Trivia

  • KO: 17:45 ; 2nd leg; Thursday
  • Europe: Conference League play-off round draw – Celtic v FK Bodo/Glimt (Norway Champions);Celtic’s first set of matches in this new tournament
  • Temperature inside the Aspmyra Stadion around -4 degrees Celsius BUT also snow blankets Scotland too! Astroturf pitch.
  • Celtic hammered and out of their third European competition this season. 1-5 agg defeat!
  • A lot of players rested from starting line up! But still many first team players tonight were poor and the white flag was raised possibly before the game even began.
  • Bodø/Glimt are the reigning champions in Norway after winning 2021 Eliteserien. They also have won the now defunct Northern Norwegian Cup nine times, Norwegian Cup twice and finished second in the Norwegian top division in 1977, 1993, 2003 and 2019.  Undefeated in their UECL group.
  • It is only 1569 miles from The North Pole so most likely furthest north Celtic have ever played a match. Bodo/Glimt is up in the Arctic area!
  • Bodo Glimt had never before met a Scottish team in European competition.
  • Celtic-supporters are seriously the nicest and most welcoming people in the World. Me and my friends got four free tickets to a concert that we really wanted to see, just for being nice people with Bodø/Glimt-effects. That’s true supporter culture. ” @andreastymi https://twitter.com/AndreasTymi/status/1495445800184434697?t=kqiIIFmb7nLB-uIEdMCLeg&s=19
  • Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo on the day before the game agreed a deal on loan to  Russian side FC Ufa. On same day: Russian President Putin orders troops to eastern Ukraine after formally recognizing breakaway regions.
  • On morning of this game, in Russia/Ukraine: Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a “special military operation”; effectively a war has broken out.
  • UEFA has stripped St. Petersburg, Russia, of the right to host the Champions League final. Scotland is to play Ukraine in World Cup qualifiers and that is to be resolved.
  • Barcelona reputedly following up on a move for ex-Celt Kieran Tierney. Real Madrid reportedly also on the lookout for him.
  • Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann wants to bring ex Celtic loanee Jeremy Toljan to the German champions. Everyone surprised as he was very unimpressive at Celtic, and reports not dissimilar at his current club (Sissalano in Italy).
  • VAR: Meeting to be held over bringing it in, issue over £100k per club cost. Some calling for Celtic & Sevco to lump the bill!
  • Ex Rangers player Maurice Ross tells Celtic ‘you’ve been top of the league for 10 minutes’ as he blasts ‘classless’ Giakoumakis for claiming Celtic are better than their rivals in “every single part of the team” (GG should have left this unsaid or kept it private).  However the irony of @MauriceARoss having the audacity to call anyone ‘classless’ when he got chased out of Notts County less than two months into the job for being racist just under a year ago will be lost on absolutely no-one bar the man himself.

Summary

Well and truly beaten by a team who had excellent organisation and who showed great ability when it mattered! Will take some side to put Bodo out of that conference league… The Celtic players have no option but to put that  tie behind them and fast!No complaints!

Very poor again but the better team deserved to win the tie. We move on, no major injuries, get home safe, regroup and prepare for sunday. We can continue to evolve what is very much a squad and team in transition with much more change and improvement to come.

DoctorRamesh of KDS:
First half was awful. Second half until the goal we looked much better, much more composed, McGregor being key to that. We missed a couple of great chances that could have brought some life to the tie but whilst their second goal was a great finish, our defending was woeful, with Bitton trundling about ball watching.
The league is everything now. We know our squad and what we must do. I hope never to see the Rogic and O’Reilly pairing again as they cancel each other out and I’d rather see McCarthy if we think we need to play Bitton. Neither are fast nor great (from what we’ve seen this season) but McCarthy seems to read the game better, is stronger and seems to be able to find a teammate with a pass when pressed. Bitton is just way to slow on the ball for Angeball to work. LB is still a glaring problem with both Scales and Taylor being most underwhelming. Very disappointed in Scales today, several times he was in a position to cross and he just dithered which is a waste as we have seen he can cross the ball.
O’Reilly and Maeda have not been failures with goals and assists but will need a bit more time to click with the team. I actually thought Maeda looked more involved today, like he was finally finding his feet in the team although he should have buried his chance. Dunno what happen to Rogic since he was away with Australia but apart from Motherwell he has been pants.

John Hartson: Celtic didn’t match Bodo over the 2 legs.. disappointing to lose the way we did… dust ourselves down and go again… get ready for the challenges ahead.

