Match Pictures | Matches: 20212022

Trivia

  • KO: 19:45 Monday; first game of the calendar year; Celtic TV PPV
  • Rearranged match from 29th Dec due to the change in the winter break brought forward following introduction of new covid restrictions in Scotland.
  • Sevco drop 2pts the next day in 1-1 draw with Aberdeen, so Celtic now back to 4pts behind Sevco, both on 21 games. Sevco finally concede a penalty and have a man sent off! Incredibly around two years ago was last time a Sevco player sent off domestically (a number though in Europe, say’s it all!).
  • Debuts for Reo Hatate and Daizen Maeda from the start, Ideguchi came on late as a sub for a debut. MOTM from Hatate and goal for Maeda! Jota returns from injury. Kyogo still out injured.
  • Covid Restrictions on large outdoor events in Scotland, including football matches and concerts, are lifted allowing fans to return to stadiums with the end of the winter break (moved forward).
  • In retrospect, the decision, driven by Premiership clubs, to bring forward the winter break appears now to be vindicated.
  • First meeting since recent League Cup final which Celtic won. Some bad blood from  Hibbees.
  • First match v Celtic for new Hibs manager and ex-Celtic player Shaun Maloney.
  • US Actor Jon Hamm (star of hit TV show Mad Men) at the Celtic game tonight!
  • Turnbull out for two months with hamstring injury.
  • Celtic team up with Hibernian on a fantastic initiative delivering a joint Audio Descriptive commentary on this match. Excellent stuff.
  • Second tier Kilmarnock appoint Derek McInnes as new manager.
  • Ex Celt loanee Benkovic cut by Leicester with 18mths left on contract, moves to Udinese!  Leicester 13m down the drain on Benkovic with not a single EPL appearance!
  • Celtic ‘add former Benfica data analystAntoine Ortega to their sports science team
  • Boxing: Kash Farooq: Shock retirement at just 26 for Scottish bantamweight boxer. He’s also a Celtic fan.
  • Darts: Scotland’s Peter Wright wins PDC World Darts Championship title for second time. Congrats
  • UK Politics: PM Boris Johnson under continued pressure to resign, latest incident: he admitted attending a drinks party during lockdown at same time telling everyone in the country on-air to stay home and away from others & family. This included being at parties night before the funeral of the Queen’s husband!
  • Andrew Rosindell, Conservative MP, urged the Govt to get public broadcasters to play God Save The Queen at end of every day! Righty gets heavily mocked for it on social media.
  • Films: Sidney Poitier: Hollywood legend & trailblazer for the black actor fraternity dies aged 94. RIP
  • Former Celtic managerial prospect Eddie Howe having a poor start to time with Newcastle (lost to 3rd tier Cambridge in FA Cup).
  • Former Celtic managerial candidate Rafa Benitez sacked by Everton.

Transfer Window is open:

  • Young Celt, Jude Bonnar, signs first professional contract with Celtic.
  • Ewan Henderson signs to Hibs (loan till Summer then 3 year permanent).
  • Liam Shaw sent to M’well for loan till end of season.
  • Johnny Kenny signed from Sligo Rovers
  • Celtic knockback offer to loan out (with option to convert) for Stephen Welsh to Udinese (Serie A Italy).
  • Australian footballer Riley McGree snubs move to Celtic to join English Championship side Middlesbrough!
  • Leigh Griffiths faces the prospect of being without a club in February after Celtic are reportedly terminating his contract. He will remain on loan at Dundee until the end of this month (they were reportedly terminating it early) but will then be allowed to leave Celtic Park on a free when the transfer window closes. We wish him the best. Post-Match: reports now stating Dundee will retain him for the second half of the season.
  • Scott Bain has signed a new #CelticFC contract extension until the summer of 2024

Summary

“It’s been a big part of my first six months that the supporters really got behind the team, which is the most important thing for me.”
Ange Postecoglou

After an early scare where Hibs somehow missed a sitter, Celtic quickly scored and thereafter looked comfortable going forward with Hibs gifting Celtic a second with a unarguable penalty.

The stars of the show were the two Japanese players Hatate and Maeda, with Maeda scoring and Hatate putting on a MOTM performance with a sublime performance controlling the game well.

However, that shouldn’t over the shadow that the second half was mostly forgettable as Celtic squandered to convert control into chances. also set pieces continue to be a shambles!

Lots of good tonight but improvements also in certain areas.

