Summary
Giorgos Giakoumakis missed an injury-time penalty as Celtic failed to climb top of the Scottish Premiership after a frustrating draw with Livingston.
We give Ange the credit when he’s due it, and there’s been plenty of that recently. 3 key mistakes today though: 1. Dropping Kyogo, our best player 2. Starting Abada over Mikey Johnston 3. Changing PK taker from Juranovic (2 out of 2)
(joebloggscity)
This was like a performance from last season. Grim stuff .
81 crosses over two games against Livingston. 0 goals.
Celtic squander a chance to go top of the league for first time this season (albeit for just 24 hours) but are wasteful despite 85% possession and only one chance on goal in open play in the 90minutes. Celtic then get a penalty in injury time and miss it by Giokamouakis, who actually scored 9/9 penalties last season for his last club. Kyogo was rested at the start. Some complain about it.
(RS of KDS)
Truly abysmal.
We were absolutely pish. No tempo, no press and no urgency.
Manager got the starting eleven and the penalty taker wrong.
Midfield crap. McGregor can’t play with this back to opposition goal and Turnbull just doesn’t have it.
Awful.
@agentscotland: Celtic are a work in progress & days like today always looked inevitable at the start of the season, however home games against bottom six must be a gimme if they want to succeed but with the appointment of Higgins & that lackluster display they’ve flatlined their own momentum.
(The Green Lantern of KDS):
Various things conspired to cause that result. With hindsight, it wasn’t really one of those days in that we didn’t creat loads of chances only to find them saved by a keeper having the game of his life. We didn’t create enough chances.
Swapping Rogic for Bitton changes is detrimental to the way the midfield works. For me, McGregor isnt’t a no.8; he’s better at the base of the midfield. Bitton and Turnbull are slow individually, so combined the midfield is slow indeed. Likewise, Juranovic on the left disrupts the attacking flow down that side.
I was fine with Kyogo coming off the bench because he can’t play every game. That was a rational decision to make. It didn’t work but I can see why Ange did it. The issue was that Giakoumakis isn’t particularly good. His play before the penalty had been poor. Again, hindsight, but it would have been better to let Kyogo try to win the game then bring on Giakoumakis to see it out.
Ange needs to take his share of the blame. Persistent crossing won’t work against centre halves like Livi’s. Clearly the space was out wide but some overlapping runs – not possible in this inverted full back scheme – would have afforded the opportunity for cutbacks. I’m not sure why he insists on playing that way even when it isn’t working. It’s not the first time.
Overall, a massively deflating performance and result. The script is written for the away team to win at Fir Park, swinging momentum back in their favour.

HAVE YOUR SAY
How Ange Postecoglou’s men could appear so limp at home to Livingston only days after lording it over Hibs at Easter Road suggests it won’t always be a position to cherish. The fluffing of their lines when the starring role was on offer was sobering…a scoreless draw to end a four-game league winning sequence preventing them earning the pre-eminent position in the cinch Premiership – at least temporarily – that their legions fully expected to be cherishing come full-time.
Visiting manager David Martindale joked it was down to him that the West Lothian men are taking on the appearance of a bogey team to Celtic. There is something in that with a most unlikely clean sheet and point claimed in the east end of Glasgow despite being constantly under the pump. Six weeks on from inflicting the most painful defeat of Postecoglou’s tenure on their own patch. Martindale superbly organised his men into a defensive shape that was five, eight and practically 10-strong as they ceded territory but not inroads to a Celtic boasting 85% possession.

Yet, the Celtic manager can be considered to have played into Martindale’s hands. The Livingston manager on radio beforehand openly expressed delight over Kyogo Furuhashi starting on the bench. Celtic simply do not have the same disorientating effect on opponents without the Japanese attacker’s movement through the middle. And without the injured Tom Rogic they didn’t not have the same incisiveness in crafting openings from the centre. It was astonishing they fashioned only two efforts on target.
One of these, of course, was the first of two pivotal moments that rolled around in added time. And for the first, again Postecoglou must be held accountable. Following a stupid cuff round the ear from Oyo Obileye on Furuhashi that resulted in the centre-back being shown a red by referee Bobby Madden as well as the official pointing to the spot, it seemed a case of being too clever by half in handing the penalty duties to Giorgos Giakoumakis. Inexplicable, really, when Josip Juranovic had proved so clinical in despatching two penalties for the club this season – the second only last Saturday in the 2-0 home win over St Johnstone.
The Greek striker didn’t look confident, didn’t have the right body shape when he struck a powder-puff effort Max Stryjek easily dropped to his right to keep out. He then compounded that aberration by suffering similarly in scuffing from only yards out when the ball sat up for him with the goal gaping seconds later. Rangers will be pinching themselves that, for all their toils this season, they have the opportunity to restore a four-point gap at the top of the table at Motherwell tomorrow. Celtic, meanwhile, must face up to the fact that just when they seem to have put their away league form in order, it is now at home – with two draws in three games – they are exhibiting damaging flaws.
Celtic: Hart; Ralston, Carter-Vickers, Starfelt (Furuhashi 58), Juranovic; Bitton; Abada (Johnston 58), Turnbull, McGregor, Jota (Forrest 82); Giakoumakis. Subs: McCarthy, Bain, Montgomery, Welsh.
Livingston: Stryjek; Devlin, Obileye, Fitzwater, Parkes, Kelly; Bailey, Holt, Omeonga, Shinnie (Forrest 73); Anderson (Panayiotou 73). Subs: Maley, Longridge, Jacobs, Montano, McMillan.

