Trivia
- KO: 15:00; Sunday; League Match 27 of 38
- Back to the league after the humiliation in Europe at Celtic Park.
- Celtic go three clear and +9 up on goal difference after Sevco drew with Dundee Utd. Long way to go. 11 games to go. Celtic on 66pts with +43 goal difference.
- Giakoumakis scored a hat trick! His first and comes of age and finally gets full praise he deserves. Jota and Ralston also excellent.
- Wee Dembele back in the squad since injury last summer. Doesnt get a chance to come on.
- Incredibly poor refereeing, with an elbow in the face to a Celtic player not penalised!
- Ex Celt Mark McGhee has been appointed manager of Dundee. This is his first match in charge. Note: Gordon Strachan recommended McGhee as his successor when he stepped down, and all thankful that McGhee wasn’t given the job looking at his record since those days.
- Big Storms and heavy rainfall have been battering the UK and Ireland this weekend. Weather at this game today was poor too, very windy conditions and wet which affected the play & especially the ball when in the air.
- Afghan refugees from across Scotland were welcomed to the match by Celtic FC Foundation. They enjoyed a great experience with late drama on the pitch. “It was wild weather but the new #Afghan refugees from around #Scotland had a ball at Parkhead today watching @CelticFC VS @DundeeFC. Football is universal! Thanks so much to the club and Celtic FC Foundation for your generosity to our community. #NewScots #inclusion pic.twitter.com/N6sgMMUraU” — GlasgowAfghanUnited (@GlasgowAU) February 20, 2022
- St. Mary’s Church: Canon Tom White thanks everyone who donated towards the £28,878 funds raised for the repair & maintenance of the birthplace of Celtic. Excellent work.
- Ex Celt Jim Goodwin becomes the new Aberdeen manager. Moves from St Mirren. Reports that ex-Celt Scott Brown to take over at St Mirren (moving from Aberdeen).
- Winter Olympics: Curling – Scotland (TeamGB) have both a mens and women sides in the finals. Men win silver, women win gold. Brilliant and congrats to Eve Muirhead and her team defeating Japan, but also to the Men’s side who lost in an extra-end play-off for the gold v Sweden. Only medals for the UK side in the entire tournament.
- Politics: Ukraine: Russia plans biggest war in Europe since 1945 – acc to the UK’s much maligned PM Boris Johnson.
Summary
Giokomakis: Celtic “will win the title” and are better than their rivals “in every single part of the team”, said hat-trick hero Giorgos Giakoumakis after the dramatic late win over Dundee. [Hubris could come back to haunt Celtic, so best leave those comments to private conversation]
Ange:
“Good result and good performance. We played some good football and probably should have won more comfortably.”
Journo Tom English:
We’re now seeing what made Giakoumakis such a success last season in the Eredivisie. Three classic centre-forward goals from a combined distance of…not very much. He’s found his feet. Big winner, that. Sickener for Dundee. And Rangers.
Chris Sutton:
Ugly win but 3 important points. Big hat trick from Big George
(joebloggscity of thecelticwiki):
Forget the scoreline, Celtic were mostly poor and fought from being behind twice to win the game close to the end of the match. Giakoumakis scored a hat trick with his left foot, right foot and head! Wonderful stuff and gets the praise he deserved.
However Celtic again are weak at set pieces both goals lost from positions easy enough to defend. Pathetic. The referee was a shambles too with a dead cert red for an elbow on Giakoumakis ignored!
Anthony Ralston and Jota were excellent today. Their crossing was unreal and with someone getting into the 6 yard box we could have scored about 7 in the second half.
Missed chances & defending set pieces almost cost us. Celtic have to do better, we may now be in a position of strength but still close & easily reversible and today was an uncomfortable position against the side bottom of the table. There’s still much to improve in this Celtic side who still struggle to impose themselves in matches and take it by the scruff of the neck. It could come back to haunt us.
Etims on twitter:
Freezing, as in frozen to the bone, due to a typically crap Scottish winters day that cuts you in two! I mentioned the weather, which had an impact on play, but ultimately we won without being anywhere near our best and go 3 points clear
We dug out a win…a vital win…and ultimately that’s the bottom line but we can’t ignore our defensive deficiencies at set plays. It’s shambolic and bordering on amateurism. We are making our job so much harder by not doing the basics…good organisation and winning headers.
We were quite predictable again against a well organised team. Side to side down the line…side to side…down the other line. We struggle at times to take advantage of areas more central. Aye, busy area but quicker use of the ball rather than taking extra touches would help.
On a positive front, we showed character (again) and dug out another vital win (again) to take full advantage of the result that went our way earlier in the day. To go from 6 pts behind to 3 ahead in a month is remarkable with Ange & team deserving full praise
Another BIG positive, big Jackie Nackie Nick Nocks. Slow start with us & missing chances but Fans back players who give their all & with #Giakoumakis there’s loads of goodwill due to the graft he puts in. Today was his day. Outstanding hat-trick & what a brave winner
(AgentScotland of twitter):
Huge win for Celtic, don’t think many will get pass marks other than Giakoumakis who was absolutely clinical but they have done enough to stretch their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership, that’s a nine point swing at the top in the seven games since the winter break.
In the last 10 league games Celtic went into last 5 minutes needing a winner in 4 games, they didn’t play well but each time they’ve somehow managed to win 3 of those games, that isn’t down to luck, when their ability lets them down their character manages to pull them through.
(madplc of twitter):
It’s also not sustainable. Sevco were riding their luck for months before post winter break collapse. We are too. If the performances don’t improve then we will drop points. Desperately need Kyogo back. And defence is still shambolic at set pieces. Sunday much bigger than Thursday

