Trivia
- KO: 15:00 Saturday; Motherwell FC live streaming ppv @£12 BUT not for viewers in England!
- Celtic make ground with Hearts drawing with Sevco; 4pts behind top spot!
- Bolingoli back in the side and had a good night game but lucky not to concede a penalty which is a big talking point BUT a M’well player had handled the ball just before that.
- James McCarthy missed the Motherwell game on Saturday due to a small muscular problem. The 30-year-old returned to training on Monday and ang admitted it has been difficult for the player coming in late.
- Referee : match official Collum goes off with an injury in first half! Bizarre one.
- Back after long international break. Scotland defeat Israel 3-2 and Faroes 1-0; on course for World Cup play-offs (coming second in group).
- Four former players who were honoured with Scotland caps for a Scotland tour in the close-season of 1967: included Celtic’s Harry Hood but he has passed away, RIP. Honour received by his family.
- ‘Class action’ against Celtic launched by sex abuse survivors in multi-million pound claim. Up to 25 victims of historical abuse at Celtic Boys Club are joining forces in one of the first court cases of its kind in Scotland. Opinion of this site: All that matters is justice, and this is a difficult sensitive subject which must be noted.
- Ex-Celt Peter Grant under the cosh with Dunfermline as manager in second tier. In only May just past, he was linked to return to Celtic as part of team with Eddie Howe. With all due respect to Peter Grant he is not what Celtic need at present to progress.
- Scottish Premiership set to shut down for around a month in Nov/Dec 2022 to accommodate the World Cup in Qatar.
- Nobel Prize winner for Chemistry announced and one of the winners is North Lanarkshire born & raised: Prof David MacMillan. Congratulations and everyone is very proud of him.
- Saudi takeover of Newcastle FC for £300m in England. A lot of moral concerns being raised across media.
- Covid: Away fans should be able to attend matches at Ibrox and Celtic Park from now on.
- Burnley & others hold a remembrance ceremony honouring the legendary Jimmy Hogan, who was also a coach at Celtic. His new gravestone has the badges of all the clubs he coached & played at, including Celtic’s. Respect to all.
- Passing away of Monsignor Peter Smith, former chancellor of the Archdiocese of Glasgow and parish priest of St Mary’s, Calton. RIP
- Music: The Rolling Stones have dropped Brown Sugar, one of their biggest hits, from their US tour. It follows unease with the depictions of black women and references to slavery in the song, which reached number one in the US in 1971.
- Hibs announce won’t be printing match programmes any more. Sign of the changing times.
- Sevco: In a new ad, Sevco use a tune offensive to many, based on the Famin Song. a tune connected to a song that some Sevco fans were charged for singing only last month. Playing the Famine Song in the background of dialogue that’s say “This city was ours first” is so on the nose they’re baiting a reaction.
- T20 Cricket world cup: Just started, on the Sunday; Scotland created a huge upset by defeating Bangladesh! Being played in United Arab Emirates and Oman.
- Conservative MP David Amess died after being stabbed at his constituency surgery in Essex. RIP
Summary
Ange Postecoglou: “Well, I thought the Premiership race was over, mate, so I’m not looking at the table any more. We are just kind of doing our own thing and it’s of zero significance for us.”
JimmyMac of KDS:
A deserved win and the sort of straightforward performance we haven’t seen so far under Ange. The two goals were crackers for different reasons. I think minor tactical tweaks with the full backs having less of a roaming role and there was less heart in mouth incidents.
We didn’t create that many chances and had the tendency to put high balls into the box for a wee striker to get out muscled/jumped. We also struggled at times to get the ball to the forward players but overall, a comfortable win.
QA of KDS:
For me a comfortable win at a pretty challenging venue says a lot more than sticking 6 past Dundee or St Mirren. We never really had to get above second gear and made pretty easy meat of that.
In the first half we seemed to be very dogmatic in playing out from the back all the way up the park when we had drawn their defensive line higher up the park. It looked like they were ripe for the ball over the top and it was good to see us go a bit more direct in the second half.
We also went a bit more flat across the back four and dropped Turnbull deeper. This was a pretty obvious thing to do in games weeks ago. To be fair if Ange is going to get a kicking for not adjusting it’s fair to say well done when he does.
The sub ref was abysmal. Seemed to do everything on delay. Didn’t know what handball was (which benefitted us it seems). The tackle on Turnbull was a bit ‘robust’. The boy Roberts could have been sent off for his arm/elbow on Boli.
Twitter:
Turnbull scores a scorcher of a goal v his old club. He needed that after all the flak he’s getting of late.
Etims: FT MWell 0 Celtic 2
Considering the traditionally tough venue, our poor away record and the pressure being us this early in the season…in my opinion….the best performance of the season. Totally controlled from start to finish. Everyone contributed. Big bravo We controlled the ball virtually all game but I thought Carter-Vickers and Starfelt were rock solid in central defence. Partnership starting to build there as both also excellent in our last game away to Aberdeen.
St Anthony: Just heard Graham Alexander on radio complaining about referee. What a laugh. No mention of penalty Celtic should have had first half. No mention of appalling tackle on Turnbull which was straight red. No mention of how Mugabi stayed on, Ange too soft on this. He has to speak out
Jh: I thought bolingoli had a great game, lucky to get away with the handball, but done really well today, does all the hard work but let’s himself down with his final ball. But he shouldn’t be criticised today.

