Trivia
- KO: 15:00; Saturday; League Match 31 of 38
- St Patrick’s day on Thursday past.
- Match sold out well in advance (around one month) which is great news for the game in Scotland.
- Minute applause held pre match for recently passed away former Celtic player and interim manager Frank Connor. RIP
- David Turnbull returns from injury and comes off the bench.
- Another hat trick for Giakoumakis.
- Legendary rap music star Snoop Dogg has promised he’ll party with Celtic if they become champions and pleaded: “Bhoys don’t let me down”.
- “He’s been injured mate, he wasn’t kidnapped!” Ange Postecoglou referring to Kyogo Furuhashi’s injury status
- Ronny Regan: after 36 years as a commentator to the Celtic visually impaired section, he is to do his very last game. All the best to him.
- Aussie/Sydney Trip: Sevco reportedly to scrap Celtic Australia trip as ‘fortunate opportunity’ (sic!) apparently has emerged! If you believe that then…
- Former Dundee boss James McPake prior to this match stated he believed Celtic are more difficult to play against than Sevco. He said: “That’s one thing I noticed about Celtic: they’re very aggressive at the start of both halves, and they’re ultra-aggressive once they get a goal. If I was to pick one I wouldn’t want to play against – the two of them would beat us – but Celtic have been the ones that we really struggled against.”
- Matt O’Riley called up to Denmark u21 side. Congratulations to him and he acknowledges the part his move to Celtic played in this.
- Scotland v Ukraine play-off: FIFA discuss giving Ukraine a bye to 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
- P&O Ferries has sacked 800 workers and are replacing them with agency crew (and to hire cheap Asian labour in their place). Causes mass outrage.
- Covid Scotland: New record as one in 14 people have virus
- Ex-Rangers player & EBT Tax cheat Neil McCann has lost a First Tier Tribunal against HMRC in respect of his income over an eight year stint as a pundit with Sky Sports.
- Rugby: final weekend of the six nations. Italy defeat Wales away for first time with an incredible last gasp try, their first win in many years. Scotland hammered by Ireland in a disastrous tournament for Scotland (who entered it with high hopes and belief they were amongst the favourites and really got lucky not to end lower in the table). France win Grand Slam for first time in 12 years, congrats.
Summary
Asked Ange about the “taps aff” in the North Curve today:
“You guys are crazy. 15 degrees and your shirts are off”.
“They’ve been unbelievable from pretty much day one.”
Ange Postecoglou praises Celtic support (March 2022)
Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou asked whether he will be watching Dundee against Rangers tomorrow after moving six points clear: “My Sunday’s are dictated by my wife and kids, mate. “Depending if Sing 2 is on the TV or something I’ll probably have to fight for the remote”.
Joebloggscity of thecelticwiki: Special mention for the referee Don Robertson: totally incompetent and especially in the first half. Poorest refereeing I’ve seen so far this season. Two possible penalties not given, some cautions not given and straight red to Ross County player was deemed harsh by some (including some Celtic fans).
Giakoumakis now on 12 for the season, closing in on Sutton’s first season tally of 19 – a different beast since January.
Twitter:
@agentscotland FT: Celtic 4-0 Ross CountyWhen so many Celtic players are on form at the same time the result and plenty of goals is inevitable, it was four going on 6 or 7 and that’s being generous to County, Giakoumakis with three goals and an assist so his MotM award was obvious and worthy.
Liam Kelly: Absolutely outstanding display by the Green Brigade today to mark the anniversary of Celtic Patron Michael Davitt laying the first sod of shamrock smothered turf at Paradise. A former Irish Republican Brotherhood member invited to do so by Brother Walfrid et al.

Celtic have a new darling as rare occurrence shows just where this team is right now

It isn’t often a spontaneous round of applause will lap Celtic Park. Even more unusual, is any outpouring of this variety rippling round the four stands for seconds. More unusual again is such acclaim and appreciation flowing from a missed opportunity.

That the arena was bathed in such warmth to match the sunshine told everything about the contentment of the home support for the swaggering, effervescent football with which Ange Postecoglou’s men sliced Ross County to ribbons in a 4-0 win. And these denizens could feel sufficient delight to put their hands together for an exquisite, artful passing move that ended with Matt O’Riley flashing the ball just wide late in the first period because of what had come before.
Many, understandably, felt that the Highland side – on a three-game winning run – could be a tough nut to crack for Celtic as they sought a victory to put them six points ahead of Rangers, at least until the Ibrox men face Dundee on Sunday lunchtime. Instead Postecoglou’s men sledgehammered them with three goals inside 26 minutes as they attacked with artistry and abandon.

