Trivia

  • Scottish Cup Fourth Round match, played at Ibrox, 3pm Sunday on Premier tv sports channel
  • Sevco going for the double; Celtic were going for just this cup but then would be record five Scottish Cups in a row. Season over for Celtic, no trophies this season.
  • Celtic will end the season trophyless for the first time since 2009-10, it’s only the third time ending a campaign empty handed since the turn of the Millennium.
  • New Celtic chief exec starts tomorrow, Dom Mckay (transition period under Lawell)
  • Prince Philip husband of Queen of England etc died a week ago, funeral clashed with original match day and time (17th, 3pm). Match moved to Sunday 18th from Saturday 17th to avoid the clash.
  • John Kennedy unbeaten streak as interim manager ends.
  • 5 Sevco players that broke the law on the 13th of February by going to a house party, will now have an appeal hearing on the 20th of APRIL!! Conveniently after cup game. Disgrace.
  • John Kennedy called out the SFA over the inconsistencies, and delays, in their handling of the Covid-19 breaches by the Rangers five – and questioned Steven Gerrard’s appeal for Nathan Patterson on the basis of his talent. Kennedy cannot comprehend why the saga has become so protracted when, in August, Celtic and Aberdeen had two games immediately postponed and had bans issued within weeks subsequent to Boli Bolingoli’s failure to quarantine following an unauthorised a trip to Spain and eight players from the Pittodrie club attending a city centre bar.
  • Sevco announce a social media boycott claiming its due to anti racism stance, and then break it to give condolences to Prince Philip who died and has a very questionable history on race!
  • Patryk Klimala is close to completing a move to New York Red Bulls in the MLS. An offer was lodged which could see Celtic recoup the £3.5 million they paid for the Polish striker last January.
  • Celtic tied down Stephen Welsh to a new four-year contract.
  • Afghanistan: Even the Taliban want to know who the new Celtic manager will be, according to meeting between Belfast documentary maker Jamie Doran who interviewed some Taliban heads for Al jazeera TV and was taken aback (as were all of us) see https://belfastmedia.com/even-the-taliban-want-to-know-who-the-new-celtic-manager-will-be
  • M&S begins legal action against Aldi over Colin the Caterpillar cake!
  • Europe: 6 English clubs, 3 Spanish clubs & Italian clubs are set to announce the creation of a European Super League  – there would be no French nor German sides in the competition, UEFA crisis meeting ongoing.

Covid

  • England opening Up.

Summary

“It’s great to have that confidence and belief going into the Rangers game.”

John Kennedy before the match, it didn’t materialise but Celtic were their own worst enemies.

(below from various)

Like the bad old days under Liam Brady and Tommy Burns – we didn’t covert chances in these games  because we lacked bottle. We were mentally fragile. And now it’s like watching a bad movie from 1991 – frantic in front of goal with no real belief.

3 out of the 4 derbies Celtic will have generated more xG. Mental how poor we have been in the final 3rd.

‘Comedy’ fact of the day. Kenny’s own goal today, combined with the McGregor own goal in January, means that Celtic players have scored more goals for Rangers than against them this season.Obviously using ‘comedy’ in a ironic, scunnered, sell them all, kind of way.

Celtic too many players who don’t seem to want to be there. Missed big chances though. Massive overhaul required… Dominic McKay in tomorrow he needs to get to work fast… Responded in 2016 with Brendan Rodgers…

Too passive again. Shocking goals to concede. Looking to the bench there’s nothing that’s really going to change things thing I’d put Taylor on for Laxalt just on a point of principle though.

Edouards’ penalty miss was a disgrace. His technique seemed to like a player who had never taken one before. Taking in this KO game could have potentially ended in penalties, you’d have guessed the players would have practised this beforehand. Evidently not it seems.

The biggest disappointment for the Celtic board today is that it made their “Kennedy for manager” card unplayable.

How far and how fast have we fallen beggars belief. How has this happened and who is responsible?

Verdict: Rangers expose Celtic’s familiar flaws to close in on Scottish Cup glory

The transfer of power is complete. In a Scottish Cup fifth round tie which effectively summed up the whole season for both Old Firm clubs, Rangers followed up their dethroning of Celtic as Premiership champions by condemning their great rivals to a first trophy-free campaign for 11 years.

Steven Gerrard’s side weren’t at their absolute best for chunks of the afternoon but they didn’t need to be against opponents undone by familiar vulnerabilities at both ends of the pitch.

