Summary
Ex-Celt Chris Sutton:
“Rangers thoroughly deserved their victory. I can moan all evening about Celtic having so many players out, but the players who played should have performed better. I thought Celtic were gutless. The scoreline flattered Celtic and Rangers deserved to win by more. That’s the truth. At 2-0, Rangers deserved to win by more.”
(Lubo lf of KDS)
I dont think the 3-5-2 works without Griffiths and Edouard….the chemistry just seemed to be good. We certainly have a lot of good players but how should we line-up…..Seems like we are trying to fit alot good player in positions they are really suited for, without thinking of chemistry…. We just seemed to float around aimlessly…
Ntcham has excellent skill, but there always seems to be a lack of end product, not really a holding mid or an attacking mid
Mo he’s not a winger, hes not an #10, and hes not a forward but he can score goals
Fringpong has tremendous speed and skill, but his crossing let him down
Klimala a good hardworking player, but it wasnt coming off. Hes not at the level of Edouard, Griffiths or Ajeti.
Laxalt a tough ask coming in from the cold, probably hasnt played that much
For sure we missed Edouard and Christie, but we have a lot of talent out there.
With the players at our disposal yesterday, I would have went with a conservative 4-4-2. That had a compact midfield ready to battle it out
Twitter:
TheCelticWiki: There’s a staleness & complacency at Celtic which has allowed an unprecedented position of dominance to be thrown away. Today should be a catalyst for urgent change. But I can’t see it, not when for many fans past glories seem more important than current failings.
Murphio1888 : The worst part of this is that Rangers haven’t been that good – they played far better in the League Cup final. We have been utterly abysmal – flat, no imagination, no shape, no urgency, powerpuff it attack, weak in defence and the keeper is utter shite. Great days.
M67: Got what we deserved. Absolutely nothing. I can accept losing these games when we give our all and make them earn it. To lose in such a gutless, heartless way is unacceptable. No fight, no passion. Nothing. I appreciate that we had a lot of important players missing, but still.
Plarkin: With six players out, I didn’t think we would get a top performance. I did think we could expect things like passion, urgency and determination. The club got a lot of kudos for recruitment in the window, it had to step up today and didn’t. Today was unacceptable.
BTW:
What Lenny needed to say, “I got the team selection wrong and should have made changes earlier. Will work on that and move forward. Some players need more urgency if they’ll make it here.” What Lenny said, “we created some good chances in the first half”
TheCelticBlog: Today was nothing out of the ordinary; we are flat, deadening to watch and we’re not exactly blessed in the coaching department. We’ve seen this film on repeat for months; today we played against a team who took their chances, that’s all.
Michael Stewart: Rangers have dominated the last three games against Celtic. But that one is by far the easiest & most comfortable for Rangers. Celtic completely devoid of any idea how to breakdown their rivals. Huge opportunity for Gers to build a large lead and maintain it over next few months
P Klein: Believe it fair to say that Gerrard has figured out Lennys tactics over last few games and there’s been no adjustment made. For me, it all starts and ends in midfield and they are winning that battle. Add to that that we have 11 players, but not a team (yet?).
Gianni Capaldi: No tactics, No conviction, no fight, lack of quality, no urgency. Too predictable #Celtic… Totally Embarrassing. No shots on goal?Only consolation is that Beaton canny celebrate in the Crown bar.
BMcNally: Forget the personnel problems… that #Celtic display was abysmal, embarrassing & totally unacceptable.
No passion, no pride, no pace, no penetration or plan. Not one shot on target in a derby says it all. Lennon got it badly wrong & must look at himself for this abject no-show.

Celtic 0-2 Rangers: Citadel stormed at a canter as fissure appears in ten-in-a-row tilt
It might be too early to say that the Celtic empire is crumbling.
By Andrew Smith
Saturday, 17th October 2020, 3:55 pm
https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/celtic/celtic-0-2-rangers-citadel-stormed-canter-fissure-appears-ten-row-tilt-3006792
It isn’t premature, though, to suggest Rangers most emphatic victory over the bitter foes at Parkhead in almost exactly a decade has opened up a fissure. A crack in the foundations upon which Celtic’s tilt for an historic tenth straight title has been founded.
