Trivia
- Champions League 2018-19
- Second leg of two, Second Qualifying Round
- Celtic won first leg 3-1
- Celtic need to navigate 4 rounds
- Winner goes thru to play AEK Athens in next round
- Celtic still to play a domestic game Simunovic bizarrely was given a 2 match ban following his recent red card, only deserves a 1 match ban. Celtic decided against appealing Jozo Simunovic’s red card ban after fearing an unsuccessful bid would see the centre-back’s punishment extended. Simunovic was given an additional one game ban following his straight red card against Alashkert.
- Gamboa a star at right-back!
- Celtic drawn v Partick Thistle next month in round of 16 of League Cup.
- There are calls for an independent review of policing at football following the repeal of a controversial law aimed at tackling sectarian behaviour at matches. Four months on from the scrapping of the law, Scottish Labour said there have been several situations where the police response has been “heavy-handed” at games.
- Celtic have retaliated to Sevco’s recent cull and stated they will only give 800 allocation to Sevco supporters for matches between the two. Will dilute the atmosphere.
- Rugby: Celtic Park will host the Rugby Union pro 14 final in 2019 (i.e. 'Celtic' countries + Italy league grand final). The date is rather significant as well (25/05). It's end of season and same day as the Scottish Cup Final so no pitch worries but if Celtic are playing on the same day it could be interesting. First time outwith of traditional Rugby Union ground.
Transfers:
- Rumours: West Ham in for Ntcham?
- Denayer to return to Celtic?
- Reported Celtic target Craig Dawson is understood to have handed in a transfer request. Rumours surround the West Brom defender’s future, with reports down south suggesting the 28-year-old hasn’t been at training for weeks.
- Celtic have signed Irish striker Jack Larkin from Waterford. The 18-year-old joins from the Irish side’s Under-17 squad and has joined Celtic’s development side after signing a three-year deal
- Celtic have dismissed reports linking Kieran Tierney with a move to Fulham, maintaining not planning on selling any of their players this summer.
Review
(Mikebhoy67 of KDS)
These are tortuous games. I really don't care how we play. It literally is, all about getting through the ties. They are seldom ever comfortable. Elfsborg? Qarabag? HJK Helsinki? Astana? the list goes on.
The pressure thats on the players and staff must be a massive burden. Well done tonight Celtic.
First, the positives.
I think that most of the players thought that the tie was over because of the first leg result. I said before the game, multiple times, that Rosenborg don't look to have a lot of goals in them. Their league form and the matches against us have shown that to be the case. I honestly think that we didn't get out of third gear tonight because the tie was as good as done. The players can be forgiven for that because the performance at CP, barring the first 15-20 minutes was phenomenal. Over the course of the two games, we d served to go through – there is no denying it.
Only a couple of players got pass marks tonight for me. Hendry, Ajer, and Gordon. There's no denying that we were better in the second half and I think the centre back pairing did fine considering their lack of a partnership alone together and the pressure that was piled upon them by everyone. It is obviously a weak point in our team but they handled it quite well at times.
Now, for the negatives.
First, I'm sure that Ajer now misses out on the first leg of the AEK game because he has two bookings. That means that we could be lining up with Jozo and Hendry in the middle of defence. Tierney went off injured and I am really, really hoping that he is fit enough for the matches against AEK. If he isn't, what exactly do we do with our defence? The end of the match showed that our defence was pretty patch work. We had to move Gamboa (of all people) over to the left for the last 10 minutes. If it wasn't bloody clear that we needed some competition for Tierney, then it really should be now. That said, Lustig, Jozo, Boyata and Tierney is a pretty decent defence if everyone is fit and ready. Much better than we've had available lately anyway.
Brown doesn't look up to it right now and that is definitely worrying. He looks bereft of match sharpness and doesn't look to be at the same levels as he was at last season.
But really, we need to strengthen. Outside of the defence, our whole team looked patch work at the end of the match. Gamboa on the left, McGregor on the right, Christie up front – it wasn't good enough. We had a serious lack of depth in the team tonight because of injuries and other factors. It should be a bit clearer next week (hopefully) but we can't be sure. Griffiths might be back, Demebele might be back, Boyata and Lustig might be back to full fitness. Then again, that's a lot of "might". If their not, we are effed. Truly.
We need people in the door to help the squad out. There's no doubt about it. AEK are better than Rosenborg, there's no doubt. We need to be stronger and we need to be better. We need two big performances and after this result, I'm a bit more concerned than I was when the draw was made.
I really hope that we can get a couple of players in and a few back to fitness by next week.

Celtic negotiated their way into the third qualifying round of the Champions League with a 3-1 aggregate victory against Rosenborg following a gritty goalless draw at the Lerkendal Stadium.
The Scottish champions took a two-goal advantage to Norway from the first leg of their second qualifying round in Glasgow but were tentative in a first half which saw an added-time save from keeper Craig Gordon prevent Marius Lundemo from opening the scoring for the home side.
