Celtic back to earth with a thud after the great league cup final win last Sunday. Regardless of the fact that Celtic were missing many players due to injury, St Mirren were also reduced albeit to covid issues, Celtic were simply abject and mostly impotent in attack. St Mirren almost stole the show with a winner, with Celtic despite the incredible possession stats could not break down a resilient St Mirren side.
Congrats to St Mirren manager (and ex-Celt) Jim Goodwin on a great result in the circumstances for them, and he was actually at the Celtic game with his wee son to take in the game last Sunday.
Their squad wasn’t “ravaged” they made 4 changes, most affected was bench with all youngsters….Celtic was hit too don’t forget but we have more resource to deal with that…that said SM tactically stuck to a plan
The days leading to this game had been taken up by talk of St Mirren wanting to postpone this game and if winter break should have been brought forward. In retrospect, it should have been. Poor result for Celtic, and shows the need for further review of the squad.
(fatboab of KDS)
Costly night .
Poor performance all round, not really anyone who stood out. All a bit slow and predictable. It’s been coming, so we shouldn’t be too surprised, but our abject failure to break down a poor team who had absolutely no ambition other than to minimise the damage is worrying.
Number of games, lack of squad depth etc etc are all mitigating circumstances, but if we have to have any chance of winning the League, we simply have to find a way to leave these places with all the points.
I’ll pass on Moffat and Abada for now due to inexperience and youth, but Mikey Johnson has to be offloaded. On a night where he should have shone, he was abysmal. He’s had his chances, it’s not happening.
Elsewhere, Scales looked poor, McGregor and Rogic were posted missing and Ralston looked like the player he really is.
January is crucial in the development of Ange’s dream team. We simply can’t afford to get it wrong, and we certainly can’t afford to fall any further behind.
At the end of a week that gave us so much to cheer about, this was a crushing disappointment.
Twitter:
Celtic have dropped 2 points since November and won our first trophy of the season. The squad has been riddled with injuries. This is not a disaster. January transfer window to get some depth in the squad. A lot of over reactions on here tonight, Some perspective needed.
Desperately poor display from #Celtic -80%+ of the ball & very few ideas on how to pierce Saints packed rearguard. Yet again the build-up was pedestrian & predictable.Too many attempts to pass through their cluttered central defence.A bad night after good news on the winter break
Tough one tonight. Not enough creativity despite all the possession.
A reminder just how thin the squad is and how over dependent we are on a select few players.
We’ve seen this game too many times this season. All possession, no effective penetration. Winning the corner count though. Needs a moment of inspiration (a stroke of luck will do)
Saw the failing with Angeball tonight. Too many times this season mediocre teams line up defensive formation and we cannot break them down. Absolutely no plan B. Rogic showing why I would have punted him 3 years ago. Johnston can go at the end of the season and won’t be missed.
A safe, cowardly, side-to-side performance. It allowed St Mirren to stay compact. At least if you take a risk and it doesn’t pay off, you pull the other team out of shape while they chase the ball. How many more of these will we endure before the coaches come up with a plan?
A gobsmacking point for depleted St Mirren against a Kyogo-less Celtic. I didn’t see that coming, to put it mildly. Fantastic result for Jim Goodwin and his players after a tough few days. Sore one for Celtic. They’re reliant on Kyogo to an unhealthy degree.