Twitter:

Bhoys analytics: Very comfortable performance from Celtic. Hibs really provided nothing outside the miss at the beginning of the game.Good debut for the 3 new players Squad depth issue at 8/10 fairly apparent near the end and needs addressed before the window ends

Agent Scotland: Strong showing from Celtic tonight, they won the game in the first 45 and that first half performance without Kyogo and Jota would’ve been unthinkable even just a few weeks ago, Maeda got his goal & led the line well, Hatate put on a masterclass and was well deserving of the MotM

Tom English : Very comfortable for Celtic. Excellent first half and then saw it through in the second. Hatate looked class in the first 45. Just a lovely footballer. His versatility is exceptional.

Celtic 2-0 Hibs extras: Josip Juranovic and special 1975 connection, Willie Collum misfortune, Hamming up Jock Stein on big screen

HAVE YOUR SAY

Man of the match

It was impossible not to be captivated by classy showing of Celtic debutant Reo Hatate, the midfielder’s inventive, immaculate passing and working of the angles with his darting runs suggesting a Callum McGregor-a-like. Yet, amid a clutch of impressive performers in the home ranks, Josip Juranovic’s endeavours demanded equal commendation. The Croatian was like a man possessed in bombing around the pitch, and effectively transformed from right-back, to right-winger and right-sided attacker over seconds so ubiquitous was his presence.

Then there is the fact the 26-year-old is a mean penalty taker. His third conversion from the spot may not have been as eye-catching as his Paneka in Leverkusen – his manager Ange Postecoglou might say mercifully – but the conviction with which he drilled low to send Matt Macey the wrong way means surely he has those duties on a permanent basis. A player with special talents, if he is the designated taker, it would place the 26-year-old in a special category when you recall that not since Roy Aitken in 1975 have these duties at Celtic been the preserve of a defender.

Turning point

Hmmm, we wonder…not. It would be a shock if Kevin Nisbet got a wink of sleep last night. His preposterous clanger in scuffing the ball against the far post when a mere couple of yards out, and with the goal entirely at his mercy, is the sort that could haunt for weeks. It was a miss for the ages, and with Celtic going in front only a minute after this extraordinary third-minute let off, it was all of the “big moment” Hibs manager Shaun Maloney lamented afterwards.

Letdown

Celtic’s decision to break with precedent and offer the game on pay-per-view basis – to capitalise on the huge interest in their trio of Japanse acquisitions Reo Hatate, Daizen Maeda, no doubt – might have allowed for an audience way beyond the 60,000 pumped-up punters inside Parkhead. We love the old “great advert for Scottish football” line though, and this would have been a corker to be beamed across all territories by Sky. Sometimes, our game can seem a little small-time and unsexy compared with its equivalent down south. Not last night.

Referee watch

Sympathy is rarely extended to Willie Collum. He deserved a little last night for being on the wrong side of a crucial call in the 25th minute. On first viewing, the penalty he awarded looked to follow Josh Doig dubiously moving his arm towards the ball as Liel Abada attempted to flick it over him in the box. Television replays showed, in fact, the defender’s hand had been in a pretty natural position and the ball had hit his arm after first grazing off his chest. There was no intent and, though many don’t seem to get it, intent is required for a penalty to be awarded. The rules of penalty handballs are the most misapplied in the game. So many punters and pundits just don’t seem to get that the ball striking hand in the box isn’t a penalty as a matter of course, and likewise if it strikes the hand in an unnatural position (this only offering a guide to possible intent). Collum will know, but he didn’t serve the principles, unwittingly.

Gave us a giggle

It always feels incongruous to see a Hollywood A-lister in the earthy surrounds of a Scottish football game and so it was with the Celtic Park directors’ box presence of the urbane Jon Hamm, who brought to life the complex Don Draper in televisual classic Mad Men. It did raise a thought. With his slicked back hair and commanding presence, Hamm could be perfect to portray Jock Stein in that long overdue committing of the Lisbon Lions incredible exploits to celluloid.

Celtic live up to hype as headline acts sparkle against Hibs in 2-0 win – but what about the real letdown at Parkhead

So intense was the hype surrounding the Celtic Park return of top flight football, of an Ange Postecoglou squad bolstered with a trio of Japanese signings, of a full crowd, of Shaun Maloney to his old club, it seemed impossible for the occasion to deliver on it.

Daizen Maeda put Celtic 1-0 up after just four minutes.
Daizen Maeda put Celtic 1-0 up after just four minutes.

And yet, somehow, it did, even if the 2-0 winning margin for Celtic is pretty much a regulation outcome when it comes to them hosting the Edinburgh club.

Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate will be considered the headline acts. It could be no other way when first impressions from the new Celtic arrivals were as all they could have hoped for. A goal four minutes into his debut, filling the central striker vacated by the injured Kyogo Furuhashi, made that so for the scamping, grafting Maeda. Midfielder Hatate, meanwhile, exhibited an assurance and range of passing that allowed him to slot in neatly as aider-and-abetter to Tom Rogic in the playmaking duties.

Indeed, the encounter was an ensemble piece in which there were the diamonds and the rogues. Into the latter category came Kevin Nisbet. For all that Postecoglou’s men were worthy winners, the enterprise with which Maloney was willing to approach his sternest test following two wins at the helm could have given him a perfect Parkhead start. It didn’t because Nisbet, only three minutes in, was guilty of a preposterous miss, a logic-defying aberration. Two yards out between the post, and with Joe Hart prone after misjudging the flight of Chris Cadden cross, the forward had the whole goal into which he could roll the ball, only to jab it against the far upright.
Josip Juranovic converted a 25th-minute penalty to move Celtic further ahead.
Josip Juranovic converted a 25th-minute penalty to move Celtic further ahead.

The punishment for Hibs was swift, and in the realms of more self harm. Josh Campbell got in fankle in possession down Hibs’ left channel, which allowed Rogic to engineer an opening by coolly picking out Maeda. The striker didn’t make the cleanest or strongest contact at the front post, but he still befuddled Hibs keeper Matt Macey, who got a touch but couldn’t prevent the low effort sliding behind him.

Celtic’s inter-changes, both with the ball and positionally, meant they conducted all manner of raids on the Hibs’ goal. Yet, the visitors, without producing much real penetration, had the bravery to play from deep and keep hold of the ball. Indeed, in doing so, they became the first Scottish side to out-possess Postecoglou’s men in their own environs, with a 54-46 split in their favour.

It was never going to count for anything, though, because the quickly found themselves 2-0 down. The clincher ensued from Liel Abada jinking into the box, and flicking the ball over the head of Josh Doig only for it to come off the defender’s out-stretched arm. Following a second’s hesitation, referee Willie Collum pointed to the spot, and Josip Juranovic emphatically swept the spot-kick into the left hand-corner of Macy’s net.

On a night when the pre-match atmosphere was so pumped up, the ambience resembled a European night in Glasgow’s east end, all levels dropped midway into the second period as Hibs’ became more blunted and Celtic’s effervescence dropped. The biggest roars late on were reserved for the changes made by the Celtic manager. The acclaim for Jota, appearing for the later stages for a first appearance since pulling a hamstring in early December, just eclipsed the reception given to Celtic’s other January Japanese arrival, Yosuke Ideguchi.

Highlights: Celtic 2-0 Hibernian

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou says debutant midfielder Reo Hatate “has his eyes on reaching the very top” after starring in his side’s Scottish Premiership win over Hibernian.

Fellow debutant and Japanese countryman Daizen Maeda opened the scoring after four minutes before Josip Juranovic’s penalty doubled the hosts’ lead.

Reo was key in Celtic’s controlled display and Postecoglou believes there is more to come from his new signing.

“He’ll make his own mark,” he said.

Speaking to BBC Scotland, the Celtic boss added: “He’s a very talented young player and he’s a very determined young man. He’s got his eyes on reaching the very top of football and we’re glad to have him at our club at the moment.”

The win stretches Celtic’s unbeaten league run to 15 games and narrows the gap on leaders Rangers, who travel to Aberdeen on Tuesday, to three points.

As for Hibs, who remain fifth, boss Shaun Maloney’s first managerial defeat comes at his former club after back-to-back victories before the winter break.

Reaction & as it happened

Football has a habit of moving quickly, and the fact Celtic’s League Cup final triumph over Hibs was only four weeks ago is evidence of that.

Given both sides had played two games each following the final before a three-week winter shutdown, onlookers would be forgiven for assuming the showpiece event was further in the distance.

Hibs have a new boss in their dugout, while four debutants across both teams were treated to their first taste of Scottish football.

And it was Celtic’s debutant striker Daizen who notched early after a lightning start to the game.

In truth, the Japanese striker should not have had the chance to sweep in. Not just because of Hibs’ slack play, which allowed Tom Rogic to slide the ball across to the forward who had acres of space in the box to finish low, but also due to Kevin Nisbet’s incredible miss moments earlier.

Chris Cadden’s low cross found the Hibs striker free at the back post with the goal to aim at, but the Scotland cap went with his wrong foot and clipped the far post.

