Summary
Neil Lennon prior to the match:
“It doesn’t matter who we’re playing, it’s important we end this run of draws and defeats as soon as possible.”
Neil Lennon postmatch:
“Can I turn it around? Yes of course I can. Will I get the time to do it? Well I’ve already been told that the club are with me. I agree the results aren’t good enough. It will improve.”
Neil Lennon admitted he doesn’t fear anything after the latest Celtic disappointing, dropping points at home to St Johnstone. The Northern Irishman is adamant “it will improve” but unsure of whether that will be with or without him.
TheCelticWiki on Twitter:
“I hope no one goes to the ground. Lawwell and Desmond shouldn’t be gifted another opportunity for deflection and vilification.”
“The negligence shown by Dermot and Lawwell when appointing Neil Lennon was shocking. But it’s nothing compared to their negligence in keeping him.
InsideTheSPFL:
“Neil Lennon should’ve been sacked after the first 4-1 doing by Sparta, I could just about understand them keeping him for Motherwell but that International break was a proper chance to get a new man in and give him time, the continued refusal to act has cost them 3 competitions.”
Journo Jim Spence:
“Poor show from Saints. against Premiership strugglers……Davidson must go”
Peter Martin Twitter:
“It is now no longer about Neil Lennon as manager. It is about a board that has been guilty of complacency. A recruitment plan flawed and failed on more than a few signings. Ten in a row is now gone, the manager is to blame for on the field and the board off the pitch.”

“If there is going to be a change, so be it,” says Neil Lennon of Celtic post after latest lapse
Neil Lennon as good as conceded that his desire to stay in his post as Celtic manager could now be taken out of his hands following another abject outcome with the 1-1 draw at home to St Johnstone.

The draw extends a horrendous run to two wins in 12 games for a Parkheac club now 13-points adrift of Premiership leaders Rangers.
A change in Lennon seemed detactable as he conceded that the torturous nature of his Celtic team was a manifestation of them lacking in almost every department. Asked if he had a feeling his time might be up, he said: “I can’t answer than. I don’t want to pre-empt anything. I want to keep working to try and turn it around. We need a bit of swagger back in the team. It is missing at the minute. Some players aren’t fit enough and that has been the case for a long time. Some players are just not in good form. They need some respite at some stage and they need some support from me. But, again, it is a two way thing. The players have got to play better. We have tried everything we can to get the performances right.

“I understand [fans] frustrations, when we are not playing well, and not getting results. But there are ways and means, and some fans are more irate than others. But right now I agree with them that our performances don’t equal the quality that we have, and if that falls on me then so be it. If there is going to be a change, then so be it but I won’t stop working to get it right.”
Everything Lennon has tried has had no effect. Only six points from a possible 15 in a league campaign for the ages. Dumped out of both the League Cup and the Europa League. Unable to win at home, or keep clean sheets. This devastating slump has come across an abysmal 10-week period when they have been unrecognisable from the team that ahead of this season had claimed nine straight titles and a record 11 consecutive domestic honours.
Lennon was also asked if he would resign if he felt he couldn’t take the club any further. “That is a hypothetical question so I’m not going to answer it.” He was also asked if the previous backing he had received from the board would change on the back of a performance and result that really did feel like the last straw, on the back of the 35-game winning run in cup-tie having been brought to a close by Ross County a week earlier.
“I don’t think so. I don’t want it to change either. I want to keep working. I have got good people behind me. I just need to get the players back to the levels that they’re capable of. Do we look at our training? Do we look at our routines? Do we look at our set ups? We have analysed all those things to death. The players have to look at themselves as well. We are better than this. It is too tentative. The play is too tense. We are taking too many passes to get the ball forward and there is not enough quality in the final ball.”
Board Statement
By Celtic Football Club
In light of the ongoing speculation regarding the position of our football manager, Neil Lennon, the Board of Celtic Football Club wishes to make clear its continuing support for Neil and his backroom team.
The Board recognises and understands the importance of winning the league championship this season and that, as Neil himself has made clear, recent performances and results have been disappointing. The Board is committed to delivering success for Celtic supporters.
The Board has carefully considered the current circumstances and the challenges that we are faced with, not least the pressure on the management and players to deliver the tenth championship in a row that is so important to us all. Equally important is to continue to operate according to our Club’s values. The Board has come to the conclusion that our collective objective is best served by continuing to support Neil and his team as they seek solutions for those challenges.