The 2-0 victory, which sees Steven Gerrard become the first Rangers manager to win back-to-back games at Celtic Park since Walter Smith 25 years ago, will delight and disturb in equal measure for the two clubs. Rangers will pinch themselves that they required only to be competent and – with Connor Goldson’s double – able to capitalise on slipshod defending to run out such comfortable winners. They absolutely cantered after bagging a second in only 54 minutes.
Celtic: Get the latest team news, match previews and reports
Backing up their words
Gerrard and his men talked confidently in the build-up. The Ibrox manager gave no indication he expected other than a victory that opens up a four-point gap over Celtic, who have played a game fewer. They backed that up, simply by showing an assurance and trusting their team structure to nullify their hosts.
Celtic will point to the backdrop against which the fixture took place to explain away their lifelessness. Yet, forget the absence of any supporters – they were beaten convincingly with full backing when the teams met in December – it was the absence of players for Covid-19 reason they will blame for their torpor.
In the case of Odsonne Edouard, literally so, with the virus having taken so much out of the striker, he didn’t even make the bench. Ryan Christie’s enforced isolation through being judged a Covid-19 close contact denied them a source of energy they singularly lacked. Either one of fellow Covid-19 sufferers Nir Bitton or Hatem Elhamed would have been pressed into action in a back three, where Stephen Welsh was berthed for only his second senior appearance. Not that the 20-year-old could be faulted any more than his fellow centre-backs Shane Duffy and Kristoffer Ajer, who both didn’t cover themselves in glory at Rangers’ ninth-minute opener.
Eyeing up the sentry
The Ibrox men got their groove then. They exuded the conviction and assurance of a team well versed to playing together, not a single member of their starting XI experiencing the fixture for the first time. Gerrard has built his side over two years. Lennon had to rebuild his in the past two weeks, and he just could not find the right adhesives. No fewer than four members of the home starting line-up – Diego Laxalt, Patryk Klimala, Duffy and Welsh – were making their derby debuts. On loan AC Milan left wing-back Diego Laxalt had never appeared for the club before in any circumstances.
Yet for all that Celtic had half a team out, for all that they are in flux, this should blind to the fact that Gerrard has moulded his men to put their rivals to the sword – whatever the personnel – four times now in the past two years. The changing of the guard may not quite have arrived. However, there is no question that the Ibrox men are eyeing up the sentry box and licking their lips.
Story of the match
The story of the afternoon can be related quite simply. It took Celtic 80 minutes to have an effort even sort-of on target. Even that was debatable, substitute Leigh Griffths rounding Allan McGregor from an Ajer through pass before taking the ball so wide that his subsequent attempt was deflected towards the keeper after it was knocked across goal.
Rangers, it must be said, did not have many clear cut efforts either. They didn’t need them when Duffy’s uncertainty about playing offside allowed his former Brighton team-mate to get on the end of a free-kick from James Tavernier that he nodded past the rooted Vasilis Barkas. They then had Celtic exactly where they wanted them for much of the first half hour, Lennon’s men betraying that they had never played together before. Yet, they should have equalised on the quarter hour mark. Then, Mohamed Elyounoussi – one of the more lively home performers – passed up a huge chance when he lobbed the ball over the bar with McGregor near the edge of the box after he had hustled Goldson out of possession.
So little could Celtic construct in an attacking sense it was assured they were goners when Goldson struck again seven minutes after the interval. Glen Kamara and Scott Arfield worked the ball well down the right before a low cross found the English centre-back on the edge of the six yard box. Duffy blocked his first attempt, but he poked the rebound wide of an again motionless Barkas.
An afternoon strangely uninvolving, that was to do with the largely one-sided nature as much as the empty stands. The continual lamenting over the absence of supporters owing to the Covid-19 has too often this week overlooked the virus that spreads inside any arena these derbies are held.
Healthier atmosphere?
