Summary
Ange Postecoglou: “I don’t think we were frustrated at all. We were totally in control. We minimised their threat – they scored from a corner, they’re a big strong team so that’s always a possibility. But we were relentless in our approach, it was just a matter of time.”[BBC]
Random: A hat-trick of assists for Jota! Incredible! He’s got four assists already. Will he already be Player of the Year! Abada scored a cracking curling ball from long-shot and Mortiz Jenz was beaming, scoring a fine header on his debut which won Celtic the game after a nervy period when Ross County had equalised. Some say he was poor at the goal conceded, but he made up for it.
“Everything came up roses for Moritz Jenz, with the centre-back snaring a crucial 84th-minute goal on his Celtic debut. But it was the assurance he displayed across the opening period that suggested his on-loan spell in Scotland could blossom. The 23-year-old German used the ball productively and didn’t blanche at the pace and physicality he later admitted made for a style he was hardly versed in.”
Andrew Smith on his debut performance (The Scotsman, 7 Aug 2022) link
AgentScotland: Four direct goal involvements for Jota in the opening two games of the season, all four coming after Maeda was taken off and he was moved back over to his favoured left wing position. Something for Ange to ponder…
Harry Brady: Tens of thousands of Celtic fans across the UK will be watching in some illicit way – money flowing out of the game (and in many cases going to organised crime). The blackout rule is a farce.
Otis: I’m in the Middle East and watching legally via my Celtic TV subscription, but for about five minutes before the stream stopped my TicTV user name popped up on screen. Then the stream stopped, so I reckon the vendor was also watching on IPTV or wherever and could identify who was sharing their TicTV subscription illegally.
It was only off for about 5 minutes during which the Ross County Hackers scored their goal.
jbj712 of KDS:
Keep saying it but this was only our second competitive game because we’ve had no qualifiers.
The team just needs more games to get the sharpness up to speed. Winning is all that matters just now until we get fully match fir then we will really do damage to teams in Scotland. Remember last season we lost three of our first six games in the league if get maximum points from the first six this season we will be well on course.
Watched the three goals above and in those little clips it looked as though there were some hefty challenges going in so to win 3-1 is excellent in my book.

‘Genuine wizard’ – Jota steals show despite it belonging to another Celtic player in Dingwall
The board denoting added time had been held up before Celtic made certain of chalking up all three points at Dingwall.

It was only then that Liel Abada made the final scoreline 3-1. He did so courtesy of a sublime curling finish that followed him boring in on goal and exchanging passes with Jota. And it just had to be Jota. Fresh from his glorious strike in the Scottish champions’ opening weekend win over Aberdeen, his imprint was stamped all over what allowed Celtic to overcome a typically stubborn Highland host.
Much will be made of Mortiz Jenz, Celtic’s debutant centre-back, claiming the crucial goal to make it 2-1 six minutes from time – sailing through the air for a crashing header as if jet-propelled. But the German was able to cap a positive first showing because he could capitalise on Jota sweeping over a precision, hanging cross.

And, after Celtic struggled to turn their territorial domination into much in the way of clear openings across strangely disengaging first 45 minutes, it was Jota who turned the contest within three minutes of the restart. The 23-year-old Portuguese livewire’s dart into the box was truly box office. Genuinely wizard wing-play. The balance he displayed after he was played down the inside left channel by Callum McGregor was like that of a tightrope walker in a force ten gale as he rode a robust challenge. For his next trick, he then nutmegged a second marker before hitting the byline and cutting back for Kyogo Furuhashi to drill in from ten yards.
Moritz Jenz heads Celtic back into the lead on his debut against Ross County.
Moritz Jenz heads Celtic back into the lead on his debut against Ross County.
It seemed then that Celtic would stretch away from an opponent who were an immovable object but a non-existent presence in their visitors’ final third.
Until, that is, 10 minutes later, the sometime-flaw of Ange Postecoglou’s side reared up when hesitation seemed to reign supreme in the Celtic box as a corner from substitute Owura Edwards was swung over. County centre-back Alex Iacovitti rose above this in more ways than one, to send a downward header into the corner of a boxed-in Joe Hart’s net, despite the keeper getting a hand to it. Postecoglou delighted in his players’ response to this setback and even if Jenz did not strike until the 84th minute, there was always the sense that Celtic had the personnel to plunder the winner.
And that fact has everything to do with having such as wingers Jota and Abada, who can be relied upon for returns. Two games in and two players who half actions in more than 40 goals last season have now imputed to five goals, with the Israeli having to settle for two bench outings in the opening weeks of this cinch Premiership campaign. Their contributions are a cornerstone in Celtic now having racked up a 34-game unbeaten league sequence. That run was never threatened at Dingwall as it was a year ago. Postecoglou’s men may still have to hit their straps fully, but they are still setting a pace that will make them difficult to suppress in the long-term.