Twitter:

@agentscotland : Really disappointing way for Celtic to go out, Bodo/Glimt are a good side but to be out manoeuvred, out thought and out fought, games are coming so thick and fast and winning is the most important thing but they’ve not played well since Fir Park six games ago, Sunday is huge.

@paidthebills: All the credit goes to Bodø.Outthought, outplayed, out manoeuvred all over the park. They play at a pace we have no answers to.Our passing is woeful. They have their system down to a T.We have a long long way to go,to be anywhere near that level.

@arjoseph: The tie wasn’t dead last week – especially with no away goal rule. Celtic’s team selection was strange & they got what they were asking for tonight. Embarrassing tie overall. Context is important, though – Ange Postecoglou is building for a greater good & the signs are there.

Celtic suffer near 60-year low in Bodo/Glimt – Ange Postecoglou’s big decision, was Conference League relevant

https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/celtic/celtic-suffer-near-60-year-low-as-defeat-at-bodoglimt-ends-euro-run-3585312
In the rush of some among the Celtic support to proclaim Ange Postecoglou’s team as a dramatic upgrade on recent times, the slide represented by the humbling Conference League exit to Bodo/Glimt tells a different story.

The upshot of their miserable 2-0 loss in the Norwegian return leg of their last 16 play-off is not just that they have tumbled them out of a third straight European competition at the earliest juncture possible. The 5-1 aggregate defeat represents their heaviest losing margin in almost 60 years competing in continental competition when pitted against a side from outside of Europe’s big five leagues. Indeed, it is one of only a handful of knock-out ties where they have been beaten both home and away. All a world away from them only two seasons ago topping a European group for the first time – courtesy of Europa League exploits wherein they didn’t lose in four games against top five league teams – under the now derided Neil Lennon.

Postecoglou’s decision to start without a clutch of key performers in Bodo resulted in Callum McGregor, Liel Abada, Jota, Josip Juranovic, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Reo Hatate and Greg Taylor all being initially placed on the bench. Yet, that wasn’t the reason his team came up short in the Arctic Circle. It merely betrayed two other considerations. The first, that he knew the jig was up for his team in continental competition following the 3-1 first leg reverse in Glasgow … when he fielded all his go-to men. And, secondly, that the Conference League is largely an irrelevance for Celtic when set against the bid to win the cinch Premiership. In that respect, it made sense to give so many of those who will start for the crucial meeting with Hibs at Easter Road a midweek breather.

Deep down, and though he would never admit so publicly, the deftness and incisiveness exhibited by Bodo/Glimt in outclassing Celtic on their own patch would have had Postecoglou recognising there was no prospect of them staging a comeback on the plastic of the Aspmyra Stadion. The contest appeared an entirely synthetic one from the earliest stages, even before Ola Solbakken made it 1-0 nine minutes in. The home side looked a level above Celtic, as they did across the majority of the 180 minutes of the tie, in playing with a sharpness and intent that contrasted with the sluggish slipshod nature of their visitors. They capitalised on their command with Elias Hagen allowed to drive down the middle of the pitch, before slipping to Solbakken. He was then able to shift in from the left without being fully engaged by Liam Scales, before steering a precise low effort into the far corner.

As Celtic could not get a foothold, only two superb saves from Joe Hart prevented them appearing on course to suffer the 6-1 mauling that befell Roma at the same ground this season. They improved once McGregor and Abada were introduced at the interval for the lifeless Matt O’Riley and Liel Abada, and did threaten on occasion with Daizen Maeda blazing over when through on goal after 68 minutes. Within a minute, the scoreline was more befitting of the overall balance of play and again the swiftness and lethalness of Bodo/Glimt was to the fore in a move that produced a cut-back that Hugo Vetlesen met sweetly, sending a side-footed first time effort beyond the helpless Hart.

‘Mate, come on’ – Irritated Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou bites back at Norwegian press and explains his team selection

Irked Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou shot down a question from a member of the Norwegian press in the wake of Celtic’s 2-0 defeat by Bodo/Glimt.

Celtic’s Europa Conference League adventure came to a close after they lost 5-1 on aggregate to the champions of Norway, who were impressive throughout the two legs.

Asked in his post-match press conference whether he thought Bodo/Glimt could go on and win the competition by a local journalist, Postecoglou gave a terse response.

“Mate, come on,” the Australian said. “Ask their coach. Why do I care? Really. Do you think I really care who wins this tournament now? We’re not going to win it.

