Trivia

  • UEFA Cup/Europa League
    Match Day 5 of 6
    Stade Rennais – aka Rennes
Celtic already through to KO stage following last match. Rennes bottom and already out regardless of result in this match and next.
Celtic are through despite Lazio and Rennes having been big favourites.
Celtic have secured post Christmas European football three seasons in a row for the first time since 1971/1972. The first time in almost 50 years.
Following the latest UEFA disciplinary decision, Celtic decided to partially close the Green Brigade section. The Club also faces another UEFA charge for the use of pyrotechnics during the match in Rome recently and this will be heard on 12th December 2019.
  • Celtic top the group and will go through seeded into the next round.
  • First time Celtic will have topped the group ever in European competition at end of the run of group matches. Also so far unbeaten in this group stage.
  • Sevco also close to qualification, they top their group but it's a tight group.
  • Celtic rested Edouard, but still had three different scorers today. Dominant display.
  • Celtic AGM was contentious, with the Green Brigade suspension brought up as well as issues over Sevco.
  • Tony Stokes been cut from his latest club, this time in Iran. So again good luck to him finding another club.
  • Sevco chairman & dodgy man Dave King announces he is to step down in January. Some of the press fawns over him, the rest of us laugh at the 'glib & shameless liar'
  • Celtic have avoided defeat in each of their first five group stage games to a Champions League/Europa League campaign for the first time.
  • They have won four consecutive games in major European competitions (excluding qualifiers) for the first time since November 2002 in the Uefa Cup.
  • Forrest has been directly involved in three goals in his last four Europa League games – as many as he had in his previous 23 appearances in the competition.
  • Christie's goal was Celtic's first from outside the box in a major European competition (excluding qualifiers) since Callum McGregor against Ajax in the Europa League in November 2015

ReviewCeltic 3 Rennes 1

(jbcity of kds)

A brilliant performance by all in this run of the mill match for both sides. Rennes already well out of it, and Celtic already qualified.

Celtic on top for the full game, with few chances by Rennes.

three good goals by different players, notably the youngsters so all bodes well.

Griffiths came on late as substitute but he can see he will have competition going forward. Lennon will be very happy overall with tactics & commitment.

No Green Brigade as they have been blocked for one game half of their area was closed down, so atmosphere was down but still good in the ground.

Much respect also to the Rennes fans who joined in with the fun at the game despite the result & their performance. Highly respected tonight.

Only Sinclair will be disappointed, he was nowhere near the side! Seems like its all over.

Have your say
When you set the kind of standards Celtic have over the past three and a half years, some milestone moments inevitably resonate less than others.
But the treble-treble winning Scottish champions racked up another landmark achievement to be proud of as they secured a first-place finish in Group E of the Europa League with a comprehensive win over Rennes.

Goals from Lewis Morgan, Ryan Christie and substitute Mikey Johnston handed manager Neil Lennon the result he desired to maintain his team’s impressive momentum this season.

Celtic had already clinched qualification for the knockout stages of the Europa League but they are now certain to finish top of a European club competition group for the first time. It also means they will be seeded in the draw for the last 32.

Morgan has been a peripheral figure at Celtic since joining them from St Mirren 18 months ago and has recently been strongly linked with another loan reunion with his former manager and mentor Jack Ross at Hibs.
But, as he made only his seventh starting appearance for the club, deployed as the focal point of Celtic’s attack in the absence of Odsonne Edouard, the 23-year-old Scotland international made the most of the unexpected opportunity.
Morgan’s 22nd-minute opener for the hosts came as they started to take a firm grip of the contest, having subdued a lively start from Rennes who had forced Fraser Forster into the first meaningful save of the evening when the goalkeeper did well to keep out a stinging drive from Romain del Castillo. When his first sniff of goal came, Morgan was unable to react sharply enough to take advantage after Rennes keeper Edouard Mendy could only parry a long-range effort from Olivier Ntcham.
But he produced an instinctive finish which any striker would be proud of when Celtic went in front. It was a fine move from Lennon’s men, the one-touch combination build-up down the left from Greg Taylor and James Forrest matched by Morgan’s first time left-foot shot which beat Mendy to his right.

