Trivia
- Kick-off: 12pm
- Poppy Season starts again, usual nonsense expected.
- Lennon under the cosh following disastrous run in notable games of late. Every game turned into a must-win game.
- Elyounoussi bags hat-trick as he and Celtic answer critics. Paul Lambert has accused Moi Elyounoussi of “letting the great Jock Stein down” after the Norwegian international was caught on his phone during Celtic’s shock Europa League defeat to Sparta Prague.
- Brutal challenge on Frimpong almost broke his leg! Caught high on the knee by a reckless studs-up challenge from Devante Cole that earned just a yellow card. To be assessed for possible ankle ligament damage the next day.
- Celtic defence still not convincing, and another goal lost from a set-piece! Could have been two lost from set-pieces.
- Neil Lennon has revealed details of a crisis meeting with his squad on Saturday morning to clear the air following their Europa League humiliation against Sparta Prague.
- Former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie believes his old club could bring in another goalkeeper in January to replace Vasilis Barkas. Premature, and unfair.
- Ex-Celt Paul Lambert: “the hysteria around Celtic’s dip in form and pursuit of 10-in-a-row is over the top”.
- US: Presidential elections are over after very dramatic week. Joe Biden/Democrats won over incumbent Republican/Donald Trump. Joe Biden is of Irish Catholic descent and is a devoutly practicing Catholic, and his codename is ‘Celtic’! Kamala Harris (the VP) is the first female & ethnic minority (Black & Asian) descent person to hold the position. History made.
- International Break next week, totally unwanted by many in Celtic support, and should be scrapped due to the COVID crisis.
- Report: Husein Balic, a lightning-quick Austrian winger who was a target of Celtic this summer, is drawing interest from Southampton and Brentfords
- Chris Sutton has tipped Brendan Rodgers to take over at Manchester City next summer if the Etihad club fail to agree a new contract with Pep Guardiola, whose deal expires at the end of the current campaign.
Summary
After all the criticism (no matter how justified), credit to Lennon for today. Some issues but can’t argue with 4-1 win after all the difficulties of late.
AP on Twitter: Usual 2nd half defensive frailties showing. Even without Duffy. Whatever the problems are we are allowing too many chances to all levels of team. Still look so disjointed and play too far apart at times
Phil Gordon (Journo): It shouldn’t need James McFadden to confirm this, but at least it removes any bias when he says Devante Cole’s tackle on Jeremy Frimpong was a red card. It was a red all day long.
Neil Lennon: “Moi was excellent. He’s a quality player. Just need more consistency from him but he’s quality”.
(Jimmy Mac of KDS)
In any other season, a 4-1 win away from home after a European match would have been a great result. For me it is spoiled as the defensive frailness is still there and the performance was only in patches. I really wanted to see a 90 minute dominant performance.
Going forward we looked sharper and out with the 4 goals, there were a few nearly moments that could have led to more goals. The players looked “hungry” to win and chased balls and won back possession (a fair few times after slack play). So no commitment issues today. Rogic was sublime at times and Moi showed a commitment and energy that has been lacking. Hats off to him as it showed he was wanting to make amends following the incident on Thursday. Laxalt is a stand out in terms of quality, I just wish he wouldn’t vacate his position so often.
Worryingly, we had a 25 minute spell, straight after half time, where we looked flat on our feet. Whether it was the fragile confidence or fitness, Lennon waited far too long to change things around and we were lucky not to concede more goals. At other points in the game, we relied on individuals putting last ditch blocks / tackles which against Motherwell is alarming.
The jury is still well and truly out at the moment.

Celtic dampen the noise around Neil Lennon as 4-1 victory at Motherwell earns breathing space
There will be no-one at Celtic fooled into thinking a, relatively, straightforward 4-1 victory at Motherwell is a panacea for all the Scottish champions’ ills.
By Andrew Smith
Sunday, 8th November 2020, 6:00 pm
Crucially, though, a victory underpinned by a Mohamed Elyounoussi hat-trick affords what Neil Lennon and his team needs most: some breathing space. It buys him time to remedy the maladies that have afflicted his team for so much of this season without dealing with an ever-more deafening chorus calling him out.
Going into the international break, had Lennon’s team failed to claim only a second win in seven games, there would have been fears about the impact of the decibel levels from the increasing ranks of the discontented. Ultimately, Celtic did so with a bit to spare, even allowing for once again displaying jitteriness in a defence that did not feature Shane Duffy from the first whistle.
Celtic: Get the latest team news, match previews and reports
There was the drive, aggression and attacking elan that put the display in a different stratosphere from the shambolic and soulless performance that resulted in a 4-1 thumping from Sparta Prague on Thursday. Lennon maintained he got the basics of hunger, humility and application that were posted missing in the horrendous Europa League encounter. It is hard to argue with the assessment, even if there were dips and dodgy moments. Some among the Celtic faithful have hardened their hearts against Lennon, though, that they will still find plenty to fault.

