- Celtic remain top by 1pt, Sevco defeated Hearts in other game.
- Rogic returns and scores a double.
- Motherwell have a half full stadium as limit Celtic fans allocations and it’s a waste and a poor advert for the game when so many would have wanted to come & watch the game! Motherwell Chief Exec did fairly address this point, but still unconvinced. See end of page.
- Raith Rovers: Chairman admits that they got it wrong to sign on David Goodwillie whose presence has caused uproar both within and outwith Raith Rovers circles, and he won’t now play for their club. Lost them many long-term dedicated staff & fans. With all due respect, as it relates to sensitive issues, we will leave further discussion to another more appropriate forum than this site.
- Ange Postecoglou has been named the @spfl #cinchPrem 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 for January.
- Falkirk have made a move to sign Leigh Griffiths.
- Ex-Celt David Cattanach passed away on Friday past. RIP
- Former Celtic boss Neil Lennon reckons some of the club’s fans will regret their protests after the defeat to Ross County in the League Cup during the lockdown season. The pressure increased as the club went for their tenth title in a row. Lennon said: “Lockdowns had affected everyone in so many negative ways, so there was a lot of frustration out there. Rightly or wrongly, some of those fans showed in their own way at the time. “I’d like to think most of them now regret that.” – To be clear, from the general online opinion, he’s wrong.
- Postecoglou has claimed Reo Hatate is nowhere near the adequate fitness levels despite the Japanese ace starring in the 3-0 win over Sevco. The midfielder seemed to be everywhere as he scored twice and set up the third. Postecoglou said: “We know he’s got quality and he’ll get better. You can see he’s nowhere near the levels of fitness required but we’ll build him up slowly.”
- Winter Olympics is up & running. Good luck to the Curling team, with mixed team already scoring some big wins.
- SkySports Presenter & Hun apologist & explayer Kris Boyd complained that theRangers players had failed to test Callum McGregor’s protective face mask which he wore in midweek to allow him to play in the match that Celtic won 3-0. It clearly seems to indicate that he complained they should have targetted his injury which is irresponsible & dangerous. Celtic make a statement they are investigating. Summary
Interviewer: How does it feel to be on top?
Tom Rogic: We’ve been on top for a decade, mate.
Phenomenal football by Celtic. They are a joy to behold at the moment. The speed of play is mesmerising in its accuracy.
Alex Neill “This is the best Celtic team I’ve seen in a long time. I think Celtic look unstoppable right now”.
adamnmince of KDS:
After they got a wee head of steam up we just scored and burst their enthusiasm entirely. Dominated much of that game, fast started followed by totally absorbing their wee pushback. Effing fantastic Celtic, absolutely fantastic. As enjoyable a run of performances as I can recall; even the Utd game we were solid for at least an hour and a goal was the least we deserved. We are seeing games out, smashing teams with ease, and generally just looking tremendous every time we get on the ball. So excited to watch Celtic atm, we’re just outstanding fun.
Great combinations, awesome pressing, and total confidence in every member of the team to contribute – we look a proper team atm. So happy not only for Ange who has done a stellar job, but for guys who were here last year and had their reputations smashed; guys like Cal, Rogic, Taylor, Forrest etc. – even coaches like Kennedy, Strachan. and Woods. Feels like this squad is a fine mix of hungry young guys looking to make a huge mark in their careers and veterans keen to show last season wasn’t down to them entirely. A fine mix – add in the soundest man in the world as coach and you’ve got a hugely likeable Celtic team.
Twitter:
HP: A special mention for John Beaton today. I hope that hurt , one of the poorest “officials ” in our game . Some of the fouls he awarded and bookings and non bookings that occurred during the game was beyond belief.
AgentScotland: Brilliant performance from Celtic, they started the game so well and it just continued throughout, four nil, could’ve easy been seven or eight and that’s being modest, they have goals all over the park, their movement is hypnotising at times & every players knows what Ange wants.
McGinlay: Liel Abada is the player Rangers fans think Ryan Kent is.

