Trivia
- Sunday 3pm kick-off (Celtic played in Europe two days ago); due to Celtic’s UEFA Cup game last Thursday
- Covid: no supporters at the ground; lockdowns returning across the UK. Restrictions in pubs etc return with 10pm closing, 6 maximum etc.
- Hibs had taken points off of Sevco last Sunday; Hibs are the form side outwith of the Glasgow sides, so this was a major victory.
- Turnbull subbed on and played a great game and the fans are very amazed.
- Ajeti scores again: 5th goal, but goes off with injury. Frimpong motm and is a cult favourite.
- Celtic played away in Europe on Thursday and to play away in Europe next week.
- Forrest out due to bone bruising on his ankle from Thursday’s match.
- Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross says fans yell ‘Tory b*****d’ at him while refereeing. What a shocker!!! He is a linesman in domestic games.
- Boxing: Edinburgh’s Josh Taylor moved a step closer to becoming undisputed super lightweight champion of the world after a scintillating first defence of his WBA and IBF crowns. The 29-year-old wasted little time in wiping out the previously unbeaten Apinun Khongsong of Thailand
- Rugby: SRU whine that they could lose £30m this year if fans not allowed back.
- Transfers:
- Cove Rangers confirm the signing of @CelticFC goalkeeper Ryan Mullen on a season-long loan deal
- Reports: West Brom have submitted an offer for Celtic ace Olivier Ntcham. The Frenchman has said to be interesting Southampton, Lyon and Marseille. The Baggies have reportedly put a loan-to-buy deal in front of the Scottish champions.
- Ex-Celtic star Moussa Dembele could be on the move. Lyon could sell the striker in the final week of the transfer window which would net Celtic a windfall.
- Reports: Celtic are set to make a third bid for Alfie Doughty. The Scottish champions have been unsuccessful with two previous bids for the Charlton Athletic left-back, the latest being £600k.
Summary
Neil Lennon: ““I thought it was breath-taking, I thought the football we played was outstanding against a very good side who have come here full of confidence.”

Hibs looked like they fancied Boyle against Taylor today but our man was more than good enough to stop him causing any damage. A very good performance.
(Celtic 1967)
FT 3-0:
– Great performance from the Bhoys
– Made a decent Hibs side look pish
– Frimpong excellent
– Turnbull class when he came on
– Brown much better today
– Probably our best performance of the season
– Hope Ajeti’s injury isn’t too bad
(Etims)
Broony fabulous today.
Taylor possibly his best game for Celtic.
Christie, McGregor and Moi all played well.
Ajeti..back of the netty
Frimpers fantastic
Turnbull…first impressions…wow.
Cracking team performance
(magnum121 of KDS)
eat team performance. Brown was immense, Bitton strolled through the game and made some cracking passes that caused Hibs a few scary moments and Frimpong was incredible. When is he ever going to get the protection he deserves though? Every team takes turns at trying to maim him. Turnbull looks like the player we knew him to be and his vision and link-up play, already good, will only improve with more game time. I think for the first time this season we saw effective use of the squad.
When Eddy replaced Ajeti, we looked a different animal. He is so much more than a striker. His touches are sublime. He comes deeper to take the ball and turns defenders inside out and that creates space beyond him – that’s why he needs to be part of a pair. Negatives were Ajeti’s injury, and Duffy getting caught out a couple of times. Other than that – happy bhunny

Celtic 3 – 0 Hibernian: Neil Lennon’s side ease to a comfortable victory
Premiership champions keep up the pressure on Rangers at the top

Celtic remain on the tail of Rangers at the top of the Premiership following their convincing 3-0 win over Hibernian at Parkhead.
Midfielder Callum McGregor drove the home side ahead in the seventh minute of the keenly-awaited fixture and the visitors missed a couple of chances before striker Albian Ajeti notched from close range in the 37th minute, although he injured himself in the process and was replaced by Odsonne Edouard.