Motherwell 0-2 Celtic: Jota and David Turnbull on target to give Hoops second straight win on the road

Match report as Celtic beat Motherwell 2-0 to move fourth in the Scottish Premiership; Jota’s first-half goal puts visitors in control before David Turnbull hits stunning long-range strike after the break on his return to Fir Park
By PA Media
Sunday 17 October 2021 09:17, UK
David Turnbull struck a glorious goal on his first appearance back at Fir Park for Celtic as the visitors beat Motherwell 2-0.
The midfielder showed why Celtic paid Motherwell £3m for his services in August last year when he sent a swerving 25-yard effort past a motionless Liam Kelly and into the top corner to put the visitors two ahead.
Jota had scored a well-taken but controversial early opener, with the hosts unhappy with a decision not to award them a foul by referee Willie Collum, who went off injured during the first half.
Celtic went on to win comfortably as they recorded back-to-back away victories after waiting eight months to win on the road in Scotland before their late triumph at Aberdeen before the international break.
There was further cause for celebration for their travelling fans as Celtic reduced the deficit on cinch Premiership leaders Rangers to four points. Craig Halkett’s late equaliser for Hearts at Ibrox was greeted by huge cheers from the Celtic support.

Tom Rogic was restored to the Celtic midfield after coming off the bench to help get that elusive away win at Pittodrie and Boli Bolingoli started after Adam Montgomery missed out.
Motherwell handed a surprise first start to former Rangers midfielder Sean Goss, who struggled to make any impact, and started with Kevin van Veen on the bench.

Jota strikes to put Celtic ahead at Motherwell

Celtic faced some early concerns. Joe Hart got out of a difficult situation by dribbling past Jordan Roberts and Anthony Ralston cleared from in front of his goal after Tony Watt had got in behind.
Turnbull shot wide from 25 yards with Motherwell outnumbered on the counter-attack before the opening goal came in the 17th minute after Kyogo Furuhashi tracked back to slide in on Callum Slattery. The Motherwell players expected a free-kick but Collum played on.
Rogic played a pass inside Stephen O’Donnell for Jota to run on to and the on-loan Benfica winger slotted the ball inside Kelly’s near post.
Team news
Motherwell
Motherwell made two changes, bringing in Jordan Roberts and Sean Goss for first starts of the season.
Celtic
Two changes for Celtic, too, Tom Rogic starting in midfield and Boli Bolingoli coming in at the back. Nir Bitton and Adam Montgomery dropped out from the side which won at Aberdeen.
Collum soon substituted himself off for fourth official Chris Fordyce after pulling up with an injury. The replacement referee was making his top-flight debut.
Celtic cruised the rest of the half with Motherwell struggling to stop crosses or put their opponents under any pressure. Jota came close to a second when his volley bounced up and over the bar.
The pattern of play did not change after the break. Furuhashi came close to converting Ralston’s cross before Turnbull produced his moment of magic in the 52nd minute after receiving the ball just inside from the left flank. The 22-year-old made no moves to celebrate but was quickly engulfed by team-mates.
Man of the match
David Turnbull (Celtic)
Showed the Motherwell fans what they are missing with a belting strike to settle the argument for good.
Turnbull soon threatened again with a corner that was headed on by Furuhashi and ultimately hit the post before the midfielder forced a save from Kelly.
Van Veen came on for Motherwell and appealed strongly for a penalty for handball from Bolingoli after flicking the ball in the air. Fordyce and his well-placed assistant were unconvinced.
The Dutch striker headed wide after Nathan McGinley’s cross was just too high for him to convert, but Celtic regained control.
Their substitute striker, Giorgos Giakoumakis, had a couple of sniffs at goal but could not get a clean contact.

