Trivia
- KO: 3pm, Saturday
- In the earlier kickoff Sevco drew with Ross County who scored an equaliser in the 95th minute for a 3-3 draw. Celtic almost messed up the chance to catch up, winning only in the 95th minute
- So net, Celtic now just two points behind Sevco for the league title race.
- Sevco fans in storm for racist abuse online against a Ross County player (Regan Charles Cook).
- Debut for Celtic’s 16year old Ben Doak
- Ben Doak (Nov 2005) playing on his debut 29 January 2022, makes him the first @CelticFC player who is younger than @kerrydalestreet (Aug 2004). A sign of that now players playing now have no knowledge or experience of a football world outwith of the social media world, which is a huge difference to beforehand.
- Bitton sent off again! But fellow countryman saves the day with a late late late goal.
- Ex-Celtic Manager Wim Jansen sadly passed away this week, Celtic & fans paying tribute in his memory today.
- Brendan Rodgers at the game today. Did he slither under the door that he left under to get in?

Summary
“We never stop, we never stop. We stop at half time and we’ll stop at the end of the game when we celebrate.” Ange Postecoglou
‘We understand that winning on Wednesday will put us in first position, but it doesn’t give us the trophy. Until we have the trophy in our hands we don’t stop.’ – Ange Postegcoglou
Summary:
First half Celtic were pedestrian until the half hour then Celtic kicked it up a notch. Second half was a combinationm of comedy finishing and wild saves from the keeper. Felt a bit different to other 0-0s so far in that Celtic had plenty of chances and it just felt like a one of those days efforts with the GG save. Some of his finishing was madness – GG seems to handle the toxic away atmospheres better than home!
Then wee Abada decided to show why we signed him and why Celtic can work on his weaknesses but Celtic can absolutely rely on him to put away a finish. Absolutely class act at times that kid, even if he can frustrate.

The title race in Scotland summed up in about 4 and a half hour
@TEnglishSport · 2h Liel Abada doesn’t get the coverage that Furuhashi and Jota get (and you can add Hatate and Maeda to the list) but he’s been a brilliant signing. Twelve goals already, from out wide. Twenty years old. An amazing return and a very big goal today
@krys1888 · 2h Feared it was going to be another Tommy Burns era day of “the leaders drop points but so do we” but, not for the first time, our ten men got the goal we needed. Huge chance now next midweek to go top. Need to dig deep, our squad is still very stretched.
@McNallyMirror · 2h TEN men won a famous victory today. Abada’s late winner after Bitton’s dismissal could prove a title race turning point with the gap now down to 2 points.#Celtic have the chance to go top by winning Wednesday’s Glasgow derby. What a transformation Ange has engineered.
@AgentScotland · 1h James Forrest took pelters around me in the first half, I thought he actually did alright & if Scales didn’t need to take so many touches he could’ve released him a lot earlier to attack the RB, I thought he might’ve got another 15/20 minutes with Taylor or Jaranovic behind him.
I thought Carl Starfelt was outstanding today, particularly in the first half, he won every ball he had to win, all you can ask, United didn’t exactly throw the kitchen sink at the Celtic defence but anything he had to deal with it done it well.
Tam Courts Dundee Utd Manager:
“Celtic had a lot of control, crosses and attempts at goal. But we were comfortable in our shape. So I’m bitterly disappointed that we’ve lost it so late. My frustration is that we didn’t sustain enough attacks and cause Celtic problems. We caused them more problems at Parkhead earlier in the season. But in terms of endeavour and what we put in, we merited a point.
“The goalkeeper has to perform really well when you come to Celtic Park. Benji is a top shot stopper and the save he made with his foot was probably the pick of the bunch. One lapse in defence cost us. There were so many crosses coming into our box. Celtic threw everything at us, making big substitutions at half-time to try and win the game. I’m disappointed for our fans and the players.”

