Trivia

  • Celtic on top and have a game in hand. Wonderful.
  • Next match is v TheRangers.
  • Stefan Johansen sold to Fulham for est £1.8m. Good luck to him.
  • De Vries debut as Gordon is dropped. No surprise he's been poor lately and needs a break.
  • Celtic made it thru to the Champs Lge this week after a very nervy match away in Israel.
  • Group for Celtic: Barca (again!), Borussia M & Man City. Whatever group we get it would be a group of death.
  • Transfer window ends next week, expecting movement due to money from Champs Lge etc.
  • Young Celtic fan Kieran McDade died this week, and after scoring Griffiths paid tribute to the boy. RIP
  • School grafittied with racist material "The famine's over why don't you go home" (on St Aloysius in Glasgow). Makes the news across the country.
  • Celtic fans have raised over £150k for charity in a #MatchthefineforPaelestine. In anticipation of a fine from UEFA for flag waving in support for Palestine, the Green Brigade held a fund raiser with funds to go to Palestinian charities. Wonderful.
  • Graham Speirs on Sevco fans from their 1-1 match v Killie: "What an outpouring of bigoted chanting from Rangers fans at Rugby Park last night – angry, festering, almost medieval. A pitiful scene."
  • Internationals next week so a wee break.

Great result on a somehow struggling day (except from the first 20 minutes, which was great).

Not the clearest penalty I´ve seen, but not going to complain about it. Aberdeen must have felt the sending off was a bit harsh.

Celtic struggled last season when teams had the guts to put on the pressure high up on the pitch. Second half showed that this hasn´t changed much as you might lack a bit of class in the central midfield. The B´s not having their best matches today, but Brown better than Bitton.

Rogic best player by a mile first half, but not very consistent in the second.

Roberts looked pretty much back to normal. Not everything comes off, but can also be a full attack all by himself.

Forrest showed that he trives a lot more when Celtic keeps possession and he doesn´t need to defend. Thought he did alright today. Great goal.

If Dembele only had a great first touch.

How many matches has Griffiths NOT scored in this season (pre-season included)? The man is a goal machine.

Can´t complain much about a player scoring 3 in 3 league matches, but Sinclair still a bit wasteful in front of goal (tbh, he´s missed quite a few sitters since he joined). Shows class occasionally.

Tierney getting down to the line and serving 45 degrees passes into the box has been one of Celtics most effective weapons this season, but hasn´t seen much of it last couple of matches. A little dip in form?

Sviatchenko a bit shaky in the beginning of the match, but had a good second half.

Toure had a good match, but has to take some blame for their goal (or?). Is he slightly overweight?

Lustig consistently average as per usual, but still the best right back that you´ve got. Lazy defending on their goal.

A bit of a nervous debut for De Vries, but I guess (hope) he´ll show why Rodgers hired him in the matches to come.

100 days and 10 games into the Rodgers regime and every aim set out has been achieved.

4 comfortable wins out of 4 at home against our top 4 challengers from last season.

3 CL qualifying ties negotiated travelling 20,000 miles while having to fulfil ICC commitments.

17 transfers in and out making the squad far stronger at near zero net spend and wage increase.

Press pack put in their cage when needed.

A rocking stadium becoming standard.

Any quibbles can be filed in the bin as far as I am concerned.

Celtic 4 – 1 Aberdeen: Champions leapfrog Rangers at the top

Celtic rounded up a fine week sitting top of the Ladbrokes Premiership with a convincing 4-1 win over Aberdeen at Parkhead.
Striker Leigh Griffiths opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a storming 20-yard shot before Adam Rooney levelled in the 33rd minute in a rare Dons attack.
Midfielder James Forrest, however, restored Celtic’s lead in the 42nd minute and with three minutes remaining Scott Sinclair grabbed the third with a penalty with Dons defender Mark Reynolds sent off for picking up a second yellow card after bringing him down, before midfielder Tom Rogic added the last-gasp fourth.
Brendan Rodgers’ side went into the game on a high after qualifying for the Champions League for the first time in three years with a 5-4 aggregate win over Hapoel Beer-Sheva on Tuesday night before drawing Barcelona, Manchester City and Borussia Monchengladbach in their section.
After the international break, Celtic will host Rangers for the first time in four years – they leapfrogged the Ibrox men at the top by a point and with a game in hand – before travelling to the Nou Camp for the first of their Group C games.
These are exciting times at Celtic Park.
Rodgers dropped goalkeeper Craig Gordon and gave a debut to 35-year-old Dorus de Vries who recently signed a two-year deal from Nottingham Forest, having worked with the Celtic manager at Swansea.
Defender Erik Sviatchenko and midfielder Rogic came in to the starting line-up at the expense of Saidy Janko and Callum McGregor. Defender Ash Taylor and striker Wes Burns returned to the Dons side with Miles Storey on the bench and Peter Pawlett out with a groin strain.
Following an early attempt by Burns which flew high and wide, Celtic took control, showing no signs of fatigue from the midweek trip to Israel.
In the 11th minute Rogic crashed a left-footed drive off the crossbar with Anthony O’Connor’s mis-kicked clearance from the rebound gratefully gathered by Joe Lewis.
However, the Dons goalkeeper was not so lucky two minutes later when Griffiths slipped the ball through the legs of Pittodrie midfielder Kenny McLean before unleashing a vicious left-footed drive from 25 yards which flew in off the post.
The Scotland striker then ran the length the park to hold up a t-shirt with ‘RIP Kieran’ on it, in tribute to teenage Celtic fan Kieran McDade who died while training with his local team in Coatbridge last week.
The home side grew in confidence and Forrest missed the target from a Sinclair cut-back when it looked a certain goal.
In a rare attack the visitors levelled.
Former Celt Niall McGinn slipped past right-back Mikael Lustig near the by-line and when his cross was cut out by defender Kolo Toure, Rooney reacted quickly to turn and curl the ball into the far corner past De Vries.
The goal surprised the home side but three minutes from the break Rogic picked out Forrest inside the box and the Scotland international, with the outside of his right foot, sent the ball hurtling past Lewis.
With the last kick of the half Griffiths came close with a low drive and eight minutes after the break Sinclair’s goal-bound drive was deflected by Taylor for a corner which was desperately scrambled clear.
Celtic finished strongly and in the 87th minute Reynolds, booked minutes earlier for a foul on Rogic, bundled Sinclair to the ground as he went through on goal with referee Bobby Madden sending him packing.
The Celtic winger drove in the penalty before Rogic put the icing on the cake with a goal from a 20-yard free-kick in the 90th minute.