What the managers said…
Motherwell boss Graham Alexander on the penalty incident: “It’s a blatant penalty. I could tell by the reaction of the
players. We are in the box, we are ready to get an opportunity to score and it’s a blatant penalty, the lad has just slapped the ball away. But us getting a penalty against one of the big boys is quite rare.
“At a really critical time of the game, it gives us a lifeline if we get the penalty, and with the atmosphere here and the way our team is, I think we give ourselves a chance of getting something from the game. It wasn’t given to us.
“All I can say is we don’t get them. We should have had one a few weeks ago at Ibrox, we should have had one here against Aberdeen last year when it was blatant, their player made the best save of the game. We don’t get them, simple as, and it’s easy to give them against us. We have had three against us and we haven’t had the penalties we should have.
“I have only been up here nine months so I am still learning but I’m learning quickly that it’s easy to give a penalty against us and it’s very, very difficult to give one for us, from my relatively new experience here.”
Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou on closing the gap to Rangers to four points: “I thought the Premiership race was over, mate, so I’m not looking at the table. We are just kind of doing our own thing. It’s of zero significance for us.
“What is more important for us is that we get some belief out of today. It’s one thing to get a victory here but to control a game here like we did can give us real belief moving forward.
“I thought we were really in control and scored two good goals and created some chances, and Joe (Hart) didn’t have a save to make. That’s the most pleasing thing, that we controlled the game at a difficult place.
“We have just got to keep our heads down and run our own race. When you do that and keep improving, we will see where we end up.”
David Turnbull explains Celtic wonder goal and why he didn’t celebrate against Motherwell
There are some moments in games of football which leave those watching on lost for words. In Celtic’s 2-0 win over Motherwell, David Turnbull produced one of those moments.

Arm up to let Jota know he wanted the ball, the midfielder nonchalantly stepped on to the pass with only one thing in his mind.
More than 25 yards out, Turnbull struck a ferocious but equally delicate effort which veered through air as if the ball burst and impact, over Liam Kelly’s head and into the top corner.

It was a shot and goal which explains why the 21-year-old took on an effort in the first half when he had three better placed team-mates ahead of him on the counter-attack.
Turnbull can shoot and he can shoot well. But just how does he get that movement on the ball?
“A few of the boys were asking me,” he said.
“I’ve done it a few times, once I got the ball I just thought ‘I need to strike this’ and try to put a wee bit of swazz on it.
“I had a chance in the first half and was in two minds whether to pass it or not. So the second time, when I got it I knew I was going to give it my best strike.
“I have done it before and I know what I’m capable of, so I’m delighted it went into the top corner.”
Not the time to celebrate
The ball hitting the back of the net was met by wild scenes in the away end plus arms in the air from team-mates Kyogo Furuhashi and Tom Rogic.
Turnbull, however, was emotionless. At least on the outside, refusing to celebrate against a club which provided him with so much before the move to Celtic in a deal which could be worth £3.25million.
“Everyone knows what kind of club Motherwell are and how they helped me when I was younger,” he said. “So I wanted to be respectful.
“I knew beforehand I wouldn’t celebrate because I spoke to my family about it. They were asking me what I’d do if I scored a goal and I told them I wouldn’t, I’d just leave it.
“Obviously I wanted to score but I didn’t want to celebrate too much.
“I felt like doing it because it’s a great feeling every time you score and that was no different, but I’d decided I wasn’t going to do it.
“It was hard to stop myself but I was delighted to put the ball in the top corner anyway. Hopefully I can score more of them in future and will be celebrating them as I want to.
“It was very different coming back here this season with a crowd in. Last year I was on the bench here and there were no supporters here. So ever since the fixtures were announced I was looking forward to coming back.
“It was good to be back here, seeing all the familiar faces from my time here. I will be getting a few messages from my pals later on no doubt, there will be a bit of banter.
“The most important thing today was getting the three points to keep going.”
Ange Postecoglou hopes Celtic reap the benefits of a settling squad
Ange Postecoglou believes he’s now getting strength in depth as he looks forward to utilising the options of a more settled squad when Ferencvaros visit Celtic on Tuesday afternoon.

The Europa League encounter will take place at 3.30pm due to the Cop26 conference in Glasgow. Though the kick-off time is a little unusual and potentially disruptive, the Australian welcomes the opportunity to build up a head of steam after recording consecutive victories in the cinch Premiership against Aberdeen and Motherwell.
Postecoglou knows results haven’t been good enough as his side sit in 4th place in the top flight, and bottom of Group G, but he expects things to improve now players are returning to fitness, while the international break allowed others to acclimatise themselves after being thrown into the deep end upon their arrival.