Celtic, now with a six-month unbeaten domestic record that encompasses 31 games, could hardly be in better shape for the acid test of an Ibrox meeting with their title rivals when the cinch Premiership resumes following the international break.
Celtic’s Daizen Maeda (centre) was also on the scoresheet.
Celtic’s Daizen Maeda (centre) was also on the scoresheet.
Postecoglou appears anointed over the manner in which his players, and notably his signings, are continually delivering for him. Giorgios Giakoumakis is the new darling. And it is little wonder when the County cuffing resulted in him bagging a second hat-trick in as many home games. With a 12 goal tally for the season his strike rate is now superior to even that of 16-goal Kyogo Furuhashi. The Greek, recalled to his national team squad this week, completed his treble by confidently slotting away a 59th-minute penalty, awarded for an Alexander Iacovitti handball.
It was a full-circle moment since he stewed for so long from missing a spot-kick into the same net when Celtic spilled two points against Livingston five months earlier.
Somehow the ball now appears a magnet for the striker in the six-yard box, his lethal zone. When Jota arced the ball into that area 11 minutes in, he was there to dink a header into the corner. A bit of head tennis led to him nodding in at a second attempt for his second seven minutes later. By which time the visitors’ goal was taking an almighty pounding. What Giakoumakis has not had this season is an assist but he put that to rights when he produced a downward header from a Jota corner that Daizen Maeda was able to stretch out his leg to nudge over the line.
Two minutes later, matters became even more desperate for Malky Mackay’s men when referee Don Robertson gave a straight read to Kaiyne Ramsay for taking both ball and Tom Rogic in a crude challenge. The Australian couldn’t continue, giving way to O’Riley a minute later, but the introduction of David Turnbull for the closing 20 minutes was the change to elicit thunderous cheers. The Scotland international had not featured since damaging his hamstring in the Sports Premier Cup final in late December, but now offers even more enhancement for Postecoglou’s final third options. As if they are lacking …
Celtic reaction: Weirdly missing from top of one table; absence makes fans fonder towards Turnbull; Green Brigade navel-gazing with who they choose to honour

Goals are flowing for Celtic again, with 10 in their past three games. But one position remains elusive even with those returns.

Weirdly missing from top of one table
It seemed all about the goals as Celtic extended their league lead to six points with a 4-0 thumping of Ross County – the club’s biggest home league win since August. Giorgos Giakoumakis bagged his second hat-trick in as many appearances at the club’s home to take his tally to nine goals in only seven games, and 11 since the turn of the year. Daizen Maeda’s goal means he has six in 14 outings. Celtic are the highest scorers in the cinch Premiership, with a 69 total from their 31 games.

All of which makes one anomaly unprecedented. In the list of top league scorers, Celtic do not have a player in the leading five. Four of Giakoumakis’ goals of late have come in the Scottish Cup, giving him eight in the league. The sixth-placed player and best-placed from Celtic is winger Liel Abada on nine. Now, that situation might change in the closing two months of the season with current top of the pile, Ross County’s Regan Charles-Cook, only five ahead on the 13 mark. But never so late into a top flight campaign wherein Celtic are excelling – they are now 25 league games unbeaten in a 31-match domestic run with loss – have they been missing from the leading contenders for the golden boot.
The fact could be considered merely a quirk of fate. Kyogo Furuhashi was up there across the first half of the season with eight league goals from 14 appearances, only to be sidelined for the past three months with a hamstring issue. And Giakoumakis surely would have been but for the first half of the campaign largely proving a write-off for him through injury problems. Notably, in terms of league minutes per goal, Giakoumakis and Furuhashi are no.1 and no.2 among the 24 highest Premiership scorers, with the Greek boasting a goal every 90 minutes and his frontline team-mate netting every 118 minutes.
Absence makes fans fonder towards Turnbull
The ear-piercing roars that greeted David Turnbull’s introduction as a late substitute against County, an appearance which marked his comeback following three months out with a hamstring tear, would have greatly warmed the attacker. There were growing grumbles about Ange Postecoglou consistently selecting the 22-year-old over the first half of the season…when he didn’t have options such as January acquisitions Reo Hatate and Matt O’Riley.
Both have been excellent, but in his absence maybe the club followers have recognised that Turnbull still offers different attributes to any other central performers in the Celtic squad. A point made by Postecoglou in his pre-match for the County meeting. With nine goals and seven assists, the Scotland international’s input to goals is bettered only by Furuhashi at the club. And ranged against blanket defences, his willingness to shoot from long range – while by no means consistently earning dividends – on important occasions has been the means to puncture holes not being opened up through any other means.
Green Brigade navel-gazing on who they choose to honour
How special would it have been if the North Curve, or whatever is the favoured appellation, had unfurled a banner celebrating Frank Connor on afternoon when the life of this great servant of the club was celebrated, following his death at 86 a fortnight ago. Connor, the only man in the modern age to hold six different positions at Celtic, signed on for his beloved club on four separate occasions…two of these after he had earlier been discarded. The wonderful character, who simply ate and breathed Celtic, is the only man to take the helm for at least four games – as he did as caretaker manager in 1993 – and remain undefeated.
But, no, it was Michael Davitt who earned the banner treatment from the ultras at the weekend, presumably for the belief that he laid the first sod – imported from Donegal – at the current Celtic Park exactly 130 years earlier, on March 19, 1892…though it is contended by some historians that this took place in August, 1892. For the obsessively-Irish nationalist wing of the Celtic support, the attraction of Mayo-born Davitt, not understood to have any great love of football, is transparent. He became first patron of the early Celtic as a result of his dedication both to the nationalist cause in Ireland, and for his efforts, which extended to the Scottish Highlands, of taking on the land owners in both countries then involved in egregious exploitation of those on the lowest rung of the social ladder. There is no doubting he was a great champion for human rights and laudable causes then. Yet, what really sells Davitt to the Green Brigade acolytes is revealed by this extract from an excellent profile of him in The Celtic Star blogsite: “Michael Davitt was the founder of the Irish National Land League and… served 15 years in a Dartmoor prison for ‘Irish Republican agitation’ and ‘gun running’.” Of course he did.