Celtic’s concentration levels dipped momentarily three minutes later when Del Castillo, left unmarked as he got on the end of Benjamin Bourigeaud’s corner, glanced a header narrowly wide of Forster’s left-hand post.
The home side were quickly back on the front foot and Mendy did well to save another powerful long-range effort from Ntcham who had been set up by a good lay-off from Morgan.
Moritz Bauer, who has effectively become Celtic’s third-choice right back behind Hatem Elhamed and Jeremie Frimpong over the past few months, was another keen to impress as he started due to the absence of that duo through injury and ineligibility respectively.
The Austrian international caught the eye going forward and produced a fine cross which Morgan could only head straight at Mendy from close range.

But Celtic claimed the second goal their dominance merited in first-half stoppage time. The Rennes defence were caught flat-footed as Christie latched onto Scott Brown’s headed through ball, the attacking midfielder cutting in from the right and drilling in a left-foot shot which beat the ponderous Mendy at his left-hand post.

Rangers eye veteran striker deal, Celtic could sell midfielder, Gers duo out of Feyenoord clash, injury blow for Hearts – Scottish…

Rennes had made eight changes to their starting line-up, making no attempt to disguise the fact their priority in what has developed into a dismal season is their league fixture at home to St Etienne this weekend. To their credit, however, they continued to apply themselves to bringing a competitive edge to a fixture in which nothing but pride was at stake.
Their physicality was sufficient to cause Brown to pick up a booking early in the second half for a foul on James Siliki. It means the Celtic captain will miss the final group game away to Cluj through suspension, albeit he may well have been rested in any case.
Rennes retained enough attacking ambition to pose some serious questions of the Celtic defence and should have pulled a goal back in the 57th minute.
Forster did brilliantly to parry a close range shot from Del Castillo, the ball breaking to Theoson Siebatcheu who looked certain to force home the rebound. Incredibly, his effort was diverted onto a post by the defiant Forster.

The big Englishman made another smart stop to deny Emmanuel Maouassa but Celtic snuffed out any prospect of a Rennes revival when they made it 3-0 in the 74th minute. It was a happy return for Johnston, absent for almost three months because of injury.
The winger, who had replaced Forrest seven minutes earlier, made a darting run and exchanged passes with Ntcham on the edge of the penalty area before guiding a low angled shot across Mendy for his fifth goal of the season.
There was consolation for Rennes a minute from time when substitute Adrien Hunou met a cross from Maouassa and flicked a neat header beyond Forster but it could not take the shine off another highly satisfying European night for Celtic.

L'Equipe: "The score is severe. Celtic, assured of finishing first in the group, scored three goals for six shots on target. Lewis Morgan opened the scoring after a magnificent collective move (21st), three minutes after a first alert of Olivier Ntcham (18th), then Ryan Christie doubled the bet on a hit that bounced off Édouard Mendy (45 + 1) ). Finally, Michael Johnston took advantage of an inspiration from Ntcham to score a third goal (74th), which is a bit harsh. Car Rennes had several big chances (7th, 25th), including a Flavien Tait shot and a Jordan Siebatcheu post in the wake (57th), until Adrien Hunou's goal late in the game (89th).

Maxifoot: "Dominated in all compartments of the game, the Breton club has lived a hell in Scotland. Celtic gave Rennes a nice lesson in football. Strolled from start to finish, despite a slight improvement after the break, Julien Stéphan's men fell to Celtic Glasgow (3-1), this Thursday, on the 5th day of the group stage. A mediocre performance that confirms the difficulties."

Ouest France: "Supporters Rennais and Scots have shared throughout the meeting in a good atmosphere. The 2,700 Rennais who made the trip even celebrated the second goal of Celtic Glasgow scored by Ryan Christie (45 + 1 '). Already well received in the first leg at Roazhon Park, the Celtic fans have made the gesture to Rennes who will certainly spend a long night in the bars of Glasgow accompanied by the famous Guinness."

Jeunes Footeux: "Defeated on the field of Celtic Glasgow (3-1), the Stade Rennais who was already certain to be eliminated from the Europa League before this fifth day, is now guaranteed to finish in the last place of the group. A very sad European campaign after a very successful 2018/2019 exercise."

