Summary

‘Playing for a club like Celtic is pretty cool’
Matt O’Riley

“I made the mistake of declaring my love of Scotch whisky and now, seriously, I get about a case a day delivered to my place. I don’t think I’ll ever drink it.”
Ange Postecoglou

‘I couldn’t contain my emotions’
Celtic’s Tom Rogic, https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/av/football/61451823

“And for you, the best fans on the planet, unbelievable. You’ve embraced me, embraced my family, embraced this jumper… I want everyone to enjoy today, enjoy the summer and we’ll come back bigger and better, because we never stop!”
Ange Postecoglou

Inside The SPFL @AgentScotland · 7h Been to so many of these trophy days over the years, in terms of atmosphere this is one of the best, 1998 probably won’t be rivalled but this one is as close as it gets, 04 was fraught with emotion but that was completely down to nearing the end of Larsson’s long goodbye.

fatboab of KDS:

Fantastic end to a fairytale season. This team is relentless, on a day when we’d happily have accepted a holiday style performance, these guys went for the jugular, scored six, could have scored ten.
Work to do during the summer, but if Ange builds on this, and we can keep our main men fit, it will be something to behold.
Kyogo and Giakoumakis will rip this league apart next season.

Well done and thank you Ange, you’ve delivered more than we believed possible.

El Salto of KDS:

It was good to see Celtic going for it on the last day of the season
Title in the bag, you would have been forgiven for thinking that they might not be on it 100%
But not this team, they turned up with a mission, to win well and entertain, and they didn’t let us down
When Ange says we are going to get bigger and better, you actually believe him
A fantastic day Celtic, and an emotional one with the departure of Rogic and Bitton
The fans were magnificent from first whistle to last
The tears were flowing today, I’m just an old sap.

Celtic’s title party heightens sensations with outrageous evisceration of Motherwell in front of frenzied fans
Celtic’s served up a trophy presentation day that was only missing a kitchen sink.

https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/celtic/celtics-title-party-heightens-sensations-with-outrageous-evisceration-of-motherwell-in-front-of-frenzied-fans-3694307

It is easy to become jaundiced about such league winning love-ins but there was genuine, and affecting, heightened sensations thanks to the myriad elements at play. And here was a day so drenched with elation and emotion, the elan with which they eviscerated Motherwell by a 6-0 scoreline almost seemed a sideline. Yet relentless, attacking football that produced it is precisely what accounts for why Ange Postecoglou practically acquired the status of a religious deity to the club’s faithful.

Certainly, there was something messianic in the manner he led Celtic out of the wilderness to a title success widely considered to require a miracle. Exhibiting the class, grace and wit with which he has conducted himself and that his team possess, he predictably stole the show with his address. No mean feat when the ensemble cast was sizeable over the gleefest of welcoming back to the championship silverware that has been theirs for 10 of the past 11, and offering up the fondest of farewells to departing pair Tom Rogic and Nir Bitton.

“Champions” was a word to which he kept returning as at times he struggled to be heard above the booming chanting of his name around the stadium. “Best on the planet” was fed like candy to his adulatory masses. Before, with voice cracking, he expressed his gratitude with the sort of quip that he has sweetened so many pronouncements across his staggering debut campaign in Scotland: “You’ve embraced me, embraced my family and embraced my jumper”. Only to then end with a pledge that his team would come back “bigger and better because we never stop”.

The outpourings of affection for the departing Rogic and Bitton, with a combined 18 years experience and 34 trophies between them, seemed to leave both choking back the tears. The club gave the club honour of carrying the cinch Premiership silverware out to its plinth for the ceremonial handover. After they had been honoured profoundly by those who follow it. Rogic seemed to dissolve both with the reception accorded him by what seemed the entire stadium on the minute of his number, 18, and when he substituted on the hour and embraced by all his team-mates before a long and smothering bear-hug from Postecoglou. Bitton, perhaps through fitness issues, was only introduced five minutes from time to be showered with affection that rained down for him in the sixth minute.

Motherwell were drenched by a goals deluge that began with Kyogo Furuhashi opening the scoring in 18 minutes when he seized on a poor clearance from a corner clubbed in a low effort. His second, and Celtic’s third, two minutes from the interval was exquisite, the striker tickling a deft one-touch finish beyond Liam Kelly after he allowed a chip from Anthony Ralston to drop over his shoulder. Three minutes earlier, David Turnbull produced a Rogic-esque strike, chopping Ricki Lamie before, with leg outstretched, he jabbed in at the near post.

Jota swept in the fourth on the hour after Daizen Maeda had inadvertently knocked the ball into his path then Giorgos Giakoumakis, off the bench, took over. An outrageous overhead kick produced his team’s fifth in 68 minutes, before the Greek forward earned himself the honour of being joint to league scorer with his 13th of the top flight and 17th of an injury-blighted first season in Scotland. It was just so emblematic for one of the raft of successful Postecoglou signings to then scramble the ball over the line in the final seconds of Celtic’s final game. They never stop, right enough.