Celtic’s Giorgos Giakoumakis celebrates scoring
Giorgos Giakoumakis scored a hat-trick against Dundee in February
Giorgos Giakoumakis scored his second hat-trick in five games as Celtic swept in-form Ross County aside to move six points clear of Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premiership.
The Greek striker scored an early double, then set up a Daizen Maeda tap-in to secure the three points within the opening 26 minutes.
County defender Kayne Ramsay was sent off moments later and Giakoumakis added his third from the penalty spot – and Celtic’s fourth – after a handball.
Not for the first time, Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou did not rise to questioning about his side’s relentless 31-game unbeaten domestic run piling pressure on second-top Rangers before the reigning champions’ visit to Dundee on Sunday.
“We can’t influence what others do,” he said. “We just concentrate on what we need to do.”
County slip into the bottom half after their three-game winning streak came to a shuddering end.
Reaction & as it happened
Manager Malky Mackay not surprisingly stuck with the side that beat St Mirren last weekend to move into the top six after a run of only one defeat in eight outings, but he found his former club in unforgiving form.
Jota had returned to Celtic’s starting line-up in place of the injured James Forrest and the “really bright” winger was picked out for praise by Postecoglou along with Giakoumakis and Maeda.
Immediately showing the class that made him such an influence after arriving on loan from Benfica last summer, Jota had already sent a dipping drive just over the crossbar when his inswinging cross found Giakoumakis rising above his marker and goalkeeper Ross Laidlaw to head in from close range.
Another deep Jota cross led to the second, Maeda nodding back into the six-yard box, where Giakoumakis had his first header cleared off the line by defender Jack Baldwin but stooped to make no mistake with his second.
Fine saves from Laidlaw had denied Maeda and Callum McGregor, but the goalkeeper was left wrong-footed when Jota’s corner was headed down by Giakoumakis and prodded over by the Japanese striker.
There was still plenty of time for the afternoon to get worse for County and it did just that two minutes later when on-loan Southampton defender Ramsay was shown a straight red card after diving into a challenge on Tom Rogic.
The Australian midfielder, who had come back into the home side in place of Matt O’Riley, was unable to continue and swapped places with the Englishman, as Mackay sent on fit-again defender Keith Watson for winger Joseph Hungbo with damage limitation the watchword.
Another couple of Laidlaw saves were required as Celtic looked to make their man advantage tell after the break.
Celtic eventually eased off after a clinical spot-kick completed Giakoumakis’ hat-trick – his 12th goal of the season – and had the luxury of handing a return as a substitute to David Turnbull, the Scotland midfielder having been on the sidelines since December through injury.
Man of the match – Giorgos Giakoumakis
What did we learn?
They were second best to Bodo Glimt in the Europa Conference League, but there are no signs of Celtic letting up their post-winter break charge towards what seemed an unlikely title early in Postecoglou’s reign.
With Turnbull back from injury and Japan striker Kyogo Furuhashi nearer to his, the strength in depth in the Australian’s squad is increasing just at the right end of the season, and it looks like the two remaining Old Firm derbies will be decisive for the destination of the title.
Mackay stressed before kick-off that avoiding relegation was always County’s priority after having to rebuild his squad in the summer, but despite a heavy victory, they remain within touching distance of a top-six bonus.
With two games left before the split, they remain in the mix, only a point behind fifth-top Hibernian and with six teams separated by two, and can put this down to a bad day at the office.
What they said
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “We had a couple of really tough away games where we’ve done really well but the playing surfaces haven’t allowed us to play our football.
“Today allowed us to be really good and bright and we were well in control of the game.”
Ross County manager Malky Mackay: “We had to show resilience and make sure it did not reach a score that can happen here when you go down to 10 men. I was very proud of them.
“We’re still in a position with two games to go that we’re in with a lot of other teams with a chance to get into the top six.”