Brendan Rodgers’ side frustrated their hosts after the break without threatening too much themselves and the Norwegians ran out of imagination and inspiration and ultimately out of the competition.
Celtic, who have qualified for the lucrative group stages of the competition in the last two seasons under Rodgers, now take on AEK Athens in the next round with the first match at Parkhead next week and with a possible play-off to follow.
Rodgers kept faith with the same side which started in the first leg with regular right-back Mikael Lustig on the bench after returning late from World Cup duties with Sweden.
Celtic had started the game in Glasgow unsteadily and lost an early goal to Birger Meling before rallying in style and this time there were a few first-half scares.
Only a saving tackle by Cristian Gamboa in the seventh minute, with the Hoops defence stretched, prevented Pal Andre Helland going clear in on goal against Gordon.
The Parkhead defender was less concise when his attempted headed clearance landed at the feet of Meling but his wild drive cleared the bar by yards.
In the 16th minute Gordon caused some alarm among the 200 or so travelling Celtic fans when he fumbled a whipped-in cross from Helland with stopper Jack Hendry unconvincingly completing the clearance.
The home side grew in confidence but at times their passing lacked precision, although Lundemo’s close-range header from Helland’s cross inside two minutes of added-time was goalbound before Gordon stretched to tip the ball over the bar.
Within a minute of the restart a powerful run from Odsonne Edouard, aided by Callum McGregor, ended with his right-footed drive from 14 yards escaping the far post.
The swift move promised a more dynamic Celtic but Rosenborg quickly responded with efforts from Meling and skipper Mike Jensen, both going wide.
In the 65th minute, after Tom Rogic replaced James Forrest, Gordon made a fine save from an angled-drive by Rosenborg substitute Jonathan Levi, on earlier for Helland.
The home side, under the tutelage of interim boss Rini Coolen, the academy director who took over from the sacked Kare Ingebrigtsen before the game at Parkhead, saw the tie slowly drift away.
Rosenborg had the ball in the net in the 87th minute but Swiss referee Sandro Scharer ruled it out for a challenge by Nicklas Bendtner on Gordon and, with that, all Norwegian hope was gone.
Celtic set up a tie with AEK Athens by eliminating Rosenborg in the Champions League second qualifying round.
A goalless draw in Trondheim meant Celtic's 3-1 first-leg win was sufficient to beat the Norwegians.
The hosts dominated the first 45 minutes, Marius Lundemo having a powerful header saved by Craig Gordon with the best chance of the half.
Celtic were much better after the break, Odsonne Edouard and Scott Sinclair coming closest to scoring.
Tore Reginiusses was denied a late goal when he was adjudged to have fouled Gordon as the two contested an aerial ball.
Brendan Rodgers' men will host AEK Athens next Wednesday, with the return leg taking place in Greece the following week.
Rosenborg drop into the Europa League third qualifying round, where they will face Cork City.
Celtic should take 'aggressive' approach against AEK

Blunt Rosenborg spare Celtic
This was not vintage Celtic, but as Rodgers had underlined pre-match, the task so early in the campaign is finding a way to progress.
Rosenborg were tidy, but blunt in attack – mercifully for Celtic. They enjoyed the bulk of the first-half possession and pressure, but scarcely made it tell.
Gordon did have to make one vital intervention in injury time, springing upwards and pushing Lundemo's looping header over the bar.
Otherwise, his contributions were limited to dealing with a couple of inswinging corners and making a meal of a hopeful cross from the dangerous Pal Andre Helland.
Celtic looked to be playing well within themselves. The onus was not on them to take the initiative and it was not until the opening minute of the second period that they threatened a potentially decisive away goal.
Edouard combined down the left with Callum McGregor before deftly gliding away from two defenders, only to curl his shot narrowly wide.
Celtic began to take greater care of the ball, presumably something demanded of them by their manager at the break.
But substitute Jonathan Levi injected life into the home side and he stung the palms of Gordon with a fierce shot from the right of the penalty area.
Celtic still have several first-team players working their way to full fitness and will be in a better place when AEK Athens visit Glasgow. They will probably have to be too.
'Improvements needed for AEK' – analysis
Pat Bonner
Former Celtic goalkeeper Pat Bonner on BBC Radio Scotland:
I want to see Celtic coming to these places and controlling the game. In that first half, they just didn't.
They'll have to improve against these higher-level teams, like AEK. They will create things around the edge of the box, they will be quick and sharp in bursts, and Celtic will have to defend better against that.
Former Celtic striker Scott McDonald on BBC Radio Scotland:
Rodgers will still be disappointed, but they were comfortable. I can't really think of too many chances that Rosenborg had. I think they just ran out of ideas.
The job was done in the first leg. They will just have to be more aware against AEK, sharpen up defensively and make sure they are more compact. The first leg is at Celtic Park and if they perform as they did against Rosenborg, they will be in good shape.