Celtic fans see different side of Tom Rogic – ‘wasn’t a decision I took lightly’
Such was affection with which the Celtic support showered Tom Rogic on his final appearance for the club, the ordinarily phlegmatic Australian admitted afterwards he could not help himself welling up.

https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/celtic/celtic-fans-see-different-side-of-tom-rogic-wasnt-a-decision-i-took-lightly-3694343

The playmaker is unquestionably one of the most naturally talented performers to grace the club in the past two decades. Since he pitched up from Central Coast Mariners in January 2013, his balletic ball control has led to him serving up some iconic moments as he had claimed 16 honours. Long-term injuries brought fallow periods but he is beloved by the club’s faithful for his winner that sealed the invincible treble success of 2016-17, a blunderbuss effort at Kilmarnock that sent the club on their way to title glory in 2015, and some glorious finishes against Rangers. As with fellow departee Nir Bitton, he is a quadruple treble winner and contributed to Celtic’s nine-in-a-row era.

Yet, the home faithful witnessed a side to the player they had not seen when he was brought off an hour into the 6-0 slaying of Motherwell. The ovation that ensued left him unable to prevent the tears flowing. So overcome, he was left burying his face into his strip as he was movingly embraced by all his team-mates and his manager.

“I couldn’t contain my emotion, it was hard,” Rogic said. “It’s a special club, it’s been an enormous part of my life. I came here when I was 20, now 29 I’ve experienced so many memories in that time. Hopefully this is the start under the new manager. It wasn’t a decision I took lightly, but I feel the timing is right. [This title win] is right up there. Off the back of last season, it’s enormous. It’s a special season to go out on.”

In terms of game-time, under his fellow Australian and former Socceroos manager Ange Postecoglou, this proved the most productive season of his Celtic career, no less. That isn’t true of Bitton, signed six months after his fellow heading-into-the-sunset comrade. But the Israeli proved an able support player for the midfield screening role undertaken by his captain Callum McGregor. Bitton has experienced the vagaries across his near-decade in Glasgow – as well as 18 trophies, he collected six red cards – but that was no impediment to the midfielder being given a deafening ovation when introduced five minutes from time. It made for a last, lasting memory to add the treasure trove he takes back to his homeland with him. “It’s amazing,” he said. “When I signed for this club I obviously knew the expectations were high. It’s about winning trophies, it’s about taking this club to the Champions League. I’m just happy to finish with this one.

“I’ve won a lot of trophies here, I’ve had a lot of ups and downs, injuries. But this club is just about winning and after last season, the players who have been here knew how much it meant for the fans and everyone involved to bring this title home. I’m just happy we did for them.

“There are so many memories. My debut, I will never forget. The winning of the treble [in 2017], an amazing moment. And especially this one, to finish this journey on a high, the way I wanted to finish it. I’m speechless.”

Ange Postecoglou allows himself to look into Celtic future – ‘it’s going to be special’
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou is daring to look forward to the “bloody brilliant” that will be the reward for success he has enjoyed in his first season in Scotland.

https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/celtic/ange-postecoglou-allows-himself-to-look-into-celtic-future-its-going-to-be-special-3694353
The 56-year-old almost allowed himself to become giddy over what is to come after a cinch Premiership title triumph so regally toasted as they were handed the cinch Premiership silverware following their final day 6-0 mauling of Motherwell.

Indeed, there was more than a twinkle in his eyes as he sought to respond soberly to whether he had thought about the fabled Champions League group-stage nights that his team top flight’s exploits will return to Celtic Park in September following a five-year absence. Before he could not help but betray his true feelings. “Not yet,” he said initially, before going on to expand: ”When the draw comes out it will become real, but it is going to be special. Everyone talks to me about Champions League nights here at Celtic Park and there is nothing like it. It will be bloody brilliant.”

The brilliance of his comprehensively recast team is inarguable with their closing fixture marking their 32nd league encounter unbeaten, the last of their three losses coming last September as they were struggling to export their incisive and effervescent brand of front-foot football. It could be argued that Postecoglou has left himself a hostage to fortune by telling a rapturous home faithful in a post-match address that his Celtic team would be “bigger and better” next season. A haul of 93 points and 92 goals sets a mighty high bar for improvement but the 56-year-old pointed to one aspect of his rebuild that gives him confidence in raising standards against next season.

“You look at 80 per cent of this squad and I’d suggest they didn’t do a pre-season,” the Celtic manager said. “They either came in after pre-season, or in the winter, or were injured. We have a lot of players like Kyogo and David Turnbull who missed big chunks of the season because we overburdened them at the start of the season. We will get natural improvement because we are at a much better starting point. The challenge then is to keep pushing the players to be better and add to the squad to make us stronger. Where we start on the first day of pre-season will be way ahead of where we were.