Elyounoussi rings thrice
Celtc cyberspace was pinging with quips that Elyounoussi couldn’t be accused of phoning it in at Fir Park, after being embroiled in mobilegate this week. It wasn’t a good look for him to be pictured on his device in the stand following his substitution on Thursday, but the reaction to it was hugely over the top.
The on-loan Southampton attacker’s triple takes his tally for this campaign to 11 goals and places him firmly out in front as the club’s top scorer. The movement and impetus he provides in the final third, allied to the vision and weaving of Tom Rogic, certainly supplied Celtic with oil to fire up the final-third fluency that has proved elusive too often of late.
The Norwegian said he was determined to show following his phone error that his attitude and commitment did not warrant being questioned. He certainly made good on that aim in demonstrating his appetite for the fray within eight minutes, when he pounced in lethal fashion to drill the ball in after a shot on the turn from Albian Ajeti had rebounded off the inside of the post. His second, to make it 2-0 on the half hour mark, was all about Rogic’s lovely footwork with the Australian skipping round three men on the right hand byline and delivering a perfectly-weighted cutback that Elyounoussi stroked into the far corner.
The 76th minute response to Motherwell pulling a goal back four minutes earlier that allowed Elyounoussi to walk away with the matchball, showed the forward’s versatility. A slight figure, there was force and finesse in his snapping neck muscles to head in a Hatem Abd Elhamed delivery from the right. It ensured there would be no comeback from the home side, late replacement Oliver Ntcham picking his spot for an 84th minute fourth goal after Elyounoussi and fellow substitute Odsonne Edouard opened the home side up down the left.
The Duffy difference
It would be easy to overstate the impact of Duffy’s omission from the starting line-up at Fir Park. With Krisoffer Ajer partnering Nir Bitton at the heart of defence before a recurrence of the Norwegian’s recent groin problem forced Duffy to replace him late on, Celtic still betrayed a vulnerability from balls into the box.
As Motherwell applied pressure in the second period, some of their penalty area defending was harem-scarem. And it was no surprise when Declan Gallagher drifted in a header from a free-kick to make it 2-1 in 72 minutes, which crept past Scott Bain at the right-hand post. No trust can be placed in Celtic’s defensive unit, and that will remain a worry for Lennon.
Battling Brown
Celtic captain Scott Brown, like his manager, has been scapegoated to a ridiculous degree for the Parkhead side’s shortcomings in the past three months. He has even been accused of dragging down his deep-lying midfielder partner Callum McGregor. The strong showing from Brown at Fir Park, where he was forceful and snapping into challenges, could be perceived as riposte to his detractors. The 35-year-old has not hit the heights of previous seasons, but that could be said of practically all around him in Celtic colours.
Indeed, that McGregor once more didn’t get a grip on proceedings that would have previously been a given for a performer of his undoubted talents, could be construed as significant. The Scotland international looks like a man who has struggled to peak regularly on the back of three seasons where he has played so much football. He just looks as if he might be overplayed right now, but with huge fixtures coming up for Steve Clarke’s Scotland side in the coming week, particularly the Euro 2020 play-off in Serbia on Thursday, the likelihood of further mental and physical fatigue may prove unavoidable.

Celtic star Moi Elyounoussi let ‘Jock Stein down’ by being on his phone, blasts Paul Lambert
26 comments
Paul Lambert has accused Moi Elyounoussi of “letting the great Jock Stein down” after the Norwegian international was caught on his phone during Celtic’s shock Europa League defeat to Sparta Prague.
The Hoops fell to a 4-1 loss at Parkhead on Thursday and during the late stages of the match the BT Sport cameras caught Elyounoussi on his mobile.
The 26-year-old has since apologised saying: “First of all, this is unacceptable from me.
“I have talked to both the coach and the captain and the case is dead between us.
“The phone is just out of pocket. I have warnings from Milan-Lille, the second match in our group, and I just wanted to check the result in that match.
“In any case, it is stupid of me to put myself in that situation. I lie down and take the punishment I’ll now possibly get.”
But Hoops hero Lambert believes the damage has already been done.
He told BBC Sportsound: “If you don’t change the players, sometimes they will change you.
“There’s something obviously wrong if Neil said that [about changing the culture].
“We played in an era where we were very strong.
“I look at the lad Elyounoussi on his phone and you are letting the great Jock Stein down, you are letting the Lisbon Lions down.
“That will absolutely rile him, because I know the way Lenny was as a player.
“You are letting your team-mates down, they are out there getting a chasing.
“You have to get the ones out who you think are going to let you down.
“I don’t know all the Celtic guys, I only know Scott Brown, the lad [Callum] McGregor, the good guys who will run through a wall for you.
“But if they are not, then you have to move them on.
“If that is the case he has to move them, or they will change you.
“The football club is too big to accept that, they don’t have a divine right to win everything.
“If there are factions and disharmony in a dressing room then it is a really dangerous thing.”