“They’re a good team, I hope they keep going well, but I couldn’t care less who wins the tournament.”

Postecoglou also explained why he left several first-team players, such as captain Callum McGregor, on the bench for the match.

“It’s why we have a squad,” Postecoglou continued. “We can’t compete in all these tournaments without it.

“We got through the first-half of the year, but we just got through it because we had an enormous amount of injuries.

“We play at midday on Sunday and you know how late we are going to get back from Norway. After playing on an artificial pitch.

“If we expected players to back up in those two games, then I’m not doing my job in looking after the players in the right way.

“The team we put out there was good enough to play better than what we did and that’s the disappointing thing.

“But, at the same time, we have got to understand that’s why we brought players in, to make sure that we have a strong squad to compete.”

Ola Solbakken gave Bodo/Glimt an early lead on the night

Celtic were outclassed by Bodo/Glimt as the slick Norwegian champions dumped the Scots out of the Europa Conference League 5-1 on aggregate.

Chasing a 3-1 first leg deficit, hopes of making the last 16 were extinguished after just nine minutes when Ola Solbakken swept home for the hosts.

And a startled Celtic were undone again as Hugo Vetlesen knocked in a second to compound a miserable night in Norway.

It could have been more with goalkeeper Joe Hart making two outstanding saves.

Reaction & how it happened

Bobo/Glimt’s late goal in the first leg had handed Celtic a mountain to climb as they travelled to the Arctic Circle.

Ange Postecoglou’s side needed to win by at least two goals against a side who were unbeaten in 13 home games, including a 6-1 rout of Serie A giants Roma.

But, Celtic were overwhelmed in the opening minutes. Amahl Pellegrino had a shot saved and a corner skim the post before it was 1-0 to the hosts.

Nir Bitton lost possession in midfield with Celtic exposed at the back, and Solbakken picked a spot beyond goalkeeper Hart from 18 yards.

Celtic looked dazed, and the wall of yellow shirts kept coming. Hart had to spread himself to deny Pellegrino as the defence was cut open again.

Runar Espejord headed wide. Hart’s brilliant one-handed save denied Pellegrino and only a Carl Starfelt deflection denied Solbakken on the follow-up as Celtic continued to toil.

The Scottish Premiership leaders looked a side devoid of any belief. With 10 minutes to go to half-time they already looked resigned to going out of the competition. The challenge simply seemed to be trying to avoid an embarrassment.

They did get a glimpse of goal before the break. Giorgios Giakoumakis headed weakly into the goalkeeper’s hands, then an already offside Starfelt knocked a free-kick over the bar.

With the heavy wind behind them, Celtic were more of an attacking force after the break, but home goalkeeper Joshua Smits was able to watch a glut of crosses go past him without having a save to make.

Eventually, the chances arrived. Daizen Maeda broke through the defence but blasted over, and Liel Abada shot straight at Smits.

But the home side always looked like they could grab a second, and they did when Vetlesen lost Bitton in the box and knocked home Morten Konradsen’s cut-back on the half volley.

Giakoumakis, fresh from a weekend hat-trick against Dundee, tried to cut the deficit but lifted a shot over the bar, and Abada put a late chance wide as the Scots were frozen out in Norway.

Bodo/Glimt’s Amahl Pellegrino
Amahl Pellegrino’s touch, pace and vision made him a nightmare to handle, and he was unlucky not to be on the scoresheet
What did we learn?

The Norwegian champions proved to be a slick, well-organised and effective counter-attacking unit in the first leg.

They were just as impressive at home as they were in Glasgow. The more Celtic pushed forward, the more the home side exploited the gaps and swarmed in attack.

Celtic stemmed the tide and threatened after the break, but more due to Bodo/Glimt taking their foot off the gas with the job done, and yet they still cut the visitors open.

For manager Postecoglou, it is a wake-up call for his side. As impressive as they have been going forward in recent games, they have shown a vulnerability at the back, conceding at least two goals in four of their last five games, with only Championship side Raith Rovers unable to breach their defence.
What did they say?

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou on BT Sport: “The levels of performance weren’t at the level we needed them to be.

“The least effective performances in Europe were in these last two games, including the 4-0 defeat to Leverkusen.

“I expect to go further in every competition we play, that’s the nature of this football club. Europe for us was beyond us in terms of levels we needed to get to. It’s my responsibility to make sure we improve and next year ensure that we perform better.

“I think the supporters understand where we’re at and what we need to do.”