“Too laboured, too predictable, and lacking in imagination,” David Potter

Well, we could have done with this game NOT being played after all, couldn’t we? It was a dreadful match played in dreadful conditions and you just had to feel sorry for the poor fans who had to watch that in that boring and rather uninteresting stadium.
Frankly, although you can never rule anything out, I never felt that Celtic were going to get the breakthrough. Too laboured, too predictable, and lacking in imagination. One has to give St Mirren a little credit for defending so well, and let’s hope they can do the same on Sunday against (the)Rangers.
It is all the more disappointing for two reasons. One was that we were, rightly, on a high after Sunday’s great triumph, and the other was that we have been here before. I had feelings of deja-vu for I had seen that against Livngston and (to a lesser extent) Dundee United at Parkhead this season, and frankly, we are now at the stage that if we cannot break down a packed defence, we will, quite simply, not win the League.
We still have time on our side, but it is slipping away. We really have to beat St Johnstone in front of 500 Perth people on Boxing Day, or else we must watch the League slipping away.
Dean Lyness of St Mirren at full stretch
So how do we do it? Well, certainly not by the methods we employed tonight. We needed our oriental talisman (who should have had the last 30 minutes, I feel) and the finger must be pointed at Johnston and Abada in particular for their shortcomings tonight. They really have to be better than they were. Chances were there, but they were not taken, and there is no point in saying things like “St.Mirren are ruining football”.
No, we have to make them see that they are ruining football by scoring against them! We really have to do the unusual things, and we have to score in the first half, and make them come out at us. We have to expect something similar at St Johnstone on Sunday, and this time there is no leeway. We absolutely must score goals.
Joe Shaughnessey of St Mirren gets to grips with Liel Abada of Celtic in the penalty box
Tonight, I felt that McGregor or Rogic might with a bit of luck, have done the needful, but I had little belief in anyone else. Greg Taylor was brought on when it was too late. Owen Moffat looks the part and he is certainly worth persevering with, and Liam Shaw, of whom we have seen very little up to now, is also worth another go. The defence we cannot criticise, for they had little to defend against.
I rather enjoyed the somewhat bucolic and blatantlyand unashamedly biased St Mirren TV commentary, (although we heard an awful lot of foul language from the crowd) and it was good to see Frank McGarvey again. Not many people have won Cup medals for both Celtic and St Mirren, but Frank has.
At one point he seemed to say that he had never played the card game of pontoon. Of course not, Frank! And he was honest enough to say that he wanted both teams to get three points tonight! ‘Fraid not, Frank, only one and it does far more good to St Mirren than it does Celtic!
A dejected Stephen Welsh of Celtic leave the park with Celtic Manager Angelos Postecoglou
So we have to beat the other Saints on Sunday…or the League is beginning to disappear. No-one was more delighted than I was at our triumph on Sunday, but we must now draw strength from it (the sight of green and white ribbons on silver!) and gird ourselves for the League challenge, We really cannot have very many more games like tonight.
Oh, and a Merry Christmas to everyone!

Jim Goodwin admits he wanted St Mirren board to defy SPFL and refuse to play Celtic
St Mirren manager Jim Goodwin revealed he urged his club’s board to refuse to fulfil their fixture against Celtic on Wednesday night.

https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/celtic/jim-goodwin-admits-he-wanted-st-mirren-board-to-defy-spfl-and-refuse-to-play-celtic-3504977
The Paisley club had their request to postpone the game rejected by the SPFL despite having 11 players ruled out because of Covid-related issues.
As it was, Goodwin’s under-strength side dug deep to claim a precious point from a battling 0-0 draw.
But he believed they would have been on solid legal ground if they had declined to take the field and incurred a 3-0 forfeit defeat. Last season, St Mirren successfully challenged two such SPFL decisions against them when 3-0 wins awarded to Motherwell and Hamilton were overturned by a Scottish FA judicial panel.
“Yeah, it was my recommendation to the board that we should refuse to play Celtic tonight,” said Goodwin.
“But I think the sanctions and ramifications for the club would have been difficult. We won a legal battle last year when they tried to take points off us. I felt we could have done the same again.
“Nobody at St Mirren wants to cancel games willy nilly, but these are extreme circumstances.
“If we only have three or four positives, it’s a different situation – but we had 11 positives and were still waiting for two results before the game.
“Thankfully we were able to free up a few of our players who were deemed close contacts on Tuesday.”
Goodwin was without a raft of key players, including goalkeeper Jak Alnwick and midfielders Alan Power and Jamie McGrath. He had to draft three teenagers into his starting line-up, including 17-year-old debutant Kieran Offord who was recalled from a loan at Lowland League side East Stirlingshire.
The Saints’ bench was completely composed of players who had never tasted first team action before.
“It doesn’t matter now what we could or should have done,” added Goodwin. “It’s an incredible result, up there with the best points St Mirren have had in the Premiership.
“I take no credit for that. Every player, to a man, deserves the credit. We trained once in six days, we didn’t do shape.
“Some of the boys only really met each other a few hours before the game. I am so proud of them.”
Ange Postecoglou points to ‘violin playing’ as he reacts to Celtic v Rangers fixture change and possible Kyogo and Rogic absences
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou insists he won’t be lamenting the possible absence of key duo Kyogo Furuhashi and Tom Rogic from the rescheduled Old Firm match.