Neil has the support of the players and staff at the Club. He understands the pressure and the environment. As his outstanding record as a manager, captain and player demonstrates, he knows what it takes to be successful at Celtic and he has delivered success with many of the current squad of players, who understand his method and approach.
Whilst it has been suggested that it is time for a change, at this stage in the season the Board believes that Neil and his management team are best placed to turn the team’s performances around and lead us on to success. The Board continues to work closely with Neil and his team to support them as they seek to do so and progress will be reviewed in the new year.
The Board wishes to take this opportunity to thank all Celtic supporters for their support during this challenging year. The response of the support to the challenges that we all face together has been magnificent. It is therefore important to make clear that the Board has never, as it has been inaccurately reported, referred to any Celtic supporter as ‘entitled’.
The Board recognises the range of views expressed by our supporters and the strength of those opinions. Whilst there may not always be agreement, there is certainly a common goal – the success of Celtic Football Club – and we will continue to work together to seek to achieve that success.
Draw for history-making St Johnstone against Celtic should surprise nobody
by Eric Nicolson

The St Johnstone players celebrate their opening goal from Chris Kane.
It really would be very unjust on any manager to lose his job after holding this St Johnstone side to a draw.
A history-making St Johnstone side, no less.
There have been some embarrassing, maybe even shameful, performances from Celtic over the course of the last couple of months but sharing the points with Callum Davidson’s team doesn’t deserve to be listed among them.
Saints are playing very well, have been since these sides last met at the start of October. They have now extended an unbeaten run to 11 for the first time as a top-flight club. Celtic are totally lacking in confidence.
Therefore, a 1-1 result should surprise nobody.
In fact, it took a fortuitous Mohamed Elyounoussi header to deny the Perth side all three points on 83 minutes – just four minutes after Chris Kane had opened the scoring.
You can add leaving Celtic Park with a feeling of what might have been to Callum Davidson’s accomplishments as an increasingly impressive football manager.
It was a pretty even first 15 minutes, with both sides having near misses.
For Saints, a Stevie May shot into the ground from a David Wotherspoon free-kick looked like it would have found the net had it not been for Nir Bitton being in the right place at the right time, heading clear at the post.
© SNS Group
Stevie May comes close early in the game.
Either side of that opportunity was an Odsonne Edouard shot that took a kind deflection into the arms of Zander Clark and a Tom Rogic free header that missed the target by half-a-yard.
This season Edouard has been a poor imitation of the striker so feared in Scotland – and Europe – in previous campaigns.
When he was put through on goal by Callum McGregor, threading a pass between Shaun Rooney and Danny McNamara, he really should have scored. Clark didn’t commit himself too early and in the end the Frenchman’s outside of the boot finish was a weak one and he saved quite comfortably.
Making use of Michael O’Halloran’s pace would have been a key pillar of Davidson’s game plan but the Saints boss had to come up with a plan B midway through the first half when his winger was forced off through injury as a result of a heavy challenge from Scott Brown.
© SNS Group
St Johnstone’s Michael O’Halloran goes off injured.
Kane was the replacement, taking up the loan striker role as May was switched out wide.
It was a credit to the substitute, and his team-mates, that Saints adjusted seamlessly.
Their shape remained compact, Celtic continued to struggle to build anything resembling momentum and the new number nine was getting the visitors up the pitch when the opportunity arose.
On one such occasion in stoppage-time he used his strength to occupy a couple of Hoops defenders and, as they waited for the referee to intervene, Ali McCann took advantage of the hesitation to pick up the loose ball, drive into the box and pick out May. Unfortunately, the Saints top scorer made a poor contact with his attempted sliding finish.
No Clark heroics were required in the first 45 but the Perth keeper had to make an outstanding reflex save eight minutes into the second one.
From an out-swinging corner the hosts won three headers in rapid succession, the last of them from Bitton at close-range. Clark only had a split-second to adjust his arms and keep it out.
The man who broke Saints hearts in the previous fixture between these teams, Leigh Griffiths, was sent on just before the hour mark.
He would have been disappointed that Edouard took a free-kick 20 yards from goal five minutes later, and even more disappointed that it was struck straight into the defensive wall.