For Celtic’s new chief executive Dominic McKay, who looked on from the directors’ box at Ibrox ahead of starting work at Celtic Park on Monday morning, it was a stark illustration of the major rebuild he has to oversee this summer.

Tough day for Kennedy

It now seems highly unlikely John Kennedy will be given the opportunity to lead that much needed overhaul from the technical area. His first defeat as interim manager was a painful one, ending hopes that a successful Scottish Cup defence could salvage something from a season which now can’t end soon enough for Celtic and their supporters.

Rangers would love it to carry on forever and they will now be confident of extending it all the way to lifting the Scottish Cup at Hampden on May 22. This is a team operating with purpose, unity and clear-headed organisation.

Their imperious domestic form at Ibrox has now seen them win all 19 of their league and Scottish Cup matches at home, racking up 16 clean sheets in the process. League Cup winners St Johnstone are capable of presenting a serious challenge when they travel to Govan in the quarter-finals next weekend but it would be a major surprise now if Rangers do not go on to lift the oldest piece of silverware of them all for the first time since 2009.

Steven Davis, who played in the 1-0 final defeat of Falkirk that afternoon 12 years ago, was the man who set Rangers on their way to a sixth victory in 11 Old Firm matches on Gerrard’s watch.

The midfielder displayed athleticism which belied his 36 years to open the scoring in the 10th minute with a close range overhead kick after a shot from Joe Aribo was deflected into his path.

It sparked the match into life after a tentative start. For too much of the afternoon, Celtic lacked intensity and belief. But they did enjoy a spell of pressure after falling behind in which Filip Helander had to clear off the line from Kristoffer Ajer after a bizarre close-range miss by Stephen Welsh.

Yet again, Celtic were defensively suspect at crucial moments. Diego Laxalt was beaten all ends up by Aribo whose low cross was turned into his own net by Jonjoe Kenny under pressure from Ryan Kent. It was no surprise that Laxalt was replaced at left-back by Greg Taylor at the start of the second half.

Forrest badly missed

The absence of James Forrest, the winger unable to recover in time from his latest injury setback, was unquestionably a blow for Celtic who missed his pace and intent in the attacking third.

When they did threaten, they were woefully profligate and utterly lacking in conviction. Mohamed Elyounoussi’s poor first touch saw him scorn a simple chance, the ball smothered by a grateful Allan McGregor.

There was a half-hearted look to much of Celtic’s work, even in the periods when they dominated possession. Odsonne Edouard, marshalled effectively for most of the day by Connor Goldson and Filip Helander, could not even accept a 79th minute lifeline for his team when referee Bobby Madden judged Aribo’s nudge in the back of substitute Leigh Griffiths as worthy of a penalty kick.

Edouard’s attempt from 12 yards was saved by McGregor, the 39-year-old goalkeeper adding another memorable moment to his showreel in a season where his contribution has so often been immense and invaluable for Rangers.

Patterson shines again

It was also another excellent afternoon for a player at the opposite end of his career. Nathan Patterson, apart from a couple of slack moments in possession, was outstanding and the teenage right-back continues to make a compelling case for inclusion in the Scotland squad for this summer’s Euro 2020 finals.

Fit again James Tavernier was among the substitutes but the club captain may have a real fight on his hands to retain first choice status at right-back next season.

In midfield, Celtic were never able to exert control of any sustained significance. The cool head of Davis and the boundless energy of Scott Arfield helped Rangers quell the influence of Celtic captain Scott Brown, whose hopes of a trophy-lifting end to his career at the club before he moves to Aberdeen have now been dashed.

Alfredo Morelos, having broken his Old Firm scoring duck at Celtic Park in the previous clash between the sides, was unusually subdued for much of this one. But while he found clear cut chances elusive, his work rate and link up play in conjunction with Aribo and Kent was a good example of the diligent adherence to the game plan which Gerrard and his coaching staff have so successfully instilled in their players since day one of the season.

It has already reaped its just rewards in the shape of the Premiership crown. If Rangers do go on to complete the double, it would be a fair reflection of how dominant they have been domestically.

Highlights: Rangers 2-0 Celtic

Rangers ended Celtic’s four-year Scottish Cup reign – and condemned them to a first trophyless season since 2010 – to reach the quarter-finals with Old Firm derby victory at Ibrox.

Steven Davis’ overhead kick and a Jonjoe Kenny own goal before half-time decided a gripping, chance-laden game.

Celtic’s wasteful finishing culminated in Odsonne Edouard’s weak penalty being saved in the closing stages.