https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/celtic/ange-postecoglou-points-to-violin-playing-as-he-reacts-to-celtic-v-rangers-fixture-change-and-possible-kyogo-and-rogic-absences-3504974
The SPFL’s decision to bring forward the winter break amid tightening Covid restrictions in Scotland and postpone two rounds of Premiership fixtures means Celtic’s home game against Rangers has been put back a month to February 2.
Furuhashi and Rogic are both set to be on World Cup qualifying duty that week with Japan and Australia respectively. But Postecoglou made it clear he has no intention of bemoaning that potential disruption to his plans.
“If they get called up they will be,” said Postecoglou. “There is a lot of violin playing around the place, we are not going to be one of them.
“I am very supportive of our club’s stance (in calling for the break to be brought forward). It makes sense to me to use the natural break.
“I have said all along that fans are an integral part of this game. If having that break gives us a chance, without guarantees, to get them back in, it’s much better. I don’t like playing closed doors – fans are an important part home and away.”
Postecoglou also had no excuses for Celtic’s failure to make the most of their game in hand on Rangers in the title race as they were held 0-0 by St Mirren in Paisley. They are now six points behind the defending champions.
“We should have won the game,” he said. “We created enough chances and we dominated but we lacked quality in the final third to finish them off.
“It wasn’t a night when everything went right for St Mirren because we did a lot wrong. It wasn’t all good defending from them, it was also our own finishing.
“We had enough chances to win a few games. If you don’t take them, that’s what you get.
“It’s not down to personnel. We had good chances for the guys out there to take them.
“We should have won and if we’d had more composure and people had been stronger in their intent, we would have done.”
Asked if the result underlined Celtic’s need to sign new players in January, Postecoglou replied: “Look, that’s been evident for a long time now, that we need a stronger squad. That’s not just tonight.
“That’s not why we didn’t win tonight, we should have won tonight, we had enough of the ball, we had enough possession, we had enough chances, irrespective of all the other factors.
“Even if we had won tonight it doesn’t stop the fact that at the moment we have got 11 guys who are injured. Any squad would have been challenged by that.
“But for me I still think we haven’t had enough quality in the squad to be able to rotate players through a heavy schedule. That isn’t surprising. It was always going to take more than one window to get the squad we wanted. That is logical. Tonight doesn’t change things.”
St Mirren 0-0 Celtic: Covid-hit Saints hand Ange Postecoglou’s men a setback in title race
From a match they didn’t want to play, St Mirren earned as precious and unlikely a point as they will claim all season.

On a dramatic evening which put a dent in Celtic’s pursuit of Rangers at the top of the Premiership table, Jim Goodwin’s side set aside their Covid-related personnel problems to mount a remarkable rearguard action.
With teenagers Dylan Reid, Jay Henderson and debutant Kieran Offord all pressed into action, St Mirren performed heroically to soak up all of the pressure Celtic placed upon them. The home team’s exceptional defensive display was inspired by captain Joe Shaughnessy was exceptional at the heart of their back four.

It was a hugely frustrating evening for Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou and his players who find themselves six points behind Rangers having now played the same number of games as the defending champions.
Dean Lyness, making his first league appearance since February, was another one of the less familiar faces in the Saints’ line-up.
The English goalkeeper was unsurprisingly prominent as the action generally flowed in the direction of his penalty area and he showed no signs of rustiness with a series of fine saves throughout.
In the initial stages, Lyness denied Mikey Johnston, Nir Bitton and Callum McGregor as Celtic tried to impose their authority on the contest as quickly as possible.
While the pre-match build-up had been largely dominated by St Mirren’s problems, Postecoglou had significant selection issues of his own amid a lengthening injury list and the suspension of central defender Carl Starfelt.
Celtic, in fact, made more changes to their starting eleven than their hosts – six in total, the absentees including League Cup Final winning hero Kyogo Furuhashi. Among those coming in were 19-year-old winger Owen Moffat to make his maiden first team start.
Saints found opportunities to get out of their own half limited but they did cause the Celtic defence some alarm 10 minutes before half-time with an inswinging corner from Scott Tanser. The ball dropped to Joe Shaughnessy whose close range effort was scrambled wide.
The pattern changed little in the second half and Lyness remained equal to everything Celtic could muster, albeit Johnston should have done better than fire a close range volley straight at him.
Chances continued to come and go for the visitors, McGregor passing up a couple he would have expected to do better with, while Liel Abada carried little presence as the central striker in their attack.
Scott Bain was a spectator for most of the evening but had to make one save in the 69th minute from Curtis Main after Henderson had mounted a rare counter-attack for Saints.
There were seven minutes of stoppage time but unlike seven days earlier in Dingwall, Celtic couldn’t find a late winner. The final whistle prompted celebrations among the home players and supporters while the Celtic fans were forced to digest an unanticipated setback.
St Mirren (3-5-2): Lyness, Fraser, Shaughnessy, Dunne; Millar, Reid, Henderson, Kiltie, Tanser; Offord (McManus 87), Main. Subs not used: Urminsky, Taylor, Jack, MacDonald, Kenny.
Celtic (4-2-3-1): Bain, Ralston, Carter-Vickers, Welsh, Scales (Taylor 89); Bitton (Shaw 80), McGregor; Johnston, Rogic, Moffat (Juranovic 61); Abada. Subs not used: Hazard, McCarthy, Henderson, Montgomery.