Celtic 3-2 Dundee: Doing it the hard way, but Giorgos Giakoumakis eases pain of European defeat
Nothing is coming particularly easy to Celtic right now. Yet, domestically at least, they are getting there… by hook or by crook. Or, in the case of their seesaw 3-2 victory over Dundee that stretches their lead at the top of the cinch Premiership to three points, by the feet and head of hat-trick bagging Giorgos Giakoumakis.

The big Greek will never appear the most graceful of centre forwards. He will miss chances. But as he proved in extricating Celtic from the bother an impressively purposeful Dens Park side had them in, these factors are no impediments to the 27-year-old providing matchwinning moments.
A first triple to take his Celtic tally to seven goals, Ange Postecoglou’s men required every one of these to shake off the disappointment of Thursday’s 3-1 defeat by Bodo Glimt in Conference League. An 18th league win in a 21-game unbeaten run in the title race may have proved a slog that won’t greatly inspire confidence that the European tie can be turned around in Norway this week, but the application of the visitors must be factored in.

Dundee’s endeavours could only have warmed new manager Mark McGhee as he watched on from the stand. Especially, when they capitalised on Celtic set-piece frailties, initially to take the lead, and then to force their way back on terms just after the hour mark.

With the zip and incisiveness redolent in Celtic’s play only a matter of weeks ago appearing to have now given way laboured, fatigued football, it appeared that Mark Sweeney’s glancing header from a Niall McGinn free-kick to make it 2-2 would claim a precious point for the league’s basement club and leave Celtic ruing a huge opportunity missed following Rangers draw earlier in the afternoon away to Dundee United.
Giakoumakis ability to come alive in the box, to sniff out chances, spared Celtic that fate with only four minutes of normal time remaining. A driven in cross from the right by Anthony Ralston was the genesis, allowing the forward to connect with a close-range header that seemed to go straight through keeper Ian Lawlor.
It wasn’t Lawlor’s only dubious moment of the encounter brought to life when Danny Mullen broke the deadlock in the 26th minute. A goal that ensued from a rooted Joe Hart and his statuesque defence gifting the striker at tap-in at the back post from a Paul McMullan corner.
After a brilliant hitch-kick strike from Giakoumakis had cancelled that goal out within eight minutes, within another four he punished Lawlor for pushing a Daizen Maeda cross straight into his path with a sharp finish. Felled in the box by an elbow from Vontae Daley-Campbell just before the interval, he potentially should have had a penalty then to bring up his hat-trick. But he wasn’t to be denied even as a series of balls flashed across the box consistently out of his reach.

The roar that greeted his winning goal was imbued with relief but for Giakoumakis the aftermath was a scene of pure elation as ripped off his top and whipped it above his head like a lasso. Celtic survived a penalty appeal for the ball striking Jota’s outstretched arm in the final seconds, with Postecoglou’s men continuing to fall on the right side of the breaks and late drama.