Giorgos Giakoumakis missed an injury-time penalty as Celtic failed to climb top of the Scottish Premiership after a frustrating draw with Livingston.
The Greek striker’s weak spot-kick was saved by Max Stryjek after Ayo Obileye was sent off for lashing out at Celtic substitute Kyogo Furuhashi.
Despite 85% possession, it was just the hosts’ second attempt on target as resolute Livingston dug in for a point.
Celtic stay second, now a point behind Rangers, who face Motherwell on Sunday.
Giakoumakis fluffed an even later chance, scuffing wide with the goal gaping, but Livingston were aggrieved not to be given a spot-kick of their own when home goalkeeper Joe Hart caught Obileye in the face.
The West Lothian side drop a place to 10th despite going four unbeaten and making it four points from two meetings with Celtic this season.
Reaction & as it happened
The penalty was Stryjek’s first save as Livingston nullified their hosts expertly. David Martindale’s men were the last side to inflict a league defeat on Celtic, winning 1-0 in West Lothian in September, and came to Glasgow with two victories in a three-game unbeaten run.
Their belief and organisation shone through despite manager Martindale having to get “inventive” with his team set-up after a couple of injuries on Friday scuppered his plans.
The hastily arranged three-man backline of Tom Parkes, Jack Fitzwater and Obileye stood strong and repelled everything Celtic could throw at them.
Even when Obileye’s late moment of madness presented Celtic with the chance of a fifth straight league win, Stryjek came to his defender’s rescue with a save low to his right.
Missing the midfield artistry of Tom Rogic, Celtic concentrated their attacks down the flanks, with a succession of deliveries from Jota and Anthony Ralston dealt with by the visitors.
Josip Juranovic and Liel Abada flashed efforts over the bar and Carl Starfelt headed narrowly too high, but Celtic had not created a chance of note until the stroke of half-time when Ralston’s curling shot towards the far post was nodded off the line by Fitzwater.
The pattern continued and, by the hour mark, home manager Ange Postecoglou had seen enough. Centre-back Starfelt could not continue after picking up an injury, and striker Kyogo was sent on while Mikey Johnston replaced Abada in a double change.
Still Celtic lacked a cutting edge and their efforts were summed up when David Turnbull picked out Jota unmarked, only for the Portuguese winger to take a fresh-air swipe.
Livingston posed no threat at the other end, bar a shot from substitute Alan Forrest that deflected over, but were incensed when Hart went unpunished for clattering Obileye as the goalkeeper came out to clear a free-kick.
There was further drama to come with Giakoumakis’ penalty miss, with the Greek getting the nod over Juranovic who had scored Celtic’s last two spot-kicks.
The forward ought to have made amends in the dying embers of six added minutes, but could not get a clean connection and the ball drifted wide.

What did we learn?
Celtic have been in commanding domestic form but looked bereft of ideas on how to break down the well-drilled visitors.
Rogic’s loss was keenly felt as Celtic continually went wide and their deliveries hit a brick wall of Livingston’s towering three-man defence.
And after scoring on his first start in Celtic’s previous home outing, this was a nightmare afternoon for Giakoumakis, who offered little threat throughout before his botched injury-time finishing.
As for Livingston, Martindale got his tactical plan spot on. They came for a point, got it relatively comfortably, and could even have stolen all three had Hart been penalised for clattering Obileye.
What did they say?
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “It was just one of those days. We created enough opportunities to win. We moved the ball well and found a way through 11 players sitting deep, but just couldn’t put the ball in the net.
“It was my decision to put Giakoumakis on penalties. He wasn’t on the pitch when we got the last one but he was the designated taker today.”
Livingston manager David Martindale: “It’s probably about the calmest I’ve been in a game. We limited Celtic to crosses from wide areas. I don’t think Max Stryjek – other than the penalty – had a shot to save.
“It would have been an injustice had the penalty gone in. Credit to Max, he’s come up with a big save, and my players didn’t deserve to leave here with nothing. They were brilliant.”