Liel Abada the last-gasp hero as Celtic lose another midfielder for Rangers clash
Maybe it is meant to be for Celtic this season.

https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/celtic/liel-abada-the-last-gasp-hero-as-celtic-lose-another-midfielder-for-rangers-clash-3547275
The euphoria, the utterly volcanic eruption across the club’s stadium – and which had manager Ange Postecoglou buried by a mountain of coaching staff – greeting Liel Abada’s 90th minute winner over Dundee United betrayed that those of a Celtic disposition certainly believe as much.
How could they not, when the Parkhead team came so perilously close to blowing a gilt-edged opportunity to move within two points of Rangers ahead of Scottish football’s behemoths squaring up on Wednesday. Oh, those barely perceptible margins. Were football encounters 89 minutes dead, Rangers would not have been pegged back to 3-3 at Dingwall and Celtic would have been held to a scoreless draw desperately damaging in – if following through that scenario – allowing the Ibrox men to extend their cinch Premiership lead to six points.
Instead, Postecoglou’s men are right on their rivals’ tails, and will go top if, for the first time in more than two years, Celtic can emerge victorious from the fixture.
Yet there are absolutely no certainties about what can be expected in that confrontation when considering what their United scrape reaffirmed. For all their flourish and attacking intent, Celtic within their own environs can be peculiarly lacking in penalty area conviction. They have rarely posted any straightforward league wins on their home patch these past four months. And in their 21 game unbeaten run, their most sumptuous displays have almost all come when teams have been more willing to make a game of it in their own surrounds.
Moreover, the success over a Tannadice opponent impressively obdurate – and from whom keeper Benjamin Siegrist produced two outrageous saves – had to be sealed with 10 men.
Two bookable offences from Nir Bitton, both unquestionable, led to the Celtic captain being shown his sixth red card for the club in the 83rd minute…just as the Israeli has been earning universal plaudits for his commanding showings. With Callum McGregor, David Turnbull and Tom Rogic all unavailable for the derby, Celtic will now have four midfielders missing for Rangers’ visit, in addition to the absences of forwards Kyogo Furuhashi and Daizen Maeda.
A clumsy showing in front of goal from Giorgos Giakoumakis following his recent exploits may be a cause of concern. Mind you, the United keeper appeared to defy gravity to get his toe to a point blank effort from the Greek when diving the opposite way little past the hour mark.
However, that could be offset by Abada once again demonstrating what an invaluable contributor he is to the Celtic cause. The 20-year-old looked the player most-likely-to across the entire afternoon, even as a series of chances were squandered.
He eventually earned his deserved reward with a 12th goal of the season that could prove monumentally-important. Jota flipped over a delicious right-wing cross that found the United backline wanting in allowing Abada to bring the ball under control in acres of space.
He followed that up by crashing it high into the net to prompt raucous reverberations so foundation-shaking they almost had the Celtic Park roof crashing down. Instead, Postecoglou’s men now have a midweek opportunity to raise it.
Ange Postecolgou reacts to ’emotional’ Celtic fans as frustration turns to relief with late win over Dundee United
Celtic’s Ange Postecoglou believes the manic outpouring that following Liel Abada’s last-gasp winner over Dundee United was fully justified – but that his team cannot play on those emotions.

And for the Australian that extends to getting carried away at the prospect of going top of the cinch Premiership against Rangers on Wednesday – that scenario now possible as a result of the Ibrox side drawing away to Ross County to allow Celtic’s late show at the close of a frustating afternoon to put them within two points of their title rivals.
“The fans are entitled to be emotional,” he said of the club’s second win of the season when reduced to 10 men, captain Nir Bitton red-carded for a second bookable offence in the 82nd minute. “They knew if we won today, we closed the gap at the top of the league. It would have been easy for them to get frustrated but I felt the energy from them was good.