It may seem to go entirely against the grain, but it was refreshing to watch the contest without the bile and sectarian hatred cascading from the stands. Frankly, you can often feel entirely unclean as the supporters of the two tribes go to war in song and action. The colour, the spectacle, the intensity may all have been hugely diminished. Yet, these are often products of egregious elements of the rivalry. To ‘enjoy’ what the rancour fashions, you have to shut-out anti-Catholic chanting, glorying in the IRA and child abuse, and sick stunts like hanging effigies and offensive banners. Forgive those of us who can live without such.
Celtic: Barkas; Duffy, Welsh (Turnbull 84), Ajer; Frimpong, Brown, Ntcham (Rogic 67), McGregor, Laxalt (Taylor 84); Elyounoussi (Ajeti 59), Klimala (Griffiths 67). Subs: Bain, Soro, Henderson, Ralston.
Rangers: McGregor; Tavernier, Goldson, Helander, Barisic; Kamara, Davis, Arfield (Aribo 90); Kent, Barker (Jack 62), Morelos (Itten 87). Subs: McLaughlin, Balogun, Bassey, Jones, Hagi, Defoe.
“Unacceptable. Unbelievable. Unforgivable,” David Potter’s damning verdict
By David Potter 17 October, 2020 No Comments
Unacceptable! Unbelievable! Unforgivable!
Just what was all this about, Celtic? Why was there no effort? Why, when the team were 0-2 down and time running out, did we have the scarcely credible sight of Celtic passing the ball across the park? Why did no-one seem to care? We are deserving of explanations. Just what happened today?
Embed from Getty Images
Mistakes can be forgiven. There were two bad mistakes. I have said before that the jury is out on the goalkeeper. A verdict was possibly delivered today. And Elyounoussi! What on earth got into him? A simple slipping of the ball along the ground would have produced the goods. The second goal absolutely cried out for the big ugly punt up the park. These were mistakes, bad ones certainly, but even they need not necessarily have been fatal ones – as long as the team fought back. But it didn’t!
Excuses about coronavirus, empty stadiums and International commitments simply won’t wash! Nor could you really blame the referee. There is no excuse. Celtic simply have to cope with all that if they want to win 10 titles in a row. The important thing, as always, is hunger – the desire to be “in their face”, to get to the ball first, to stop Rangers running the show. That was sadly missing today – and to an unbelievable extent. Just what on earth is going on? We are mystified.

The team was again a funny one. It was hardly the best game to give Diego Laxalt his debut when Greg Taylor was available, and once again we would have liked to see Leigh Griffiths on the park from the start. As it is, there must now be major questions marks about Olivier Ntcham and Patryk Klimala. Several others under-performed as well. Elyounoussi really must raise his game, and Jeremie Frimpong, an excellent player normally, seemed to have a problem knowing whether he was meant to defend or attack. As it was, he did neither satisfactorily.
Rangers? They got it easy today. Didn’t you just love that playful slap at Scott Brown by Alfredo Morelos? If my 5 year old granddaughter did that to her brother, she might get a row from her mother! Rangers, however, are off to a good start this season. But if we start thinking that we cannot beat them, then we are in trouble. We were mighty close to that attitude today. Why? They are not unbeatable.

So a deep breath is in order, and let us brace ourselves for the flak that is bound to come our way. It will not be easy to read the gloating Daily Record on Monday (so let’s not buy it!) and the vitriol and abuse from our own supporters will be equally hard to take.
So we will quite simply, have to pick ourselves up. There is still a long way to go yet, and we have to face Rangers another three times this season. That is either a cause for depression or a signal to waken up! But the immediate concern is not so much AC Milan on Thursday (Europe is a bit of a distraction this year, let’s face it) as Aberdeen the next two weekends. And it is Aberdeen we have to play sometime (after the New Year, presumably) because that is the fixture missing. We really have to fight back now. This winter in particular the fans need a team to be happy about.
Embed from Getty Images
The answer lies in anger, but controlled anger. It is good for some of the players to take a long hard and angry look at themselves. A shrinking of egos and swollen heads is also in order in some cases. But then all that must be replaced by a grim determination that it must not happen again.
