Great result and performance for the 1st 60 mins. In 1st 10 mins the only Celtic players that seemed to touch the ball were CCV and Starfelt as they set up a high line and tried to stop us playing through the middle. It was obvious they couldnt do that for 90 mins but i was frustrated with us not slipping the easy ball between the lines when we had the opportunity early on.
After 1st 10 we destroyed them, they couldnt handle our movement and pace. Jota was going past at will and Hatate & O Riley were brilliant on the turn. There was one move were Hatate spun in CC and ran at them, he shaped up to play in GG making the cross field run to RHS and he dragged 2 Tarts players with him and Hatate just no look passed left to O Riley, it was a tad too strong or O Riley didnt anticipate it but the whole centre of defence was wide open for a run through on goal.
Game changed when we took off Jota, understandably, as he was our go to ball and he was still terrorising them. Ange’s game management needs to improve in latter stages. i appreciate that he wants his teams to go forward and create for 90 mins but all they did was lump crosses into middle, mostly from their RHS.
With 20 left. I would have hooked Forrest, who was spent and but in Scales and taken off Hatate or O Riley and put another central Defender on to make it a back 3/5. Julien and Welsh were both on the bench. Then the other Central midfielder comes off for McCarthy and you have a solid central midfiels and defence to nulify them.
Though big GG was immense, led the line very well and his goal was 1st class.
As for Hatate’s strike……..oooft. People are saying Gordon should have saved it? Nonsense, it was past him before he had a chance to get his hands into position, a goalie dives first with his body then his arms extend, there just wasnt enough time for him to do that before the ball was past him.
Can you imagine Hatate hitting a few of those next week against the old boy? We wont need a forward line then just hit the target from 30 yards and its shooty in lol.
(Liam Kelly)
Thoughts
Hatate excellent until he tired,O’Riley good debut,Jota class, Vickers solid,Giakoumakis great
Taylor &Starfelt’s passing was off whole game,Forrest was poor & Starfelt poor in lead up to Hearts goal
Overall great 60 mins,30 minutes hanging on.Result all that matters Add to that,Bitton had a bad second half.Midfield was lost in last 30 but had been excellent first 60
We could’ve had a penalty at 2-0 for handball.Hearts goal & our goal both tight and probably just off. Hearts penalty was clear handball but could argue Bitton was pushed first
Twitter:
Chris Sutton: Big win and 3 points that for Celtic. Ballsy performance ran out of legs second half. Missed Jota’s composure and threat when he went off. Giakoumakis led the line well. Credit Hearts who gave it a real go last 30 minutes. Super advert for Scottish football
Agent Scotland : What a game of football that was, it had everything, a world class goal, great football, two sides having a right go at each other at various points, atmosphere was absolutely electric, great advert for Scottish Football.
Etims: A lot of tired Celts tonight but also that got great game time into quite a few players.. rest up and they’ll be good to go after United at weekend.
Can see Ange showing Calmac green face masks to try and really bolster the squad for next Wednesday

Celtic hold on to beat Hearts in tale of two offside goals and a missed penalty
Ange Posetcoglou and his players will have been made aware of Hearts boss Robbe Neilson’s declaration of intent as he set his Gorgie side the target of chasing down second placed Celtic.

But the visitors produced a devastating first-half display that proved too good for their hosts to live with.
Almost equidistant from the Parkhead side and the teams trying to close in on third place, the Hearts bss had challenged his men to look up the way and three points in this one would have helped that cause but there is a relentlessness to the way the two big Glasgow clubs manage to quash those kind of aspirations before they gain traction.
The thing about this one was that Hearts really believed they could take the game to the visitors, the way they had when they had locked horns in the same stadium back in July and come away with the victory.
They showed that desire in the opening few minutes of this match and then in the final half an hour but in between, Celtic slayed them.
In command and, piling on the pressure, they broke through with two goals, in the 27th and 35th minute, giving themselves a lead that proved unassailable regardless how hard the capital side came at them in the second half.
In the end, it was a tale of two offside goals, a missed penalty and a frantic, fast-flowing game where momentum see-sawed.
Hearts had their chances, though, reducing the deficit in the 62nd minute and then earning a penalty just nine minutes later. But, while Liam Boyce was clinical with the former and sent Joe Hart the wrong way when he stepped up looking to dispatch the latter he was foiled by the post.
It allowed the title challengers to claim the victory and instead of Hearts narrowing the gap, Celtic extended their lead in second place to 12 points.
In the opening minute, Hearts forward Boyce laid on an opportunity for Barrie McKay to have a dig. But he couldn’t find the net.
A busy and full-on start to the contest, there was an emotional pause in the 13th minute as the fans, players and staff all joined in applause as a mark of respect for 13-year-old Hearts Devin Gordon, who passed away recently.
But it was the only real respite in a game where both teams competed.
Having started slowly, Celtic shifted up through the gears, though, with their mobility, energy and attacking prowess pinning Hearts in. The siege was always likely to reap dividends, despite Hearts defensive defiance.
Players like Jota and Reo Hatate were difficult to contain, while Matt O’Riley was another asset.
The opener came in the 27th minute and it was a stunning strike from Hatate which left Scotland’s number 1 Craig Gordon helpless.
Soon after there was a second goal and, while it was later shown to be offside, there was a delightful little flick from Giorgos Giakoumakis to beat Gordon and John Souttar at the near post.
Hearts got one back in the 62nd minute as Celtic’s superiority waned and Hearts threw everything at them. Boyce was the man on the end of McKay’s cross but the striker was less clinical in the 71st minute, as his spot-kick came back off the post.
Celtic reaction: O’Riley to join history-makers Abada, Kyogo, Carter-Vickers and Maeda, wherefore art thou VAR objectors, humbling tribute
Some common themes of the season were to the fore as Celtic beat Hearts 2-1 in a pulsating encounter at Tynecastle.

