An uncomfortable performance with the disappointing performance overshadowed by two fine goals. Giakoumakis scored to give him a boost with Abada scoring a fine curler just before the end of the first half. However despite the superiority of Celtic on many levels (squad players fitness) there’s no denying Alloa made things difficult for Celtic who continue to fail to convert opportunities into goals.
Some rough challenges causing concern with McGregor taken off after a knock which the manager admitted looked significant.
Credit to Alloa who gave Celtic a scare with a late goal that led to an uncomfortable final quarter of an hour in the match but thankfully didn’t grab a second.

We just are not ruthless enough and then seem to take our foot off the pedal in games. I wish we would shoot more and move our transition game alot quicker, we seem to hold the ball that extra bit waiting for the perfect pass. A number of times we turn the ball back on the wing and restart again. As good as our defensive statistics are domestically, that was really a soft goal. In fact most of the goals scored against us seem like they come from crosses and should be dealt with better.
Two new forwards in GG and Maeda that showed alot of promise. Im optimistic that a sharper GG probably scores that header, he will probably get a good run of games with all the injuries. He does provide a physical presence in the box which we need. Maeda has good movement and is elusive. I thought McCarthy did well and gives us a harder tackling option. A physical encounter like this he probably should have started. His passing is alot better than people are willing to give him credit for. The tackle on Ideguchi was horrendous, he’s lucky he didnt get his knee done in, and it looks like he took a knock on his ankle as well. I hope he bounces back soon. Rogic was quieter than usual. Scales is coming along and is a solid signing. Alloa’s players were sticking a late boot in all match, it was ridiculous.
McGregor is a big loss, there’s alot to his game off the ball and he’s always in the right place at the right time. Reo Hatate will have a big role to play in his absence, judging from his first game he covers every blade of grass.
Ange: “I think Liel Abada and Ideguchi should be okay. Callum is the one we’re most concerned about. We’ll just have to wait and see but it looks like it is significant.”
Ange: “It wasn’t a great night overall. We played ok. We got a couple of injuries. Callum looks significant. Should have been quicker in the first half. We should have taken our chances and been comfortable. Ultimately we got through and that’s the most important thing”. #Celtic

Celtic booked their place in the Scottish Cup fifth round with a 2-1 win win over Alloa which ended with a hint of nerves for the Parkhead side.
First-half goals from Greek striker Giorgos Giakoumakis and winger Liel Abada had the Hoops comfortably ahead by the interval against the cinch League One side at the Indodrill Stadium.
That former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson was the hosts’ manager added spice to a tie which became interesting when Alloa striker Conor Sammon’s header reduced the deficit with 12 minutes left.
Celtic denied their hosts any clear-cut opportunities to draw level but their victory came at some cost for Ange Postecoglou as skipper Callum McGregor, Abada and Yosuke Ideguchi had to go off with various injuries.
Postecoglou made five changes from the team that beat Hibernian 2-0 on Monday with Japan’s Ideguchi making his first start and Liam Scales, Anthony Ralston, Stephen Welsh and Giakoumakis back in the side.
Alloa, eighth in League One, started with some purpose and had a chance in the third minute when Sammon spotted Hoops goalkeeper Joe Hart off his line but his attempted chip from long range sailed high over the bar.
There was little between the side in the early stages, but the complexion of the match changed in the 14th minute when Scales sent in a cross from the left and Giakoumakis volleyed in with some assurance at the front post for his second goal in green and white.

Moments later, with the home side reeling, the striker forced his way into the Alloa penalty area but scooped his finish just wide of the target.
Celtic took control on the artificial surface and on the half-hour mark Alloa keeper David Hutton made a good reflex save from Daizen Maeda’s close-range strike.
However, Hart had to come to Celtic’s rescue in the 37th minute when, in a rare Alloa attack, Sammon got a shot away, with the ball coming off the keeper’s leg and away to safety.
There was some Celtic concern two minutes from the break when skipper McGregor had to go off with a head knock following a clash with Adam King.
With seconds of the half remaining, Celtic doubled their lead when Abada cut in from the right and from 25 yards fired an unstoppable shot past Hutton.
The cinch Premiership side kept a grip on the game after the break, even when Jota replaced the injured Abada in the 52nd minute.
Hutton did well to push Maeda’s diving header from Jota’s cross past the post for a corner which came to nothing.
Ideguchi was crunched in a tackle by Mouhamed Niang which earned the Alloa player a booking from referee Don Robertson and the Hoops midfielder had to go off with Nir Bitton coming on as Postecoglou surveyed another casualty.