Celtic's James Forrest and Mikael Lustig celebrate
James Forrest put Celtic into a 2-1 lead

Celtic moved to the top of the Scottish Premiership with a comprehensive victory over last season's runners-up, Aberdeen.

The champions' early domination led to Leigh Griffiths' driven opener.

Ruthless finishing from Adam Rooney exposed defensive frailty to give the Dons a surprise equaliser.

James Forrest's clever finish and Scott Sinclair's penalty – after the sending off of Mark Reynolds – secured the win before Tom Rogic curled in a fourth.

The victory in Brendan Rodgers' first home league game as Celtic manager takes his side a point ahead of city rivals Rangers with a game in hand.
Dorus day

Dorus de Vries, who played for Rodgers at Swansea City before being brought to Celtic by the new manager, came into the team for Craig Gordon.

Rodgers' rationale, from what we can decipher, was that he likes his team to build from the back and that the Dutchman is a better distributor than the Scotland keeper.

There was little evidence that De Vries is any better in that department. Shortly before half-time, he gifted a ball to Kenny McLean and had to be bailed out by Kolo Toure.

His use of the ball wasn't convincing. Gordon could understandably look at his successor's performance and wonder why he had been dropped.

The beauty of this Celtic team, though, is in their huge firepower. Even when tired, as they were at times following their midweek Champions League qualifying success, they still won in a canter.

Rogic, a huge Celtic asset, had smashed one off the Aberdeen crossbar early on, but when the goals started going in, they were delicious.

Griffiths' nutmeg on McLean and his subsequent thumping finish was glorious. Then, utterly against the run of play, Rooney curled in a fine equaliser after Toure's clearance fell to the Aberdeen striker.

Forrest's goal, after 42 minutes, was clinical too. Rogic played him through and the winger put it away with the outside of his right foot. The revitalised Forrest has scored three goals this season – one more than all of last season.
Who can silence Celtic's attack?

Aberdeen's record at Celtic Park is lamentable. Coming here, they had 22 consecutive losses in the league in 12 years and 62 goals conceded in that time.

They huffed and puffed in the second half, but their accuracy was nowhere good enough. And they paid for it.

Those awful statistics at the home of the champions got significantly worse late on when Reynolds, already on a yellow, bundled over Sinclair in the box. Reynolds got a red, Sinclair took the penalty – and scored.

A fourth came when Rogic thundered home a free-kick – another thumping strike from a man who has a kick like a mule.

Only four games into this league campaign and you have to wonder who in the Premiership has the capacity to silence this relentless Celtic attack. Their nearest challengers from the last two seasons were routed.

Celtic goal tribute to schoolboy player Kieran McDade

Celtic players and fans have paid tribute to a 13-year-old boy who died after collapsing during a football training session.

Striker Leigh Griffiths held up a shirt with RIP Kieran and the number 13 on it after scoring against Aberdeen.

The goal came in the 13th minute of the game as supporters prepared to stage a minute's applause for Kieran McDade.

Celtic fan Kieran collapsed while on the pitch at Dunbeth Football Club in Coatbridge on 18 August.

The club had earlier confirmed on Facebook that the teenager died in hospital on Friday morning.

It is now raising funds to help Kieran's family through a JustGiving page.

His sister, Amy, said that Kieran had donated some of his organs, which had already saved the lives of two other people.

She wrote: "My family would like to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for the overwhelming prayers and support you have given us.

"Our beautiful boy is now with the angels and will forever live on in our hearts.

"Would also like to let everyone know that Kieran has remained the most sensitive and generous boy that he is and donated some of his organs which has saved two peoples lives today. What a brave soldier, he will be truly missed."