“We just have more options now. Guys like [Giorgos] Giakoumakis, who has only just done pre-season really over these past ten days.
“Mikey Johnston is coming back. Obviously Kyogo [Furuhashi] missed a fair chunk after the last international break.
“When I look back on those European games it would have been great to have some attacking options to come off the bench.
“Betis away I remember we played with young Adam as a starting left-winger and we couldn’t really change it up at all because Liel Abada was unavailable, Kyogo wasn’t available and Giakoumakis wasn’t ready.
“That ability now to both rotate after the league game or even during the game, to change it up, we are in a much better shape.
He continued: “Yes, [James] McCarthy, Giakoumakis, Mikey [have benefitted from the ten-day break] but even guys like [Cameron] Carter-Vickers and Jota.
“People forget they arrived, had two sessions with us and then we threw them in.
“Jota’s second game for us was away to Betis. Cameron the same. So for those guys to have those ten days just to settle on and off the field. To settle their lives down and get a bit of normalcy around it.
“Those first eight weeks we were just throwing guys in left right and centre. Kyogo literally met the players the morning of the Hearts game. Joe Hart met the players on the morning of that European game [against Jablonec].
“So this has been an opportunity to establish a normal routine.”

David Turnbull goal v Motherwell
David Turnbull doubled Celtic’s advantage against his ex-club with a sensational strike
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou hailed his side’s game management as they made it back-to-back away Scottish Premiership wins away to Motherwell.
Jota’s near-post finish and David Turnbull’s stunning strike earned the victory as the visitors kept a first clean sheet on the road this term.
The win moves Celtic up to fourth, four points behind leaders Rangers, who dropped points at home to Hearts.
“Right from the start, we controlled the game well,” Postecoglou said.
“It was a good, solid performance. It’s not easy to control a game away from home, especially here. Joe [Hart] didn’t have a save to make in the end – defensively we were strong.”
The loss ends the Fir Park side’s run of three straight home wins and leaves them without a victory over Celtic in 21 games.
Reaction & as it happened
Motherwell were aiming for a first Premiership win over their visitors since 2016 and Graham Alexander’s side looked keen to halt that trend in an aggressive start.
It made for a frantic opening as both sets of players were afforded space, with Callum McGregor and Turnbull shooting off target on the break either side of a dangerous Tony Watt cross that had to be turned behind.
The space the visitors had would be the hosts’ undoing on 17 minutes, as Tom Rogic’s inch-perfect pass set winger Jota free to slam in at Liam Kelly’s near post.
The Motherwell players were unhappy as they believed Celtic forward Kyogo Furuhashi fouled Callum Slattery in the build-up.
After a pulsating opening, Postecoglou’s side took the sting out of the game with long spells of possession but failed to add to their tally in the first half.
Turnbull ended the contest shortly after the break with a sensational bending effort that left goalkeeper Kelly with no chance.
The hosts attempted to rally and were unfortunate not be awarded a penalty when Celtic left-back Boli Bolingoli appeared to handle in the area with Kevin van Veen in possession.
Substitute Van Veen then guided a late close-range header off target, but Postecoglou’s side were well worth their win for a dominant and controlled second-half showing that probably merited more goals.
Man of the match – Jota
Kyogo Furuhashi & Jota
Turnbull could have claimed the award for his goal alone, but Jota again was Celtic’s dangerman and that option to buy at the end of this season is looking more attractive each week
What did we learn?
Motherwell manager Alexander spoke of his side’s expectancy to succeed against the Old Firm and their start to the game highlighted that.
But Celtic’s opener deflated the home side and they struggled to gain any momentum.
Celtic’s wins at Fir Park and Pittodrie a fortnight ago have shown a different side to the team Postecoglou is assembling.
The defence is far from perfect, but more control has been demonstrated across the 90 minutes and the clean sheet in Lanarkshire is their first on the road this campaign.
What did they say?
Motherwell manager Graham Alexander: “We were undone by a little bit of quality with the goals. But generally, I thought our shape was good and our discipline was excellent.
“We just couldn’t find that killer touch when we had a couple of balls flash across goal before they scored. But my boys kept going.”
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “Both goals were great . The first one was a fantastic ball by Tom Rogic and Dave [Turnbull] has got that in his locker, he can put one in top corner.
“I hope we are more settled now. We were able to put on three players that can make an impact.”
What’s next?
Celtic are in Europa League action this Tuesday as they welcome Ferencvaros at the unusual time of 15:30 BST, due to COP 26 arrangements, while Motherwell go to Dundee United in the Premiership next Saturday (15:00).