St Mirren held out for a point in a game they didn’t want to play
Celtic followed their League Cup triumph with a shock Scottish Premiership slip-up as they were held by Covid-weakened St Mirren in Paisley.
The visitors, who won the first trophy of the Ange Postecoglou era on Sunday, could not find a way past inspired stand-in goalkeeper Dean Lyness.
The surprise draw ends Celtic’s six-game league winning run and leaves them six points behind leaders Rangers.
St Mirren, in ninth, are four points clear of bottom club St Johnstone.
The hosts started with three teenagers in a game they twice tried to have called off after 11 players tested positive, but emerged with a remarkable point despite Celtic’s 31 shots and 83% possession.
Reaction & as it happened
Premiership’s winter break brought forward
Celtic can point to personnel problems of their own, with an injury list stretching into double figures and cup final match-winner Kyogo Furuhashi a notable absentee.
But the stalemate – in their last game before crowds are temporarily capped at 500 – is a huge blow to Celtic’s title hopes as the rearranged winter break beckons.
St Mirren manager Jim Goodwin hailed “the best point this club have had for a long time” and revealed some of his young players hadn’t even met their senior colleagues before the game.
“It was an incredible performance from the team – they gave everything for the jersey,” said Goodwin.
“Sometimes managers get credit, but I can’t take a great deal of credit for that. They came out fighting when it seemed the whole world was against us. The kids deserve a special mention.”
Kyogo’s movement and finishing prowess were sorely lacking for the visitors as they failed to turn a barrage of pressure into a breakthrough.
Lyness – on just his third start in two-and-a-half years with St Mirren – impressively tipped a first-half Nir Bitton free-kick wide and denied Mikey Johnston a solo goal after the winger jinked past three players.
Johnston had a close-range effort cleared off the line by Joe Shaughnessy after the break, while Liel Abada and Callum McGregor also found Lyness an unpassable barrier and Josip Juranovic shaved a post with a free-kick.
But Celtic ran out of ideas and were repelled by a heroic defensive effort from Goodwin’s side, whose youthful bench did not have a first-team appearance between them.
The home team gave Celtic a couple of scares too. Shaughnessy had a close-range header deflected just wide and Curtis Main forced a save from Scott Bain, who was deputising for Joe Hart.
Those were rare moments of respite but the Paisley men continually put their bodies on the line amid a succession of shots and crosses to claim a memorable point.
Man of the match – Dean Lyness
Dean Lyness
St Mirren’s makeshift side all put a tireless shift in but English keeper Lyness gets the nod for a clean sheet he’ll cherish
What did we learn?
St Mirren are now 10 games without a win – but their fans rightly celebrated a massive result.
The Paisley club were reluctant participants, with Goodwin saying the SPFL “bent the loan rules” so six under-18 players could be recalled from Lowland League clubs to fill out the squad.
He had little option but to put trust in untried youth and was rewarded with a performance full of energy, passion, and commitment.
Captain Shaughnessy shone at the heart of a defence under huge pressure, while teenagers Dylan Reid, Jay Henderson and debutant Kieran Offord can be proud of their showings.
Celtic escaped with a last-gasp winner in their previous Premiership outing at Ross County, but were unable to repeat the trick.
Nineteen-year-old striker Owen Moffat, making his first start, proved an ineffectual deputy for Kyogo and Celtic struggled to penetrate St Mirren’s low defensive block.
With David Turnbull joining Jota and James Forrest on the sidelines, Postecoglou’s squad lacks the depth to cope without so many key attacking players.
What did they say?
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “It’s a game we should have won and we created enough opportunities to do that, we dominated.
“We just lacked a little bit of composure and quality in the front third. The expectations of this club are that you go in every game to win and the payers are disappointed – as they should be. ”
