Summary
(joebloggscity of TheCelticWiki):
Good result but not a great performance. Simply Celtic got out of jail in some respects. Aberdeen were having an easy day as Referee Clancy seemed to have lost his cards to dish in the first half, but still Jota scored a fine goal to put Celtic in front.
However Abada whose form has been slipping conceded a penalty after an unnecessary attempt at a tackle which many actually claim shouldn’t have been give (dive etc). A fortuitous gift of a rebound in the Aberdeen penalty box after some football ping pong in the box led to ex-Celt Johnny Hayes trying to clear his lines only for it to richochet off the backside of McGregor and go into the net! They still all count, and Celtic rode their luck to the final whistle in an unconvincing victory.
A bunch of players out injured, like Rogic, Jullien, Starfelt, Giokamakis, Bitton, Taylor etc didn’t help things today.
However, Jota was outstanding and McCarthy had a fine game. Kyogo unlucky not to score at the death. Usual post-European tie match but players looked flat.
Long way to go and this is a long crazy busy month for Celtic.
Scott Brown returned to Celtic but as an Aberdeen player, but had to come off with a hamstring injury. He was then given the ovation & cheers he deserved which the support couldn’t do last season due to the Covid-lockout of supporters. Much respect to him, and he’ll have loved it too.

That was just a pure battle at Celtic Park today, throwback to games between these two in the early to mid 90s, Celtic look like they’re running on empty at the moment, badly need new faces in the door in January ASAP, Aberdeen put in a good organised shift but created little.
BA:
St Johnstone twice, livi and now a half against Aberdeen. Low block back 5 yielding very little in chance creation for Celtic

Celtic 2-1 Aberdeen: Story of the match as Callum McGregor plays captain’s role scoring winner as Scott Brown limps off old stomping ground
https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/celtic/celtic-2-1-aberdeen-story-of-the-match-as-callum-mcgregor-plays-captains-role-scoring-winner-as-scott-brown-limps-off-old-stomping-ground-3474609
The roundal that covered the centre circle in tribute to Bertie Auld before Celtic’s 2-1 victory over Aberdeen was emblazoned with the words “that’s entertainment”. It was a neat encapsulation of both the midfielder and man whose playing style, whose personality, was so infused with ebullience and effervescence.

In truth, both qualities were then in short supply on a bing-cold day. The first occasion for Celtic, as a club, to honour in their own home the recently departed and beloved Lisbon Lion, it began with the two captains, Callum McGregor and the returning Scott Brown, laying wreaths on a huge number 10 sunk into a green and white hooped design under which read YNWA – the abbreviation for the adopted club motto You’ll Never Walk Alone.
Maybe the sombreness of the scene dribbled into what followed. Long stretches of the afternoon, for both teams, seemed to be about digging deep, battling both edginess and a certain ponderousness that they struggled to keep at bay. Ange Postcoglou’s side certainly did more than enough to merit the victory that closed the gap on Rangers – earlier on 3-1 victors in Livingston – to four points and leap-frogging Hearts into second once more. Yet in betraying huge relief, the deafening howls from the home crowd when five-minutes added time concluded the shrill of referee Kevin Clancy whistle told of the tale of the encounter for the Celtic faithful. The bitsiness over what had been served up to them by their team at times demanded the biting of fingernails; a measure of their side’s in-game form rising and falling in pretty dramatic fashion at times.

The exertions across Celtic’s 3-2 defeat away to Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday evening had clearly left the home side requiring to counter a certain legginess and mental fatigue. Meanwhile, Stephen Glass’s men were attempting to muddle through with a makeshift team as they are required to deal with being without a raft of injured players. The fact a trio of these that would have featured in their back four – Andrew Considine, Calvin Ramsay, Jack McKenzie – were home grown made the starting selection an historic one for the club. It was the first line-up since 1947 not to feature a player reared by the Pittodrie club.