France Football: "Without necessarily being brilliant, Celtic has been able to be more realistic. On the first big situation of his, Morgan opened the mark of a nice strike of the left (21st). And Mendy, who had to work on two strikes Ntcham (18th, 27th), could not do anything on that of Christie (45th + 1). Mass was said."

Footmercato: "More than the result, it is the content of the opposition benefit that leaves a bitter taste. The Rennes coach regretted it in a post-match press conference. 'We had undeniable shortcomings. To play this kind of opposition, we have limits,' he acknowledged very sincerely. This does not prevent the local press, Ouest-France in this case, from massacring the manager and the young team he had chosen to line up in Scotland."

Celtic confirmed top spot in Europa League Group E with one game to spare after a comfortable win over Rennes.

The victory, coupled with Lazio's 1-0 victory over CFR Cluj, means Neil Lennon's side will avoid Champions League dropouts in February's last 32.

Lewis Morgan's second Celtic goal and a Ryan Christie effort had the hosts in control, and Mikey Johnston added to the tally with a superb one-two finish.

Adrien Hunou's glancing header provided a late consolation for the French side.

Celtic will conclude their campaign in Romania against Cluj in two weeks in a game that is now a dead rubber.

Celtic could afford to do without Odsonne Edouard – he had "a niggle" – and still have this Europa League tie in the bag by the break. These are heady days for Lennon's side, a group that has transformed itself since elimination from the Champions League at the hands of Cluj. That failure seems like an eternity ago.

This is a team on the up and up and another feel-good night for Celtic in Europe. Rennes might have had no chance of progressing out of the group and they may be on a run of just two wins in 11 games, but they're a decent outfit that were made to look ordinary for the most part.

Olivier Ntcham and Scott Brown were impressively influential in the middle of the park, Christie was his usual buzz-bomb in attack and Morgan – playing in alien territory as Edouard's replacement – was excellent. When James Forrest came off, Johnston went on and his goal was the pick of the bunch. All three goalscorers were young Scottish players, none of them a day over 24.

Fraser Forster had his saves to make – one early on from Romain Del Castillo and a double block later on that was outstanding – but Celtic were great value for their victory and thoroughly deserving of winning the group. With that triumph comes the prize of a place in the last 32 as a seeded team.

Table
There's still a game to play in the group and Brown will miss it through suspension. He won't care a jot. The work has been done. The captain can recharge the batteries at home that night.

Celtic went ahead when Forrest came in from the left and played it into Morgan, whose timing and precision were perfect. He swept it home with aplomb. The second came just before the break when Brown showed his standard determination to win a header which found its way to Christie.

The midfielder, knocking on for a goal every other game this season, took a look up and thumped one on target, the ball bouncing in front of going behind Edouard Mendy. The fault lay with the goalkeeper, but Christie's strike was pure all the same. What an essential part of this Celtic machine he has become.

The visitors threatened early in the new half but they couldn't get the better of Forster despite having two stabs at it from point-blank range. The first one from Diafra Sakho bounced straight back off the colossus, the second one, from Theoson Siebatcheu was touched on to the post. The Rennes players could scarcely believe it.

Morgan had a strong penalty claim waved away when Mendy looked to have brought him down, but with 15 minutes left Celtic added their third and it was a beauty.

Johnston hadn't long come on the field for his first appearance since the first day of September, but when he played it to Ntcham and then took it back off him in the box, Rennes were done in. The speed of thought and speed of movement was too much, as was the finish, firmly put away to Mendy's right. Wonderful.

Lennon brought on Leigh Griffiths towards the end and the striker almost made it four only for his effort to be kicked away by Mendy. The place would have erupted had he scored.

Rennes got a consolation through a fine header from Hunou, but it didn't put the slightest dent on Celtic's night. Another step forward in an exciting and still developing European story.

Celtic have broken a record in European competition
Man of the match – Olivier Ntcham
For filling in so impressively for Edouard, Morgan is a worthy contender, but Ntcham was terrific out there. Clever, impactful, defensively strong and offensively creative, the Frenchman had a big say in this fine victory.