Giorgos Giakoumakis fired home with four minutes left to sink Dundee
Giorgos Giakoumakis has “bags of presence”, says Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou, after the striker’s hat-trick sunk bottom club Dundee and sent his side three points clear at the Scottish Premiership summit.
Giakoumakis struck twice in quick succession after Danny Mullen’s Dundee opener before scoring late on to snatch a huge win in the title race.
Ryan Sweeney levelled after the break for the visitors in Mark McGhee’s first game in charge, but Celtic capitalised on Rangers’ draw with Dundee United.
“He’s been good,” said Postecoglou of the Greek forward.
“He’s been working awfully hard without always getting the rewards. He’s been unlucky at times. That’s why I brought him to the club.
“You saw with the opposition putting so many players in the box, we needed someone with presence and he’s got bags of it.”
Dundee remain two points adrift of St Johnstone having played a game fewer.
Tensions rose inside Celtic Park as the league leaders bludgeoned their stubborn and well-organised visitors, until Giakoumakis landed a massive 86th-minute blow.
Reaction and as it happened
The striker has been maligned a little since arriving at Celtic, not helped by the continued absence of electric Kyogo Furuhashi. He has spurned big opportunities, fluffed a penalty and been frustrated in front of goal, scoring four in 17 games prior to Dundee’s visit, but his industry cannot be questioned.
The powerful 27-year-old is a workhorse and a relentless nuisance. He gets himself in tantalising positions over and over. His desire to get on the end of things never wanes no matter how wayward his finishing can be.
For a long time, it looked like it might be another troublesome day for Giakoumakis, who sclaffed an early shot wide from a smart Callum McGregor cutback. Celtic, in general, were laboured.
McGhee had bristled with indignation in his pre-match interview when it was put to him that some Dundee fans are underwhelmed by his appointment. He watched from the stand, serving the first of an outstanding six-game touchline ban.
In the early throes, his team did not so much park the bus as bring a fleet of double-deckers to Glasgow. And it worked.
Celtic have struggled against sides who sit in and hoover up space while dynamiting those who try to play more freely. McGhee’s five-man rearguard stymied them.
The visitors had 14% possession and no shots when they struck out of nowhere. Celtic were bamboozled by a swirling Paul McMullan corner and as everyone in green and white froze, Mullen side-footed past Joe Hart on the bounce from six yards out.
It was a stunning moment for the sparse band of travelling fans. Underwhelmed? More like over the moon.
But 64 minutes is a long time to resist a side that had rattled in 57 goals across 27 league matches. Dundee’s lead evaporated after only eight.
Carl Starfelt’s header ricocheted to Giakoumakis, who finished ruthlessly on the swivel from near the penalty spot. It was clinical stuff from the abrasive forward.
Four minutes later, he was at it again. Daizen Maeda burned up the left flank, and his vicious cross was parried to the feet of the striker by Ian Lawlor. Giakoumakis could scarcely miss.
There could have been a hat-trick soon after, when Giakoumakis was bodied to the ground by Vontae Daley-Campbell as a cross soared into the home box and the Celtic fans howled for a penalty. They kept howling as Maeda headed straight at Lawlor.
Celtic exploded into the second half, eager to blow Dundee away. Maeda missed another brilliant delivery and McGregor blasted over from a tantalising position inside the box. Jota blasted acrobatically home but was correctly flagged offside.
Dundee had scarcely touched the ball. As an attacking force, they were flatlining. And then, with help from Starfelt, the defibrillator was applied spectacularly.
The Swedish defender committed a silly foul, wiping out Niall McGinn. The former Celtic winger swung in a terrific ball from the right, and the towering Sweeney bulleted home his header.
Sweeney’s goal imbued Dundee with new belief, and Mullen gave Celtic palpitations when he scooped a Max Anderson cutback over the bar at the near post.
Postecoglou sent for Tom Rogic and Liel Abada, two of his greatest creative talents. McGhee turned to Liam Fontaine, his most seasoned defender.
Abada would miscue a Jota cross wide. Anthony Ralston latched on to a deep delivery but his volley was diverted clear. Jota skipped past half of Dundee before shooting tamely from the edge of the area.
It looked like a colossal, infuriating missed opportunity for Celtic, and a tactical triumph for McGhee, until four minutes from the end.
Celtic Park was a boiling cauldron of frustration and angst when Giakoumakis answered the SOS call, slamming past Lawlor from inside the box with Celtic’s 19th shot of the day.
Even then, there was time for more home distress as Dundee claimed furiously for handball with the final act.
But it would be a day for Giakoumakis to savour. After scoring the winner, he ripped his shirt off and twirled it vigorously around his head. Celtic Park went berserk. There is a long way to go yet, but the striker, and his fans, knew what a monumental goal it was.
Man of the match – Giorgos Giakoumakis

Three predatory striker’s finishes from Giakoumakis earn three precious points
What did we learn?
Celtic’s propensity for late heroics is nothing new, but it remains deeply compelling.
They had done it already to Dundee United, Ross County and Aberdeen, and their mental toughness to stick with Postecoglou’s process when it would be easy to deviate from it has borne fruit.
Oddly, Dundee had taken the decision to sack James McPake after back-to-back wins, one at third-place Hearts, and another at Peterhead to progress to the Scottish Cup quarter-finals.
McGhee has been widely pilloried since announcing his return to Scotland, but he had his team on the brink of a cleverly constructed draw.
With Dundee and St Johnstone picking up form, and Ross County’s dipping a little, the coming weeks at the bottom of the table will be just as fascinating as the duel at the top.
What they said
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “You can’t get frustrated. You’ve got to stick to the process, that’s where the answers lie. They don’t lie in changing anything or losing our heads.
“After totally dominating the game it’s very easy for anxiety to build up, the crowd get a bit nervous, and we just had to stay calm and play our football.”
Dundee manager Mark McGhee: “I was hoping we would have the bottle to get the ball down, to pass and run with the ball, and we did have good spells of that.
“That was the thing I was looking for as much as the effort, because I knew the effort would be there. The determination to do what we asked them was really encouraging.”