With only two wins in their previous 15, it seemed a stretch to believe Glass’s men the circumstances would allow them replicate their point-claiming efforts from Ibrox last month. Cetic, though, provided them with encouragement by not only struggling to find their rhythm as they have in recent months. They did that by gifting their opponents a penalty. The latter was a consequence of a lazy, needless leg-dangling challenge by Liel Abada on Marley Watkins just after the half hour that was gleefully converted by Lewis Ferguson.
It ensured a 1-1 scorelines at the interval and fears that points could be dropped in a third game out of four in the cinch Premiership in their own environs. It was only an element of fortunes that prevented that scenario unfolding. Celtic’s 60th minute winner was of the scruffy, strange variety. There was deftness in the defence-splitting pass to Abada from James McCarthy, whose fourth start of a largely unproductive first season with his boyhood club definitely marked his most effective contribution.
When Joe Lewis thwarted the on-rushing Abada frm close in, Aberdeen seemed to have survived, only for Jonny Hayes to attempt a clearance that Callum McGregor sought to charge down, with the upshot being the ball bouncing off the Celtic captain’s foot and wrong-footing the Aberdeen keeper. It was that sort of afternoon.
Teams sitting in against them at Celtic Park is starting to seem something of an issue for Postecglou’s team – with points dropped in two of their previous three home league encounters. The runs of Kyogo Furuhashi in behind too often are not proving the trigger for him to be found. Forced wide, where Jota was once again a wriggling, slippery presence for his markers, Aberdeen were reasonably successful ensuring Celtic were forced to play in front of them. At times, they carved the visitors open – in all, the imbalance in general play was reflected by their 20 shots to the four of Aberdeen – but even their deadlock-breaker in 20 minutes required a helpful deflection. A clever flick from David Turnbull allowed McGregor to get the ball under control in behind and when he teed up Jota, the Portuguese winger was able to strike with a drive that grazed the chest of David Bates en route to finding the net.
Jota would also strike the post late on, while McGregor had a stinging drive blocked on the line by the windpipe of Christian Ramirez early in the second period. But Aberdeen never allowed themselves to let their resolve give way to a resignation. That was true even after they lost Brown to a what seemed a hamstring problem midway through the period – his hirpling off accompanied by all four stands chanting “Broonie” in unison – an acknowledgement of a club icon back on the stomping ground he so often owned across a glittering 13-year, 22-honour-claiming career.
And in the added time, Josip Juranovic was forced into a clearance from the goal-line to deny Bates and ensure Celtic did not endure another home slip-up that they simply could not countenance as a December games glut prepares to roll around.