Clark was called into action again on 76 minutes, this time to claw away a deflected David Turnbull strike low to his left.
The running total was now 33-1.
It was a save that looked even better moments later when Saints took the lead – their first goal in 12 matches against Celtic. The running total was now 33-1.
Scott Tanser slipped in May with a beautifully measured pass and the all-energy forward, by now in behind the home defence, squared the ball across the six-yard box into the sort of space strikers love to attack. And there was Kane to finish it off.
That Saints could only hold on to that hard-earned lead for four minutes, and that the scores were levelled with a header that probably wasn’t even meant as an attempt on goal, was hugely frustrating.
Ryan Christie had too much time to deliver an in-swinging left foot cross from the right and Elyounoussi had too much space to help the ball on. The next bit was sheer good/bad luck as it looped all the way over Clark and into the far corner of the net.
It was to the great credit of the McDiarmid Park men that Celtic didn’t come close to grabbing a winner. The game-management in the last 10 minutes was superb and 1-1 it finished.
One point, even against a Parkhead side in turmoil, represents an excellent afternoon’s work.
Celtic’s 10 is all but over. Saints’ 11 may keep on growing.
‘You ask me all these negative questions’: Neil Lennon bites back in BBC interview after latest Celtic frustration
Neil Lennon became irritated with “negative questions” being asked of him in a post-match interview with the BBC after watching his Celtic side drop points again in the Scottish Premiership.
By Craig Fowler
Sunday, 6th December 2020, 8:21 pm
The Scottish Premiership champions had to settle for a draw after Mohamed Elyounoussi cancelled out Chris Kane’s opener for St Johnstone on Sunday afternoon.
The result leaves Lennon’s side 13 points behind rivals Rangers, albeit with two games in hand, as supporter frustration grows with the under-performing manager and the club’s board.
Celtic: Get the latest team news, match previews and reports
Celtic haven’t won any of their previous five matches at home, including losing their domestic dominance with last weekend’s Betfred Cup exit to Ross County.
Despite this, Lennon remains defiant that he is the right man for the job and didn’t take too kindly to being asked by report Kheredine Idessane if he had any fear that he was about to get the sack.
Lennon said: “I don’t fear anything. You ask me all these negative questions Kheradine and about my job.
“The club have already came out this week and said that they’ve backed me. I mean what more do you want them to do? I agree, the results aren’t good enough.
“It will improve, I’ve no question of that. Whether it’s on me or not then we’ll have to wait and see. But I can’t answer the questions that you’re asking.”
Once again supporters protested outside of the ground after the game with a video showing supporters storming and throwing objects at the team bus as it tried to leave the ground.
Deathly Celtic Park a graveyard for Neil Lennon
The emptiness that will have been felt by Neil Lennon over yet another humbling home experience courtesy failure to win a fifth straight game at Celtic Park could be considered apposite.
By Andrew Smith

HAVE YOUR SAY
It is difficult to envisage how the 1-1 draw with St Johnstone does not become the tombstone for Lennon’s second spell in charge of Celtic. And in this season of spectacular collapse for the club as they prove unable to mount a sustained challenge for storied 10-in-a-row, the Parkhead citadel has become a ghostly graveyard littered with such memorials.
Lennon and his charges are considered fortunate that Covid-19 restrictions over spectators have spared them mullerings for a litany of lifeless performances in their own backyard. Yet, it is to be questioned whether they would have performed so soullessly had their been the crackle from capacity crowds instead of the eerie, bleak ambience that has enveloped the cavernous stadium in this unprecedented season.
Celtic: Get the latest team news, match previews and reports
It is stark to consider that it is 62 years since the club last failed to win in five consecutive home games as has befallen them now. Moreover, for all that they are now 13 points adrift of Rangers, their on;y league loss remains the derby defeat at Celtic Park on the start of October.
Lennon’s position looks untenable because Celtic’s prospects in four competitions effectively have ended in their own path. It is inconceivable how they turn it around in the championship following the failure to beat the Perth club. A week earlier their hopes of continuing the most concerted run of trophy gathering in Scottish football ended with the League Cup loss at Celtic Park against Ross County – which brought to a close the 35-game record sequence of straight domestic cup-tie successes.