Neil Lennon’s side had a much firmer grip of the second half and Hibs keeper Ofir Marciano made key saves before and after Mohamed Elyounoussi added a third in the 75th minute.
Celtic moved to within a point of Rangers with a game in hand although with the Old Firm contest coming up on 17 October, Ajeti’s injury – and the ankle knock which caused James Forrest to miss the game – will be a worry for Lennon.
He made three changes from the Europa League win over Riga on Thursday night – attackers Ajeti and Elyounoussi and wing-back Jeremie Frimpong – and they all contributed to what in the end was a decisive win.
Hibs boss Jack Ross kept the same side which started the 2-2 draw against Rangers last week but brought back loanee Jamie Murphy who had been unable to play against his parent club.
McGregor’s early goal amid an open start to the game was all about good technique.
The Scotland midfielder took a pass from Ryan Christie outside the box and steadied himself before drilling the ball low past Marciano and into the corner of the net for his second goal in a week.
That opener failed to supress the sprightly visitors who looked threatening when they moved up the pitch, exemplified in the 16th minute when striker Christian Doidge fired over the bar from a Kevin Nisbet cutback.
Nisbet then chased a long ball from Joe Newell and out-muscled Celtic defender Shane Duffy but also fired high and wide with his shot on the angle.
Ajeti’s counter came at a cost to the Switzerland international.
After good work by Christie inside the Hibs box, Elyounoussi’s shot was parried out by Marciano. Ajeti quickly returned the ball into the net for his fifth goal in nine appearances but pulled up with what looked like a hamstring problem and had to be replaced immediately by Edouard.
The match continued apace. A long-distance drive by wide-man Martin Boyle cleared the bar and at the other end the tireless Frimpong knocked a Greg Taylor cross over from a few yards out.
David Turnbull replaced Christie for the start of the second half with the experienced Lewis Stevenson on for Josh Doig to try to contain Frimpong with Murphy soon on for Drey Wright.
However, before that, Marciano saved a long-distance effort by fellow Israel international Nir Bitton and he also denied Parkhead skipper Scott Brown, Turnbull and McGregor, all of whom had powerful shots on target.
Celtic were well on top and Hibs’ belief dissipated.
Any time that Hibernian did fashion a chance, invariably they failed to hit the target as Newell did in the 75th minute with a drive from 14 yards which went over the bar before Nisbet’s shot was blocked by Duffy.
Celtic showed how it should be done when Turnbull played in Elyounoussi and he confidently slipped the ball past Marciano to ensure a smooth finish.
“The gauntlet was thrown down, fortunately Celtic picked it up,” David Potter
By David Potter 27 September, 2020 No Comments
This was a splendid Celtic performance. I was a little depressed after watching the Motherwell v Rangers game on SKY TV (some dreadful punditry there, by the way) because the Rangers did look good, and very definitely for about an hour, the gauntlet was thrown down.
Fortunately Celtic picked it up, and by eliminating the third best team from the League race, made it clear (if we hadn’t realised earlier) that it is a two horse race for the 10IAR Stakes.

Not only were the goals good but the passing was first class with Scott Brown dispelling any thoughts from pessimists (such as myself, I must own up) that his best days are perhaps him. It was clear that we were up against a very good team (their record shows that and they played well against the Rangers last week) but Celtic more or less swept them aside.
Jeremie Frimpong is a class act. He is fast and accurate, and showed in his post match interview that he is just exactly the son that every mother or father would want – charming, lovable and totally committed to the club. All in all, a very impressive young man.
Callum McGregor was once again first class with a marvellous goal, but the chap that really impressed me today was David Turnbull. What a lovely assist for the third goal! Once again, attitude and commitment shine through.

Negative thoughts are hard to find today. Shane Duffy made a couple of mistakes in the first half, there was once when Vasilis Barkas did not catch the ball cleanly enough and Odsonne Edouard did not run riot in the second half.
Nevertheless these are minor gripes, although I wonder why the referee allowed Vasilis Barkas to wear that colour of a strip which looked so like the Hibs colours? The problem could, of course, have been solved if Hibs had worn their real colours which do NOT clash with those of Celtic. (Look at the Dixie Deans Cup final of 1972 on You Tube if you don’t believe me!)
And did I see the leader of the Scottish Conservative Party on the stand touchline again? He was there last week as well, was he not? Does he like us? Actually, Mr McLean had a good game, and the TV Coverage on Celtic TV was also good with Gordon Strachan’s comment priceless. He was listening to the radio on his car on Thursday night and wondered how many Frimpongs there were, because he was always getting mentioned.

