Summary

Review

Ange (pre-match):

The one thing I don’t like is the condescending nature of the questions…that I don’t understand the nature of the football club…”

“Some people just want to be condescending towards me, they have been from day one, they probably don’t think that I deserve to be in this spot,”

“I don’t agree with saying ‘oh we nearly, we nearly’ – this club was built on winning.”

Paul Lambert

Chris Sutton : Celtic thumped by Bayer Leverkusen. Didn’t take their chances and exposed badly by ruthless Leverkusen. Ange has a style of play which he will stick with. I think he needs time and patience. Once the new players are bedded in though the team can’t keep making the same mistakes…

Comment:
Fatboab:

Waited until the morning after to post to try and rationalise what we saw.
To approach that game against one of the very best Bundesliga sides who were on top form prior to this game displayed either an astonishing arrogance in AP , or , more likely, exposed the fact he is a genuine “ one trick pony”. No excuses for paucity of squad either tonight, given we had both McCarthy and Bitton on the bench, either of whom would have offered some cover to an overworked central defence at the expense of either Rogic or the worryingly and increasingly hapless David Turnbull.
The staggering lack of quality of both our full backs, Ralston and Montgomery was cruelly exposed by a ruthless and efficient opposition, and it’s something of a blessing that our two centre backs performed as well as they have done together.
We had good spells in both halves, but a combination of poor finishing and excellent goalkeeping meant we failed to score while dominating. The inevitable was only a matter of “ when”.
Kyogo , whilst getting into great positions clearly lacked sharpness, Jota did some great work , especially in the first half, and Abada , whilst failing repeatedly to take his man on did put in some wonderful crosses that on any other night might have found a willing head/ boot.
However, we were constantly torn apart on the counter, and the final result possibly even flatters us, given the excellent Joe Hart and the great saves he made.
Postecoglou , naturally, abandoned his preposterous set up , changing to 4-4-2, even 3-5-2 when it was already a lost cause.
Nir Bitton, while hopeless and hapless in equal measure ,demonstrated clearly why he should get game time ahead of Soro , and McCarthy must wonder why a manager picked the unworkable duo of Rogic/ Turnbull ahead of his own abilities.
We used to beat teams like Leverkusen regularly at CP. our batterings were from sides like Barca and PSG, but here we are , in the second level of European football, sneaking away into the night happy it was only 4.
It’s a sorry state of affairs that our Board , who rate themselves so highly ( “Celtic is in good hands”), made two Key Appointments this summer past, a CEO and a football Manager, neither of whom will last six months.
If that is not an indicator of where the real fault lies, then I don’t know what it will take for change at the very top.

A 4-0 defeat seems harsh yet at the same time I’d say Joe Hart was our best performer. Beyond that unlucky to not score we never got the rub of the green, but Bayer were fully in control especially after they scored (in large part due to fumbling by Turnbull). Can’t argue with four nil defeat. Team looks and feels disjointed. Defence still not working.

Twitter

AgentScotland : Bayer Leverkusan didn’t even get out of second gear here tonight, lets be absolutely honest. That’s the fourth time in the last eight Europa League group games Celtic have conceded four goals, the club is in a helluva mess and have been for a while now, the full blame lies with their dictator, Dermot Desmond.Scrap that, its the 5th time in the last six group games, utterly pathetic.

Etims : FT Celtic 0 Leverkusen 4

Created lots of chances. Didn’t take any. Leverkusen took theirs. Wasn’t for Hart would have been worse. Ange team vs good Leverkusen isn’t where he’ll be judged but…zero pragmatism shown. Keep solid v quality team. He’ll live and die by the sword…I’d like to have seen a 4-2-3-1. Give some solidity in centre mid & defensive protection. Keep full backs wide. Players in and out through injury. Miles off gelling. Playing a quality opponent is the chance to try a more organised approach. Not Ange’s style. Don’t get it.

Kyogo Furuhashi’s return countered by Bayer Leverkusen slicing through Celtic’s Europa League ambitions

https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/celtic/kyogo-furuhashis-return-countered-by-bayer-leverkusen-slicing-through-celtics-europa-league-ambitions-3403304
It may seem an indication of how lowly Celtic’s European aspirations can be considered these days, that their 4-0 defeat by Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League was actually a mixed bag, however daft that might sound.

Let’s face it, it was a racing certainty a truly exciting young German side would leave Ange Postecoglou’s men with only two wins from their past eight games and bottom of their continental section following back-to-back reverses.

Right now, what is important for Postecoglou, and his club, is that they improve in the league, not push on in Europa League. And on that score, the ability to give Kyogo Furuhashi and Callum McGregor more than an hour before the club’s Sunday trip to Aberdeen – following unexpected starts for the previously-sidelined pair – could be of the greatest significance of yet another home defeat in Europe for the Parkhead side.