Mohamed Elyounoussi’s hat-trick helped ease the pressure on himself and second-top Celtic as they brushed aside Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership.
The on-loan Southampton winger had been criticised for being caught on his phone after being substituted in the 4-1 Europa League loss to Sparta Prague.
But two early finishes steadied the ship and his third came after Well’s Declan Gallagher reduced the arrears.
Olivier Ntcham’s late strike ensured a comprehensive win.
Celtic had arrived at Fir Park having won only once in six games and with some fans calling for manager Neil Lennon to be sacked.
But they left with a seventh win in a row against their seventh-placed hosts, who have now not beaten Celtic in 19 meetings, and having narrowed the gap to six points behind Rangers, who host Hamilton Academical in Sunday’s later kick-off.
Reaction & as it happened
Celtic last failed to win three consecutive league games in November 2012 and a repeat would have added further pressure on Lennon and given Rangers even greater hope that they could prevent their city rivals winning a historic 10th league title in a row.
Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson talked confidently ahead of kick-off – and no wonder considering his side had won four of the previous five league games and were seeking a third consecutive victory.
However, they were immediately on the back foot after Liam Polworth hesitated under a Ryan Christie challenge, the ball broke to Albian Ajeti and, when the striker’s shot came off the far post, Elyounoussi was first to react and prod home.
Tom Rogic has also had his critics, but the Australia midfielder looked more like his old self as he thrust into the penalty box before setting up Elyounoussi for an easy finish.
Motherwell will argue that they ought to have been given the chance to level from the penalty spot before that second goal after visiting captain Scott Brown’s clumsy challenge felled striker Callum Lang.
While Ryan Christie and Jeremie Frimpong went close to extending Celtic’s lead, the home side will also point to goalline stops from Diego Laxalt that denied Gallagher and Lang, who then blocked a goal-bound effort from team-mate Tony Watt.
Motherwell, though, were fortunate to finish with 11 men after striker Devante Cole escaped with a yellow card for a studs-first challenge that forced left-back Frimpong off with a thigh injury.
As it was, Gallagher exposed Celtic’s recent set-piece frailty by rising above Nir Bitton to head home to spark a short but nervous four minutes for the visitors before Elyounoussi towered above Stephen O’Donnell to complete a hat-trick that goes some way to answering those who questioned his commitment in midweek.
Man of the match – Mohamed Elyounoussi

What did we learn?
The gap in class between Celtic and their hosts showed in the end, but Lennon’s side were a penalty claim and a couple of narrow escapes in defence away from a nervous finish.
Lennon had dropped Shane Duffy, the on-loan Brighton & Hove Albion centre-half, along with striker Odsonne Edouard, who has still to recover fully from a bout of Covid-19, but defensively his side still looked vulnerable at the back and there is room for improvement before the mini-crisis at Celtic Park subsides.
Especially so considering Motherwell’s manager Robinson has still to devise a gameplan capable of stopping Celtic scoring against his team.
Having started the day with the chance to move into fifth spot with victory, they end it having lost 25 goals in seven meetings with Celtic and with their recent revival coming to an abrupt and painful halt.
What did they say?
Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson: “I don’t think I’ve ever had as many chances against Celtic.
“We had a penalty appeal and two cleared off the line. There was a lot of good, positive stuff, but individual errors have cost us today. It’s a hard one to take, but if we play like that against other sides, I’m sure we will get results. Celtic had five chances and scored four, that’s the difference.”
Celtic manager Neil Lennon: “That was much better. We know that we let ourselves down on Thursday and we tried to iron out a few things in the last couple of days.”
What next?
Celtic face another tough test of their title credentials when they travel to Edinburgh to face fourth-placed Hibernian after the international break before having a chance to avenge that Europa League defeat away to Sparta. Meanwhile, Motherwell visit Perth to take on a St Johnstone team one place behind them on goal difference.