Sudden Impact
You begin to wonder if Ange Postecoglou has a pocket watch on a chain he swings rhythmically back-in-forth in front of the watchful eyes of new Celtic signings, so hypnotically do such individuals regularly set about slipping into the style of play demanded by the Australian. Matt O’Riley became the latest debutant to get with the programme right away, his darting runs, incisive passing and give-and-gos in the final third allowing the £1.5m capture from MK Dons to walk off with Sky’s man of the match accolade.
The question now is whether the 21-year-old Londoner can take his inititial form into his first Celtic Park appearance as Postecoglou’s men host Dundee United on Saturday and find the net to continue a historical run this season from such performers. For, in a quirk for the modern age, already four Postecoglou purchases have scored when they have made such a bow. It is a devilishly difficult stat to check, but Liel Abada, Kyogo Furuhashi, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Daizen Maeda claiming a goal in such circumstances appears to set this campaign apart for the club.
VAR for art thou technophobes?
Surely those previously implacably opposed to the introduction of a video assistant referee system on the grounds of it stealing the game’s soul can start to recognise how black-hearted this can make them seem? It is torture that close calls such as those involved in Celtic’s second goal and Hearts’ strike in sides’ latest Tynecastle tussle have no VAR fall-back. Both Giorgos Giakoumakis and Liam Boyce appeared offside when played-in to score, but little blame can be apportioned to referee John Beaton and far-side assistant Dougie Potter for the failure to adjudicate correctly on these incidents. The so-tight margins placed these two goals in the grey area that doesn’t allow for definitive responses from those with the flags – ensuring, in good conscience, they cannot be raised. Indeed, they are precisely the sort of moments that only VAR replays can provide real clarity on. As many have acknowledged, VAR cannot come quickly enough into Scottish football.
Genuinely affecting
Tynecastle can be no place for the faint-hearted on such evenings, when the bile flying from the supports of both teams can create an air of malevolence. This was punctured by the humanity shown in the 13th-minute applause for the 13-year-old supporter Devin Gordon, who tragically died last week. Both teams warmed up in FC United To Prevent Suicide top and the manner the game essentially was paused spontaneously for the players to offer a humbling tribute along with all four stands was genuinely affecting.
Ange Postecoglou singles out Celtic difference-maker against Hearts who is ‘showing people why I brought him to the club’
Celtic’s fortitude in seeing through a testing end at Tyencastle for their 2-1 victory over Hearts was exemplified in the industry of goalscorer Giorgos Giakoumakis believes his manager Ange Postecoglou.

And the rumbustuous Greek’s all-round contribution as he bagged a third goal in only his fourth start following an opening five months of the season ruined by fitness issues moved the Celtic manager to posit that it was a performance to show why he paid £2.5m to VVV-Venlo to recruit the 27-year-old.
“He had a tough first half of the year for sure,” said Postecoglou. “[But you talk] about character and mentality.
“He worked hard to get himself fit during the little break we had. We gave the guys a few days off but he kept going along with James [Forrest] and Chris Jullien to be ready and I thought he was great.
“He scored not just a great goal but worked awfully hard and he had to because unfortunately at the moment we don’t have somebody to give him a bit of a breather towards the end. But I think he is showing people why I brought him to the football club. He has a presence about him and in the box he can score goals.’
“[The smart finish for his goal showed] his strengths. It’s a testament to his character. I said after he missed the penalty against Livingston [in the 0-0 draw in October] that that’s the burden you carry being the number nine here at Celtic. You are expected to be here for the big moments and score goals and that’s what he wants. He didn’t shy away after that happened, worked hard to get himself fit and be ready and I thought he led the line superbly.”
Postecoglou and his team, now unbeaten in 20 domestic games, have to keep ploughing forward despite whatever injury and personnel setbacks that continue to be thrown at them. Matt O’Riley was given a debut in Gorgie as he and Reo Hatate – scoring with a thumping long-range effort in only his second start – were deployed as playmaking partners in the absence of Callum McGregor, Tom Rogic and David Turnbull. “If you chart the course of this team from the first time we were here [at Tynecastle] – which people keep mentioning – the amount of challenges we’ve had means we haven’t really had a smooth run to be honest. But I don’t mind because it builds resilience and reveals character.
“It doesn’t matter what team we throw out there, the guys show that they are ready for it and enjoying and embracing the kind of team we want to be. They are not making excuses or allowances for anything and I think that’s a credit to the whole group.”

