Summary
“UEFA competitions needs Atalanta, Celtic, Rangers, Dinamo Zagreb and Galatasaray. People to know everyone has a chance. We need to keep the dream alive.”
Uefa President Aleksander Ceferin
Football overshadowed due to the new power struggles between the 12 richest European clubs who are in heavy debt trying to ringfence a super league to get them more money. Across football (even amongst the supporters trusts of all the English clubs involved), the idea backfired, and the project was dead in the water within two days!
Celtic not involved, and no surprise taking in the state of the club at present.
Currently in a new environment after many years, with no silverware for this season.
As for this match, poor again from Celtic who were lucky not to lose by more.
Chances created , plenty.Goals scored from them, hee haw.Mistake at a corner , goal conceded .Been watching it all season. Goal conceded was put down to various errors including Jonjoe Kenny who really hasn’t had a good time at Celtic on field.
Dembele short run was only major positive (with positive reports) although good for Griffiths to score again.
Brown playing against Aberdeen, the side he will be moving to next season.

Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths ‘can still make Scotland squad’ after heroics in Aberdeen
The door to Scotland’s Euro 2020 squad could still open for Leigh Griffiths, according to Celtic interim manager John Kennedy, following the striker’s added-time equaliser in the 1-1 draw away to Aberdeen.

Celtic’s Leigh Griffiths makes it 1-1 against Aberdeen.
Celtic’s Leigh Griffiths makes it 1-1 against Aberdeen.
A deft header provided the 30-year-old with his first goal in almost three months, and only his eighth this season. However, Kennedy senses a renewed focus from the forward, whose Celtic future is in doubt with the club still to decide whether to activate a one-year option that would see him remain at the club next season.
“It’s good for Leigh to get that goal,” said the Celtic interim. “It was a great ball from Moi [Mohamed Elyounoussi] and a good header to finish it from Leigh. He has put himself in contention to start games – he’s goal hungry as always.

“Leigh is training well. Can he make the Euros squad? It comes down to form and how Steve [Clarke] sees it.
He has a few strikers to choose from now but he [Leigh] has just to put himself in contention. That goal is what Leigh is all about – getting half a yard in the penalty box and finishing. Leigh is fit. He trains every day. He hasn’t had many starts but he’s fit.
“It will be Steve’s decision and he has added extra strikers like Che Adams. So Steve does have a decision to make but all Leigh can do is make himself available. Leigh is up there with Scotland’s best goalscorers. He had the issue when we came back for pre-season and his fitness wasn’t what it should have been. That took a bit of time for him to get going but I have had no issues with Leigh in terms of how he works. We don’t always play with two strikers, so that doesn’t always help him.
“But Leigh is what he is. He is a great individual for us and when we need a goal, he gets you it. We want him fit and well, and in contention to start games, and that is where he is. The Euros does help us in terms of personal motivation – but there is always something to play for at Celtic.”
While Kennedy believed the late equaliser was deserved for his side’s efforts, new Aberdeen manager Stephen Glass was left exasperated by referee Willie Collum’s failure to award a penalty for a Callum McGregor challenge on Jonny Hayes in the closing stages.
“McGregor did not touch the ball, his body hits him you could see his arm coming across the front of Jonny. He is not going to dive,” said Glass. “Maybe the players need to be a bit more streetwise, if you like, sell things a little more but we don’t want them to have to do that, we expect things to be handled properly but like I say I won’t criticise the referees. I am disappointed we lost a late goal but I’m unbelievable proud of the players though for the effort they put in, I thought they were fantastic against a good Celtic team.”
Celtic haven’t stopped trying – as Leigh Griffiths denies Aberdeen all sorts of milestones
Whatever else might be said about Celtic, they haven’t stopped trying. Too many times for their disaffected faithful – and at times last night – they have been all-too-trying, but they have to be given some credit for salvaging a point at Pittodrie with the final intervention.

