Summary

“I don’t know if they’ve lost a bit of hunger,” Neil Lennon.

“When the manager starts to criticise in public the players it looks like a lost soul in the dressing room and players not taking the responsibility and the manager does not get the respect he should get.” – ex-Celt Ramon Vega

Twitter:

@LiamOHare:

As a player and a manager, Neil Lennon is in the history books as a Celtic legend. In our hour of need when Rodgers walked out, he stepped in and brought us two titles under immense pressure. But we’re now in freefall and a change needs to be made and fast. Time’s up.

@TCW:
That a Chief Executive paid in excess of £1M a year appointed someone to the most important job in the operation without even the pretence of a proper recruitment process to identify the best candidate is staggering, arrogant and ultimately negligent.

You don’t need to read the Rangers accounts to know their biggest asset is the complacency of the Celtic board.

Neil’s post-match interviews are sounding increasingly like exercises in self-preservation.

@TomEnglish:

Hibs almost pulled off a major win there. Another stumble by Celtic. Their grip on the title is loosening. A win for Rangers tomorrow and Celtic are in serious trouble, if they’re not already in serious trouble

(joebloggscity)

So is this the end for Neil Lennon, Celtic now 11pts behind Sevco, albeit with two games in hand.

Don’t let the scoreline obscure things, Celtic were dreadful, and a late belated fightback saw Celtic gain an argubably undeserved point. Two down with little gameplan & spirt, there’s few positives to take from this match. Laxalt was possibly the only one.  Ironically it was Brown who was worst culprit, conceding a very daft penalty.

Credit where credit is due, Hibs deserved the three points.

The bench looked clueless on how to turn things around, and Lennon’s post-match deflection of blame onto the players criticising ‘laziness’ seemed to be poor management.

If anything, after so many setbacks, you’ll struggle to find any Celtic supporters who now back Lennon in the job.

Late Celtic comeback won’t relieve pressure on Neil Lennon after 2-2 draw with Hibs

Alan Pattullo

Search called off in hunt for missing fishermen

I’m A Celebrity fans fume unexpected recap episode has ‘ruined’…

Neil Lennon had some justifiably strong words to say about the SFA’s handling of Under 21s players after David Turnbull was ruled out on the eve of this fixture following a positive Covid-19 test.

Neil Lennon holding a green ball © Celtic manager Neil Lennon consoles Scott Brown after the skipper was substituted during the 2-2 dra…

The problem for him is that not even Celtic fans will feel very sympathetic. Any complaints will now be interpreted as an attempt to construct a smokescreen to hide further evidence of the side’s now serious deficiencies. They have conceded 13 goals in 13 league games this season having lost only 19 in 30 during the last campaign.

A late two-goal comeback won’t necessarily provide Lennon with any respite. The injury time equaliser from Diego Laxalt thrashed high into the net might be a potentially huge goal in terms of the debate over the manager’s immediate future. But a 2-2 draw with Hibs, whatever the circumstances, won’t be regarded as acceptable by supporters very alert to the fact Rangers, who will have played two games more, can move 11 points clear as early as tomorrow against Aberdeen.

Celtic wore a new all-black strip. It seemed an appropriate colour to signify the bleak post-mortems this result will still prompt. With or without the pre-match drama over Turnbull, and irrespective of the comeback, this was bafflingly poor from the visitors. They had plenty of shots, just few that truly tested Ofir Marciano.

Lennon is entitled to expect more from what could reasonably be described as his current first choice XI – the curiously benched Odsonne Edouard apart. Albian Ajeti did precious little to justify his starting place. Replaced after 57 minutes, the fact he couldn’t even make it to the hour mark said it all.

Edouard hardly looked to be pawing the dirt in his hurry to come on, but he did illustrate why picking Ajeti over him is a very bold move in the relatively short time he was given. He twice forced good saves from Marciano before beating the ‘keeper with a well-taken penalty with 12 minutes left after Hibs skipper Paul Hanlon’s handball.

Hibs had earlier punished Celtic’s slovenly performance with two goals in the space of eight minutes near the start of the second half. Jamie Murphy steered home the rebound after Kevin Nisbet’s penalty – awarded for a needless Scott Brown push on Martin Boyle – was saved by Scott Bain.