The Parkhead men were far from relentless but nevertheless Hutton saved a weak header from Giakoumakis before Maeda missed the target with only the Alloa keeper to beat.
However, the game took an unlikely turn when Sammon headed in a cross from Jon Robertson and the home side got a second wind.
Celtic were forced to up the tempo again and twice brilliant blocks from Alloa defender Andy Graham stopped Giakoumakis’ shots getting through on goal and the home side never really came close to taking the tie into extra time.

A potential season-changer
There could be profound consequences arising from Celtic captain Callum McGregor taking the full force of Adam King’s forehead, at speed, on the side of his face. Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou, who cut a dejected figure over the loss of his on-field general, seemed to find it objectionable to offer a prognosis on the accidental collison in an aerial challenge beyond stating the injury was “significant”. Even when it can be presumed the team’s medical team had communicated to him an early assessment.

On BBC’s Sportscene highlights programme, former Celtic midfielder Peter Grant was more forthcoming. He noted the manner in which McGregor held the side of his face as he left the field patently in excruciating pain, and recalled experiencing similar in his player career when he suffered a broken bone in this area. It was a fracture that required “six to eight weeks” rehabilitiation time. Postecoglou finds the obsession with player availability for the title-tussle at home to Rangers on February 2 wearying. Fair enough, and were McGregor lost for a month, the man who sets the tone for his team both with presence and footballing poise would miss a whole host of challenging fixtures beyond the visit of the Ibrox men to the east end of Glasgow a week on Wednesday – these including the Conference League play-off against Bodo/Glimt in a month.
However, in the short-term, beginning away to Hearts on Wednesday, with Tom Rogic’s Australia call-up and David Turnbull’s hamstring sidelining, Celtic will be deprived of the trio that were their first-choice engine room for the opening half of the season. Suddenly, Postecoglou could require to lean heavily on new playmakers in Reo Hatate and still-to-debut Matt O’Riley and the redoubtable Nir Bitton as a combination in the middle of the park. The squad strains placed on Postecoglou and his club by cruel and consistent injury misfortune could yet have as telling a say in this title campaign as any opponent.
Failure of referee Don Robertson and Alloa to remain fully in control
When a lower league part-time team faces up to a more illustrious foe in a cup tie the ‘make sure they know they’ve been in a game’ mantra can looms large. No-one is suggesting Barry Ferguson sent out his team to confront Celtic with wild abandon, but with Callum McGregor, Liel Abada and Yosuke Ideguchi forced off by injury, the home team pushed the physicality of the contest to the limits. There was a throwback element to the tie – reinforced by the antiquated nature of the Indodrill Stadium – that made for some red-meat tackling that tends to be quickly clamped down on by officials in the modern age.
Robertson did not do this and failed in his responsibilities when M’Baye Niang studded the ankle of Ideguchi flying into a challenge that resulted in the Japanese debutant limping off. Ridiculously, on Sportscene Richard Foster claimed Ideguchi was hurt because he sought to pull out of a 50-50 rather than go in full pelt. The more thoughtful Grant rightly called the tackle as a straight red card in the 21st century. And it clearly breached the threshold for such an offence – the Senegal international crashing on through after slamming in for the ball in a manner that left him both out of control and endangering his opponent.
Liel Adada posting serious numbers
As Celtic’s one available striker for the next week-and-a-half, the fitness-bedevilled Giorgos Giakmoukais finding the net for a second goal in Celtic colours since his summer arrival in Scotland will have been enormously welcomed by Ange Postecoglou. So too will the continued, superb, productivity of another of his close season captures. Liel Abada’s exquisite long-range curling strike on the stroke of the interval not only provided Celtic with the two-goal cushion that meant Conor Sammon’s late counter didn’t place the tie in real jeopardy.
It supplied further evidence of the deep-seated impact of a player it should be remembered was a teenager only four months ago. The £3m signing from Maccabi Petah Tikva, can seem to drift in and out of games, but he has now plundered 11 goals and contributed a further eight assists. He has scored in every one of the five competitions the club have appeared in – finding the net in both the Champions League qualifiers and Europa League as well as all three domestic competitions – for a debut season in Scotland that surely is exceeding any reasonable expectations.