Leigh Griffiths scores late for Celtic.
Leigh Griffiths scores late for Celtic.
It looked for all the world that the Stephen Glass era at Aberdeen was on course to begin with two victories, and a totemistic first home success of the Parkhead men in five years, when the encounter ticked into the 94th minute with the home side leading 1-0. But then Mohamed Elyounoussi delivered a ball into the box from deep on the left that substitute Leigh Griffiths was able to meet, sending a jack-knife low past Gary Woods.
Glass will be despairing. After living on their wits in the first period, despite taking an early lead, they had contained a Celtic team that seemed to run out of ideas, with early scorer Lewis Ferguson blowing a matchwinning chance in smacking the outside of the post when clean through on Scott Ban. And with Grifffiths’ equaliser, incredibly they fell seconds short of a first clean sheet at home to the Parkhead side in 20 years.

Passionate Glass
Glass was so impassioned across the encounter – and seemed to infuse his players with similarly consuming focus – he constantly fell foul of referee Willie Collum. He was yellow-carded late on after being told to “calm down” with his “shouting and bawling” by the official towards the interval, and was apoplectic when David Turnbull escaped with a caution late on for kicking out at Dylan McGeouch.
The escape was a moment of fortune for a Celtic team under John Kennedy that appear more orthodoxically a hard-luck merchants. The team the Celtic interim sent out seemed to indicate, meanwhile, he is prepared to manage the hard way and park the building for next season that he talked about early in his interim tenure.
His stance is becoming a growing frustration for the Celtic support. Many took to social media to express their dismay that, aside from plumping for Greg Taylor over a Diego Laxalt all at sea for 45 minutes in the weekend Scottish Cup defeat to Rangers, his only change was enforced.
Kristoffer Ajer nursing a shoulder injury meant Nir Bitton earning a first start since January, but just after the quarter of an hour mark it was insult that was being added for Celtic in desperately familiar fashion.
Familiar woe from crosses
A painful theme for whatever centre-backs Celtic have fielded this season has been inability to deal with crosses. A corner from Niall McGinn was added to their grim collection when Andrew Considine as able to tower above all others and power it towards goal where, from on the line, Lewis Ferguson was able to knock in. It was the 19th set-piece goal Celtic have conceded in this sorry, barren season.
The encounter was framed by the fact that Celtic captain Scott Brown would be playing against a club he has agreed to join in the summer. Glass said on radio beforehand this would not be “a sideshow”. Maybe he meant it would be a sideshow, for that is how it turned out. Wtih Ferguson providing drive to a home side that began with the aggressive intent demanded by Glass, and Brown almost unusually quiet, the Celtic veteran wasn’t even the midfielder who tended to draw the eyes across the evening.
Edouard travails
Across a first period in which Celtic gradually took a grip and produced some crisp football – despite always appearing vulnerable to quick counters – it was eye-rolling moments from Edouard that proved crucial.
Kennedy is certainly deriving a turn from his players, but things took a turn for the worse for the Frenchman even as he undoubtedly put his back into it at Pittodrie.
Three times in the latter stages of the opening half, it didn’t happen for Edouard – the third time not of his own doing. His goal radar seems to have deserved him, as proved when, from the middle of goal, the 24-year-old took an excellent touch to bring the ball under control and leave the goal at his mercy, only to slash it horribly wide. A couple of minutes later, after being played in by Ryan Christie he only had to touch the bll wide of Woods to score, but instead jab it straight at the keeper. And then, to put the tin lid on it, he produced a superb finish from another move in which Celtic had carved open their hosts, only to be wrongly flagged for offside.
Celtic’s domination then also comprised Ferguson blocking a header on the line from Christie, after the Aberdeen man had also forced Bain to make a fine block with a raking drive.
Griffiths talking point
The second period was more even and cagey. Aberdeen believed they should have had a penalty when Callum McGregor chased down Jonny Hayes in the box after he the Irishman looked like he would have a free run in on goal, but Celtic also had their close things.
Kennedy did shake up his team after an hour with Tom Rogic and Griffiths introduced, with a surprise appearance for Karamoko Dembele later on. Everything that can be said about Griffiths’ goal sniffing being at odds with his physical conditioning has been said, but ultimately the 30-year-old striker let the former be the talking point with his first strike since January.