Nisbet then atoned with a brilliant finish from wide on the left that, like Murphy’s effort, nestled in the net after hitting the far post. It took nothing more complicated than a long free-kick from Hibs to catch out the visitors’ defence

The Turnbull news dominated the pre-match conversation. Lennon, already unhappy with Steve Clarke for what the Celtic manager perceived as over-use of Ryan Christie, was furious, saying the club received very late notice.

That said, how big a part would Turnbull have played in any case? He has been seen only fleetingly. Lennon chose the same team that beat Motherwell 4-1 on their last outing. Turnbull remained on the bench that afternoon. If that result at Fir Park identified a Celtic side determined to take the fight to Rangers, this performance, which only came alive in the closing stages, and after Lennon switched to a back three following the introduction of Shane Duffy for Brown, raises more questions than answers.

Kevin Nisbet’s angled drive doubled Hibs’ lead

Kevin Nisbet’s angled drive doubled Hibs’ lead

Diego Laxalt lashed home an injury-time equaliser as champions Celtic fought back from 2-0 down in a dramatic Scottish Premiership draw at Hibernian.

But the latest blow to their title bid leaves Celtic eight points behind leaders Rangers with a game in hand.

Jamie Murphy rifled the second-half opener in off the post after Scott Bain saved a penalty from Kevin Nisbet, who doubled the lead via the same upright.

An Odsonne Edouard penalty halved the deficit amid a late Celtic siege.

Laxalt’s first Celtic goal scrambled a point but Neil Lennon’s men now have just one win in four league games.

Fourth-place Hibs missed the chance to move above Aberdeen, who face Rangers at Ibrox on Sunday.

    Reaction & as it happened

Despite the need to avoid further slip-ups in their pursuit of an unprecedented 10th successive title, Celtic didn’t rouse themselves until two goals behind in the closing stages.

The visitors dominated a scrappy first half but failed to turn their 70% possession into clear opportunities.

Buoyed by his recent Scotland heroics, Ryan Christie was the man looking to make things happen, almost breaking the deadlock shortly before half-time with a curling drive tipped wide. Mohamed Elyounoussi steamed in to meet the resulting corner and glanced a header past the post.

Hibs were gifted the chance of an opener early in the second half when Scott Brown clumsily barged into the back of Martin Boyle. Bain dived low to his right to save Nisbet’s penalty, but Murphy raced in to convert the rebound off the far post.

Seven minutes later it was 2-0 as Murphy’s head flick freed Nisbet down the left-hand channel and the striker arrowed his angled drive in via the upright.

Celtic finally began to show some urgency and Ofir Marciano twice denied substitute Edouard before the French striker tucked home from the spot after Paul McGinn’s handball.

The visitors kept pushing, with Christie and Tom Rogic having shots saved before Laxalt pounced on a loose ball in the box to thunder into the roof of the net.

There could have been a final twist at the other end but Sean Mackie was unable to keep his effort down as a pulsating finale ended in the spoils being shared.

Undeterred by his second penalty miss in succession, the Hibs striker was a constant menace and netted a superb goal

Undeterred by his second penalty miss in succession, the Hibs striker was a constant menace and netted a superb goal

What did we learn?

Neil Lennon looks no closer to solving the problems that have plagued Celtic all season. Hibs’ second goal again highlighted the champions’ defensive vulnerabilities and they were meek in forward areas until 20 minutes from time.

Hibs, in contrast, carried out their gameplan to perfection but will be frustrated at only collecting one point rather than three. After damaging recent defeats by Hearts and Aberdeen, this was a rousing response from Jack Ross’ team.

What did they say?

Frustration and pride for Ross after Hibs draw

Hibs head coach Jack Ross: “Our immediate emotion is frustration. We put so much into the game and then conceded an avoidable goal so late.

“But I’m proud of the players’ performance and it’s a day for dwelling on the positives.”

Celtic manager Neil Lennon: “It was exciting but I’m really disappointed with the goals we gave away.

“Totally unnecessary and I thought we had decent control of the game. We lacked that bit of oomph and the final ball is poor.”

Celtic’s ‘lazy’ defending angers Lennon

What’s next?

Hibs host St Johnstone in the Premiership on Tuesday (19:00 GMT) while Celtic are away to Sparta Prague on Europa League duty on Thursday (17:55).

