Summary
Neil Lennon: “The players played with great belief tonight. We need to win our home games now. Milan and Lille play back to back so it’s important we take as many points as we can off Prague in these next two games.”
Chris Sutton: Mixed emotions for Celtic after letting a two goal lead slip. Bottom line is Neil Lennon looked like he had his Celtic team back tonight. Brave, gutsy, yes mistakes still being made but Celtic can be proud of that performance tonight… Elyounoussi best game in a Celtic jersey
(st ants on twitter)
Two things from Lille. We’re still losing piss poor goals. Another game we score two peaches and slack defending costs game. Secondly, we desperately need Wanyama type midfielder especially in second half when we fell back and couldn’t get out. Need someone who can break up play.
(Tom English on twitter)
Celtic found some confidence and form, then lost it at the end. An away draw is still a credible result. Team looked really motivated. The conspiracy theorists might give it a rest tonight
(Jaluc 61 of KDS)
Think everyone agreed was a much better performance tonight thought the shape was good in general 1st half especially and we looked sharper going forward unlucky to lose Ajer but midfield isn’t right when we have to defend and has been for years in Europe as McGregor and Christie (and Forrest when playing ) offer little defensively. They track back and run around a lot but can’t tackle and often lose their man as Christie did with the goal and McGregor and Forrest have done countless times. Ncham is far better further forward as he was tonight but will never be a defensive mid as he doesn’t have the fitness or mindset for it either (pen v sheep a prime example ) we have good players as we showed in 1st half but are continually let down by tactics and game management as most people have pointed out tonight and that’s got to be the fault of the management.Yes we are happier with the performance but it was the same mistakes of not using subs when needed to shore up the midfield and hold on to possession that have cost us as in many other games (as well as poor defending ) so I don’t think anything’s changed apart from some of our good players having good moments in the game which is the least we should expect surely? We have to make a change before it’s too late or we’ll just keep making the same mistakes
(Fb of KDS)
We are not a team that has a game plan to suffocate the opponents . I’d have thought that being 2 up at half time we could have switched to a 4-5 -1 , maybe taking Ajeti off and bringing on Soro or Turnbull to allow Brown to effectively play sweeper. Elyanoussi could have run himself into the ground for 60-65 mins to be replaced by Edouard. It might not have worked, and clearly the injury to Ajer upset us a bit, but we seem reluctant to make tactical changes at big times in games.
I’m not Lennon bashing with this, we’ve never really adapted to playing away in Europe, but we really lack savvy at times, and recent games v Cluj, Copenhagen and now tonight exhibit a lack of tactical nous that might result in more big wins.

Celtic glass half full despite loss of two second-half goals in Lille
Celtic’s glass has been presented as almost entirely drained in recent days.
By Andrew Smith
Thursday, 29th October 2020, 9:30 pm
For that reason, it is difficult to see Neil Lennon adjudging even the surrender of a two-goal lead in Lille as changing the fact that their Europa League 2-2 draw was a half-full style outcome. The mini-collapse that allowed the home side to recover from the loss of a first half Mohamed Elyounoussi double pointed to familiar defensive fragilities. In fairness, though, Lille threw everything at Neil Lennon’s men, and that they could not ultimately put them to the sword spoke of an ultimately valiant evening in the south of France. Not least because of a first-half penalty save from Scott Bain.
No doubt, there will be continued grumbles that Celtic – for the first time since 2014 – have now gone four games without a win. However, in every other respect, the performance spoke of the beginnings of a rehabilitation following a wretched period created by the draw at Abedeen on Sunday that followed on from the defeats by AC Milan and Rangers.