Only real regrets today were the injury to Albian Ajeti – he looks good that man – and of course that there weren’t 60,000 of us there to watch a tremendous game of football and a tremendous Celtic performance! But Celtic TV, of whom I have been critical in the past, did a good job today.
Sarajevo, that city known for dark deeds in 1914, now beckons on Thursday, but as I understand it, we won’t actually be in the city of Sarajevo. Pity the Archduke Ferdinand couldn’t have been similarly diverted!

Unhappy Celtic manager Neil Lennon hits back at critics
Parkhead boss irked by claims that his team ‘toiled’ to Europa League victory against Riga
By Alan Pattullo

Neil Lennon has appealed for more respect after he and his players were subjected to criticism following Thursday’s hard-earned 1-0 win in Latvia against FC Riga.
It was a case of job done in difficult circumstances as far as Lennon was concerned. His post-match comments reflected his satisfaction at securing a play-off round tie this Thursday night against FC Sarajevo, which once again is away from home. He described the team as having played well.
Celtic: Get the latest team news, match previews and reports
But this view only served to further irk some fans, who were unimpressed by the length of time it took to break the home side down. Supporters were concerned by the lack of creativity in midfield. Reports of the game, meanwhile, dwelt on Celtic’s difficulties in seeing off mediocre opposition.
Celtic return to home territory this afternoon when they host Hibernian. Lennon knows only too well that the visitors will present their own problems as Celtic seek to record a sixth consecutive league win.
He was full of admiration for what Jack Ross has done at his old club. “He’s done a cracking job and they have recruited well,” he said.
However, the reaction to Thursday’s night’s victory was still clearly rankling Lennon. He noted Celtic’s impressive away form in Europe since his return for a second spell as manager. They lost only once in eight trips last season.
Unusually, it was their home form that let them down. They were eliminated from Champions League qualifying after a 4-3 loss at home to CFR Cluj and went out at the last 32 stage of the Europa League after a 3-1 defeat against FC Copenhagen at Celtic Park.
Lennon viewed Thursday night’s victory as another successful assignment in what are currently very strange and often challenging circumstances.
“I wasn’t happy with some of the narratives after the game in terms of headlines where we ‘toiled’ and ‘scraped through’ – we didn’t,” he said.
“We were in total control of the game. Yes, we didn’t hammer them 3-0 or 4-0. We could have done. [Albian] Ajeti hit the post, we had another chance flash across the line, [Callum] McGregor flashed one across in the first half, the keeper made a decent save from [Ryan] Christie. It wasn’t as if we weren’t creating chances.
[Jeremie] Frimpong (inset), particularly in the second half, was a real catalyst for us going forward. We are adapting as best we can to the different protocols that are put in place,” he added.
As for Thursday’s trip to face FC Sarajevo, he revealed the game is expected to be switched to Zenica, about 70 kms north of the capital city.
Sarajevo’s Europa League third qualifying clash against Buducnost Podgorica last week, which they won 2-1, was also moved there.
With the local airport closed at night, Lennon and his players will stay an extra night before travelling back to Scotland on Friday ahead of Sunday’s clash against St Johnstone in Perth.
“We are playing in a neutral stadium, no fans and so it is just about getting the preparations right as best we can before the game,” he said. “We look forward to it. Our away form has been superb. Apart from away to Cluj last year, when we had already qualified, we have a very, very good unbeaten record in the last couple of years which delights me, because playing away from home in Europe, as I know myself, is very difficult to do.”
Lennon also defended Odsonne Edouard’s performance in Latvia. The striker looked listless throughout and was replaced with eight minutes to go by Mohamed Elyounoussi, who scored the winner in the final moments. Lennon admitted there is some “agitation” on Edouard’s part amid continued links with a move elsewhere.
“He’s a human being at the end of the day, he’s 22,” said Lennon. “We know what a talent he is. He didn’t have the best of games but we know what we’ve got with Odsonne, he’s a quality player.
“We don’t want him to go, obviously, and we have had no significant interest in him as yet. There’s always a bit of agitation when the window’s open but speaking to him he seems content enough. He didn’t have his best of games, but that’s fine.”
Lennon admitted he will take a “deep breath” when the transfer window shuts a week tomorrow. Ideally, he said, he would like to add one more player to his squad before then.
He did not reveal in which position but such a comment will not quell ongoing speculation about Edouard’s future prior to next week’s deadline.

