Match Pictures | Matches: 20202021

Trivia

  • UEFA Cup / Europa League – Game 3; Kick-off 8pm
  • First time the two sides have met ever.
  • Celtic after this humiliation are really out of European competition now for the season. Shambles. Bottom of the group, two defeats & one draw out of three matches so far.
  • Worst home run in 30 years
  • No matches have been played in the Czech league in the last month after the government suspended matches upon introducing stricter coronavirus measures. All sporting competitions have been stopped in the country until 3 November, but an exception has been made for the Europa League. Consequentially, Sparta will go into the Celtic match having only played against AC Milan and Lille in the last month, whereas the Scottish champions have been playing twice a week. Sparta Prague’s skipper has written to Prime Minister, Andrej Babis, to ask the government to allow football to resume. As things stand the league will not be allowed to resume until 7 November, which is two days after Prague’s fixture at Celtic Park.
  • Ex-Celtic captain Paul Lambert launched a somewhat bizarre attack on Celtic player Mohamed Elyounoussi after he was caught checking his phone during Celtic’s 4-1 defeat to Sparta Prague. Lambert claimed the Norwegian internationalist had “let down Jock Stein”.
  • FIFA confirm probe that could see Scottish Tory leader Douglas Ross being suspended as a referee. He’s infamous for his overenthusiasm to have a Celtic player sent off in a match v Sevco when he was the linesman.
  • News: Austrian police are searching for at least one suspect after a multiple gun attack in the capital, Vienna, that killed four people. RIP. Seventeen other people have been wounded – some seriously – after gunmen opened fire at six different locations in the city centre on Monday evening.
  • Celtic announce Cadbury UK in an “Official snacking partner”. Why? Who knows… Easy money I guess.
  • Neil Lennon has confirmed that Forrest went under the knife on Tuesday and now faces a recovery period of between six and eight weeks, potentially ruling him out until 2021.
  • Ryan Christie Celtic transfer claim as ex-Celt Mark Wilson insists £10m Nice bid is imminent
  • News: UK terrorism threat level raised to severe, meaning an attack is highly likely.
  • Politics: Contentious elections held in the US between US President & Republican Trump v Democrat challenger Joe Biden.
  • Jeremie Frimpong has no case to answer according to Celtic manager Neil Lennon over revelations in one newspaper that a woman had come over from America to stay in the defender’s flat. “

“It’s a non-story. Jerry didn’t break any rules. I have to question the timing of the story because we were aware of it a few weeks ago”.

  • Covid
    • England has entered month long shutdown with some caveats
    • Sevco players: George Edmundson and Jordan Jones have been suspended by the club for attending a party and breaching COVID regulations. Should Sevco now have their games postponed for next two weeks?
    • Sevco hit with four figure fine by UEFA for breaching protocols during #UEL  playoff against Galatasaray
    • Confirmed by Belgian side Mechelen that Celtic’s Maryan Shved – currently on a season long loan from the Scottish Champions – is one of six players currently in quarantine after William Togui tested positive for COVID-19.
    • Limited number to be allowed into Ross County match for attendance.

Summary

Review

Chris Sutton: “Pathetic! One of the most gutless displays I’ve ever seen from a Celtic team.”

Tom English on TW: “Celtic weren’t tuned into this game from the start. Defending – and cover from midfield – has been inept. Shane Duffy exposed horrifically again. Goalkeeper really poor. Easy for Sparta Prague’s second string.”

Lennon: ““Fingers will point at me, which is fine. We were lazy. Sparta fully deserved their win. The dressing room culture will change”.

Lennon: “I don’t know where that performance came from and I can only apologise to the supporters.”

“Started ok then we got really ragged. Lost a goal from a set play again. Due to a lack of hunger. I can only apologise to the supporters. The hungrier team won tonight. I need to have a culture change the next few days. I’ve defended players to the hilt but can’t tonight”

Lennon: “If I am going to get performances like I did against Sparta Prague, then, yeah, because it will be my head that is on the block. I’ll be honest, I didn’t see it coming.

The Czech press on their own players who won this match:

“A bunch of young men joined, who usually sit among the substitutes.”

HP on TW: “Compare the workrate , effort and mobility between Celtic and Sparta last night and you’ll see exactly why we lost the game last night.Players were a disgrace , they were lucky there were no fans at the game.Where we go from here , god only knows , but it won’t be pretty.”

AgentScotland on TW:

“Lennon: “I don’t know where this performance came from”

Utterly disingenuous, if it isn’t disingenuous then he’s just admitted to being totally oblivious to what everyone has seen since the beginning of the season.”

(J2 on KDS:)

no guts

no spine

No Energy

No movement

No Strength (or height)

No ability to play the ball forward

So easy to beat: Press, panic , back to keeper, punt ,loose  possession.

