Summary
“Today was a perfect example of all the work we’ve done over the last month coming together in one game.”
John Kennedy
(jbc of thecelticwiki)
Nice change for Celtic to have a comprehensive victory, and having not defeated Livvie all season, it wasn’t a given that Celtic would win.
Concern over Forrest as he just returned and went off injured. Ely had a MOTM game and grabbed goals.
To give John Kennedy some due, after a shakey start the team is playing better albeit with less pressure now as title race is over, and he has grown into the role. He deserves respect for that, and speaks well whenever in interviews both pre & post match. But nobody is convinced he’s a good choice for the full role, and so far undefeated.
(Etims)
Domestically this so far IMO is the best fitba we’ve played all season. Crisp, fast accurate passing and really good movement. Final touch stopped us being out of sight. Compare & contrast to games 2 months ago v Livvy. More of the same please
(Baggio on KDS)
Performance was a huge improvement on what we’ve seen under Lennon. It’s basically down to having some sort of a game plan and having players playing in a formation that suits them. Very simple stuff that our previous manager somehow didn’t understand.
This are the sort of performances and results we should be getting. We’ve now conceded 1 goal in 5 games, the Huns were getting praised from all angles for this but with the standard of opposition, this should be the case for both teams.
There’s obviously still issues with this team, our full backs are very pedestrian and we’re still getting poor performances from the likes of McGregor but we can get away with it against SPFL sides.

Fireworks on and off pitch as silky Celtic send message to Rangers with six of the best
Fireworks off the pitch, and fireworks on it. Celtic put in one of their best performances of the season against Livingston to get them in the best possible shape for next weekend’s Scottish Cup clash with Rangers.
By Mark Atkinson
Saturday, 10th April 2021, 5:01 pm
James Forrest celebrates opening the scoring for Celtic against Livingston.
The match started with a one-minute silence for Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh that was cut short by some loud pyrotechnics outside Celtic Park. Inside the ground, Celtic sparkled with some illuminating football. They sent Livingston a 6-0 rocket but had the scoreline been higher, nobody would have complained.
Some will say that this Premiership display was too little, too late given that Rangers already have the title in their hands. They would be right. But with the Scottish Cup Celtic’s last chance of making sure they have silverware to mark this so-far troubled season, it is imperative that they head to Ibrox for the fourth-round tie in the best possible shape. They are not far away from that.