How Celtic’s biggest away win of season at Motherwell showed significance of Rangers victory
It may be one of Scottish football’s enduring tropes that a win in the derby dust-up between Celtic and Rangers is only worth three points.

https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/celtic/how-celtics-biggest-away-win-of-season-at-motherwell-showed-significance-of-rangers-victory-3557074
However, the devastation that Ange Postecoglou’s men inflicted in another blistering first half as Motherwell went the way of Rangers in midweek told entirely otherwise. It served to indicate that downplaying the fixture’s significance is rot.
With a three-goal first 45 minutes at Fir Park, to follow on from such a triple salvo against Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men, Celtic showed the burgeoning of their belief and command that swatting aside their title rivals could bake in. It is no coincidence that the eventual 4-0 victory made for their biggest away win in the cinch Premiership this season…a matter of days on from their Rangers tousing supplied them their most comprehensive home league win since August. Or that integral to the Lanarkshire lashing were Liel Abada and Reo Hatate – two men who were to the fore in midweek.

Of course, there were also notable differences between these pastings dished out by Postecoglou’s men. Chief among them the presence of the peerless Tom Rogic, who wasn’t available through international commitments that have deprived his club of his wiles for the past fortnight.

The Australian, in for Matt O’Riley, showed his effortless class with a scoring double that took Celtic into the interval in clover. Unlike Rangers, after surviving an early blitz Graham Alexander’s team actually put their visitors under a bit of pressure. Only for Celtic to decide it was time to put them to the sword with two superb strikes in the 28th and 31st minute.
The frst was all about Hatate’s composure and vision which allowed him to sweep over a cross from the left that Abada pounced on to drill across the body of Liam Kelly, who by then had already denied Giorgos Giakoumakis on a couple of occasions.
Then the irrepressible Rogic took over. A man who makes the glorious look effortless, his first counter was a 20-yard curler into the top corner that he made appear as natural as breathing to him. In the final seconds of the first half, it was a similar story. Corking set-up work from Abada, who ate up the ground to catch a raking 40-yard pass from Anthony Ralston on the byline, resulted in a cutback that Rogic met first-time to send flying into the top corner.
The depth of squad now assembled by Postecoglou allowed him to withdraw Hatate and Abada at the break, and Callum McGregor and Giakoumakis after an hour, and still have his team put the thumbscrews on the home team. They were fortunate that the only further damage inflicted was a curious 71st minute goal from Daizen Maeda. Sent through on goal and challenged by Bevis Mugabi as he shaped to shoot from the edge of the box, the upshot brought a perfect result for the Japanese striker as the ball looped high in the air and over Kelly before bouncing over the line.
Motherwell: Kelly, Mugabi, Solholm Johansen (Grimshaw 82), McGinley, O’Donnell, Donnelly, Cornelius, Carroll (Tierney 45), Slattery (Nirennold 81), van Veen (Woolery 45), Goss (Efford 45). Not used: Fox, Ojala, Amaluzor, Roberts.
Celtic: Hart, Ralston, Carter-Vickers, Starfelt, Taylor (Juranovic 80), Rogic, McGregor (O’Riley 63), Hatate (Bitton 45), Abada (Forrest 45), Giakoumakis (Jota 63), Maeda. Not used: McCarthy, Johnston, Bain, Welsh.