We have a hole in the midfield that we cant seem to fill.

2 little things that spoke volumes for me: Laxalts exasperation at the lack of movement for EVERY throw in . Watching Kennedy trying to explain to Ncham what he had to do when he went on; a lack of desire to explain and a lack of desire to listen.

As for the Manager, when someone says ‘I dont know how’ about anything , doesnt fill you with confidence that they will be able to figure out.

The Prague Fatale – Europa League defeat is second worst in club history

By Lubo98        6 November, 2020 No Comments

https://thecelticstar.com/the-prague-fatale-europa-league-defeat-is-second-worst-in-club-history/

CELTIC were seduced and sucker punched last night by a depleted, determined Sparta Prague. The defeat ranks as the second worst home defeat in the club’s history, falling behind the 5-0 thrashing that Paris Saint-Germain gave Brendan Rodgers’ side in 2017.

The nature of this defeat was sore, very sore. Celtic conceded four goals at home to a Sparta side that travelled without seven first team players due to COVID-19. The Czech side were also only playing Europa League football as their domestic season was suspended due to a spike in virus infections.

Celtic had no excuses, the performances was desperate and almost unbelievable. Prague joined Copenhagen, Ferencvaros, Cluj and Rangers of turning up at Celtic Park and not believing their lack at the lack of quality from Neil Lennon’s side. For the avoidance of doubt, these are not incredible teams, they are competent and well-drilled allowing Celtic’s game management disaster’s to leave Celtic Park with victory.

Shane Duffy is one player that has been criticised for his performances of late but he has been hung out to dry, the injuries that have hampered the defence have meant that he hasn’t been able to take a step out of the firing line – even for a minute.

Callum McGregor was singled out for his recovery run and weak defending in two of the goals last night. Can Lennon and the club expect him to be ‘on it’ every game for 50 plus games a season, excluding internationals? There must be squad management, allowing players to get fit and stay fit.

Another key issue is the goalkeeper position. Scott Bain is a worthy number two, a reliable pair of gloves and competent cup goalkeeper. Vasilis Barkas is yet to justify his fee and the manager has decided to bench him.

This wasn’t Cavani, Mbappe and Neymar this was a team that was missing SEVEN first team players. Celtic should have respected them, yes, but they should have done their homework and known where they would be attacked and try and nullify these potential exposures.

Sunday will be an enormous test and if there are anymore points dropped then it feels a managerial change is inevitable.

Celtic’s 4-1 humbling by Sparta Prague represents a 15-year European nadir

It was like watching the baddest of bad 1980s Celtic teams in Europe to witness Neil Lennon’s men being humbled 4-1 by Sparta Prague on a horrific night.

https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/celtic/celtics-4-1-humbling-sparta-prague-represents-15-year-european-nadir-3027059

Shambolic doesn’t begin to describe it. Celtic looked entirely out of their depth as they were effectively sent spinning out of contention in their Europa League group … which is only at the halfway stage. The drubbing is the club’s most abject showing on the continent since their 5-0 defeat away to Artmedia Bratislava 15 years ago. The inquests will be corruscating for Lennon and his players. And so they should be on an evening when Lukas Julis became the first visiting player to net a hat-trick at Celtic Park since Eric Black in 1983.

Lennon’s men have now only one win in six and have lost their past three European games at Celtic Park. Against the Czechs they, frankly, lost all credibility on the continental stage. Just as well Celtic Park was bereft of spectators. Punters would have been in flaming-torch-and-pitchfork mood at the end of this sorry encounter.

The home side were laughably inept defensively. A fatal flaw, but only one of an array. They lacked any semblance of the cohesion, technique, sharpness and discipline of visitors supposed to be easy meat for the Scottish champions through missing half a dozen players to a virulent Covid-19 outbreak in their country that has meant their league had been shutdown for the past month. Instead it was Lennon’s men that were chopped liver. Or offal, if you will. Truly awful.

Celtic were so shapeless and soft that the concession of only four goals – two of them to give the Prague side a 2-0 half-time lead – represented them getting off lightly. For Sparta also hit the goal-frame three times, as they made good on coach Vaclav Kotal’s prediction that Celtic would be easier to play against than other Group H teams AC Milan and Lille who they had conceded seven goals against in two heavy losses.

It was buttock-clenching defending that cost them the 26th minute opener. As the Celtic backline played statues, Julis slammed in after David Hancko headed off the post from a corner. Julis’ second, on the stroke of the interval, was another series of hideously poor decisions. A cross that found Jeremie Frimpong nowhere after a run upfield, was backheaded away by Scott Brown only into the path Adam Caberick. He touched to Julis, and he finished with style.