The only negative for interim manager John Kennedy was an injury to James Forrest. Celtic are a different team with the talismanic 29-year-old. Playing on the right of a diamond, his surging runs and intelligence in linking up with those around him invigorates them. He opened the scoring and caused a fair amount of carnage, only to be quickly subbed on 59 minutes with a worrying-looking injury. This was his first league start in six months, and any spell on the sidelines would be savage blow to player, club and country.
Kennedy’s starting XI looked, on paper, his strongest. He made four changes to their starting XI. In came Greg Taylor, Callum McGregor, Mohamed Elyounoussi and Odsonne Edouard, with Diego Laxalt, Tom Rogic, Ryan Christie and Leigh Griffiths dropping out from the team that defeated Falkirk 3-0 on Scottish Cup duty.
The system is a 4-1-2-1-2 that can morph into a 4-2-3-1, with Scott Brown anchoring the midfield and allowing McGregor and David Turnbull to get forward and support the attack. While not completely in his pomp, Edouard was a right handful for Livingston’s centre-backs Jack Fitzwater and Jon Guthrie. His strike partner Elyounoussi once again impressed with two goals – it could easily have been more – and this display lends weight to the on-loan Southampton attacker being kept on for another season.
Celtic’s problem since Kennedy was handed control was not creating chances but converting them. Not here. The finishing was pretty clinical, and the fluidity of their attack will give Rangers food for thought. This was the first time Celtic has racked up a two-goal advantage by half time since last December.
And what of Livingston? It feels like their season is petering out, with a top-four place now a very forlorn hope. That defeat to St Johnstone in the Betfred Cup final has knocked some of the stuffing out of them. The only positive they could take from a wretched afternoon was the late introduction of Alan Lithgow, his first game since December 2019 due to a serious hip injury.
How the match unfolded
With both teams keen to attack, the opening stages were open. Livingston had not come to Glasgow to sit in and with the pacey Alan Forrest supporting Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, they carried a threat without ever engineering a tangible chance.
Celtic were much more incisive, with the creativity and movement of Turnbull, Edouard, Elyounoussi, McGregor and James Forrest causing problems.
James Forrest did have the ball in the net after 20 minutes, but the offside flag was raised well before it found the net. He didn’t have to wait long, however.
The opening goal, right on the half-hour mark, was a masterclass in quick passing. Turnbull fired the ball into Edouard on the edge of the Livingston penalty box, the Frenchman clipped it into space for Forrest to run on to and as goalkeeper Robby McCrorie advanced, Forrest rolled it past him.
Imbued by the confidence of that strike, Celtic went in search of a second and duly got it eight minutes later. Greg Taylor and Elyounoussi powered down the left flank and the Norwegian’s cross, via a deflection, found Turnbull in the box and the midfielder had the simple task of kneeing home into an empty net.
Livingston looked well and truly on the ropes at this point, although just before the interval Alan Forrest was set free, but with the angle tight, his shot battered into the legs of a well-placed Scott Bain in the Celtic goal.
Livingston made a double substitution at half time as Josh Mullin and Matej Poplatnik but it did absolutely nothing to change the flow of this match.
McCrorie made two fine stops within minutes to deny Elyounoussi but, from a corner that came from the second of his blocks, the ball evaded him as his own defender, Jack Fitzwater, netted past him.
The next goal, on 54 minutes, was much prettier as Elyounoussi curled a shot from outside the box into the far corner. At this stage, you really feared for a punch-drunk Livingston.
Celtic’s fifth goal was crafted in Norway. Kris Ajer went on a bit of a mazy, slaloming past tired Livingston legs, and he found Elyounoussi in plenty of space. His deft little dink found the bottom corner. He was replaced, denying him a shot at the match-ball but keeping him fresh for harder challenges ahead.
That wasn’t the end of the scoring, however. Efe Ambrose, back at his old stomping ground, perplexingly passed the ball straight to Ryan Christie and he made no mistake for 6-0
Fist clenched at the full-time whistle, Kennedy – still unbeaten in his caretaker role – can look forward to next weekend with some optimism.
Celtic: Bain; Kenny, Welsh, Ajer, Taylor; Brown (Soro 75), McGregor; J Forrest (Christie 59), Turnbull (Rogic 68), Elyounoussi (Griffiths 75); Edouard (Ajeti 68).
Livingston: McCrorie; Devlin, Guthrie, Fitzwater, Longridge; A Forrest (Ambrose 67), Bartley (Diani 67), Sibbald (Mullin 46), Holt; Pittman; Emmanuel-Thomas (Poplatnik 46).
I enjoyed that today. For the first time in a long time. Bring on the Rangers

Up to the final whistle today I could count on one hand the number of times this season it’s actually been enjoyable to watch Celtic play.
27 September and a 3-0 home win to Hibs still stands out, as does the first half at least, but in truth the performance as a whole to hang on as a defensive unit, in the 2-2 draw in France against Lille in the Europa League should also be lauded. As should the 4-1 win against Motherwell at Fir Park in November that gave us all hope, as to an extent did the 3-2 return game against Lille at Celtic Park. All would ultimately prove false dawns as a season unravelled on the back of barely believable inconsistency.

After that the winter of discontent and displeasure kicked in. Today however those winter skies parted at long last, and on the field the spring sun shone on a 90-minute Celtic performance – remember those – against a top six team, one we’ve generally struggled to get passed, even in tip-top form.
Celtic 6 – Livingston 0 has a fine ring to it as a scoreline alone. Alongside that result however came a fantastic, constantly probing and flowing display of attacking football, up against a side who matched us man for man on the day and one that was beaten by the sheer inventiveness, persistence and class that has been threatened since John Kennedy took over from Neil Lennon as Interim manager, and a game where the final result, at long last, mirrored the endeavour and tactical improvements that have been evident in recent weeks.

John Kennedy has been bursting to play this formation, but has been denied through a lack of right sided width. The front three of Moi Elyounoussi –who surely has convinced even the most ardent of doubters now – Odsonne Edouard who enjoyed being surrounded by confident and creative sidekicks, and the much maligned James Forrest, ably supported behind by the advanced David Turnbull shone as an attacking troupe, one that we can all hope –and it will be hope after Forrest appeared to pick up a hamstring strain – can be reunited for next week’s Scottish Cup tie with theRangers, in a tournament with huge historical consequences for Celtic as the Celts look for an incredible fifth consecutive cup win.
Today saw what stretching a defence with runners in behind and genuine width can do to a packed defence. The movement from the front was short and sharp, whilst behind the attackers, the full backs, and independent of having to supply both the defensive cover and attacking intent, looked far more comfortable in a supporting role. Indeed, both Kenny and Taylor looked far steadier with a man in front of them rather than simply open ground.