In addition, the excruciating 4-1 flailing by Sparta Prague in Glasgow’s east end last month wasn’t only the breaking point for hopes of progression from their Europa League group hopes, it represented the most egregious home performance in 58 years competing in continental competition. All of this after the first blow-out in a season that has blown up on Lennon and the club came with the 2-1 defeat at home to Ferencvaros in August that meant Celtic would exit in the qualifying stages for the Champions League for a third straight season.

Highlights: Celtic 1-1 St Johnstone
The pressure on manager Neil Lennon intensified further as his faltering Celtic fell 13 points behind Premiership leaders Rangers with a draw against St Johnstone in Glasgow.
The visitors went ahead when Chris Kane slid home Stevie May’s cross but Mohamed Elyounoussi’s header restored parity with seven minutes remaining.
It now means Lennon’s men, who have two games in hand, have won just two of their past 12 games and are also winless at home since the middle of September.
Fans protested outside Celtic Park last weekend following defeat by Ross County in the League Cup, triggering club chief executive Peter Lawwell to back his manager in a statement on Tuesday.
However, this stalemate means his side have now dropped nine points in five league games.
Callum Davidson’s Saints, now undefeated in 11 matches over 90 minutes, move level on points with seventh-place Kilmarnock.
Reaction & as it happened
‘Can I turn it around? Of course I can’ – Lennon defiant as Celtic fail to win again
Rangers thrash Ross County
It was a day of big numbers for Celtic as captain Scott Brown made his 600th appearance for the club, McGregor his 300th and Lennon himself marked 20 years since he first joined Celtic as a player.
But the stat that mattered most to the home side was whether they could register a win.
They set about doing that with Odsonne Edouard playing a one-two with Tom Rogic and getting away a shot that took a nick off a Saints defender before goalkeeper Zander Clark gathered.
Rogic should have hit the target with a header after Christopher Jullien nodded Ryan Christie’s free-kick back into a busy area.
Edouard did find his mark with a shot off McGregor’s through ball but Clark was well positioned to save and McGregor’s rebound effort was wayward.
Chris Kane scores for St Johnstone against Celtic
Kane forced in St Johnstone’s opener in the 79th minute
St Johnstone, having travelled to Glasgow unbeaten in five league games, posed the hosts problems through a volley from May that was headed away by Nir Bitton near the goal line and another effort from the striker that fizzed across the face of goal.
Bitton tried to usher the ball over the line at a corner in the second half but Clark was alert again and the Perth side were soon in front.
Kane had replaced the injured Michael O’Halloran in the first half and he was left free to convert May’s dangerous cross after Celtic failed to clear their lines at a free-kick.
Edouard forced another save from Clark as the hosts toiled but moments later Christie’s cross was headed backwards by Elyounoussi and Celtic had a quick equaliser.
Further efforts came in from Turnbull, Christie and Elyonoussi as the home side chased victory but St Johnstone held out.
Man of the match – Zander Clark
St Johnstone goalkeeper Zander Clark makes a save to deny Celtic’s Nir Bitton
Clark’s crucial saves gave him the edge over his outfield colleagues, who also excelled
What did we learn?
Celtic have flitted between three and four at the back this season and Lennon re-established a 3-5-2 for the visit of Saints.
Defensively, the home side did not give up as many chances as they had in recent matches but the expected width did not materialise, once again emphasising the gap left by the absent James Forrest.
Distribution was poor and creativity lacking from Celtic, which only encouraged a well-drilled St Johnstone side.
For their part, Saints were not just organised, they carried a threat even before their opener and were good value for a point.
What did they say?
Celtic results ‘aren’t good enough’ – Lennon
Celtic manager Neil Lennon: “I’m really disappointed with the result and aspects of the performance. We dominated the game possession-wise again but we looked tentative. I understand that to a certain degree but they need to rise above that.
“For me we’re not working the goalkeeper anywhere near enough. There’s a lack of speed in our play, lack of movement. And we can’t keep a clean sheet.”
St Johnstone manager Callum Davidson: “The players were tremendous. They worked unbelievably hard off a good shape. We had a wee bit of sustained pressure when we got the goal.
“Could we hang on for the victory? Unfortunately we didn’t but I’m really proud of my players. I’ll take the draw. It’s what we deserve with our efforts and application.”
Davidson proud of ‘tremendous’ Saints