The second half fightback from Celtic shouldn’t be overstated. Yes, they dominated possession and pulled a goal back through Leigh Griffiths in 65 minutes – only five minutes after he had been introduced – who pounced to tuck away a rebound from a Tom Rogic shot that had been saved. But they were opened up all too easily for Julis’ third from a 76th minute breakaway, and had utterly given up the ghost when Ladislav Krecji added a fourth in added time.

Celtic: Bain; Frimpong, Duffy, Bitton, Laxalt (Ntcham 80); Brown (Elhamed 60), McGregor; Christie, Rogic, Elyounoussi (Griffiths 60); Edouard (Ajeti 80).

Sparta Prague: Nita; Pletchaty, Pavelka, Hancko (Lischka 72); Polidar, Karabec (Travnik 72), Polidar (Krejci 79), Sacek, Windheim: Julis, Moberg-Karlsson (Plavsic 88).

Celtic suffered a third successive home defeat for the first time in 30 years with a humiliating Europa League Group H collapse against Sparta Prague.

The Czech side arrived decimated by injuries and illness while also lacking match practice given their domestic league has been suspended.

But Lukas Julis’ hat-trick and a goal from Ladislav Krejci secured a deserved win, with Leigh Griffiths replying.

It leaves Neil Lennon’s side bottom with one point from three games.

Celtic last lost three consecutive home games at the turn of the year during the 1989-90 season and they have now lost three Europa League home games on the bounce for the first time.

Three is also a significant number for Sparta – the Czech side making it a trio of wins in Europe on their visits to Scottish sides having previously beaten Airdrieonians and Heart of Midlothian.

Lennon laments lack of ‘hunger and application’

    Reaction & as it happened

Celtic began the game as you would expect from a side who had looked untroubled as they marched into the delayed 2019-20 Scottish Cup final by swotting aside the challenge of Aberdeen.

Sparta’s early nervousness, meanwhile, epitomised a team arriving on the back of heavy defeats by Lille and AC Milan – their only match in a month with a Covid-19 lockdown disrupting their domestic fixtures – and with only four players retained from last week’s loss in Italy.

However, after Odsonne Edouard and Mohamed Elyounoussi passed up early shooting chances for the hosts, the Czech side burst into life, largely inspired by a player who Kilmarnock fans might remember in a short loan spell from Sunderland in 2014.

David Moberg Karlsson’s speed of leg and thought forced a block by goalkeeper Scott Bain and the Sweden winger then sent a thunderous drive off the junction of bar and post.

When Bain touched a Julis shot over the crossbar, it was a warning that Celtic failed to heed as Karlsson’s corner was headed against the post by David Hancko, the on-loan Fiorentina centre-half making his first appearance of the season following injury, and Julis fired the rebound into the roof of the net.

Group H table

An Elyounoussi toe-poke clipped the top of the Sparta crossbar, but Karlsson was soon dashing to the opposite by-line and his cross was finished by a neat Julis side-foot after 17-year-old Adam Karabec pounced on a poor Scott Brown clearing header.

When a Michal Sacek drive came off the inside of a Celtic post after the break and substitute Griffiths got a goal back moments later after goalkeeper Florin Nita parried from Tom Rogic, it looked like a comeback was on.

However, Karlsson turned Shane Duffy inside out before setting up Julis in front of goal and substitute Ladislav Krejci’s header rubbed late salt into Celtic’s wounds.

What did we learn?

Having gone into Sunday’s Scottish Cup semi-final on the back of four games without a win, the ease of that defeat of Aberdeen appears to have been an aberration rather than a turning of the tide.

Manager Lennon had described the criticism he and his side had received before the Hampden game as hysterical, but he should be bracing himself for more of the same after such an abject performance.

Sparta looked to be the weakest link in Group H, but this victory for the under-strength Czech league leaders suggests Celtic might struggle to lift themselves off the foot of the table never mind qualify for the knock-out stage.

What the stats say

After a winless run of five Europa League games (D1 L4), Sparta Prague registered their first win in the competition since a 1-0 win over Southampton in November 2016.

Excluding qualifiers, this was only the third time Celtic have shipped four goals in a home European match, also doing so in September 1989 (5-4 win over FK Partizan, Cup Winners’ Cup) and September 2017 (0-5 defeat to PSG, Champions League).

Sparta Prague’s Lukas Julis ended a run of 12 Europa League matches without a goal, netting his first goals since March 2016 in a last-16 match v Lazio.

Leigh Griffiths’ three Europa League goals for Celtic have all come at Celtic Park in the group stages – also versus Fenerbahce (October 2015) and Rosenborg (September 2018).

Sparta Prague forward Julis became the first player to score an away European hat-trick against Celtic.

What’s next?

Celtic visit Motherwell and Hibernian before the return game against Sparta, who restart their domestic league on Sunday. Lennon will now concentrate on reversing the slide in form that will have many questioning their ability to secure that historic 10th Scottish title in a row.