Liel Abada goal v Motherwell
Celtic winger Liel Abada capitalised on slack Motherwell defending to give the visitors the lead
Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou challenged his side to remain “relentless” in their pursuit of the Scottish Premiership title after a rampant attacking display at Motherwell.
Three goals in 17 first-half minutes – one from Liel Abada and two from Tom Rogic – were followed by a fortuitous fourth from Daizen Maeda as the visitors consolidated top spot.
The win means Celtic are 19 league games unbeaten and four points clear, albeit Rangers can cut that gap when they host Hearts at 16:00 GMT.
“We like to play a certain way,” Postecoglou said. “We don’t want to be a team that grinds out results, we want to get the fans off their seats.
“We didn’t come here to shut up shop after three goals. We want to get four, five, six. We will be doing that until the end of the season until we rest or we drop to the ground.”
Reaction & as it happened
Not since December 2015 had the Lanarkshire side taken three points against Celtic in the league, and with Postecoglou’s exhilarating team coming off the back of a huge derby victory on Wednesday, the hosts’ wait was expected to continue.
But Motherwell withstood early pressure, with Abada’s first-time finish stopped by the foot of Liam Kelly before the Israeli winger’s dangerous low ball across was cut out by the Motherwell goalkeeper.
The hosts, with no recognised winger in their line up for the second game running, were happy to flood the centre of the park and press Celtic high.
That method seemed to nullify the visitors and as a result the Fir Park side showed signs of building momentum, although Kelly had to be alert with his right boot again to deny Giorgos Giakoumakis’ low drive across goal.
But for all the hosts’ impressive work inside the opening 28 minutes, they found themselves two down in the following three.
First, dreadful defending from the Motherwell defence allowed Reo Hatate to bend a low ball into the path of the arriving Abada to bury, similar to his midweek goal against Rangers.
Rogic, on his return after international duty, added a quickfire second with a divine 20-yard effort into the top-left corner.
And 14 minutes later, on the stroke of half-time, the Australia international had his second and Celtic’s third. Abada was the provider again, sliding a ball across for Rogic to finish first time past Kelly at close range.
Alexander made three half-time changes, one being debutant Joe Efford, who made an instant impact, forcing Joe Hart up to his right to parry a deflected effort before the American flashed another strike wide of the near post.
Up the other end, Celtic captain Callum McGregor failed to add to his side’s tally when he drilled a strike of his own over on the break.
But the away side got their fourth in fortuitous fashion when Maeda’s strike from just inside the box looped high in air via a deflection off Bevis Mugabi and dropped into the net.
The Japan forward had a golden chance to make it five moments later after substitute Jota found the striker free in the middle, but the 24-year-old cushioned his finish over.
The ruthless attacking mentality Postecoglou has instilled in his Celtic side was evident until the final whistle as Rogic looked for a hat-trick, first steering a near-post strike off the outside of the right-hand post then finishing low into the arms of Kelly shortly after.
Four it would finish for Celtic, though, making it seven goals in their last two games without reply as they remain in top spot.
Man of the match – Tom Rogic
Tom Rogic goal v Motherwell
The 29-year-old, arguably Celtic’s player of the season so far, could have quite easily had a hat-trick of assists and goals in a mesmerising performance
What did we learn?
Overall, Celtic’s domestic form has been outstanding since defeat at Livingston in September. But it is now nine away league wins in their last 10, a relentless run of form on the road that has been key in their title bid.
In Rogic, Postecoglou is showing that not only is he getting his money’s worth out of his new arrivals, but he is also improving the players he inherited.
The attacking midfielder looked to be on his way out of Celtic last season, but his manager and fellow countryman has reignited the spark inside the Australia international.
As for Motherwell, Efford’s introduction highlighted instantly why Alexander got his team selection wrong.
Cheap defending cost the hosts the opener, but they were winning the ball back in promising positions. With a direct, pacey attacking threat at the top end of the pitch to stretch the visiting backline, they could have got more joy.
With a trip to Dundee United to come in midweek, a game that could see the Fir Park club drop out the top four, it is now on Alexander to find an attacking formula that is going to bring his side goals.
What did they say?
Motherwell manager Graham Alexander: “Teams can play as well as you let them, but I don’t think we did that. We were in our best spell when they scored the first goal and we certainly could’ve done better on that.
“It was a difficult afternoon for us. My players never gave up, they kept going right to the end. We now have a massive game on Wednesday.”
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “Tom Rogic was great, he has been great all year. He’s scoring and creating goals and working hard.”

Alan Burrows has addressed claims that some Celtic fans were “locked out” of Fir Park on Sunday.
The Motherwell chief was questioned on social media after the stadium was not full yet Hoops supporters were not permitted inside for the action.
The away section was jam-packed but some away fans were disappointed at being refused entry despite sections of the home stands being empty and seemingly available.