Celtic: Neil Lennon ‘can’t defend’ his players after draw at Hibs

Celtic’s ‘lazy’ defending angers Lennon

Celtic manager Neil Lennon questioned his players’ hunger and said he “can’t defend” them after the 2-2 Scottish Premiership draw with Hibernian.

Odsonne Edouard and Diego Laxalt netted late on to scramble an away point.

But Celtic have won two of eight games in all competitions and will be 11 points behind leaders Rangers, albeit having played two matches fewer, if the Ibrox side defeat Aberdeen on Sunday.

“I don’t know if they’ve lost a bit of hunger,” said Lennon.

Celtic fight back for late draw

    Lennon unhappy Christie wasn’t rested

Holders Celtic face Ross County in cup

“We need to get that back and quickly. I saw plenty of it in the last 20 minutes but we gave ourselves too much to do to win the game.

“The pressure will pile up if we keep getting results like that. If there’s any criticism of the performance today, I can’t defend it. We’ll all have to accept it.”

Lennon was furious with his side’s defensive lapses, blaming a “brain-freeze” for falling 2-0 behind within seven second-half minutes.

Scott Brown’s needless barge on Martin Boyle conceded a penalty, with Jamie Murphy converting the rebound after Scott Bain saved from Kevin Nisbet.

And Nisbet added a second after capitalising on static Celtic defending.

“It was a really poor decision from Scott, I don’t know where that came from,” said Lennon. “And then an awful second goal. It was just lazy – a free header and then not tracking the run.

“We have to be far more on point with our defending and doing the nuts and bolts of the game well.

“Then for 25 minutes we found our mojo, played really well and got a point which is not enough. We need more. The players have to ask why we can’t put that together for 90 minutes. It’s a mindset thing more than anything else.”

“Not a good day for Celtic,” David Potter on the 2-2 draw at Easter Road

By David Potter        21 November, 2020 No Comments

Not a good day for Celtic! A draw was probably a fair result, for Celtic deserved something for their belated fight back, but we really could not afford this. We had to win to-day, and thus we find ourselves depending on the unreliable source of Aberdeen tomorrow to prevent us going further behind. 10IAR is now beginning to recede. It is not yet out of sight, but we are beginning to need glasses to see it. The fight back has to start soon.

Bobby Madden likes to give soft penalties. Scott Brown really should have known that and his challenge, although not dirty or vicious, was a bit clumsy and stupid. But Bobby also gave us a soft penalty (which I cannot honestly say that I would have given) and we got a lifeline, and then how great it was to see Diego Laxalt score our equaliser.

It was a good game to watch, and I am glad that I paid my £15 to Hibs TV to see it, and probably their service was better than Celtic TV’s although John Collins told us at the start that Diego Laxalt couldn’t play!

Where Celtic were badly at fault was in the first half. Nothing really happened at either end in that first boring 45 minutes, and that is not good enough for a Celtic team. The shooting in particular was poor. No doubt we will hear stuff about jet lag, exhaustion and empty stadia, but that really will not do. This is Celtic we are talking about! We really have to rise above everything, and that includes Internationals and coronavirus!

When we did start to fight back, Tommy Rogic, Ryan Christie, and Callum McGregor took more of a grip of the game, but I fear that we are really going to have to learn to live without Scott Brown who has performed brilliantly for many years but is maybe now coming to the end of the road. Elyounoussi I called El Enigma the last time, and nothing made me change my mind today. Just what is this guy’s problem? We know he has the ability. Why can’t we see this every week? I repeat, this is Celtic we are talking about.

Albian Ajeti I fear is slowly sinking into the Teemu Pukki and Derk Boerrigter school of under-performers. I had forgotten he was playing, and really Leigh Griffiths has to be deployed for longer. And how I wish Nir Bitton would defend for Celtic as well as he does for Israel!

So we really have to up the game! Let’s have a good FIRST half for a change! If there is an attitude problem, let the Manager name names and sort it out! There is still the potential there, but it is so frustrating to watch Celtic these days.

We now approach a very important and busy part of the season. I wish them well in Prague on Thursday, but frankly, the domestic season is more important. The next game is in the League Cup against Ross County. Now wouldn’t it be nice for us to GO to the League Cup final at the end February. It depends on Nicola Sturgeon, vaccinations and falling cases, of course, but it also depends on Celtic winning Cup ties. To be fair we have done well in Cup ties of late. Let us keep this up!