Highlights: Aberdeen 1-1 Celtic
Stephen Glass was “proud” of his players despite Leigh Griffiths’ stoppage-time goal extending Celtic’s unbeaten run against Aberdeen at Pittodrie to 11 games.
It also denied his side the win that would have secured European football next season and means they fall six points behind third-top Hibernian.
Lewis Ferguson’s close finish looked to have won it until Griffiths’ header.
“We asked them to put in a performance and I think they gave it,” Glass said.
“My biggest emotion is pride. The bulk of the game was defensive – we were very well drilled and organised, they were determined to stick to their tasks and probably should have scored a couple more goals.”
Reaction & as it happened
Celtic were wasteful in front of goal themselves and have now gone four away games without a win, but they extend their impressive record of having scored in 38 games at Pittodrie since 2001.
Hibs’ 2-1 win over fifth-placed Livingston earlier in the day meant Aberdeen had the chance to assure themselves of a place in the new Europa Conference League with a victory.
That will have to wait but will surely follow should they continue the form that leaves them unbeaten in four outings.
Glass got off to a winning start as manager as his new charges edged out Livingston on penalties after a 2-2 home draw in the Scottish Cup on Saturday, and he continued with the same attacking formation.
It worked well in the early stages against a Celtic side whose captain Scott Brown will be joining Glass as player-coach in the summer.
A Ferguson header had already forced a good save from Scott Bain by the time Niall McGinn’s cross was headed on by Andrew Considine and the midfielder prodded home.
Another Ferguson header and shot, both thwarted by Bain, sandwiched weak finishes from Edouard, while McGinn also fired wastefully wide.
Ferguson was a hero at the other end, heading a Ryan Christie effort off the line, but that was a signal for Celtic to pile on the pressure after the restart.
David Turnbull prodded an effort against the face of the crossbar, while Ferguson was equally wasteful as he found the outside of a post.
Former Celtic wing-back Hayes broke from midway through his own half, but with only Bain to beat, he ran out of steam and collapsed in a heap on the edge of the penalty box under pressure from Callum McGregor.
That proved to be a crucial miss and, with Aberdeen forced deeper into defence, substitute Griffiths met a Mohamed Elyounoussi cross to head in from close range and extend Celtic’s unbeaten run against Aberdeen to 14 games since May 2018.
Man of the match – Lewis Ferguson
Aberdeen’s Lewis Ferguson scores
Ferguson was a constant threat and the midfielder scored from one of his four first-half chances
What did we learn?
Aberdeen’s new manager looks keen for his side to build more from the back and Glass’ promise of more attacking flair certainly created plenty of chances against top-class opposition.
While they eventually ran out of steam, he will surely take positives from the game, even if the draw does not do much for their pursuit of third place.
Celtic under caretaker John Kennedy continue to look like a team in limbo as they wait for the board to appoint a successor to Neil Lennon.
Edouard looks a shadow of the striker who had big-name clubs eyeing him at the end of the season and, of course, it was his replacement, Griffiths, who saved a point for the visitors.
What they said
Aberdeen players ‘devastated’ not to beat Celtic – Stephen Glass
Aberdeen manager Stephen Glass: “Attacking-wise, we had opportunities to score goals. I feel that they were unfortunate, but I am really proud of our group of players.
“The frustration is that we lose a goal in the last minute, of course. But I think the work rate they put in and the way stood up to the task, we prevented Celtic from making real opportunities and. when we broke, we broke with speed and energy.”
Celtic interim manager John Kennedy: “We have big players with quality. I see them on a daily basis. But it’s in those moments, maybe having a wee bit of doubt and not being ruthless enough. The best players finish in the big moments, so that’s what they need to try and become.”
