Celtic lose lead three times!
Some tough challenges and not as friendly a match as should have been but still much bad blood between the clubs going back to the 1980s. Some weaknesses (e.g. Defense) shown up but better now than later.
(MLE of KDS):
Been a long summer for a few folk on here by the looks of things… Good to get a preseason game that had the feel of an actual competitive fixture. Rapid are still carrot. We’re getting fitter and quite a few of the players look pretty sharp already.
Kyogo is clearly still levels above and McGregor is vital to how we play football. Turnbull, Jota, Taylor, Hatate and O’Riley all look pretty on it already. Lawal is worth investing in I think considering that game is the highest level he’s ever played at to date.
Julien is not a realistic option given today’s showing; his positional errors were worse than Lawal’s, his short/medium range passing was fine but the decision making behind the passes was terrible and his recovery pace seems to have disappeared. McCarthy is not suitable to play 6 for us and Urhoghide is never going to be a good enough footballer to play as a RB in an Ange team.
Enjoyable match and it highlights, yet again, that we need a new CH and ‘number 6’.
(ifu6702 of KDS):
Good going forward, pish in defence…. its the Europa League all over again!
I was really looking forward to seeing Urhoghide today…. was really hoping he’d improved since being in Belgium (hell, if they can do it to Jack Hendry and big Bayo they can do it for anyone). Sadly it wasn’t to be….. he really reminds me of big Bobo…. definitely not a right back and not sure I’d trust him at centre half. I could see their 2nd goal coming as soon as the got the ball on the right. Screaming at the laptop to turn round and track the runner at the back post. To be fair to him he did turn round, then he stood still while the Rapid player floated past him.

RAPID VIENNA… 3
(Zimmerman 29, Kriwak 62, Aiwu 90)
CELTIC… 3
(O’Riley 9, Turnbull 55, Kyogo 64)
Celtic and Rapid Vienna fought out an entertaining 3-3 draw with Rapid Vienna in the Austrian capital today (Saturday) as Ange Postecoglou’s side continued their preparations for the season ahead.
The Hoops led on three occasions, but each time the home side managed to fashion an equaliser, the last of those coming with the final touch of the ball in the 90th minute to deliver a repeat of the scoreline when the sides last met in European competition in 2009.
Celtic, wearing their new black and green pinstriped away kit, started the game well, with Reo Hatate looking impressive in possession.
And it only took the Hoops nine minutes to open the scoring. A ball played over to the left-hand side was kept in by Jota, and he laid it back to Matt O’Riley.
The Danish Under-21 internationalist took a touch and then from just inside the box curled a superb shot into the corner of the net.
It was a superb goal and no more than Ange Postecoglou’s side deserved from their early endeavours.
However, Rapid Vienna started to work their way back into the game, and their captain, Guido Burgstaller, had a shot from the edge of the area that was saved by Joe Hart.
And minutes later, the Celtic goalkeeper produced a world-class save to deny Nicolas-Gerrit Kuhn after he had got on the end of a cross inside the six-yard box.
It looked to be a certain equaliser, but Hart got down quickly to push the ball away with his right hand.
However, the home side managed to get back on level terms just before the half-hour mark.
A pass across the box from Cameron Carter-Vickers went beyond Joe Hart, and Ante Bakic slid in to challenge the Hoops keeper, knocking the ball back into the path of Bernhard Zimmerman who, from three yards out, tapped the ball into an empty net.
The game, though a friendly match, was very competitive, and Aleksa Pejic marked his 23rd birthday by picking up a yellow card for a challenge on Daizen Maeda.
Half-time saw a raft of changes for Ange Postecoglou’s side, with only Osaze Urhoghide staying on the pitch for the second-half.
And on 55 minutes, one of the substitutes, David Turnbull restored Celtic’s lead. Chris Jullien played a ball over the top of the Rapid Vienna defence for Kyogo to run on to in the inside right channel.
The Japanese forward looked up and played a first-time cross into the box for Turnbull to finish from six yards out.
However, just seven minutes later the Austrians were level. Scott Bain did well to stop the initial header at the back post, but Bene Kriwak pounced on the rebound to head home.
The Rapid fans were still celebrating that goal when Celtic restored their lead. David Turnbull was the architect of the goal, dispossessing the Rapid defender on the left touchline and sliding a pass into the box for Kyogo.
The Japanese internationalist took a touch and then slotted the ball coolly home with his right foot.
The home side, who had changed their 10 outfield players on the hour mark, pressed forward in search on an equaliser, and Bain had to produce a superb save to tip a Moritz Oswald shot over the bar, while Marco Grull squandered a good chance after a defensive mix-up between Jullien and Bosun Lawal.
But just when it looked as though Celtic would hold on for the win, defender Emanuel Aiwo headed home a last-gasp equaliser from a corner.
Next up for Celtic is a game in the Czech Republic on Wednesday night against Banik Ostrava.

In their second pre-season outing in Austria, the Scottish champions led three times at the Allianz Stadion in Vienna before being pegged back.
Midfielder Matt O’Riley opened the scoring in the ninth minute with a strike from the edge of the box but Bernhard Zimmermann capitalised on some Celtic slackness to tap in the equaliser.

Postecoglou made 10 changes at the break and midfielder David Turnbull scored from a Kyogo Furuhashi cross in the 56th minute to restore Celtic’s lead but Rene Kriwak soon had the scores level again.
Turnbull set up Furuhashi to slot in a third in the 56th minute but just as it looked as if Celtic would emerge with the win, Emanuel Aiwu headed in from a corner with the last touch of the game.
Hoops boss Postecoglou, however, was happy with the work out and told CelticTV: “It was a good game. I thought it didn’t feel like a friendly game, both teams were sort of going at it.
“It was exactly what you need because sometimes friendly games can be a bit passive but I thought both halves, both teams were going at it and it was a good contest.
“It felt like a real game and whenever you play away from home, particularly in Europe, it is always a bit of a challenge so it was a great exercise for us.
“Overall the key things for me was it was a good contest.
“There was some positive moments and some areas to improve.
“Again you only find that out if it is a good game and for us, the main thing is we have stuff we can take out of that game and work on and give feedback back to the boys, both positive and stuff we need to reinforce to improve.
“Sometimes these friendly games can be a bit meaningless, today was a good one.”
