blossom into something special in the weeks and months ahead. Forrest was in scintillating form, and looked like a new man. If he can keep that up, then we have ourselves a player.
Rogic is capable of being a great player. His touch and vision are amazing, and if he can add a bit pace and lift his head quicker, he'll be hard to shift from the first eleven.
Janko is getting fitter, faster, stronger with every passing game, while Lustig really suits being a centre back, and O'C onnell had another safe game.
McGregor pressed all over the pitch, and Brown was more like himself.
It's a long time since everyone leaving the ground was full of enthusiasm and praise, but last night I didn't hear a dissenting voice all the way home.
The only person who might not have enjoyed last night is Leigh Griffiths. The worries over what we'd do if he was injured are in the past, and the future might see Griffiths struggle for game time. What a change in a few weeks.
I'm hugely encouraged, and if we can take some of this into next week's crucial CL game, we might be very happy.
Early days I know, but the Rodgers Revolution is looking pretty pretty good.

It's amazing to see the difference a new manager and a few weeks can make. Aside from Dembele and Sinclair that was basically the same team from last season that looked so gutless time and time again.
It's early days yet, not getting carried away, but that was as enjoyable a game as I can remember in a good few seasons. Quietly optimistic.
We used to take performances like that for granted when MON was here. Really hoping we see a lot more of it this season.

Tom Rogic volleys home Celtic's opening goal
Tom Rogic volleys home Celtic's opening goal in a fine all-round performance
Celtic thundered into the League Cup quarter-finals with a five-goal pummelling of beleaguered Motherwell.
Tom Rogic scored two, the first a thumping volley. So did Moussa Dembele – one from the penalty spot.
Scott Sinclair got his second goal on his first start for his new club. This was Celtic at their ruthless best.
For Motherwell boss Mark McGhee, the only blessing was the scoreline wasn't even uglier. Only keeper Craig Samson's excellence prevented double figures.
They conceded seven the last time they visited Celtic Park in May. Their survivors from that team would have had flashbacks.
Celtic were inspired, principally, by the wonderful Sinclair and Rogic. Those two were relentless all night and rendered redundant Leigh Griffiths' absence through suspension.
Sinclair was a dervish and Rogic a classy menace. The pair of them were nightmarish handfuls for Motherwell. The Australian played in behind Dembele and the whole thing clicked from the get-go. James Forrest had his moments up there as well.
Motherwell played five at the back, but they might have played 15 back there and it wouldn't have made much difference.
They were behind after 20 minutes. Sinclair had already gone close, but when Callum McGregor dinked a chip over the Motherwell defence and into Rogic, you knew what was coming next.
Rogic had time and space to take it down, turn and rifle his shot past Samson.
Celtic kicked on from there. Sinclair sparked a counter-attack, Rogic had a shot saved by Samson, then Dembele smacked the rebound off the crossbar before Rogic followed up to force another save from Samson.
The Motherwell goalkeeper was outstanding but was helpless when Dembele doubled the lead from the spot after Sinclair was taken down in the box by Richard Tait.
Scott Sinclair celebrates his second goal for Celtic
Sinclair curled in a superb goal on his first start, after grabbing the winner as a substitute against Hearts
Samson was at it again soon after, making another double save from Sinclair and Rogic.
Sinclair should have scored early in the second half. So, too, Dembele, who curled a shot over after terrific build-up play by Rogic and Sinclair.
There were only occasional signs of a threat from Motherwell, quickly snuffed out by another torrent of Celtic goals.
Sinclair cut inside from the left and pinged his shot into Samson's top corner for the third, then Dembele got his second from close-range with the help of a slight deflection.
Rogic wrapped it up after Forrest drove in from the left and fired at Samson, who could only parry it into the Australian's path.
In the closing stages, Brendan Rodgers brought on some of his youth to add more feel-good for the home fans – 17-year-old Anthony Ralston and 19-year-old Jamie McCart entering what was long since a rout.
Post-match reaction:
Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers: "In the first half some of our attacking game at speed was excellent and in the second half we counter-pressed very well, which allowed us to create more chances.
"All round from the first minute to the end it was fantastic. The level of performance at this stage of the season was very good.
"Scott Sinclair will make other players better. We are very fortunate to have him. He is a Premier League player down south. He is so fast and dynamic, and gets you off your feet. He had a wonderful first game here."
Motherwell boss Mark McGhee: "We were totally outclassed. Celtic were flying, [Tom] Rogic and their wide players were brilliant at times, but we weren't as good as we can be.
"There was a lot of energy expended just chasing them and whenever we did win the ball back, we weren't able to keep it for long because we were fatigued.
"We have to move on quickly. St Johnstone on Saturday will be a difficult game but it will be different from tonight."

Have your say
AS a box-ticking exercise, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers could have filled a page of foolscap with the pluses from his team’s tossing aside of Motherwell to make their way into the quarter-finals of the Betfred League Cup.
Craig Samson made two or three excellent stops that prevented the visitors suffering as heavy a pasting they did on losing 7-0 at the ground on the final day of last season – on at least three different occasions. Much of Celtic’s irresistible pace and penetration was provided by Scott Sinclair, who looks like he could wreak untold havoc against Scottish defences. A solitary strike was modest reward for his efforts.

The new signing was abetted by goalscorer Tom Rogic and James Forrest, the winger following the Australian and signing a contract extension yesterday afternoon. Celtic’s fluency in the final third meant there were times that Samson was blocking shots in rapid-fire fashion as if being rained on in the training ground.
Motherwell had glimpses of goal sporadically, and will curse Ben Heneghan directing a header wide of goal when it seemed easier to score only minutes after the restart. Mark McGhee’s men also induced a goalmouth scramble in the opening period but, really, on the balance of goal sightings, the 4-0 scoreline spared the Lanarkshire side.
There must be something about inking a new deal with the Scottish champions. Sinclair celebrated doing so in completing a £3.5m move from Aston Villa at the weekend by coming off the bench and netting the winner against Hearts. Last night, it only took Rogic 19 minutes to mark a new chapter in his Celtic career in notable fashion; the attacker having committed his long-term future to the club on Tuesday.
A delightful lofted ball from Callum McGregor picked him out in oceans of space and Rogic did the rest by flicking the ball up and the ramming in into the roof of the net on the turn. He doubled up his tally for the evening with his team’s fifth that followed a Forrest drive being palmed out by the Motherwell keeper to allow him to tap in.
Moussa Dembele made it 2-0 from the penalty spot little after half an hour with the short run, rifled high style that brought him the tie clincher in the last week’s Champions League qualifier against Astana. For those who like their penalty controversies – and my, oh my has Jamie Walker’s dive dominated the debate – there was no protests when Sinclair hit the deck following a push by Richard Tait. The Frenchman claimed a second goal when a spot of bagatelle ended with a strike from him beating Samson courtesy of a wicked deflection.
That was Celtic’s fourth, which came only two minutes after a 61st minute strike that brought greatest acclaim from the home punters. In no small part that was because it was long overdue after Sinclair’s teasing and tormenting across the evening. The 27-year-old showed great poise and balance to cut inside from the left and curl an inch-perfect effort high in at the far post.
With his side cruising, Rodgers could spread the love among his squad. He gave a senior debut to centre-back Jamie McCart, son of Celtic head of youth Chris, and also brought on Anthony Ralston for a first competitive outing at Celtic Park. By the close of proceedings, there were six Celtic academy players on the pitch. If you didn’t know better, you might think a point was being made to Tynecastle manager Robbie Nielson for his Celtic-buy, Hearts-develop comment.