Celtic turned in the “performance of their season” so far as they beat Hibernian to remain one point behind Scottish Premiership leaders Rangers, says Neil Lennon.
But they lost Albian Ajeti to injury, ruling him out of Thursday’s Europa League trip to FK Sarajevo.
Hibs have not won at Celtic Park since January 2010, and goals from Callum McGregor, Ajeti and Mohamed Elyounoussi scuppered hopes of ending that record.
Celtic still have a game in hand.
The Easter Road side remain third, but they have played two games more than fourth-placed Aberdeen.
“It was 10 out of 10, the best of the season and one of the best of my time as manager, first or second time around,” said manager Lennon.
“I thought we were outstanding and I thought the football we played was brilliant. I thought the control of the game was brilliant.
“We defended when we had to – really well – and it was just an outstanding all-round team performance. I’m pleased, it was a big game for us.”
The Edinburgh side spurned plenty of chances. Christian Doidge, Kevin Nisbet and Joe Newell all fired over from close range.
Reaction and how it happened
How did you rate the players?
Leigh Griffiths returned to the Celtic squad, the Scotland striker without a competitive game since a hat-trick against St Mirren in March. And he was joined on the bench by Odsonne Edouard, who was dropped in favour of summer signing Ajeti.
But the opening goal came from midfield, with McGregor finding a pocket of space outside the box and arrowing a low shot into the far corner past the outstretched hand of Ofir Marciano.
The goal did not rattle Hibs, though, and Doidge was close to drawing Hibs level when he sent Nisbet’s cut-back over the bar from inside the box. Nisbet then shot high, with Martin Boyle also frustrated.
But they were punished for their missed chances as Celtic doubled their lead. Ryan Christie did well to hold on to the ball in the box under pressure, Jeremie Frimpong nudged his pass into the path of Elyounoussi, whose shot was saved, but Ajeti slotted home the rebound for his fifth goal this term.
That was to be the Swiss striker’s last action, hobbling off afterwards, with Edouard back into the fray.
Celtic’s two wing-backs were the cause of Celtic’s threat, and Greg Taylor’s cross found Frimpong on the run but the Dutchman side-footed over. Scott Brown forced a good save from Marciano and seconds later the Israeli goalkeeper had to tip over from David Turnbull, who replaced Christie at the break, as Celtic looked for a third goal early in the second half.
Newell could not find the target for Hibs from inside the box, and Doidge had a shot charged down, but by this time the chances from the visitors were at a premium as Celtic dominated possession.
And Elyounoussi killed the game with a third goal when he strolled on to Turnbull’s through ball to slip the ball under Marciano.
Man of the match – Jeremie Frimpong
Celtic’s Jeremie Frimpong in action against Hibs’ Paul McGinn
Frimpong was again a major threat for Lennon’s men, tormenting Hibs constantly on the right hand side
What did we learn?
Celtic were criticised in midweek despite beating FC Riga to reach the play-off round of the Europa League.
Over the 90 minutes against Hibs they did wobble at times despite their early lead, but improved as the game went on with Taylor and Frimpong at the heart of sparking Celtic into life when they needed it.
Turnbull is also beginning to settle into life at Celtic after his move from Motherwell, and he impressed after replacing Christie at half-time.
Hibs had plenty of moments in the Celtic box and as always looked a threat on the counter attack, but they were not clinical enough.
What they said
Celtic performance ‘one of the best’ – Neil Lennon
Celtic manager Neil Lennon: “We were up against a good side who had won all their away games.
“It was a good test for us, and I thought we came through it with flying colours. It was a brilliant team performance, absolutely brilliant.”
Hibernian manager Jack Ross: “I’ve no complaints over the end result, but first half I thought we were very good, there were aspects of our performance that were very good. We found ourselves in good areas of the pitch regularly, but were not clinical enough.
“It’s unusual for us because we’re normally very good at that. We just fell a little bit short today but our working to get ourselves into that area of the pitch was good.”
Positives despite Hibernian defeat – Jack Ross
What’s next?
Celtic will aim for a place in the Europa League group stage when they travel to FK Sarajevo on Thursday. They return to domestic action next Sunday away to St Johnstone.
Hibernian host Hamilton on Friday evening, their last engagement before the international break.