Steven Gerrard’s side host St Johnstone in the last eight next weekend.

Having crushed Celtic’s bid for a 10th consecutive league title, Rangers are now three wins from adding the Scottish Cup after extending their 100% home record in domestic football this season.

They showed a ruthless edge the visitors couldn’t match as the Ibrox men made it five Old Firm games unbeaten, including four wins.

    Reaction & as it happened

Five years and a day since their last Scottish Cup defeat, a shootout loss to Rangers, Celtic again fell to their biggest rivals. From the quadruple treble to empty handed in the space of four months.

Celtic had their moments. Plenty of them. Stephen Welsh missed a glaring opportunity for an equaliser and Edouard and Mohamed Elyounoussi were the main culprits after the break.

Ultimately, their lack of ruthlessness was clinically exposed by a Rangers side who gobbled up the two first-half chances that fell their way.

Joe Aribo, the game’s stand-out performer, was the architect of both, tormenting left-back Diego Laxalt who was put out of his misery when substituted at half-time.

By then, the damage was done and would prove insurmountable.

Scottish Cup quarter-finals

The opening scorer – Davis – was as unlikely as the goal’s execution. Aribo took possession wide right when referee Bobby Madden played advantage after Ryan Kent was clattered by Welsh 30 yards out.

The midfielder jinked inside and tried a shot that rebounded off Kristoffer Ajer and looped into the air where 36-year-old Davis applied an acrobatic and emphatic finish for just his second goal of the season.

When Celtic roused themselves to respond, they ought to have been level. Edouard’s stinging shot drew a save from Allan McGregor before Ryan Christie dragged wide and Callum McGregor had a drive deflected narrowly over.

John Kennedy’s side kept up the pressure and young centre-back Welsh somehow fired away from goal at point-blank range from David Turnbull’s delivery.

Rangers hit back, with Nathan Patterson’s raids down the right flank an impactful feature of their play. The 19-year-old full-back darted past Laxalt and Scott Brown before lashing a shot into the side-netting.

The second goal come from the same area as Rangers preyed on weak link Laxalt. Aribo skinned the Uruguayan far too easily and his cutback was turned home by Kenny under pressure from Kent.

Celtic – with Greg Taylor on for Laxalt at the break – had it all to do but resumed with intent as Turnbull’s 20-strike brought an impressive diving stop from McGregor.

Even better was to come from the Rangers goalkeeper, getting his body in the way of an Elyounoussi shot after the Norwegian danced past Filip Helander and Connor Goldson. The rebound fell to Edouard, who flicked the ball too high from close range.

Celtic’s finishing was again their downfall when Elyounoussi took a heavy touch that allowed McGregor to gather after Edouard’s square pass left the goal gaping.

Rangers attempted to kill off the tie on the counter-attack, but Alfredo Morelos could only poke a shot at Scott Bain after the Celtic goalkeeper couldn’t hold a thumping Kent effort.

The hosts’ lead looked set to be halved 11 minutes from time when Aribo pushed substitute Leigh Griffiths to concede a penalty. Edouard’s effort lacked power, though, as McGregor dived to his right to save.

The final act was Griffiths lashing over from a corner in injury time, summing up Celtic’s day as Rangers dream of a first league and cup double since 2011.

What did we learn?

Gerrard’s Rangers have perfected the knack of beating Celtic without operating at their best.

The early lead gave them something to protect and they lived dangerously at times to weather the storm of Celtic’s early second-half pressure and complete the task.

Rangers have arguably been outperformed in the last three Old Firm games, but they have the mentality and talent to grind out a positive result.

For Celtic, this defeat ends any chance interim manager Kennedy had of staying in the role beyond summer. The club’s miserable season is compounded by losing their Scottish Cup stranglehold to their biggest rivals and a summer clear-out awaits.

Dominic McKay, who watched from the Ibrox stands as he prepares to officially start work as Celtic chief executive on Monday, has a busy time ahead.

What did they say?

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard told Premier Sports: “We rode our luck at times but I don’t think anyone could take it away from us that we deserved it.

“We won the league really early and from my point of view I’ve seen the boys come off it, but it was important we made a statement today.”

Celtic interim manager John Kennedy told Premier Sports: “We were too soft in our pressing in the first half. Second half, we reacted well and were on the front foot. But the big chances we had, we weren’t clinical.

“In front of goal we didn’t have enough belief. When it stays 2-0, you have a mountain to climb.”