Moritz Jenz celebrates his winning goal on his debut
Moritz Jenz rescued Celtic with a late goal on his debut as the Scottish champions delivered an “outstanding” response to being pegged back by impressive Ross County.
Kyogo Furuhashi rewarded the visitors’ heavy pressure when he converted Jota’s cutback shortly after the interval.
But Alex Iacovitti thundered in a header to equalise and Joe Hart superbly denied County’s Owura Edwards.
Jenz glanced home on 84 minutes and Liel Abada’s strike made the win safe.
Reaction & as it happened
“His overall performance was really good, he’s fitting in well and training really well,” manager Ange Postecoglou said of defender Jenz, who has signed on loan from Lorient for the season.
“Our response was outstanding. We stuck to our task, played our football, scored another good goal and even then there was no thought of stopping there, we got our third and I’m really pleased with every aspect of our game.”
For all their 83% possession in the first half, Celtic failed to find a breakthrough as County provided stout resistance.
Jota’s attempt was diverted narrowly wide by Jack Baldwin and Daizen Maeda failed to keep a header low enough to trouble Ross Laidlaw.
Kyogo and Jota combined well on the edge of the box to set up the former for a shot that was saved well by the County goalkeeper.
As the half drew to a close, Celtic’s frustration grew as Matt O’Riley had a chance blocked by an exceptional sliding challenge from Baldwin and Maeda forced Laidlaw into a reflex save.
The game burst to life within minutes of the restart as Callum McGregor played a weighted pass to Jota, who took an intelligent touch past a defender before picking out Kyogo in front of goal for a simple finish.
The goal seemed to intensify County’s endeavour, as they enjoyed decent attacking possession before Iacovitti bulleted home an Edwards corner just short of the hour.
Celtic toiled in search of a second goal until centre-back Jenz glanced a header home from a terrific Jota cross to send the travelling support wild.
Intricate play on the edge of the area allowed Abada to finish off an impressive attacking move with a curling effort in injury time to guarantee all three points.
Man of the match – Jota
As much as Ross County frustrated the away side, the Portuguese winger recorded three assists as he was instrumental throughout for his side
As much as Ross County frustrated the away side, the Portuguese winger recorded three assists and was instrumental in victory
No cause for County concern
Ross County have zero points from a possible six, but they still have more than enough potential to be a surprise package this season.
An impressive attacking display on the opening weekend and a solid defensive performance this afternoon will give Malky Mackay more than enough encouragement as the season gets going.
For Celtic, what a coup Jota’s signing is. The winger, who shone on loan last season before returning on a permanent deal this summer, notched three assists in another inspirational display.
A potential downside for Postecoglou will be how frustrated his side were in the opening 45 minutes. 83% possession, 339 passes, 112 in the final third, yet only three shots on target.
The strength in depth of his bench, though, proved crucial with Abada making an impact after his half-time introduction.
What they said
Ross County manager Malky Mackay: “I was really pleased with the game-plan and that the players stuck to it. I don’t think Celtic broke us down too many times.
“There’s a lot to be looking positively at for us in the coming weeks.”
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “I’m really happy with the result and the performance. It’s a difficult place to come but the players were outstanding at controlling the game and minimising their threats.”