“There’s no secret. I tell the players that the magic out there comes from sheer hard work every day. Every day coming into training trying to be better, pushing one another and respecting everyone who you work alongside. Just sheer hard work, sweat and tears. Pushing yourself every day. It’s easy to say but doing it is the only way you can create something special.
“This group have done that — they have been committed to a cause. We’ve wanted to play a certain way and we’ve stuck to that. It has been our roadmap to success and we weren’t going to veer off it. There were some tough times, especially in Europe. We got slapped a couple of times but we didn’t change our approach. We bear the fruit now. In a game where we could have just tried to coast through it, we put six past another team and play the kind of football this club and the supporters want to see.”

BBC
Celtic celebrated receiving the Scottish Premiership trophy by ending their season with a scintillating six-goal victory against Motherwell.

After 20 minutes of probing the away defence, Kyogo Furuhashi fired in the opener before guiding in a fine finish on the volley either side of David Turnbull’s drilled effort.

Jota slotted in a fourth, with Giorgos Giakoumakis’ brace from the bench sealing an emphatic final-day win, ensuring Celtic end the league campaign with a 32-game unbeaten streak.

Ange Postecoglou’s men last tasted Premiership defeat at Livingston in September.

“We wanted to finish off in the best way,” the Celtic manager told BBC Scotland. “I couldn’t have scripted it better. The back half of this season has been unbelievable with the relentlessness of the boys.

“We get a lot of rewards for what we do, there are a lot of pressures, but this is the special bit. The nature of this football club, I want to come back better and be successful again. It never stops, but I love it.”

The loss drops Motherwell, who secured European football with victory over Hearts on Wednesday, to fifth after Dundee United came from behind to win at Ross County.

That means Graham Alexander’s side will enter the Europa Conference League at the second round of qualifying, while Celtic will start their European campaign next term in the Champions League group stage.

Reaction & as it happened

Even with the league done and dusted, Postecoglou called for his players to put on a show worthy of their champion status, and his side looked to crank up the party atmosphere early against a packed Motherwell defence.

For the first 20 minutes, the visiting backline dug deep and dealt with everything thrown their way as the hosts probed relentlessly.

But after Victor Nirennold – making his first start for the away side – made a mess of clearing a corner, the ball was picked up by Kyogo, who rifled low past Liam Kelly at his near post to break the deadlock.

Report

Tom Rogic, making his final Celtic appearance, was treated to a standing ovation on the 18th minute by the home crowd, and the Australian almost had them on their feet again moments later when he struck the right-hand post.

It was instead fellow midfielder Turnbull who doubled the advantage when he sold his marker a dummy before charging into the box to drill into the bottom-left corner against his former club.

And four minutes later it was three when Anthony Ralston’s inch-perfect ball over Jake Carroll was met by Kyogo, who guided in a delightful finish across Kelly on the volley.

Motherwell were camped in their half for the most part but did come close in the first half through Bevis Mugabi, Callum Slattery and Dean Cornelius.

Aside from that, it was their defence who were doing all the work as Jota buried a fourth after Daizen Maeda’s heavy touch found the winger, who appeared to be half a yard offside.

There was a break in Celtic’s unforgiving attacking play when Rogic’s substitution on the hour left the Australian overwhelmed with emotion as he left the pitch.

Substitute Nir Bitton, also playing his last game for the club, was just as inconsolable when entering the field for the last time.

When play resumed, Postecoglou’s free-flowing side looked to add to their tally, with Giakoumakis adding the fifth and sixth.

The Greek striker, whose two goals look set to see him finish as the league’s joint-top scorer, was allowed to finish acrobatically all too easily, before bundling in to complete a double in injury time, sealing a dazzling season-ending victory.
Man of the match – Kyogo Furuhashi
Kyogo Furuhashi
The Japan forward’s movement was sensational throughout and took both goals superbly
What did we learn?

What now for Celtic, then? Wheels seem to be in motion in terms of the club’s summer business, as long-serving Rogic and Bitton make way after decorated spells.

With the lucrative finances the Champions League will bring, securing the permanent services of Benfica loanee Jota and Tottenham Hotspur’s Cameron Carter-Vickers must become a priority.

Throughout Postecoglou’s career, his second seasons have brought his greatest successes. With what the Australian has achieved after a huge rebuild, and without his own staff, it will be intriguing to see how much Celtic can progress next term.

So with just three wins in 2022, Motherwell end the season in fifth and have European football to look forward to.

It has been a strange old season, but will anyone in their dressing room, or in the stands at Fir Park, care how they achieved it with a trip abroad to look forward to? Probably not.

But without trying to tinge a successful season with pessimism, Alexander must ensure their 2022 form doesn’t creep into next campaign.
What did they say?

Celtic midfielder Tom Rogic: “I couldn’t contain my emotion, it was hard. It’s a special club, it’s been an enormous part of my life.

“I came here when I was 20, now 29 I’ve experienced so many memories in that time. [This title win] is right up there. Off the back of last season, it’s enormous. It’s a special season to go out on.”

Motherwell manager Graham Alexander: “I thought we made a good start, but conceding the [first] goal from a set piece is really disappointing.

“Celtic showed why they’re champions, they’re a brilliant team and their manager has done a fantastic job. It wasn’t about today, though, what we’ve achieved this season is something to be proud of.”