“We are just going to be a team that tries to win games of football, irrespective of the circumstances – whether we are down to 10 men, whether we are home or away, whether playing in Europe or in a cup, our intent is to go and win games of football. It was probably just a continuation of the spirit and the willingness of the players to find a way. It wasn’t a great day for us, especially first half when we didn’t have the intensity and tempo in our football to put them consistently under pressure.
“Having said that we created enough chances but when the ball is not going in and the keeper is pulling off some outstanding saves you just hope the players maintain their composure.
“We then got the red card….But the consistent theme over the last three or four months is that the players find a way and they did that again today.
“[The chance to go top on Wednesday night] won’t mean anything significant because that’s not the end game. You don’t get a trophy for being first in February. Our goal and mission is to be there at the end. It’s not that it’s an insignificant moment, it’s just that we have to keep going.
“It’s not like when you are in first place that we will get an advantage over teams and it will be easy for us. It’s going to be a battle every day. If we somehow think getting to first place is an achievement or we get comfortable or get some sort of an advantage…
“We have just have to be relentless, playing our style of football as well as we can and keep getting better and individuals keep getting better. The new players are beginning to understand that the expectations are there all the time, they don’t ease, playing a couple of good games doesn’t give you any latitude against any opposition not to perform again. The players have embraced that, so Wednesday night our intent is to come here and play better than we did today, win the game, but then dust ourselves off and go again.”

Celtic’s Liel Abada scores
Liel Abada scored Celtic’s winning goal
Celtic narrowed the gap on Premiership leaders Rangers to two points through Liel Abada’s late goal against Dundee United despite being reduced to 10 men.
Rangers’ earlier draw away to Ross County handed Ange Postecoglou’s side the opportunity to pile on pressure before Wednesday’s Old Firm derby.
Goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist denied the home side with a series of saves before Nir Bitton’s 81st-minute red card.
But Abada fired home from close range as the game entered added time.
Until then, it looked as if United were about to do enough to leave Celtic Park with their second draw of the season.
Instead, Postecoglou’s side remain unbeaten in 13 games, winning 12 of them, and United are left without a win at Celtic Park in 46 meetings since December 1992.
Reaction & as it happened
Considering they were looking to pay a winning tribute to title-winning former manager Wim Jansen, who died this week, and had just heard Rangers had dropped a couple of points in Dingwall, Celtic’s first-half performance was strangely subdued.
Adrian Sporle’s start at left wing-back was one of five changes made by United head coach Thomas Courts and the Argentine flashed an early warning shot across the face of the Celtic goal.
However, Celtic were as dominant in possession as expected but found the United rearguard – including a place for 18-year-old Lewis Neilson because of injuries – stubborn and brave in their denial of a breakthrough.
When the home side did manage a sight of goal, Siegrist was in typically obstinate form and saves from Abada and Matt O’Riley came before the latter squandered a great chance when the unmarked recent signing from MK Dons fired wide from 12 yards.
Postecoglou was probably hoping to give Jota and Josip Juranovic a rest before the midweek derby, but the duo were thrown on at half-time.
Jota made an immediate impression, the on-loan Benfica winger setting up O’Riley for a head flick that forced another Siegrist save before laying it on a plate for Giorgos Giakoumakis, only for the goalkeeper to somehow divert the striker’s shot over the bar from point-blank range.
When Bitton was shown a second yellow card after hauling down United substitute Declan Glass, it looked as if Celtic’s frustrating afternoon was complete – and there was still time for it to become worse still.
Jota, though, threw in another dangerous cross and, when United failed to clear, Abada made no mistake from close range for his 12th goal of the season to send Celtic Park into a mix of relief and rapturous applause.
Man of the match – Benjamin Siegrist
What did we learn?
That late winner increases the stakes before Wednesday’s Old Firm derby, with Celtic now having the chance to go top should they defeat faltering reigning champions Rangers on their own patch.
The depth of Celtic’s squad continues to impress – even when throwing on 16-year-old midfielder Ben Doak for his debut as a substitute – although fit-again Jota proved again that his presence is key to their title challenge.
What a difference late goals for County and Abada have made to Wednesday’s showdown at Celtic Park.
United failed to match their draw earlier in the season at Celtic Park and will be disappointed with conceding the late goal but should leave Glasgow with plenty of positives having held on so long despite missing some key players of their own.
What they said
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “It was a frenetic finish. I’m delighted with the end result. Credit to the players, again they found something within them.
“We weren’t at our best, especially in the first half. As long as the game goes, you think we have to find something special. For the last three and a half months, they’ve risen to every challenge.”
Dundee United head coach Thomas Courts: “It’s very cruel as the players gave absolutely everything.
“I thought the boys executed the gameplan excellently well. Just bitterly disappointed that we’ve lost that late goal, which is testament to Celtic for pushing right to the end, but we do leave frustrated.”