The Australian was left ruining the “story of our season” over injury losses after McGregor was forced off approaching the interval holding a poultice to the side of his face as a result of a clash of heads with Adam King thumping into his opponent as the pair challenged for a high ball.
In the second period, Liel Abada and Yosuke Ideguchi were also casualties of a bruising encounter, but the fears over McGregor were the most palpable – even if Celtic manager point-blank refused to speculate on timescales, or the nature of the problem.

There seems little chance he will be available in the next few weeks – ruling him out of Hearts away on Wednesday and, crucially, the top-of-the-table derby at home to Rangers on February 2. The 56-year-old became irritated, though, when asked specifically about McGregor’s chances of returning for that potentially pivotal confrontation.
“Cal’s a significant injury. It’s a facial injury, I don’t know what it is but he’s in not a great shape. It’s not going to be a short-term, it looked significant,” said a dismayed Postecoglou. “That’s been our season. There’s not been a weekend where I have everyone available, maybe it’s still to come. We just have to get on with it.
“We’ve got a game Wednesday night, you guys can talk about the fictitious future that might arise, but the game on Wednesday night is all we are focused on and he won’t play Wednesday night, which is a blow. I am not a doctor. There’s a point I can’t go beyond. It’s a significant injury.”
It took time – more than two miinutes – for referee Don Robertson to allow Celtic’s medical team to enter the pitch to treat McGregor and, though, Postecoglou rarely makes reference to the actions of officials the delay in allowing the midfielder to be attended to for what immediately appeared a worrying situation led to the Celtic manager breaking with convention.
“The refs are out there… From what I understand he wasn’t in great shape right from the start,” said Postecoglou, who suggested Abada and Ideguchi would shake off their knocks before midweek. “That’s the disappointing thing.”

Goals from Georgios Giakoumakis and Liel Abada earned Celtic a Scottish Cup last-16 place – but only after a late fright against League 1 Alloa Athletic.
Greek striker Giakoumakis’ tidy finish opened the scoring before Israeli winger Abada curled in a fine second.
Conor Sammon’s late header gave the part-timers hope as the visitors passed up a flurry of second-half chances.
But Barry Ferguson’s third-tier side were unable to force extra-time as Celtic saw the game out comfortably.
The League Cup holders will welcome Raith Rovers in the last 16 on weekend of 12/13 February.
The Premiership side’s wastefulness will be a cause for concern for boss Ange Postecoglou, who was dealt a blow as trio Callum McGregor, Yosuke Ideguchi and Abada all suffered injuries.
Captain McGregor was substituted following a first-half head knock, while Ideguchi and Abada were on the end of strong tackles.
“Abada and Yosuke [Ideguchi] should be okay,” Postecoglou said. “Cal [McGregor] is the one we’re most concerned about. It’s a facial injury; he’s not a great shape. It’s not going to be short-term, it looked quite significant.”

Celtic made their early dominance count when Liam Scales’ inch-perfect cross found Giakoumakis, who cushioned a fine finish into the roof of the net.
The opening goalscorer had the chance to double the lead moments later, but failed to scoop an effort on target when through on goal.
Celtic continued to probe as Daizen Maeda had a near-post effort turned behind, but Alloa did well to avoid passing up a host of chances even though Ferguson’s men were chasing shadows.
The League 1 side stuck in there, though, and very nearly got themselves back in the game when Sammon raced through and struck on the volley, only for Celtic keeper Joe Hart to make a big save.
The hosts were made to pay for that miss when Abada came off the right and guided in an excellent left-foot finish high into the far corner.
Abada maintained his level of threat before he had to be forced off, with Alloa keeper David Hutton clawing a dangerous cross from the 20-year-old off the line.
Hutton bettered that stop soon after, tipping a diving header from Maeda round his near post, while at the other end Sammon gave Hart no chance with a header of his own, glancing into the far corner.
That fuelled the part-time hosts with hope, who gave their all until the final minute when Alan Trouten’s eyes lit up on the edge of the area, but the 36-year-old fluffed his lines with the game’s last chance.
Alloa Athletic manager Barry Ferguson: “I’m delighted with the effort my players put in, I’m proud of the boys. The second goal killed us a wee bit.
“But I said at half-time to keep going and they certainly done that. We made a game of it. We nearly got there in the end, we just couldn’t get that wee bit of luck.”
Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou: “Overall, it was OK. We got the job done, that’s the most important thing.
“We could’ve created more and been more clinical. The game got a bit scrappy second half. We made things more difficult than we needed to.”