Vim has returned to Celtic’s attack
Elyounoussi could have easily bagged himself a hat-trick across a 90 minutes in which he was a constant menace. In the 4-2-3-1, wherein Olivier Ntcham was in the middle of the three behind Albian Ajeti, Celtic were able to fashion the one-touch interchanges that have been their hallmark in carving open opponents.
Two scintillating goals were crafted in this manner. For the 25th minute first, Ajeti produced an audacious back heel into the path of Elyounoussi who strode forward and shaped a stunning effort into the top corner.
Both Celtic full-backs put in sterling shifts, Diego Laxalt and Jeremie Frimpong both supporting their attacks and tucking in. The Dutch teenager’s enterprise was key to Celtic’s second in the 32nd minute. After powering down the flank he produced the perfect ball in to allow Elyounoussi, with awareness and deftness, to guide it into the corner.
There was a zip to Elyounoussi throughout. And as Celtic were able to relieve the pressure on them at 2-2 with some rapid breaks, the attacker was presented with a glorious opportunity to seal a monster win when he breezed through the middle just after they had been pegged back to 2-2, but delayed when darting into the box and was crowded out.
Moreover, the appearance of Odsonne Edouard as a late substitution for Ajeti following three weeks out because of his contracting of Covid-19 will give reason for Lennon to believe that he is getting closer to having all his major artillery back in business.
Bain and big saves
It was a major call from Lennon to retain Bain with £4.5m signing Vasilis Barkas fit again. It was spectacularly rewarded. The charge levelled at the Greek in his short Celtic career is that he hasn’t made any genuine match-changing saves. In the first period last night, his understudy – in the early part of the season, at least – produced two that were crucial.
Inside the first 13 minutes, as Celtic struggled to clear a ball that bounced around the box, Boubakary Soumare was afforded the opportunity to send in a ferocious drive that Bain somehow clawed away.
Dundee supporters used to bemoan that Bain didn’t save penalties. He showed he can against Lille with a spot-kick that was rough justice on Celtic, with a clip from Shane Duffy on Jonathan David in the 39th minute, clearly outside the box.
David, the £25m signing that hasn’t been able to score for his new French club, then couldn’t outsmart Bain, who faked to go one way then dived right only to stop the Canadian’s attempt with his foot down the left.
That the keeper had luck as well as judgment on his side was demonstrated a couple of minutes later when he dropped a cross only for Sven Botman to fire the loose ball on to the crossbar with the goal gaping.
Defensive issues remain
Lennon’s only lament post-match was that yet another goal had been given up from a set-piece. It made for the third such counter conceded in this manner across their past four games. Celtic were beginning to creak when Lille earned a 66th minute penalty. By then they had lost Kristoffer Ajer to a suspected groin strain. Yet, even with all that, they should have better attacked a corner that Adama Soumaoro flicked on for Zeki Celik to bundle in at back post.
Again, questions will be asked of Duffy, whose head is supposed to be a magnet for such balls into the box. And again, across the evening – as the rash challenge that resulted in the erroneous penalty demonstrated – the decision-making of the on-loan Brighton centre-back appeared that of a player not trusting his instincts. It was just his luck, or rather lack of it, that the scuffed shot from Nanitamo Ikone to make it 2-2 with 16 minutes of normal time remaining, found the net after grazing off his hip. He could not be blamed for this unwelcome intervention and, like his team, he will be heartened more than beaten down by the happenings in Lille.
Lille: Magian, Celik, Botman, Soumaoro, Bradaric, Andre, Sanches (64), Ikone, Bamba, Yazici (Weah 82), David (Yilmaz 64). Subs: Arnezis, Chevalier, Djalo, Fonte Xeka, Araújo, Lihadji, Pied, Reinildo.
Celtic: Bain, Frimpong, Duffy, Ajer (Bitton 53), Laxalt, Brown (Soro 81), McGregor, Ntcham (Welsh 82), Christie (Rogic 81), Elyounoussi, Ajeti (Edouard 64). Subs: Barkas, Taylor, Griffiths, Klimala, Henderson, Karamoko.

Celtic can “take a lot of positives” despite letting slip a two-goal lead in their Europa League draw in Lille, says manager Neil Lennon.
Mohamed Elyounoussi’s outstanding first-half double – and a Scott Bain penalty save – had Celtic on track for a first win in four games.
But the hosts hit back with goals from Zeki Celik and Jonathan Ikone as Celtic held on for a first point in Group H.
“I’m delighted with the character the players showed,” said Lennon.
“We played really well. We got fatigued as the game went on and you could see the effects Covid has had on a few players.
“It says a lot when you come here and are disappointed not to win.”
Reaction & as it happened
Celtic’s task looked daunting against a Lille side keeping pace with big-spending Paris St-Germain at the top of Ligue 1.
After surviving a shaky start, Lennon’s men began to dominate. Albian Ajeti was in the thick of it. The Swiss striker had a goal correctly ruled out for offside then blazed over six yards out from a Ryan Christie cutback.
Celtic’s opener, though, was worth the wait. Ajeti punished Celik’s heavy touch on the right flank as he stole possession with a backheel flick that sent Elyounoussi racing into space. The Norwegian’s finish, curled into the far corner of the net from 25 yards, was exquisite.
His second wasn’t bad either. Jeremie Frimpong dashed down the right then picked out Elyounoussi amid a ruck of Lille players in the penalty box, with his cushioned first-time shot creeping in at the far corner.
Bain – deputising for Vasilias Barkas – denied the hosts a lifeline after Shane Duffy clipped the heels of Jonathan David. The contact looked a yard outside the box, but Bain made it a moot point as he stuck out a leg to stop David’s penalty down the middle.
The keeper had earned the good fortune that came his way moments later as he spilled a simple ball into the box and Sven Botman knocked it on to the top of the crossbar.
The second half was all about survival for Celtic as Lille dominated. After centre-back Kristoffer Ajer was forced off injured, Celik sneaked in at the back post to meet Adama Soumaoro’s flick-on from a corner and bundle home.
The Scottish champions had fleeting breakaways at the other end, but their lead was wiped out 15 minutes from time when Ikone’s drive deflected off Duffy.

What did we learn?
Celtic are now on their longest run without victory since 2014, yet this draw may well mark a turning point. Lennon’s team looked much more like the free-flowing side of last season as they attacked with verve and flair in a thrilling first half.
And even though their lead disintegrated, Celtic dug in to make sure they did not leave empty-handed. The return of Odsonne Edouard and Nir Bitton as substitutes after recovering from Covid-19 also strengthens Lennon’s options for a crucial run of fixtures at home and abroad.
What did they say?
Celtic manager Neil Lennon: “I was delighted with our approach to the game. First half we were outstanding and on the counter-attack we could have won the game.”
‘We played really well’ – Lennon