Callum McGregor looked fresh and energetic linking central midfield to attack as a spare runner, and even the deeper sitting Scott Brown enjoyed his best game of the season as he managed to venture forward on occasion, even forcing an error for a goal.
Meanwhile in central defence both Ajer and Welsh looked a real partnership, evidenced with the game goalless as Welsh covered for what seemed an out of step Ajer when Livingston’s Emmanuel Thomas found space in Celtic’s box. In the end Ajer stretched enough to close down his misjudgement only to see Welsh covering perfectly for his colleague had the big Norwegian not quite bridge the gap. Where has this defensive discipline been all season?
Scott Bain it should also be recognised had two excellent saves to ensure Celtic kept the fourth clean sheet of John Kennedy’s time in charge, a spell with only one goal conceded and with eleven goals scored in the five games he’s been in charge. It may be a small sample size, yet considering we’ve only conceded one goal from a set piece –our Achilles heel all season – and conceded nothing from open play, it really has been more than a mere steadying of the ship John Kennedy and his players have pulled off since Neil Lennon’s resignation, a feat that really should be acknowledged.

Moi Elyounoussi and James Forrest will get the plaudits today and so they should, but John Kennedy and his incrementally improving Bhoys all deserve an immense amount of credit. The team and the support head to Ibrox next week brimming with confidence, yet if nothing else it was a joy just to watch a team play the Celtic way this afternoon. It’s been a long, long time since we could say that.

Celtic prepared for the Old Firm Scottish Cup tie with their biggest Premiership win of the season as they routed Livingston at home.
James Forrest and David Turnbull netted to reward first-half dominance.
A Jack Fitzwater own goal, a Mohamed Elyounoussi double and a late Ryan Christie finish sealed a convincing victory as Livingston capitulated.
There was an injury concern for Celtic as Forrest was forced off on his first league start since September.
Fifth-place Livingston remain four points clear of St Johnstone after a first defeat in three Premiership outings.
Having lost the league title to Rangers this season, Scottish Cup holders Celtic face Steven Gerrard’s side in the last 16 next Saturday.
Reaction & as it happened
Celtic’s disappointing season hinges on the trip to Ibrox, with their last chance of silverware at stake.
And interim manager John Kennedy’s men impressively took a grip of proceedings as Livingston’s early spark faded.
Celtic’s first effort on goal produced the opener on the half-hour. Forrest latched on to Odsonne Edouard’s lofted pass over the defence to poke a finish beyond Robby McCrorie and inside the near post.
Elyounoussi glanced a header wide from Jonjoe Kenny’s cross before turning provider. Greg Taylor released the Norwegian down the left and he hit the byeline to deliver a cross that took a deflection before dropping to Turnbull all alone to tap into the empty net.
Edouard was denied a goal by McCrorie’s legs before Livingston manager David Martindale made a double change at half-time – Josh Mullin and Matej Poplatnik on for Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and Craig Sibbald – in a bid to turn the tide.
But the floodgates had opened and Scott Brown’s diving header from a corner bounced off the unsuspecting Fitzwater to make it 3-0.
The overworked McCrorie was doing his best to keep the scoreline respectable amid a barrage of shots, but was helpless as Elyounoussi curled a superb strike into the far corner of the net.
Celtic’s joy was tempered as Forrest, in just his fourth appearance after a long-term ankle injury, limped off. Kennedy later explained the Scotland winger was withdrawn when he “felt his back stiffen up”.
The goals kept coming and the fifth was made in Norway as Kristoffer Ajer galloped forward from defence before playing in compatriot Elyounoussi to dink the ball over McCrorie.
Livingston’s miserable day was compounded when former Celtic defender Efe Ambrose sent a pass across his penalty box straight to Christie who accepted the invitation to tuck the ball home.

What did they say?
Celtic interim manager John Kennedy: “Once we found our groove we were always going to carry a threat. I’m just focusing on the team and how we can improve week on week. I think we’re seeing that in the performances now.
“Confidence is huge in football and the players have had a tough time this year. We’ve tried to rebuild that.”
Livingston manager David Martindale: “As bad as we were, Celtic were fantastic. That’s not a get-out for us. It’s probably the worst we’ve played in my seven years at this club.
“I’ve told the players in no uncertain terms it’s not good enough. We were all terrible today.”
What’s next?
Both sides are in Scottish Cup last-16 action next weekend. Celtic face Rangers away on Saturday (16:00) while Livingston take on Aberdeen at Pittodrie the following afternoon (14:00).