Liam Boyce misses penalty v Celtic
Liam Boyce missed the chance to level the game from the spot in the second half
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou hailed his side’s “resilience and grit” as they survived a second-half scare at Hearts to remain four points off the Scottish Premiership summit.
The visitors led by two after Reo Hatate’s long-range drive was followed by a cute Giorgos Giakoumakis finish.
But the hosts improved after the interval as Liam Boyce pulled one back before passing up the chance to equalise when his penalty hit a post.
“I’m very proud,” Postecoglou said.
“We had some challenges in terms of personnel but credit to the players, they were fantastic. We played well, created a lot of opportunities and probably should have killed the game off a bit earlier.
“In the end, we had to defend a bit and we did that well.”
This win – and Boyce’s penalty miss in isolation – could be pinpointed as a massive turning point in the title race come May, should Postecoglou’s men manage to catch leaders Rangers, who they host next midweek.

Reaction & as it happened
When Hearts condemned Celtic to opening-day defeat in July, Neilson lauded the limited number of 5,500 home fans in attendance, saying they “sounded like 20,000”. Six months on, this was a contest worthy of the full house inside Tynecastle.
A raucous crowd watched on under the floodlights as Barrie McKay curled narrowly over for the hosts in a breathless opening.
Celtic debutant Matt O’Riley had a dangerous shot blocked up the other end, but the visitors were creating problems for themselves in defence with slack passes, fuelling a boisterous home crowd.
While the visitors were looking rusty in defence, Jota – on his first start in almost two months – was their sharpest tool as the winger danced past Michael Smith and tested Craig Gordon low at his near post twice in quick succession.
As the half progressed, Celtic began to dictate and broke the deadlock in emphatic style when Hatate’s first goal for the club, a searing drive from long range, was too powerful for Gordon.
And just eight minutes later, Postecoglou’s men had their second when the impressive O’Riley’s low cross from the right found Giakoumakis, who guided in a delightful backheel flick.
Although there were no protests from the home players, replays showed the Greek striker may have been marginally offside.
The home side failed to register a shot on target in the first half, but were much improved in the second as Cammy Devlin slashed a half-volley just wide.
Celtic were still posing a threat, though, with Josip Juranovic’s strike needing to be tipped away and Jota having an effort from a tight angle smothered by Gordon.
But the away side’s failure to take either of those chances left the door open for the hosts, who capitalised on hesitant defending to pull a goal back.
McKay picked up a bouncing ball and slipped in Boyce, who slid a finish under Joe Hart. Like Giakoumakis in the first half, the Hearts forward appeared to benefit from a marginal offside call.
The Northern Irish striker then had the chance to level the game from the spot after a double handball from Nir Bitton and O’Riley left John Beaton with no choice but to point to the spot.
Boyce sent Hart the wrong way, but saw his penalty strike the inside of the left-hand post before flashing across the face of goal and out of play.
Hearts did not allow that to dishearten them, though, and continued to rally for an equaliser, but Postecoglou’s men showed a resilient side to earn a monumental three points.
Man of the match – Matt O’Riley
Matt O’Riley
The 21-year-old debutant assisted on his first Celtic appearance – one of eight chances created – and put in a tireless shift in midfield
What did we learn?
Six months on from an opening-day defeat at Tynecastle, this trip was rightly billed as a big hurdle for the visitors to overcome.
The Parkhead club were criticised for being too soft back in late July, when they fell to defeat after a late goal from John Souttar, but this victory highlighted two sides to Postecoglou’s Celtic.
The first 45 minutes demonstrated the free-flowing, dominant nature of the team the Australian has built, while the second period proved he has instilled a bit of dig into his players, albeit they benefited from a bit of luck.
The nature of the defeat will hurt for Neilson, as will his team’s first-half display, but the Tynecastle boss can take great pride in his players’ second-half performance.
The cameo from Beni Baningime will also provide encouragement, who lifted the home side’s level on his first appearance since November.
What did they say?
Hearts manager Robbie Neilson: “We started the first 10 minutes really well. Celtic are very good, but we allowed them to be after that period.
“It was a game of two halves. Bringing [Ellis] Simms on gave us a bit of a link up top. Giving him 45 minutes, the players can see what he brings. I think he will be a top player for us.”