In terms of the contest, Furuhashi was pivotal through passing up two golden opportunities early on with the slicing movement the Germans had all over the pitch. Celtic had their moments at various spells, even after being two-down at the interval. Keeper Lukas Hradecky, who was exceptional throughout, produced three fabulous blocks in the early minutes of the second half from Jota, twice, and Furuhashi to keep Postecoglou’s men at arm’s length.

An arm eventually snuffed Celtic out, with Cameron Varter-Vickers adjudged to have had the ball cannon off his from a block shot to supply the 57th minute penalty that Lucas Alario despatched.

However, the way they are set up means Postecoglou’s men are a team that will always be picked off by good sides. Leverkusen did so with their fourth of the night, indeed, Amine Adill racing through in time added on to rub Celtic’s noses with a fourth.

Celtic Park was eerily quiet by then, which contrasted with the electric sense of anticipation that infused it over the surprise start for Furuhashi following a month on the sidelines for the club’s attacking talisman seemed to give him too much to live up to. And so it proved. Just not in the manner that might have been imagined.

In a breathless start that witnessed Levekusen having the ball into the net a mere 60 seconds in, only for the offside flag to cut short their celebrations, it was a matter of only 50 seconds more before perhaps the pivotal moment of the evening arrived.

At that point, the wispish Japanese striker suddenly found himself with the ball at his feet and only the Leverkusen keeper to beat. He did that, but then delayed before applying the coup de grace and, from nowhere, Jonathan Tah motored in to produce a superb saving block.

Incredibly, as Celtic took the game to their more gifted opponents as Postecoglou said they would, Furuhashi would miss a second opportunity to cap an enterprising opening with the opening goal after released by Liel Abada in the 19th minute. On this occasion, his decision this time to try and curl the ball, rather than himself, around the advancing keeper resulted in Hradecky blocking with his foot.

Celtic had the visitors on the rack – Carl Starfelt shortly afterwards being denied by the keeper – but, in what seemed the blink of an eye, they found themselves being stretched to breaking point.

The alacrity with which an incredibly youthful Leverkusen team could break on to them was always going to cause them heart in mouth moments. However, the frustration was that when the Germans did net 25 minutes in – as they inevitably would – it was the product of an inexplicable error from David Turnbull near the left touchline. In seeking to latch on to the ball as Tah hovered, he instead stumbled over it and tumbled to the ground, allowing his opponent to cross for Piero Hincapie to score on a full debut for his club.

In contextualising a sobering loss for Celtic, it is worth noting that this did not come against a seasoned European force. The Ecudorian Hincapie is only 19, and the scorer of Leverkusen’s second was they 18-year-old phenomenon that is Florian Witz. He pounced for a sixth goal in as many games 35 minutes in through benefitting from Celtic’s risk and reward strategy that demands their full-backs move into the centre of the pitch to play passes. Anthony Ralston did so, but when he didn’t succeed in threading through the middle and only found a blue shirt, Paulinho was played in down the right-back area he had vacated to set-up the teenage striking sensation.

At that point it looked like it could get mighty messy for Postecoglou with the speed of the movement of Bayer – one exponent, familiar in the lighting quick former Celtic player Jeremie Frimpong – appearing as if it could allow them to carve open their opponents at any moment. Credit to Celtic that they came again strongly early in the second period, even if they can’t survive at this level as they are currently configured.

Ange Postecoglou slams Celtic’s “lack of discipline” in “unacceptable” 4-0 ending of Europa League defeat to Bayer Leverkusen
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has rounded on his players for an “unacceptable” “lack of discipline” evident in the 94th minute loss of a fourth goal in the 4-0 Europa League whipping by Bayer Leverkusen on an evening when Celtic squandered a series of early opportunities.

And he attributed the thinness of the squad he has been forced to work with as a consequence of widespread injury problems – partially alleviated by Kyogo Furuhashi’s return alongside captain Callum McGregor and striker Giorgios Giakoumakis’ debut as a late substitute – for denying him the ability to respond to any signs of laxity with personnel switch-ups.

“Up until now, we’ve been limited in the changes I can make. We are literally running with a squad of 14 or 15 at the moment, so it’s very hard to create artificial consequences for guys who are not concentrating, not being disciplined,” he said in relation to errors inherent in the goals conceded to a vibrant young German opponent.

“It’s not just the mistakes. There were times when, particularly at the end, the players need to be more disciplined because it shouldn’t have been a 4-0 game, irrespective of Bayer being a good side.

Kyogo Furuhashi’s return countered by Bayer Leverkusen slicing through Celtic’s …

“If we lost 2-0, we know we’ve created a lot of chances against a good side, but we fell away at the end through lack of discipline and for me that’s unacceptable. If we’d lost 2-0 tonight or 2-1, OK. But when you lose 4-0, it’s not enough. It’s disappointing and that scoreline shouldn’t have reflected that game.

“I can’t let the guys or myself off the hook. We are not going to change our approach. I really believe that moving forward when we play in these big games I want us to be a team that doesn’t fear anyone. I want to be a team that goes at it and takes the game to opponents.