And to be honest, I found myself in agreement with SKY TV and Ally McCoist and Andy Walker. They were similarly mystified by it all!

Rangers inflicted the first Old Firm derby blow in a historic Scottish Premiership campaign – and moved four points clear at the top – with a dominant 2-0 win at Celtic Park.
In the first Glasgow derby without fans, Steven Gerrard’s side took an early lead when Connor Goldson headed in James Tavernier’s free-kick.
And the Rangers centre-back then also tapped in after the break to finish off a lacklustre and unfamiliar Celtic side shorn of four players due to Covid-19 protocols.
The win laid down a marker in a significant season, as the Ibrox side attempt to prevent their city rivals from winning an unprecedented 10th consecutive title.
Gerrard urges Rangers to build on win
Celtic ‘can’t live off past’ – Lennon
Reaction & as it happened
Neil Lennon’s team do still have a game in hand and were without star striker Odsonne Edouard and key midfielder Ryan Christie, but were nonetheless outclassed again in the unique fan-less derby.
Despite losing two of the three Old Firm meetings last season, Gerrard’s team could rightly lay claim to having looked the more accomplished side in those games.
They won the midfield battle in two of the three contests, and started in exactly the same vein with crisp passing and movement in this one.
Celtic – with five derby debutants in their ranks, including academy player Stephen Welsh at centre-back – looked unsure of themselves in possession.
The cauldron atmosphere can be suffocating in these games, but a lack of fans resulted in a more compelling tactical battle, which Rangers had the better of.
Tavernier and Borna Barisic roamed down the flanks and into spaces vacated by Celtic’s wing-backs, combining with Ryan Kent and Brandon Barker at will.
What Gerrard’s side can always rely on is quality of delivery from captain Tavernier, and his fine free-kick allowed Goldson to steer Rangers in front after just eight minutes. Celtic only managed a forlorn lob over the top from Mohamed Elyounoussi in reply before the break after he had impressively robbed Goldson.
The champions’ first-half display conformed to their recent form – if not results – as they lacked tempo and urgency. Lennon made no changes at the break, and his side continued to struggle with movement in forward areas.
Patryk Klimala was anonymous up front while Albian Ajeti made little impact when he came on midway through the second period.
Rangers, meanwhile, showed their sharpness in stretching their advantage as Scott Arfield, Glen Kamara and Alfredo Morelos all combined on the edge of the box before the former’s delivery fell to Goldson to bundle home at the second attempt.
Kent was twice denied by a lunging Kristoffer Ajer as Rangers threatened to embarrass their rivals on their own patch, while Celtic’s only flirtation with goal came when substitute Leigh Griffiths managed to round Allan McGregor but could not find the target.
The fact Celtic – who have secured 53 points from a possible 57 since the last meeting between the sides – did not manage a shot on target illustrates the scale of Rangers’ comfort.
Man of the match – Glen Kamara
Despite Goldson’s two goals, Kamara oozed class in midfield and was consistently involved in Rangers’ build-up, while he expertly nulled the threat of Jeremie Frimpong at wing-back
Despite Goldson’s two goals, Kamara oozed class in midfield and was consistently involved in Rangers’ build-up play, while he expertly nullified the threat of Jeremie Frimpong at wing-back.
What did we learn?
Rangers have undoubtedly worked out how to get the better of their rivals. Once again they shut them down in midfield and exerted control through their passing and composure. It was a complete performance.
What remains to be seen is whether this is a significant step forward. We have seen excellent Old Firm performances before from Gerrard’s side, with no trophies to show for it. We will only know whether they are the real deal this time if they are in the fight come April – but the signs are good.
As for Celtic, it seems Lennon’s favoured 3-5-2 formation is not working, which is alarming given the recruitment was focussed on filling those specific positions. Next to Rangers, they looked like a team without a clear identity, but rather a clutch of individuals who are performing below their ability.
The positive for them is that nothing is won in October, and they are the experts at bouncing back from rare defeats. Nonetheless there is undoubted concern about their current level of performance.