McGregor goal v Aberdeen
Ex-Celtic winger Jonny Hayes’ clearance thudded off Callum McGregor and into the Aberdeen net
Callum McGregor’s bizarre winner earned Celtic victory over Aberdeen and ensured they remain four points behind Scottish Premiership leaders Rangers.
Jota’s finish broke the deadlock on 20 minutes, but Liel Abada’s trip on David Bates allowed Lewis Ferguson to equalise from the spot.
Celtic stepped up the intensity in the second period and scored a fortuitous winner, with a clearance rebounding off McGregor into the net.
The defeat leaves Aberdeen eighth.
Boss Stephen Glass will feel aggrieved at losing in such circumstances after his team delivered a brave defensive display, but the harsh reality is the result extends their losing streak to three games and leaves them 10 points off the top four.
As for Celtic, it is a vital win for Ange Postecoglou’s side as they put Thursday’s Europa League exit behind them to ensure they did not fall further behind Rangers, who defeated Livingston 3-1 earlier on Sunday.
Reaction & as it happened
Scott Brown’s first visit back to Parkhead poignantly came on the first game played at Celtic Park since the passing of club legend Bertie Auld, with the ex-Celtic skipper laying a wreath along with current captain McGregor pre-match.
A banner stating “that’s entertainment” – in tribute to one of Auld’s many memorable quotes – was displayed in the centre circle prior to kick-off, and that is exactly what Postecoglou’s side treated their home fans to with their opener.
Celtic and Aberdeen pay tribute to Lisbon Lion Bertie Auld, who died last week
David Turnbull’s delightful chip found McGregor charging into the box and he slid a pass across to Jota to claim his fifth goal in as many games.
It took the hosts about 15 minutes to get going. An early clash between keeper Joe Hart and Christian Ramirez resulted in lengthy treatment for the home keeper, and that played a part in the game getting off to a slow start.
Apart from one piece of defence-splitting play, Aberdeen’s backline were resolute – and they continued to be after Jota’s opener, allowing Glass’ men to feel their way back into the game.
In their first real effort on goal, Marley Watkins let fly from outside the box and had Hart at full stretch to tip the ball round the far post.
The resulting corner saw the Dons earn a spot-kick when Abada tripped Bates in the box. Ferguson confidently sent Hart the wrong way from 12 yards.
Celtic pushed to regain the lead before half-time, Turnbull again arching a stunning ball into the box only for Stephen Welsh to head over when leaving it for Kyogo was the better option.
Bates, who earlier denied Turnbull with a fantastic block, was then on hand to put his body in the way of a strike from McGregor. But for all Celtic’s possession, there was a lack of urgency and intensity that is often in abundance with Postecoglou’s outfit.
That was rectified in the second period, as both McGregor and Jota saw efforts bravely blocked before Josip Juranovic whistled an effort just wide of the near post.
McGregor’s unorthodox winner soon followed, and while it came with a huge slice of luck, it was merited for the home side’s pressure.
As the Celtic support were still euphoric at their captain restoring the lead, their ex-skipper Brown was departing the field through injury. He came off to a standing ovation, the first time he would have played in front of a Celtic crowd since March 2020.
The hosts could have settled the contest as Anthony Ralston had a header tipped over and Jota rattled the far post after more great work from the Portuguese winger.
But those missed opportunities left the door open for Aberdeen, who pushed for an equaliser and had a Ferguson header cleared off the line by Juranovic.
But Postecoglou’s men held out, despite Kyogo passing up another chance with a near-post finish, meaning the gap at the summit remains at four points going into an intriguing midweek card.
Man of the match – Jota
Jota goal v Aberdeen
The on-loan Benfica winger will need to knock up a new cabinet for his individual accolades this season after another starring performance
What did we learn?
When Jota clicks, Celtic click. Like the rest of his team, the Portuguese forward took until around 15 minutes in to get into his groove. But when the winger turned it on, he had a goal within five minutes of clicking his switch.
With each passing week, the option to buy the Benfica man should be turning into an unofficial obligation from Celtic’s side. The Parkhead hierarchy cannot let this one slip by them.
While Jota’s transfer looks astute business, the decision to recruit James McCarthy stills seems a head-scratcher.
Question marks were raised at the time due to the 31-year-old’s age, injury record and four-year contract – and it cannot even be argued that the midfielder is producing during his time on the pitch.
The ex-Everton midfielder improved after the break, playing a part in McGregor’s winning goal, but too many safe passes and a lack of urgency played a part in Celtic’s below-par first-half display.
Aberdeen are still dealing with square pegs in round holes, with Brown being deployed at centre-back one of them. The injury of the captain adds to a lengthy list featuring the likes of Calvin Ramsay, Jack MacKenzie and Declan Gallagher.
With Glass’ side needing to make up a 10-point deficit on the league’s top four, he needs his key men on the park with a favourable run of fixtures on the horizon.
What did they say?
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “We started brightly and we had chances. After their penalty, it was tight, but we upped our tempo and pace at the right moments and I was confident that we would get the result.
“At the end, they were still sprinting about and trying to win the ball back, so I’m happy with the effort I got from the players.”
Aberdeen manager Stephen Glass: “We didn’t start well gave them the upper hand, they moved it around a lot and they had a lot opportunities.
“The overriding thing is getting beat by the deflection at the end really. You can try to keep it tight, but I don’t think that works with the quality that Celtic have.”