“That’s the kind of team we’re going to be and that’s what I’m trying to build. The process, yes, it takes time and we are going to cop some knocks on the chin like we did tonight but that doesn’t mean you have to accept that. You need to understand that it’s avoidable if you do certain things.”

Highly-rated Florian Wirtz added Bayer Leverkusen’s second goal

A promising Celtic start was undone by a string of defensive lapses as Bayer Leverkusen ruthlessly punished their hosts to take victory in their Europa League meeting in Glasgow.

A frantic game played in front of an, at times, raucous crowd raged in the opening minutes, before Piero Hincapie finished after David Turnbull’s slip.

Florian Wirtz chipped the ball over Joe Hart to make it 2-0, Lucas Hilario’s penalty killed Celtic’s second-half momentum before substitute Amine Adli smashed in a fourth with the last kick.

Defeat leaves Celtic bottom of Group G with zero points with a double header against also winless Ferencvaros to come next, while Leverkusen, whose fourth was just reward for a glut of late surges, have a 100% record alongside Real Betis.

Reaction & as it happened
‘We won’t change our style’ – Postecoglou

The surprise returns of Kyogo Furuhashi and captain Callum McGregor to the Celtic XI after injuries sent an electricity around Celtic Park pre-match, as the fans sensed their chances of victory amid a poor run of form were suddenly revived.

Their optimism initially proved well-judged as – after surviving an offside goal for Wirtz inside one minute – they played with pace and vigour, only to be undone by defensive mistakes and inspired Luka Hradecky in the Leverkusen goal.

Kyogo in particular was outstanding as his movement reinvigorated a recently stunted Celtic.

The Japanese forward was first denied by a stunning covering tackle from Jonathan Tah, while Hradecky saved his efforts either side of the break.

Jota was also lively, and was himself prevented spectacularly by Hradecky as Ange Postecoglou’s side desperately attempted to avoid a fifth defeat in eight games.

But as has been the theme of Celtic’s season, slackness cost them dearly against a quality Leverkusen side with just one defeat this season – a 4-3 loss to Borussia Dortmund.

First, Turnbull slipped after feinting to play the ball out in his own box, and that allowed Mitchel Bakker to square for Hincapie to sweep home the opener on 25 minutes.

A lack of communication at the back then allowed 18-year-old Wirtz to sneak in behind and remain onside before lifting the ball into the top corner for his sixth goal in seven games.

That left Celtic chasing the second half, and despite another promising spell, Hradecky and Leverkusen’s attacking quality halted their challenge.

Former Celtic right-back Jeremie Frimpong twisted and turned before forcing Hart into a save, and Cameron Carter-Vickers was judged to have blocked the follow up with his hand.

Hilario calmly sent Hart the wrong way from the penalty spot to effectively end Celtic’s hopes of victory with half an hour to play.

By this point Leverkusen were content to soak up Celtic’s weary attacks and punch on the break with their searing pace.

And Adli finally took one of their late chances as he sent a rocket beyond Hart on the angle to finish a fine night for the visitors in style.
Man of the match – Lukas Hradecky

What did we learn?

Leverkusen are a quality side who taught Celtic a lesson. The home side’s attacking approach put them on the back foot early on, but they weathered that storm, and imposed themselves on the match.

Wirtz looks like a star of the future, and his goal – a fine finish after Leverkusen pounced on a slack pass and surged forward – demonstrated his and his side’s prowess and they had plenty of further chances.

They were able to switch to a back five late on and use their pace to devastating effect as Celtic continued to plug away to no avail. It demonstrated their ability to adapt, while Celtic seem incapable of playing different ways.

Such a high tempo approach from Celtic is a thrill to watch when Kyogo and McGregor are in the team, but question marks remain about the mobility of Rogic and Turnbull in this system. When Celtic lose the ball, the pair are often caught too far up the pitch.

Yes, Postecoglou’s side had chances (18 shots), but they’ve conceded eight in two games in the Europa League so far. The reality is with the current personnel, they need to take nearly every chance that comes their way at this level to win matches, because they cannot keep the ball out at the other end.

Whether by tactical changes, coaching, or recruitment in January, Celtic need to improve without the ball. If they can do that, they have the potential to be an effective side.
What the stats say

None of Bayer Leverkusen’s last 21 matches in European competition has been drawn, with the German side winning 13 and losing eight.
Celtic failed to score for the first time in 20 matches in European competition (incl. qualifiers), since a 2-0 Europa League defeat at CFR Cluj in December 2019.
German sides have won six of their last seven European away games against Scottish sides (L1), with Leverkusen winning the last two against Rangers and Celtic respectively. Indeed, Celtic have been responsible for four of those defeats, losing to a different club each time.
Celtic have conceded 2+ goals in each of their last nine Europa League games. Since the competition was rebranded in 2009, only Slovan Bratislava have had a longer such run in the competition (11 games between 2011 and 2019).
With Florian Wirtz (18y 150d) and Piero Hincapié (19y 264d) finding the net, tonight was the first time Bayer Leverkusen have had two teenagers score for them in the same major European game.