Daizen’s opener spooked Hibs and fuelled Celtic’s electric tempo as Postecoglou’s men hunted in packs for a second.

A spell of relentless pressure resulted in the home side being awarded a penalty when Greg Taylor’s stunning ball over the top was plucked out the sky by Liel Abada, with the winger’s first touch coming off the outstretched arm of Josh Doig.

Referee Willie Collum pointed to the spot, allowing Juranovic to slot into the bottom-right corner.

A rare venture forward from Hibs led to dangerous shots from Nisbet and Josh Campbell blocked, but Maloney’s men were creating their own problems in defence.

The impressive Reo had a half-volley parried away by Matt Macey before James Forrest’s deflected effort whistled past the far post.

Celtic searched for a third after the break as Reo slashed wide from close range and Carl Starfelt’s flick-on resulted in Abada sliding an effort off the back post.

But the home side’s performance became more about control with the second half progressing and Celtic saw out the game comfortably.
Man of the match – Reo Hatate

What did we learn?

Throughout the first half of the campaign, Celtic’s attacking threat was often blunt without talisman Kyogo Furuhashi leading the line.

A lack of intensity was always evident without the Japanese forward, but fellow countryman Daizen looks like he will provide a similar impact.

The forward’s lightning pace and movement offers Postecoglou a like-for-like profile and more depth in his frontline, something that had previously been badly lacking.

Midfielder Reo’s introduction will also offer optimism to the Celtic boss, as well as the return of influential winger Jota, as the Parkhead side look to hunt down leaders Rangers.

Hibs’ depleted backline was always going to struggle at Celtic Park, and could have caved after the break, but Maloney’s defence were masters of their own downfall in the first half.

Continually they gave the ball away cheaply in dangerous areas, but patience will be required as the former Belgium assistant coach adapts his style of play.
What did they say?

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “I think we were in control for the whole 90 minutes. We started the game with really good energy and tempo and we could have had one or two more if we weren’t as wasteful.

“Second half we didn’t create as much, but we were still in control. That’s the balancing act of having a few weeks’ break, they were fresh and ready but maybe a bit rusty in a few areas.”

Hibernian manager Shaun Maloney: “I have mixed feelings about that one, definitely some things to improve on, but very, very pleased with parts of the game.

“It was a big test for our players with Celtic going ahead early. We need to be more aggressive when we do get through their line of pressure, but that’s for me to work on, I’m the coach.”
What’s next?

Both sides embark on their Scottish Cup quests next time out as Hibernian host League 1 leaders Cove Rangers on Thursday (19:45 GMT) live on BBC Scotland while Celtic travel to Alloa Athletic on Saturday (17:30).

Celtic 2 Hibs 0…

Welcome back to everyone! It’s been a long three weeks, but it was worth the wait. It was a comfortable albeit far from spectacular win, but enough to allow everyone to leave Celtic Park with a smile on their face. It was never a game that I felt we were ever like losing, and usually I am exceptionally neurotic about even a two goal lead. We just seemed to be in command with Carter-Vickers and Starfeld gobbling up everything that came down the middle.

Occasionally, Joe Hart scares me with his kicking and general brinksmanship, but there are few better shot stoppers around. Hibs only real moment came when they hit the post just before Celtic scored.

As for our new friends from the Orient, I don’t know what they made of Celtic Park on their first appearance there, but it fair sent the goose bumps going on me, and I’ve been coming here for nearly 60 years now! The atmosphere, particularly at the start, almost compels players to do well, and Daizen Maeda had his dream start after some good work form Tom Rogic.

Then our favourite Uncle. Uncle Willie, gave us a penalty (correctly, I think, although we would have moaned like hell and talked about handshakes and conspiracies if it had been the other way round) which Josip Juranovic (my Man Of The Match) never looked as he was going to miss.

The Japanese players all played well – Maeda took his goal well and I love the way he kept harrying the goalkeeper, Reo Hatate looks a real class act with some absolutely visionary passing, and although we saw less of Ideguchi, we saw enough to makes us think there is something there as well.

There were no real failures. Greg Taylor occasionally gets caught out of position, and should possibly stick to his wing more, but everyone else.played their part, as did the Parkhead crowd who have clearly been suffering the same withdrawal symptoms that I have.

It is now time for a serious assault on the Scottish League. Clearly Aberdeen can do us a favour tonight, but even if they don’t, the League is still within our reach if we play like we did. And the Scottish Cup and the Europa Conference are very winable tournaments. But Alloa first on Saturday. Don’t anyone underestimate them! Remember Clyde, Inverness, Arthurlie etc….”
